Tory spending pledges on police, education and childcare 'at risk' | Politics | The Guardian
[ after 7 years of austerity, no end in sight, debt keeps climbing, no to little investment, ... now you have to break promises from 2010 that there are protected budgets, ... to meet your fucking debt reduction promise ] Conservative promises to protect spending on police, sixth form education and childcare are at risk as Philip Hammond demands £3.5bn in new cuts from his cabinet colleagues, according to an analysis by the IPPR thinktank. The IPPR believes the government will not be able to hit its savings target, even allowing for proposed budget cuts, at the same time as meeting spending promises made by George Osborne when he was chancellor. [...] when the Treasury announced a new new drive for “efficiency savings” earlier this week, the only spending commitments that were reaffirmed were Conservative manifesto pledges to protect the core schools budgets and the NHS; and a subsequent promise to meet the Nato target of spending 2% of GDP on defence. [...] “the police budget could now face a further £250 to £500m in cuts that the public were not aware of”. [ LOTS OF UNINTENDED CONSQUENCES ABOUND, YOU SAVED HERE, BUT COSTS CREATED THERE, KNOCK ON EFFECTS! Why Brexit could hurt the US, too
Washington fears that a decision to abandon the European project, in which Britain has been an often-reluctant participant since 1973, would threaten to unravel the union, a vital ally, as it struggles with disunity and unleash a new instability in an already dangerously volatile world.
While advocates of a British departure say the country will be stronger freed from the shackles of Brussels bureaucracy, opponents fear it could dismember the U.K. should Scotland decide its future still lies in the E.U. and demand a fresh independence vote. [...] And throughout his presidency, Obama has expressed irritation at the neediness of European leaders competing for the attention of the American president. He's grumbled that European nations won't do more for NATO and even publicly rebuked Cameron in a recent Atlantic magazine interview for not doing more to bring peace to Libya after a NATO intervention in 2011 pushed by him and other Europeans.

Migrant crisis: Nato deploys Aegean people-smuggling patrols - BBC News
Is it becoming a national security? // The announcement followed a request from Turkey, Germany and Greece at a defence ministers' meeting in Brussels. Mr Stoltenberg said the mission would not be about "stopping or pushing back refugee boats". Nato, he said, will contribute "critical information and surveillance to help counter human trafficking". US defence secretary Ashton Carter earlier said that targeting the "criminal syndicate that is exploiting these poor people" would have the greatest humanitarian impact. The decision was made to help Turkey and Greece "manage a human tragedy in a better way than we have managed to do so far," Mr Stoltenberg, Nato Secretary General, said. [...] Nato's Standing Maritime Group 2, which is under German command, will lead the operation in co-operation with Greek and Turkish coastguards. Almost 75,000 migrants and refugees have already arrived in Greece by sea in 2016, the UN refugee agency says. //&! bit.ly/1PEY7jJ

UK to send five ships to Baltic as part of Nato buildup against Russia | Politics | The Guardian
Britain will also contribute troops to a new 6,000-strong force that is intended to act as a deterrent [...] After years of steady military withdrawal from Europe since the end of the cold war, the US last week announced a quadrupling of military spending to $3.4bn (£2.35bn) to increase its presence in Europe as a counter to Russia. The UK contribution, though modest by comparison, is still significant given the extent to which the navy has been reduced after years of cutbacks.

The Pentagon has fired the first shot in a new arms race | Mary Dejevsky | Opinion | The Guardian
In a speech in Washington last week, previewing his announcement, Ash Carter said he would ask for spending on US military forces in Europe to be quadrupled in the light of “Russian aggression”. The allocation for combating Islamic State, in contrast, is to be increased by 50%. The message is unambiguous: as viewed from the Pentagon, the threat from Russia has become more alarming, suddenly, even than the menace that is Isis. [...] In the last months of his presidency, this detachment is ending. The additional funds for Europe’s defence are earmarked for new bases and weapons stores in Poland and the Baltic states. Syria conflict: Russia air strikes 'killed 200 civilians' - BBC News
At least 200 civilians have been killed in Russian air strikes in Syria, an Amnesty International report says, quoting witnesses and activists. It says it "researched remotely" more than 25 Russian attacks in five areas between 30 September and 29 November. The findings indicate "serious failures [by Russia] to respect international humanitarian law", Amnesty says. Moscow has repeatedly denied causing civilian deaths, describing such claims as part of "information warfare". Russia began air strikes targeting Islamic State militants (IS) and other groups on 30 September, saying it was acting at the request of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Moscow has also been accused of bombing rebel groups opposed to Mr Assad but backed by the West.

MH17 Ukraine disaster: Dutch Safety Board blames missile - BBC News
Malaysian Airlines Flight MH17 crashed as a result of a Russian-made Buk missile, the Dutch Safety Board says. [...] The report does not say who fired the missile, but says airspace over eastern Ukraine should have been closed. [...] A separate Dutch-led criminal investigation is under way.

Why Russia has started bombing Syria now - and what it hopes to achieve | World | News | The Independent
[ via truthdig ] Russia has also decided to move now following the failure of Mr Putin to reach any agreement with the US at the UN General Assembly meeting in New York where the threat of Isis has been high on the agenda. … [Russia’s] priority is to defeat Isis and then save the Assad regime in Damascus. Despite all the controversy over whether Assad should stay or go, the war would carry on in either case. This is very much a civil war with committed supporters on either side. In the short term Russia wants to stop Isis, and if possible defeat it – though this not likely to happen.

Syria crisis: Russia begins air strikes against Assad foes - BBC News
Russia has begun carrying out air strikes in Syria against opponents of President Bashar al-Assad, Moscow has confirmed. The strikes reportedly came in the rebel-controlled area of Hama province. Washington was informed in advance that they were about to take place. Syria's civil war has raged for four years, with armed groups - some of them Islamist, including the Islamic State (IS) group - fighting to overthrow the government. The US and its allies have insisted that President Assad should leave office, while Russia has backed its ally remaining in power. The latest developments came amid reports that President Assad had formally requested Russian military support. //&! Why Putin Wants to Meet Obama - Bloomberg View
Acting alone in Syria would be extremely risky for Russia. Putin can ill afford an unsuccessful military operation. Coordination with the U.S. would greatly increase the chances of success. For the U.S., though, an alliance with Putin comes with strings attached: Once Islamic State is defeated, Washington would need to discuss the post-war setup with Moscow, and they have a poor record of agreeing on anything. Also, if Obama retreated on his commitment to bring down Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and agreed to a smooth transition of power in Damascus, he would give Republicans a new pretext to accuse him of weakness.

The Refugee Crisis Is Changing Angela Merkel - Bloomberg View
Yesterday's meeting between German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the prime ministers of German states yielded an important number. Every incoming asylum seeker will cost the federal government 670 euros per month ($747) plus a further 500 million euros for housing. Amazingly, the huge outlay is not testing Merkel's resolve to accept the refugees or her Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble's determination to balance the budget without new debt. But the chancellor is still going out on a limb: if Germans tire of the influx of Syrians and Iraqis, she will be held responsible. [...] So helping to resolve the Syrian conflict which is the source of the refugee crisis is becoming a matter of political survival for the chancellor and her post-retirement legacy. In a speech on Wednesday, she called for cooperation with Russia, Iran, Turkey and even Syrian President Bashar al-Assad himself -- whom no one else in the West wants to engage --to end the war. //&! bv.ms/1KXyf3p

Russians despair at food destruction as Moscow says it is having desired effect | World news | The Guardian
Russia’s move to ostentatiously destroy banned food imports at the border has sparked debate in a country where millions live below the poverty line [...] Moscow’s reciprocal measures against countries that sanctioned Russia over its actions in Ukraine have been in place for a year, but the new law stipulating the destruction of contraband shipments at the border came into force on Thursday. Importing fruit, vegetables, meat and cheeses from the EU and other countries that instituted sanctions against Russia is banned. Moscow says importers have tried to get round the ban by putting fake labels on produce, claiming it is made in Brazil, Belarus or another sanction-free country. [...] The aim is to hurt western agricultural producers, and in some countries it has indeed had a major economic effect. Nevertheless, food prices have gone up in Russia as a result, and the latest move to destroy imports has created outcry, even among many who are loyal to the government.

Assange Reveals That The West is Behind ISIS And Ukraine Crisis And Israel Behind Hamas AnonHQ
“The IS is A Direct result of the adventurism of the West,” Said Assange. He says the “adventurism” of Western countries has already destroyed the Libyan and Syrian society and now is “destroying Iraq for oil and other geopolitical reasons.” He said that most people are aware of the fact that arms are being funneled into Syria, and that the same agitators who provide these are also focused on reducing Iran’s influence on Iraq. But “what we don’t know is that in recent years in recent years Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey have increased their power and managed to gain certain independence form the US.”

BBC News - How strong is the Nato military alliance?
War in Ukraine and the threat of conflict in the Baltics raise fundamental questions about the West's military alliance. What is Nato - the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation - for? And is it up to the job? [...] Do would-be aggressors still believe that - as stated in Article 5 of Nato's founding treaty - an attack on one Nato member would be treated as an attack on all? [...] 'Putin exploiting Nato's weakness': Former Supreme Allied Commander General Wesley Clark &! http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-31530840 - Russian military planes flying close or over to NATO member Airspace without permission. &! still fighting in Ukraine despite cease-fire agreement - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-31544490
