Redaction error reveals FBI did target Lavabit to spy on Edward Snowden
A redaction oversight by the US government has finally confirmed that the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s targeting of secure email service Lavabit was used specifically to spy on Edward Snowden.

Ladar Levison, creator of the email service, which was founded on a basis of private communications secured by encryption and had 410,000 users, was served a sealed order in 2013 forcing him to aid the FBI in its surveillance of Snowden.

Levison was ordered to install a surveillance package on his company’s servers and later to turn over Lavabit’s encryption keys so that it would give the FBI the ability to read the most secure messages that the company offered. He was also ordered not to disclose the fact to third-parties.

Pando: At what point is the convenience of technology outweighed by the constant stress?
Yesterday, I wrote about new proposals to allow the government to trawl the social media accounts of visa applicants before allowing or denying entry to the US.  Specifically, I wrote about my relief, as a visa-carrying foreign worker, at having deleted my social media accounts last year. For all the myriad reasons the government might declare me unworthy of living here -- particularly under President Trump -- at least an old dumb tweet won’t be one of them. UK to send five ships to Baltic as part of Nato buildup against Russia | Politics | The Guardian
Britain will also contribute troops to a new 6,000-strong force that is intended to act as a deterrent [...] After years of steady military withdrawal from Europe since the end of the cold war, the US last week announced a quadrupling of military spending to $3.4bn (£2.35bn) to increase its presence in Europe as a counter to Russia. The UK contribution, though modest by comparison, is still significant given the extent to which the navy has been reduced after years of cutbacks.

The Pentagon has fired the first shot in a new arms race | Mary Dejevsky | Opinion | The Guardian
In a speech in Washington last week, previewing his announcement, Ash Carter said he would ask for spending on US military forces in Europe to be quadrupled in the light of “Russian aggression”. The allocation for combating Islamic State, in contrast, is to be increased by 50%. The message is unambiguous: as viewed from the Pentagon, the threat from Russia has become more alarming, suddenly, even than the menace that is Isis. [...] In the last months of his presidency, this detachment is ending. The additional funds for Europe’s defence are earmarked for new bases and weapons stores in Poland and the Baltic states. There will be more training for local Nato troops, more state-of-the-art hardware and more manoeuvres. [ ... + MH17 downing w Russian ground to air defense missile ]

Draft snooper's charter 'fails on spying powers and privacy protections' | World news | The Guardian
Theresa May’s draft “snooper’s charter” bill fails to cover all the intrusive spying powers of the security agencies and lacks clarity in its privacy protections, a parliamentary committee has said. The intelligence and security committee said the draft legislation published by the home secretary suffered from a lack of sufficient time and preparation. It was evident that even those working on the legislation had not always been clear about what it was intended to achieve, it said.

Can we really trust judges to protect reporters' confidential sources? | Media | The Guardian
Journalists won’t even be safe to talk email whistleblowers from a coffee shop [...] In stressing that the powers would not be used for mass surveillance, May said the onus would be on the home office to show necessity and proportionality. And who would decide whether that was justified? Judicial commissioners, she said. They would operate a “double-lock” authorisation process on intercept and bulk interception warrants in order to prevent intrusive snooping. [ old boys club with career interests? titles, pensions? ] But will this judicial oversight provide enough protection? That’s the key worry for journalists who now know that there is nowhere for them to conceal their communications with confidential sources. Apple raises concerns over UK's draft surveillance bill - BBC News
The US-based firm has passed on its thoughts to a parliamentary committee scrutinising the legislation. It focuses on three issues: encryption, the possibility of having to hack its own products, and the precedent it would set by agreeing to comply with UK-issued warrants. The Home Secretary Theresa May said last month that the proposed powers were needed to fight crime and terror. [...] But Apple appears to be concerned that the bill's language could still be interpreted more expansively and force the creation of a so-called "backdoor" to provide the authorities with access. Apple argues that the existence of such a backdoor would risk creating a weakness that others then might exploit, making users' data less secure. [...] Overseas warrants A second area of concern relates to the issue of "extra-territoriality". Existing British legislation - and the bill - maintain that companies need to comply with warrants for information wherever they are based and wherever the data resides.

Xi Jinping state visit: UK and China sign cybersecurity pact | Politics | The Guardian
[ this is just show: https://wikileaks.org/nsa-germany/selectors.html // look at cable gate. what officials wrote and what was said in-front of cameras and press. ] Cameron said the two nations had signed a “high-level security dialogue” on cybercrime, aimed at stopping attacks on companies either to gain access to intellectual property or confidential information or to disable systems. The deal mirrors one agreed between China and the US last month, but which the American monitoring group CrowdStrike believes was violated almost immediately. GCHQ has reported “disturbing” levels of cyber-attacks on British companies, which are thought mostly to originate in Russia and China. The agreement is the first time that Britain and China have committed to work together on cybersecurity.

A Second Snowden Has Leaked a Mother Lode of Drone Docs | WIRED
On Thursday the Intercept published a groundbreaking new collection of documents related to America’s use of unmanned aerial vehicles to kill foreign targets in countries ranging from Afghanistan to Yemen. The revelations about the CIA and Joint Special Operations Command actions include primary source evidence that as many as 90 percent of US drone killings in one five month period weren’t the intended target, that a former British citizen was killed in a drone strike despite repeated opportunities to capture him instead, and details of the grisly process by which the American government chooses who will die, down to the “baseball cards” of profile information created for individual targets, and the chain of authorization that goes up directly to the president.1

U.S. and China Seek Arms Deal for Cyberspace - The New York Times
In the last year there have been devastating Chinese hacks of American computer systems, and the U.S. government has floated the idea of sanctioning China in response. Here's the apparent response: A noticeable downtick in significant hacks of American networks, and news that the U.S. and China are working on a cybersecurity arms deal, ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping's Thursday arrival in America. The proposed agreement would supposedly prevent either nation from attacking the other's "critical infrastructure" during peacetime.

Jeremy Corbyn: Labour will campaign for UK to stay in the EU | Politics | The Guardian
McFadden stressed he did not believe Cameron was seeking to undermine those rights in his talks with his EU partners, but recognises that Corbyn is deeply concerned at what he regards is a shift from a social Europe to a free-market Europe. He said: “If the prime minister tries to water down hard won employment protections that would be wrong and foolhardy on his part and we would very strongly oppose it. But if he does try to water down these protections, the right response is not to leave the EU but to fight the 2020 election on a clear commitment to restore those employment rights – and we have to remain in the EU to do that.”

U.S. developing sanctions against China over cyberthefts - The Washington Post
[ double standard. probably know that they will be outed come time to have e-mailed trade secrets of other nations big companies to their own national companies, even if it is just for infrastructure or defense contract bids ] The White House is getting ready to issue "unprecedented economic sanctions" against Chinese companies and individuals "who have benefited from their government’s cybertheft of valuable U.S. trade secrets," says the Washington Post. But the Post doesn't explain what those sanctions would be, or why the U.S. is going after individual targets instead of the Chinese government itself. One thing that is clear: Chinese president Xi Jinping is scheduled to visit the U.S. next month.

TODAY! National interests are only expressed in economic terms with trade embargoes, tariffs, trade deals and protectionism. AT&T has 'extraordinary, decades-long' relationship with NSA – report | US news | The Guardian
New York Times and ProPublica cite newly released NSA documents Telecoms giant assisted with ‘wiretapping United Nations headquarters’ << in ny, isn't that some kind of international territory?
