Facebook founding president sounds alarm - BBC News
do you know your neighbour? Chomsky manufactured consent. perfect personal propagandist. outrage machine. time waster. feedback loop for No Representation feelings. “I use these platforms, I just don’t let these platforms use me,” // Adam Curtis - FB can not present you with a future, a proposal. bc it is insular isolated environment (perfect personal propagandist) even if you are 'connected with the world.' It's a sham. Its millions of bubbles. not "A" world connected. Occypy was better than facebook. But Occupy hat not even a handful of leaders. political social economic movements need leaders to refer to, dialogue, interview, sign policy papers, etc etc. mass democracy still needs a leader and leadershuip and management and people skills. see Momentum.

Facebook’s war on free will | Technology | The Guardian
In reality, Facebook is a tangle of rules and procedures for sorting information, rules devised by the corporation for the ultimate benefit of the corporation. Facebook is always surveilling users, always auditing them, using them as lab rats in its behavioural experiments. While it creates the impression that it offers choice, in truth Facebook paternalistically nudges users in the direction it deems best for them, which also happens to be the direction that gets them thoroughly addicted. It’s a phoniness that is most obvious in the compressed, historic career of Facebook’s mastermind. [...] The problem is that when we outsource thinking to machines, we are really outsourcing thinking to the organisations that run the machines.

Facebook is putting ads everywhere in hopes of finding the next News Feed - Recode
[ Tipping Point, topped out! Das ist kein Tech-Journalismus, sondern ein Haufen Müll. News Feed verliert dramatisch Aufmerksamkeit. Diese Zahlen sollten genannt werden. ] But there is a problem looming: Facebook has been saying for the past year that it is running out of places to put ads in News Feed. The company has determined that it can’t put more ads into users’ feeds without harming their experience. The industry term for this is ratio of ads to other content is called “ad load,” and Facebook says News Feed’s ad load is all maxed out.

Facebook says its revenue growth will slow down “meaningfully” this year as a result.

Facebook’s new algorithm change is what makes publishers so afraid of Facebook - Recode
Today, Facebook announced that it’s tweaking its algorithm so that users see less stuff shared by publishers and brands and more stuff from friends and family. This isn’t a nightmare scenario for publishers, but it’s pretty grim; websites and news organizations are leaning more and more on Facebook for growing their audiences, and Facebook just weakened a key traffic driver for them. //&! I hesitate to make this analogy, but publishers relying on Facebook are starting to look a whole lot like drivers who keep trusting Uber to make their lives better. - http://bit.ly/29kik4J

From social media to the catwalk, is fantasy beauty failing young women? | Life and style | The Guardian
The world of vloggers and YouTubers has created a perverse, homogenised “beauty” with no diversity or reality. Jane Cunningham, journalist [...] The concept of appearance as a commodity to be valued has filtered from Hollywood to family homes across the UK. A 2013 attitudes survey by the Guide Association finding that 87% of girls aged 11-21 believe women are judged more on their appearance than their ability. The dissatisfaction resulting from the oft-perpetuated narrow vision of a beauty ideal can lead to low self-esteem – and worse. Jane Cunningham, the journalist behind Britishbeautyblogger.com, says young girls come to her in tears, feeling hopeless and helpless, unable to reconcile their own appearance with what they believe to be beautiful.

Every Day I Want To Quit Social Media
[ no more time to reflect and think for yourself ... we are all and feel Alon Together. ] I am drowning in a sea of anxiety created by Twitter and Facebook. [...] We all want to be recognized as clever or witty. [ your best side, public ] [...] I ended up on social media for a reason, and though the reason escapes me during moments of sheer panic and anxiety, I take part, no matter what — the pursuit of relevancy, or, in the strictest sense of the term, validation, is an imperative that exists as a key part of humankind’s quest for meaning. Self-definition has become intertwined with social media. We are all here for each other. I wake up staring at my phone. I fall asleep to the glow of the very same screen.

Spare Me Your Sh*tty Advertising - YouTube
"advertising business model doesn't make sense." for publishers! Business insider makes 50cent per user per year. ARPU. OUCH! It's like worse than brand awareness banner advertising. Everyone should be doing something lefty. The internet was abt that. Now its everyone wants 2 be big. Optimised. Cool things come out of waste, wasting times, free time, ... eureka effect. The Vergecast 168: Really good codeine - YouTube
min 46 // Instagram increased res for square format, now allowing all photo formats (vertical and landscape, after user hacked the square format - putting in landscape or portrait photos with borders - to make it square) vs what it was and was not and what it only offered on release day. "the great equaliser." all had the same tool, limitations, options, ways to express, make photos more interesting. thus it showed off some specific creative you (how to use your phone camera), not your skill and experience with Photoshop, lighting, photo school rules - that can set you apart. Instagram was a small, limited, enhanced window you your world, to that moment - captured. And now like Social Media. It is being gamed. Exploited. Abused. For specific commercial and or personal purpose. // Instagram was sort of, lucked out, with not being something for everyone. No it has become that thing that can be used by everyone - for their purpose. Follows it being primed for advertisers ...

800-Pound Publishing Gorilla Facebook Barges Back Into Blogging With “Notes” | TechCrunch
Facebook’s advantage is its distribution. The same weapon it’s used to barge into web publishing with Instant Articles and video hosting with its auto-play clips could help it invade blogging. It’s similar to how LinkedIn used its natural traffic to launch a professional-minded publishing network. People will write where they get an audience. If that’s Facebook, they’ll publish there. And while Twitter doesn’t discriminate, showing every post to everyone, Facebook’s filtered feed shows you what it thinks you’ll actually consume [and what's in their best own interest, keeping you on FB, favouring native content of link-out content]. [ step by step, FB is productizing - offering more to advertisers how to reach their user base, leverage its huge user base, Big Data, users data, the ceiling for FB earnings is far off! and thus its market cap (valuation). could nearly double again from its 250bn. it doubled in 5 years from IPO slump. ] // &! wrd.cm/1Pw2v5w

Networks and the Nature of the Firm — The WTF Economy — Medium
“publish, then filter” - Clay Shirky. >> It is fundamentally an open-ended network in which filtering and curation (otherwise known as “management”) happens largely after the fact. [ Twitter lacks a management/curation feature, has to overcome its once cheered differentiator of no curating nor using algorithms to make sense of the noise one subscribed to. ] [...] [ Replacing knowledgeable workers, sales person, support staff, with software. ] One way to think about the new generation of on-demand companies, such as Uber, Lyft, and Airbnb, is that they are networked platforms for physical world services, which are bringing fragmented industries into the 21st century in the same way that ecommerce has transformed retail. [...] This fragmented industry [Taxi] provides work not just for drivers but for managers, dispatchers, maintenance workers, and bookkeepers.

Maker Studios May Not Hit Disney Earn-Out Goals | Re/code
The most significant issue for Kreiz and other Maker executives and investors will likely come down to money. There’s no dispute about the fact that Maker has continued to grow under Disney, but it appears that Maker hasn’t hit goals it thought it could clear in May 2014 (I don’t know how the specific earn-out goals are structured). It’s not unusual for acquired companies to miss earn-out goals — it may be more common than not. But at the time of the deal, Maker backers seemed unusually confident about their ability to get all or most of the extra $450 million Disney might pay out. [ ... ] [ apparently, income ] generated per view has decreased.

Pando: “Video is an unfair advantage you either join or lose” [SPONSORED]
your Newsfeed in Facebook became 50% video over night, and those videos started to autoplay, grabbing all of your attention. I think the change was dramatic, and it changed social media from being this static journal to something where everything is moving all the time. [...] Video is not even remotely close to photos when it comes to complication, but it’s also 1000 times more powerful. [...] Just to give you an example, consider, autoplay video. It has different requirements. It needs to capture your attention very fast. When we design for autoplay video, how do we create the first few seconds to capture your attention? [ GaryV does edit his videos between YT and FB differently! ] [...] We expect the market will penalize someone who is not prioritizing video. Facebook Brings Auto-Play Video Ads To Apps In Its Mobile Ad Network | TechCrunch
[ it doesn't disrupt (well, less) the experience, flow, ... like a washing powder ad on TV during GoT episode, after somebodies head was cut off ] Facebook’s making a killing with its native, in-feed, auto-play video ads, and now it’s going to let other developers earn money off them too. Today Facebook announced that it’s opening up its own best-performing ad units to publishers that show Facebook’s Audience Network ads to monetize their apps. Facebook says Audience Network publishers using its native ad units get 7X better performance than on their traditional banner ads.

Is Facebook Lying About Video Views? — Medium
statistics and accounting, how is what counted when. // In fact, I was a little bit shocked to find out that Facebook counts a view as a view after the first three seconds whether or not the user has activated the audio for the video. I figured that actually listening to the content (rather than just staring at what is at that point just an animated GIF) would be necessary to count a view. Indeed it’s not. YouTube has been vague about how they count a view, but they’ve said that it’s counted after “about 30 seconds.” Facebook on the other hand is explicit, they count it as a view after three seconds of a silent, auto-played video. I should at least give them credit for being transparent about their misrepresentation. [...] I’m fairly certain that this is intentional on Facebook’s part. Banner “Fraud” Doesn’t Matter | Hacker News
bit.ly/1Jb27sI "A Message from brand marketers to publishers [...] We use banners as little billboards now. We use them strategically as incredibly cheap repeat impressions for brand awareness. We know many people don’t see them, we know most people don’t see them. Thats okay. We use them accordingly & the cost has been adjusted down to make them a perfectly great buy even though most people dont see them. [...] It’s an indicator to us that you don’t get this by the fact you’re still always talking about clickthrough, which was kind of BS when you first sold it to us twenty years ago, and doubly the case now." [ CPM will go lower, fundamentals point in that direction, Social Media & other future forms of advertising will fill in the lower CPM rates overall. Thus pressuring business models reliant on pageviews even more 2 increase pageviews as the revenue average per pageview declines. Thus u have 2 question which consumer product (entertainment & else) business model do you choose!?

Are Facebook’s algorithms killing YouTube?
YouTube may be learning what publishers have known for some time now: That Facebook’s algorithms are enormously powerful and that Zuckerberg isn’t content to dominate social media [...] Two of the biggest tech stories in 2015 are the increasing power of Facebook's algorithms and YouTube's uncertain future. [...] And now these two trends have collided in epic fashion as Facebook may be leveraging its algorithms to help kill YouTube – or at least steal an enormous portion of its audience. // slate.me/1NP1fZU - Last year on his podcast Hello Internet, the Australian filmmaker Brady Haran coined the term freebooting to describe the act of taking someone’s YouTube video and re-uploading it on a different platform for your own benefit. “I had long said I found the word ‘copyright infringement’ somehow inadequate,”

It's official: Google blew it with YouTube, and Facebook has caught up | Nicholas Carlson | LinkedIn
"In April, Facebook hit 4 billion views per day, matching the latest estimates available for 10-year-old YouTube." [...] This is a core mission for Facebook. Facebook has become "synonymous with mobile," Facebook ad exec Carolyn Everson says. "I think that the next frontier is becoming synonymous with mobile video." People used to share video from other sites on Facebook. In February, however, "70% of Facebook's videos were uploaded directly," Griffith reports. Griffith: "Complex Media reports average completion rates of 78% for its Facebook videos, which last two to 10 minutes." Facebook has tweaked its News Feed algorithm to favor video, according to one Facebook page owner. If you have a page with a million followers, your photos will reach 14% of your followers, your text-only posts will reach 4%, and your videos will reach 35%.
