(9098) Did the Sokal affair "destroy postmodernism"? - YouTube
"society of the spectacle" - The Society of the Spectacle is a 1967 work of philosophy and Marxist critical theory by Guy Debord, in which the author develops and presents the concept of the Spectacle. The book is considered a seminal text for the Situationist movement. // Mass media and commodity fetishism - Comparison between religion and marketing https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Society_of_the_Spectacle --- In his analysis of the spectacular society, Debord notes that the quality of life is impoverished,[6] with such a lack of authenticity that human perceptions are affected, and an attendant degradation of knowledge, which in turn hinders critical thought.[7] Debord analyzes the use of knowledge to assuage reality: the spectacle obfuscates the past, imploding it with the future into an undifferentiated mass, a type of never-ending present; in this way the spectacle prevents individuals from realizing that the society of spectacle is only a moment in history, one that can be overturned through revolution.[8][9] << see by Byung-chul han - Psycho politics and the tired exhausted depressed worker who can't imagine getting up for a revolution. thus votes brexit and trump. where am I getting my pizza if we have a revolution?

In search of surrogates, foreign couples descend on Ukraine - BBC News
Foreign couples have been coming to this corner of Europe in droves since 2015, when surrogacy hotspots in Asia began closing their industries one-by-one, amid reports of exploitation. Barred from India, Nepal and Thailand, they turned to Ukraine, one of the few places left where surrogacy can still be arranged at a fraction of what it costs in the US.

"We have so many childless couples coming to our country - it's like a conveyor belt," says Ana, who asked for her identity to be protected.

When she was 21, and after some years of hotel work, Ana finally decided to become a surrogate. By then she had a daughter and realised she was eligible. Under Ukrainian law, a surrogate must have a child of their own before carrying someone else's. If you have your own child, you are less likely to become attached to the one you must give away, those who recruit the women say. [...] Europe's capital of surrogacy
Demand for surrogacy in Ukraine "has increased probably 1000% in the last two years alone," says Sam Everingham of Families Through Surrogacy, a Sydney-based charity that advises would-be parents.

The country, he adds, "has found itself almost accidentally as one of the handful of nation states" which allow surrogacy tourism.

End austerity – and kickstart Martin Luther King’s revolution of values | Richard Kozul-Wright | Opinion | The Guardian
Hyperglobalisation has concentrated massive wealth in a few hands, boosting the cult of materialism that the great civil rights campaigner warned us about // Byung-Chul Han // The real threat now is to the underlying trust, cohesion and sense of fairness that markets depend upon in order to function effectively. Against this, insisting that “there is no alternative” is yesterday’s political slogan. People everywhere desire much the same thing: a decent job, a secure home, a safe environment, a better future for their children and a government that listens and responds to their concerns. They want a different deal from that offered by hyperglobalisation. Prosperity for all cannot be delivered by austerity-minded politicians, rent-seeking corporations and speculative bankers. What is urgently needed now is a global new deal. Three elements – recovery, regulation and redistribution – remain at the heart of any such deal. Book Richard Kozul-Wright is director of the globalisation and development strategies division in the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development. Its annual report, Beyond Austerity: Towards a Global New Deal, is published today

Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg to give away 99% of shares - BBC News
No longer should billionaires wait to die before handing over money to a different generation, Buffet said, in a gushing approval of Silicon Valley's newest and most influential power couple. Everything Mark Zuckerberg does is eyed with intense scrutiny, not least due to the nature of Facebook's business of making money from personal data. But while the 31-year-old's previous charitable efforts have been criticised for being too focused on building Facebook's user base, this latest pledge appears to leave the Facebook business to one side. // vs The best way to do good in the world is not to be a philanthropist. Free Range and Co. - still promoting animal exploitation. Same with don't eat veal (eat the mom) or Foie gras (just eat the bird, don't force-feed the bird to eat the liver). << Single Issue Campaigns still promote animal exploitation. More morally better because you don't eat that kind of cruel meat? // Greenpeace doesn't promote Vegan. Just sustainability. Whole Foods "happy exploitation." << betrayal of animal rights! PETA gave Whole Foods an award for "best animal-friendly." [...] "lessen the suffering." // when its about human rights we take an absolute position. but animal rights public takes no absolute position but talks about meatless Monday's. If it's wrong its wrong. If it violates fundamental human rights, it violates human rights. There are not baby steps. No journey. // Educate people about Veganism. And animal rights will take care of itself. But current Vegan movement is just about "humane" or "compassionate" animal exploitation. Vegan has to be a moral imperative!

Mindfulness has huge health potential – but McMindfulness is no panacea | Jon Kabat-Zinn | Comment is free | The Guardian
[ you own only your thoughts, emotions and health (fitness) ] [ you have to function ] Mindfulness is often misunderstood – so let us be clear about what we are encouraging. In essence, mindfulness – being about attention, awareness, relationality, and caring – is a universal human capacity akin to our capacity for language acquisition. It is a way of being in wise and purposeful relationship with one’s experience, both inwardly and outwardly, with oneself and with others. Thus there is an intrinsic social dimension to its cultivation as well. It usually involves cultivating familiarity and intimacy with aspects of everyday experience that we often take for granted.

Rezension ǀ Was wäre ein selbstbestimmtes Leben?
The more you pursue happiness, the faster it runs from you | Zach Stafford | Comment is free | The Guardian
Psychologist Iris Mauss at the University of California, Berkley found that the pursuit of happiness might just leave you worse off. “Wanting to be happy can make you less happy,” said Mauss in an interview with livescience.com. “If you explicitly and purposely focus on happiness, that appears to have a self-defeating quality.” [...] In her studies, participants who were not happy would begin blaming themselves for feeling sad. They thought it was an immediate flag for their failure, making these negative feelings even more counter-productive. The people who accepted these negative feelings as normal, however, were much happier in the long run. So, accepting your sadness could actually make you feel good. [...] For Darwin, emotions were very much tied to surviving, which requires more than just happiness. [...] Be open about how you’re feeling, don’t try to hide behind it or conceal it. // &! keeping a diary talking to and about yourself compassionately.

The Vergecast 168: Really good codeine - YouTube
min 46 // Instagram increased res for square format, now allowing all photo formats (vertical and landscape, after user hacked the square format - putting in landscape or portrait photos with borders - to make it square) vs what it was and was not and what it only offered on release day. "the great equaliser." all had the same tool, limitations, options, ways to express, make photos more interesting. thus it showed off some specific creative you (how to use your phone camera), not your skill and experience with Photoshop, lighting, photo school rules - that can set you apart. Instagram was a small, limited, enhanced window you your world, to that moment - captured. And now like Social Media. It is being gamed. Exploited. Abused. For specific commercial and or personal purpose. // Instagram was sort of, lucked out, with not being something for everyone. Survivors | Bothsides of the Table
Failure. To most people it smells. People are afraid of it. It’s like cancer or divorce. When you have it you find you who your true friends are because they’re the ones who double down on helping, on being available, on listening, on understanding. Most people run from failure or disease because they’re hard to handle. Hard to know how to deal with. Awkward. But I am attracted to those who have had severe set-backs in life because it tells you something about the mettle of the person with whom you’re dealing. It reminds me of a famous quote in one of my favorite novel’s “Damage” by Josephine Hart “Damaged people are dangerous. They know they can survive.” [...] closed up shop at the very first hurdle. I wouldn’t work with him again. [...] Honor is what I’m looking for. How you failed is significantly more important than if you failed.
