Cam Newton's sexism controversy is the perfect parable for our time | Sport | The Guardian
How is this story – a workplace matter that really should’ve been resolved privately – even a thing, you ask? Because conflict, in black and white, still makes the most compelling spectacle. Sports have promoted them so well over the years that, well, it was just a matter of time before the less entertaining areas of life got in the game. And so people like CNBC’s Jim Cramer further divided stocks and bonds into winners and losers. Politics are less about issues than optics, as much for the newsmakers as the networks vying to see how many pundits they can cram onto their pre- and post-game show desks. Outrage culture is all the rage, and so the news never rests. No story, however false the premise or equivalency, is too small. This story, suddenly the week’s biggest NFL headline, is proof.

Brexit is a misnomer. it is not about British, Brexit is about the English! And Scotland failed to amend the outcome. What matters is age in turnout. The problem of granny voting out. GENERATIONAL CONFLICT in 21st century. And general inequality. Sovereignty was smth for alt-right people (authoritarian liking correlation). [...] and most importantly, IT IS NOT THE ECONOMY ANY MORE, STUPID (identity over pay day). At least for half of it. See also Donald Trump. LIES IN POLITICS HAVE NEVER BEEN MORE POWERFULL THAN 2016 - Brexit and Trump. DailyMail about EEA's. Immigrants take no jobs from "English." Immigration has contributed to growth (GDP). + WILL BE LONGEST DIVORCE. = HIT TO ECON WILL BE AS HARSH AS PREDICTED! HARD BREXIT MIGHT EVEN BE UNDERESTIMATED. [...] Populism (multiculturalism, social liberalism, immigration, environmentalism, feminism, globalisation, capitalism/corporatism) vs Cosmopolitism & Econ Left vs Econ Right [...] Brexit campaign was succesulf as in that leave voters dont think didnt think economically, it would make much of a difference. The more you were for Brexit, the less economics mattered. THIS DIVORCE WIL COST WAY MORE THAN ANYONE COULD HAVE THOUGHT ... and longer. Not 2 years. The Guardian view on the UK labour market: farewell, Lithuanian car valets | Editorial | Opinion | The Guardian
Of course, pay was not the only reason that migrant workers came to be so resented. Queues for doctors’ appointments and overcrowded classrooms were easier to see than differences in pay, and they played a bigger part in fuelling resentment. Yet in the same way that migration concealed structural change in wages, its impact on public services served as a distraction from the real cost of the austerity measures brought in by the coalition government in 2010.

The Guardian view on fair play in politics: a Conservative coup | Editorial | Opinion | The Guardian
From trade union reform to parliamentary process, the Tories show a pattern of contempt for the protocols of democracy [...] Thanks to a crafty, albeit constitutionally permitted, parliamentary manoeuvre, a cut that will affect hundreds of thousands of disadvantaged young people went through without proper debate or vote on the floor of the Commons. David Cameron commands a slender majority, but it is enough to pass most of his legislative programme in a more transparent fashion. Only the most controversial elements risk obstruction, either through rebellion on the Tory benches in the lower house or rejection in the upper one. [...] That episode, like the vote on student grants, is consistent with a pattern displayed by this government of impatience with democratic norms, verging on contempt. One habit is bundling measures of primary importance up in secondary legislation. [...] lay the foundations for a long-term Conservative monopoly on government.

Can we really trust judges to protect reporters' confidential sources? | Media | The Guardian
Journalists won’t even be safe to talk email whistleblowers from a coffee shop [...] In stressing that the powers would not be used for mass surveillance, May said the onus would be on the home office to show necessity and proportionality. They would operate a “double-lock” authorisation process on intercept and bulk interception warrants in order to prevent intrusive snooping. [ old boys club with career interests? titles, pensions? ] But will this judicial oversight provide enough protection? A knighthood for Lynton Crosby: government under fire for political honours | UK news | The Guardian
The government has been accused of turning the honours system into an “old boy’s club” after Lynton Crosby, the political strategist who ran the Conservatives’ 2015 election campaign, was awarded a knighthood. [...] “The main thing he is known for is introducing the concept of aggressive negative campaigning, or as Boris Johnson described it: ‘the dead cat strategy’ >> !!! >> [which involves distracting the public from a politically difficult issue by creating shocking news]. << !!! << Hardly worthy of honouring in this way if at all,” said McDonnell. He said Crosby’s knighthood would make the public think the titles perpetuate “an old boy’s club”. Donald Trump and Isis both benefit from a powerful fuel: our fear | Arie W Kruglanski | Opinion | The Guardian
The Republican presidential frontrunner and Islamic State both know how to exploit the fear and uncertainty so prevalent today and skillfully cultivate it [...] All these factors jolt people out of their comfort zones and foster existential anxieties that spawn yearnings for order and predictability. Three-quarters of police forces letting down vulnerable victims - watchdog | UK news | The Guardian
No single definition of vulnerability was identified, which HMIC said contributed to inconsistencies in data, but victims included children, disabled people and those subjected to repeat offences or abuse. HMIC said it had been tough in its gradings because “small failures may have tragic consequences”. Of the 43 police forces in England and Wales, HMIC judged 12 to be good and none outstanding in protecting and supporting vulnerable people. The inspection looked at several issues, including how a force identified people most at risk and how it protected specific vulnerable groups such as missing and absent children and victims of domestic abuse. It also looked at how forces tackle child sexual exploitation. //&! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rotherham_child_sexual_exploitation_scandal

Conspiracy-theorist nutbags run Congress, and they’re making Benghazi a verb: Next up, climate scientists - Salon.com
But in this political environment, being cautious about just handing a bunch of documents over to Republican is a smart move. After watching the Planned Parenthood and Benghazi hearings, a couple of things are clear: One, the Republicans will extract any stray word or number they can and take it out of context in an effort to advance their political agenda, with concerns about decency and honesty not restraining them in the slightest. Two, if they can’t find something like that, they’ll probably just lie about it. [...] The episode was a stellar demonstration of how the utter lack of morals and decency among House Republicans will lead them to distort and lie about numbers, even in the most obnoxious and obvious ways. [...] Imagine what kind of lies and distortions Republicans could gin up with the complex equations and variables that go into climate science. // confusing people. put doubt into peoples mind.

Former devolution body head Sir Kenneth Calman backs 'Union Charter' - BBC News
I don't think [the case for the Union] has been well enough articulated - it is still a case of 'them at Westminster' Sir Kenneth Calman, former head of the Scottish Commission on Devolution [...] Crossbench peer, Lord Judge, asked if there was merit in creating a Charter of the Union. Sir Kenneth replied: "The answer is yes. I think it would make the discussion easier about who does what, and how we benefit, how you benefit and how we all benefit. I think that would be very helpful. "Without that communication, the average citizen is left wondering who does what for me now - and it is Westminster's fault anyway - so, it is easier to put it the wrong way."

Lords forced to back down on tax credits motion as Tory rebellion grows | Money | The Guardian
An attempt by peers to kill off proposed cuts to tax credits has been rebuffed by the government after it warned the House of Lords that they will trigger a full-scale constitutional crisis if they press ahead with their plans. As the chancellor faced a growing rebellion against the cuts among Tory MPs on Tuesday, the government told the non-party group of crossbench peers that they could risk a renewed push to weaken the powers of the upper house if they refused to back down. The high-stakes warning by the government came after Baroness Meacher, a crossbench who is the former chair of the East London NHS Trust, threatened to table a “fatal motion” to kill off the cuts to tax credits. //&! bit.ly/1RonyY3 - The Commons Speaker, John Bercow, has sent a clear warning to the Lords not to overreach itself by blocking the government’s plan to cut tax credits, saying “the constitutional position is clear and longstanding”.

Rezension ǀ Was wäre ein selbstbestimmtes Leben?
Doctors, teachers, the police – public servants are demoralised | Will Hutton | Comment is free | The Guardian
To toil in the present-day NHS is thankless. [...] Whatever its merits, a workforce whose morale is already low sees it as yet more evidence that professionals’ views don’t count. Morale takes a further downward lurch. [...] Thus by 2020, the government will have imposed an unprecedented 10-year freeze in real pay across the public sector, shrunk its numbers by more than 1.5 million and offered as little upward career progression to public employees as it possibly can. A new industry of private contractors feeding off contracted-out public work will have been invented, offering even worse pay and conditions than the public sector itself. To raise taxes that might alleviate the crisis is ideologically prohibited. [...] Employees are voting with their feet. Between November 2013 and November 2014, 49,120 teachers quit – the highest rate on record. Nearly four in 10 newly qualified teachers leave after their first year. [...] [ Met warned less police officers on street ]

Prospect of TTIP already undermining EU food standards, say campaigners | Business | The Guardian
Opponents of Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership say EU negotiator has admitted to approving entry of banned goods [...] EU negotiators will resume controversial trade talks with the US on Monday amid claims that multinational companies have jumped the gun in advance of any agreement to import goods that are currently banned – including genetically modified crops and chemically washed beef – into European markets. These 5 Facts Explain the Worrying Rise of Europe’s Far-Right | TIME
Economic instability, populist politicians and a refugee wave is changing the face of politics in Europe Another round of elections, another push from increasingly vocal nationalists. Austria’s far-right Freedom Party gave the Social Democrats a run for their money in local elections over the past weekend, but fell short of capturing Vienna’s mayoralty. What started as an oddity in European politics has quickly become a disturbing pattern. These five facts explain the rise of the radical right in Europe, its causes and its implications for the region.

Cameron responds to Question Time tax credits complaint | Money | The Guardian
[S]he & her four children were entirely dependent on a combination of working tax credits & child benefits because her business did not make a profit. “I get £400 a week in tax credits, child maintenance from my ex-partner & child benefit. And that’s what I live on. What I make from the business goes straight back into it.” Dorrell, who accused the Tories of telling lies to her and others in a similar situation [...] The House of Commons has approved the cuts to tax credits, with only a handful of Conservatives rebelling against the measures. [...] [The] IFS & the Resolution Foundation say the welfare cuts in Osborne’s summer budget will leave some of Britain’s poorest families up to £1,300 a year out of pocket. Paul Johnson, the director of the IFS, has said it is “arithmetically impossible” for workers not to lose out from the cuts. //&! bit.ly/1jsM5AQ - The ‘work penalty’ will hit the strivers of the country & youtu.be/wrbu6NFazfU & bit.ly/1Pn59NQ & bit.ly/1h98H3X

Does the government hate young people? It certainly feels that way | Rhiannon Lucy Cosslett | Comment is free | The Guardian
[ u-25s not included in minimum wage, housing benefits ] We’d love to grow up, we really would. But policies on everything from student loans to housing seem designed to ensure we can never achieve adulthood [...] We have been disproportionately affected by recession and austerity. According to research published by the Resolution Foundation earlier this year, 22 to 29 year-olds saw a 12.5% fall in wages between 2009 and 2014. Working-age households suffered a 4% cut to their incomes, while pensioner households saw theirs jump by almost 10% between 2007 and 2014.

Robots are coming for your job. That might not be bad news
The problem with automation isn’t technology. The problem is capitalism. // [ Deflationary pressure, 3bn people in developing world and frontier markets unemployed, waiting to join workforce. ] [ who buys the gadgets and widgets when half the world is unemployed ] // This time, as Martin Ford argues in Rise of The Robots, education and upscaling won’t help us. There will simply be fewer jobs to go around, as everything from accountancy to journalism will be done faster, cheaper and more efficiently by machines. The result, as Jerry Kaplan agrees in Humans Need Not Apply, is that billions will be left destitute – unless we radically rethink our way of keeping people fed.

Laurie Anderson: 'Capitalism is a disaster for human relations' | Film | The Guardian
The experimental artist and director talks about her new film, The Heart of a Dog, the trouble with social media – and coming to terms with death [...] But if your brand is just you, is that uncomfortable? Extremely. It’s even worse to market your style. It’s truly sad. And everyone on Facebook has the same sort of marketing ploy selling their image. What does that do to people? It’s extremely brutalising that you’re going to be for sale. It’s one of the worst things you can possibly imagine. Go to any party and you see that: I just don’t think you’re worth talking to. Someone else has a bigger plus sign over their heads. Capitalism is an absolute disaster for human relations. // social isolation, deprivation, Perspektivlosigkeit, Free Will, Dopamine, mobile homescreen, social alienation,

Profit mean reversion and recession | Credit Writedowns
We are now in the seventh year of a cyclical recovery and bull market. Shares have tripled in that time frame. I would say this means we are much closer to the end of the business cycle than the beginning. Moreover, as Jeremy Grantham is quoted in the Business Insider piece, profits are mean-reverting and right now they are reverting from a phase that is “wildly optimistic” according to Warren Buffett. All of this is taking place against the backdrop of an economy in which wage growth is weak, household debt is still relatively high on a historic basis as a percentage of income and we have no policy room on the monetary side, with limited political appetite for policy on the fiscal side. To me, the pre-conditions for this profits recession speak to downside risk, ....

Scientists Under Attack - Trailer - YouTube
Can we still trust our scientists? This timely documentary explores how the heavy hand of the agriculture industry is steering ‘science’ towards its own interests, eliminating legitimate research and silencing any critical opinions. Taking a close look at genetic engineering and the powerful vested interests that dominate its research, ‘Scientists Under Attack’ reveals the frightening reality of modern science, as objective investigation is corrupted by corporate money. // Animals are Fed GM crop. Did David Cameron’s conference speech manage to capture the centre ground? | Politics | The Guardian
The prime minister stood up before his party in Manchester – and then studiously ignored heartland Tory topics. He dwelled instead on social justice, poverty and prison reform. It was an audacious attempt to reset British politics, move to the centre and consolidate his party’s grip on power. Will his move succeed, and how it might reshape the political landscape?

How The Socialist Surge is Growing - YouTube
via Robert Reich on.fb.me/1Pn6XFK - According to a New York Times investigation reported this morning, just 358 families and the businesses they control have contributed over half the money to the 2016 presidential election so far – mostly to Republicans who have pledged to pare regulations; cut taxes on income, capital gains and inheritances; and shrink Social Security and Medicare. On the other hand, two-thirds of Americans support higher taxes on those earning $1 million or more a year, according to a June New York Times/CBS News poll, and six in 10 favor more government intervention to reduce the gap between the rich and the poor. And according to the Pew Research Center, nearly seven in 10 favor preserving Social Security and Medicare benefits as they are. To an extent we haven’t seen since the Gilded Age of the 1890s, the upcoming election is between a tiny group of super-rich and the rest of us. We must do everything possible to reclaim our democracy.
