Full-time work is no bar to poverty in UK, report says | Society | The Guardian
Despite at least one adult working full time, millions of households cannot make ends meet, Joseph Rowntree Foundation reports [...] Millions of households struggle to make ends meet even though they include at least one adult in full-time work, according to a report by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF). Living standards have declined since 2008 despite the economy’s return to growth, the anti-poverty charity said, warning that families with children are at particular risk of a life in poverty. [...] The MIS is determined by asking members of the public to define what is needed to “live to an adequate level”. The threshold is £16,850 for a single person, £25,600 for a lone parent with one child and £36,060 for a single breadwinner with two children. [...] Approximately 11.6 million people in the UK live below the MIS, [...] An improving economy alone is not guaranteed to reverse this rise.” [...] [ no economic security in this recovery! ]

Can Liverpool's new hospital make the whole city healthier – and wealthier? | Cities | The Guardian
Jackson also says the trust is working hard to reduce the length of time patients – especially older people – will stay in the hospital. In part by helping people to stay at home for longer and return home more quickly. “Gerontologists will tell you that a 60-year-old who spends 14 nights in hospital will age 10 years,” Jackson says. Speeding up the time it takes to generate results such as ultrasounds will also reduce the time all patients have to spend in the hospital. [...] Despite the city’s fortunes improving in recent years, Liverpool is still one of the most deprived areas of the country [...] while the average household income is £22,787 – £14,000 lower than the national average (pdf) – and four in 10 children live in low income households – more than double the national average.

I had alcohol-related breast cancer. Here’s why I still drink | Joanna Moorhead | Opinion | The Guardian
The chief medical officer advises women to think about cancer when having a drink. But if I did that every time I had a glass of wine, I think I’d feel the cancer had won [...] I guess what it comes down to is quite simply the importance of enjoying life. When I had cancer, I discovered that I didn’t just want to survive; I wanted to have fun, to make the most of every single day, and to enjoy happy occasions and meals with my friends and family. [...] drinking wine, beer or tequila adds a dimension to social occasions that I rather enjoy. And somehow it feels to me that it wasn’t worth surviving cancer if I’m going to limit my life to thinking, every time someone offered me a glass of something, about my breast cancer and the likelihood of it returning. [...] Life is too short to cut out something you enjoy in moderation, [ picking up the words from the food lobby, heart disease and cancer in moderation. sprinkling in doubt. to continue that lifestyle. do you say asbestos in mod? ]

Young people 'priced out of sport' after leaving school - BBC News
Young people are being squeezed out of sport because a third live in poverty and the cost of taking part is too high, according to a study. [...] Low incomes and debt problems mean even small additional costs are unaffordable, it adds. School sport is often free or very low cost, but this provision ends when young people leave school, says the report. In addition, teenagers are often wary of taking up informal, low-cost sporting activities, fearing anti-social behaviour and poor supervision of open spaces. "It was eye-opening to learn just how much joining in matters to young people, how much informal games, outdoor activity and sport can inspire and motivate them, yet how many children and young people are held back from actively getting involved," said author, Prof Anne Power.

[...] Ungleichheit zwischen den sozialen Gruppen verstärkt.

Mindfulness has huge health potential – but McMindfulness is no panacea | Jon Kabat-Zinn | Comment is free | The Guardian
[ you own only your thoughts, emotions and health (fitness) ] [ you have to function ] Mindfulness is often misunderstood – so let us be clear about what we are encouraging. In essence, mindfulness – being about attention, awareness, relationality, and caring – is a universal human capacity akin to our capacity for language acquisition. It is a way of being in wise and purposeful relationship with one’s experience, both inwardly and outwardly, with oneself and with others. Thus there is an intrinsic social dimension to its cultivation as well. It usually involves cultivating familiarity and intimacy with aspects of everyday experience that we often take for granted.

Iain Duncan Smith calls people without a disability "normal"
The art of cruelty: why the Conservative attack on disabled people harms us all. No sick person responds to their diagnosis by thinking, “I can scam taxpayers for £73 a week!” [...] Not only is in-work poverty a larger drain on the benefits system than the unemployed, but most of the things that help disabled people get back to work have been cut. [...] They got away with this by launching an all-out propaganda assault that portrays disabled and workless people as “scroungers”, “sponging” off the state, when presumably they should be grateful not to be left on a hillside to die as would have been done in the good old days. [...] This is Tory Britain. [...] The welfare state is being dismantled and rebuilt as a machine to manage and discipline the workforce into accepting precarious labour, low pay and no social safety net. [...] this way the Tories can persuade the most vulnerable in society to accept their fate and the rest of us to believe that they deserve it. [...] moral hazard

BBC One - Panorama, Tough Justice in Britain - Texas Style
As the UK's imprisonment rate remains the highest in western Europe, Panorama joins Michael Gove - the man in charge of British prisons - on a fact-finding mission in Texas. 'Hang 'em high' Texas is not the first place you might look for lessons in criminal justice - they execute more people and lock up more offenders than anywhere else in America. But now this conservative state is the unlikely centre of a rehabilitation-led revolution in prison reform that's sweeping through the US. Crime is down, prisoner numbers have fallen and, on top of this, they have cut costs. Are there valuable lessons to be learned here, and are UK politicians really ready to dole out some Texan justice?

Report author Baljit Gill said: "There are concentrations of deprivation in large urban conurbations, areas that have historically had large heavy industry, manufacturing and or mining sectors, coastal towns, and large parts of east London. Mike Ueberroth - Mobile Uploads
Malala Yousafzai & Kylie Jenner. Both turned 18 recently. One was given a Ferrari and spent thousands on facial modification. The other was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize, survived a gun shot to the face by the Taliban due to corruption in her country, and opened a school for Syrian refugees to combat the lack of education for youth around the world. What's upsetting is the media is only covering one of these stories as "breaking news." Share the post to spread real love and inspiration across the youth of the world. Last thing to note, Malala is infinitely more beautiful! **re-posted // hard things are hard for a reason! // what happens to the cognitive surplus what everyone talked about at the turn of the century? its being eaten by consumption pattern - on the mobile homescreen (Entertainment, utility, Gaming, Escapeism, snacking).

Sex trafficking: Lifelong struggle of exploited children - BBC News
In the US, poverty, deprivation and exploitation draws thousands of its own children down into a dark underworld that offers few ways out. [...] The FBI says child sex abuse is almost at an epidemic level, despite the agency rescuing 600 children last year. [...] "Trafficking" often conjures images of people from other countries being smuggled over land and across the sea and then forced to work against their will in foreign lands. People are trafficked into America from Mexico, Central and South America. But the vast majority of children bought and sold for sex every night in the United States are American kids. We have heard from a number of women from the East coast to the Mid-west who have frighteningly similar and horrific stories. Neglected, abused, exploited and often ignored starting from a young age - sometimes even prosecuted by the very people who should have protected them.

Obese people and drug users who refuse treatment could have benefits cut | Society | The Guardian
A nanny state for those that cost the state (directly, and now), because it fits their message 'only work pays'! what a double standard. what a intellectual dishonesty and cynicism. And again putting it like it is a 'lifestyle choice' being addicted and or obese. That one chose consciously, in order not to 'work.' // if people work, and are overweight, have diabetes, obese, high blood pressure, take statins, runing their liver long-term with alcohol abuse (functioning alcoholic, drug user) etc etc - costing the NHS especially long-term (sick population) - it is ok, but if they don't work. it's not ok. // after all, substance abuse, in majority of cases has a mental health (history) & social environment (nurture) component to it. Much complexity to it. And cutting services to actually help & prevent people going down the route of abuse doesn't help. A Never-Ending Economic Crisis?
In 2008, the global economy experienced a brutal financial retraction not seen since the 1930s. The value of virtually every asset in the world was reappraised downward, led by housing in the United States. The situation was like an unstoppable force of nature. In response, most of the world’s central banks, including the Federal Reserve in the United States, slashed short-term interest rates to near zero percent and flooded the financial system with liquidity. World governments produced fiscal-stimulus packages of mind-boggling size. Global governments spent an astonishing $17 trillion to support the world economy in the form of bailouts, guarantees, and stimulus packages. To put this number in perspective, $17 trillion represents one quarter of global GDP. Aggregate government budget deficits jumped by 737 percent over the previous year.
