Almost all the 10 million jobs created since 2005 are temporary — Quartz
“We find that 94% of net job growth in the past decade was in the alternative work category,” said Krueger. “And over 60% was due to the [the rise] of independent contractors, freelancers and contract company workers.” In other words, nearly all of the 10 million jobs created between 2005 and 2015 were not traditional nine-to-five employment. - https://www.reddit.com/r/Economics/comments/79jmuh/almost_all_the_10_million_jobs_created_since_2005/

Government review to order zero-hours contracts overhaul - BBC News
[campaigners are not happy with the watered down draft] The new "right to request" fixed hours could be used by some of the 900,000 people on zero-hours contracts, a number that has risen from 143,000 in 2008.
The contracts have been attacked for allowing some firms to keep people in insecure work, depress wages and deny people their full employee rights. [...] "Two years ago our staff started to tell us they needed some form of contracted hours because they wanted to get mobile phone contracts, car loans and - as they got older - mortgages to buy houses. [...] companies are using the "self-employment" status of people who work for them to avoid tax liabilities such as national insurance payments.

Booming gig economy costs £4bn in lost tax and benefit payouts, says TUC | Business | The Guardian
Study shows low-paid self-employment and zero-hours contracts costing exchequer £75m a week – a quarter of England’s weekly social care budget [...] Their relatively low earnings also make them more likely to need to rely on in-work benefits such as tax credits and housing benefit, the TUC said. [...] “The huge rise in insecure work isn’t just bad for workers. It’s punching a massive hole in the public finances too,” said TUC general secretary Frances O’Grady.

the odds of another crisis are higher than a rally to fresh records. [...]
“The 2009-2015 rally originated from two main drivers: a massive stimulus, and credit expansion in China,” said Goette, who’s a partner at his firm in Zug, Switzerland and helps oversee 1 billion Swiss francs ($1 billion).

“European earnings have not followed suit so far. Skepticism regarding central-bank operations has started to emerge.”

Piketty: EU should welcome one million immigrants a year
"The European Union has the capacity to absorb a large flow of migrants, one million per year in terms of inflow net of outflow," he said.
"This is exactly what we had between 2000 and 2010 and this was working in the sense that unemployment was being reduced.
"The problem is - with the austerity policies and with the recession - now we are in a situation where it's very difficult in particular with southern Europe, with the terrible economic situation that we have created there in particular." [...] The population of the EU has only risen by 0.2% a year since 1995, he argues, compared to 1.2% for the world's population over the same period.
According to Eurostat, the official statistical arm of the European Commission, a total of 3.4 million people came to the EU during 2013. Some 2.8 million left, leaving a net immigration figure of around 600,000. [S]low growth [...] exacerbated not just by a lack of immigration but also by austerity policies aimed at reducing public expenditure. [EU in recession 2011 forward]

German Banks Told To Start Hoarding Cash | Zero Hedge
In order to generate artificial economic growth, the ECB wants banks to make as many loans as possible, no matter how stupid or idiotic. They believe that economic growth is simply a function of loans. The more money that’s loaned out, the more the economy will grow. This is the sort of theory that works really well in an economic textbook. But it doesn’t work so well in a history textbook. Cheap money encourages risky behavior. It gives banks an incentive to give ‘no money down’ loans to homeless people with no employment history. It creates bubbles (like the housing bubble from 10 years ago), and ultimately, financial panics (like the banking crisis from 8 years ago). Banks are supposed to be conservative, responsible managers of other people’s money. When central bank policies penalize that practice, bad things tend to happen.

These 5 Facts Explain the Worrying Rise of Europe’s Far-Right | TIME
Economic instability, populist politicians and a refugee wave is changing the face of politics in Europe Another round of elections, another push from increasingly vocal nationalists. Austria’s far-right Freedom Party gave the Social Democrats a run for their money in local elections over the past weekend, but fell short of capturing Vienna’s mayoralty. World Bank warns on US rate rise - BBC News
[ game of chicken ] [ can private sector carry forward the little bit of recovery/growth the western world got in a rising interest rate world, that will eat away spending bc of higher repayment rates amid little to no wage growth !!! ] [W]arned developing countries to brace themselves for possible financial turbulence when the US Federal Reserve starts to raise interest rates. It could come as early as Thursday when the Fed concludes a policy meeting. A new report from the World Bank says there will probably be a modest impact on developing countries. But it also warns there is some risk that it could be worse. The Bank says it is possible that there would be sufficient disruption to capital flows into developing countries to harm economic growth and financial stability. //&! bit.ly/1QhP6Of //&! youtu.be/G8lCqhCbrA4 //&! youtu.be/KH1UlvgXqTE = bond sell-off move in anticipation of Taper. //&! strength of dollar added already 25bps - youtu.be/zWrxFszwrsQ &! youtu.be/lpTkQqEQmE4

Millennials Can't Afford Cars, and Are Fine With That - Bloomberg View
As somebody who wondered in a column last week whether people in developed countries were perhaps learning that they no longer needed as much stuff as they used to, and whether this might lead to big shifts in the global economy, I read on with great interest. [...] The changes in young adults' consumption habits have clearly been influenced by economic forces. But economic forces shape societal attitudes, too. I also don't see much sign that these economic forces are about to reverse. Both these things can be true: The median 25-to-34-year-old has less to spend, and is less interested in spending it on a car.

There’s nothing good about the rise in zero-hours contracts – ban them now | Peter Fleming | Comment is free | The Guardian
Yet the growing trend, which British employers love, is steadily eroding what used to be called “stable jobs”. We are not just talking about teenage fast-food employees or the struggling artist who lands a call-centre gig to tide them over. Universities and the NHS are among those who have embraced this onward march of workplace rationalisation. [...] Studies looking at the effects of economic insecurity are poignant here. According to some behavioural economists there is no doubt that the endless worry caused by economic uncertainty impedes the body’s immune system and you get sick more. But it also starts to mess with your ability to reason. People start making bad decisions. A bad situation can easily get worse. [...] Zero-hours contracts help to subsidise rich corporations and businesses. [...] phase neoliberalism, with its plutocrats, oligarchs and rentiers back in full swing. [...] But as an astute economist recently put it, we can no longer afford the rich.

More must be done to help people with mental health problems stay in work | Society | The Guardian
More help is urgently needed to help people with mental health problems stay in their jobs, says the government's chief medical officer, warning of the toll of mental illness on individuals and the economy. Dame Sally Davies said that around 70m working days were lost to mental illness last year, costing the economy £70 to £100bn. The number of working days lost to stress, depression and anxiety has risen by 24% since 2009, she says in her annual report. Yet 75% of people with diagnosable mental illness get no treatment at all.

Germany’s bizarre version of capitalism—where bosses and workers actually cooperate—is winning - Quartz
via - http://redd.it/3ge85e // In recent years, some countries have tried to copy elements of German capitalism. With youth unemployment near 50%, Spain is looking to boost German-style apprenticeship programs. France is experimenting with measures that allow unionized companies to cut working hours and preserve jobs during downturns. Britain wants to build a Mittelstand of its own. So far, none have transformed these economies. And they likely won’t. German policies function well because they are designed to work in the context of the German economy, where institutions like trade unions and industry associations have proven uniquely effective at coordinating wages and production over time. “That structure is built up over decades if not centuries,” says Hall, of Harvard. “So countries can’t immediately emulate it.” [...] To be sure, the German system isn’t perfect.

Was ist da los? [...] ]

Joseph Stiglitz: It’s Time to Get Radical on Inequality - YouTube
Nobel laureate Stiglitz, author of The Price of Inequality and The Great Divide, studies the forces driving inequality and what is at stake if it continues. In his view, bad economic thinking deserves part of the blame — fanciful ideas like trickle-down and the notion that economists should try to increase the size of the economic pie and let the politicians worry about distribution. On the contrary, Stiglitz sees distribution as a problem economists must confront. He warns that an economic system that doesn’t raise standards of living for most Americans is a failure. [...] monopoly rent = too big to fail/tbtf (bailout) == cost to society/economic damage == where was antitrust!? monopolies are less productive & costly eventually in the long-term. rent exploitation through lobby! WikiLeaks - Espionnage Élysée - Angela Merkel on Greece and Europe (actions speak louder than words).
Earlier reporting reveals that following talks last week in Berlin with Merkel, Hollande complained that nothing of substance was achieved; it was purely for show. Could We Make Even the Worst Jobs, Great Jobs? - YouTube
If you treat your workforce as a profit center, as opposed to a cost center, perhaps your company's bottom line will soar. Why? Because employees, treated really well, perform really well. Management professor Zeynep Ton examines how organizations can design and manage their operations in a way that satisfies employees, customers, and investors simultaneously. (Hint: Paying higher than the minimum wage is a great start toward better performance).

Headline Numbers: How do you measure inequality? - BBC News
Research from the Institute for Policy Studies found that in 2014, bonuses paid to Wall Street employees had been double the total annual pay earned by all Americans who worked full-time at the federal minimum wage. I crunched the numbers and it turned out that the same was true for the UK. [...] The Office for National Statistics (ONS) had figures out on Wednesday based on the definition that people were in poverty if their income was below 60% of the median level (to find the median income, line up all the people in the country in order of income and take the middle one). It found that almost a third of the UK population had experienced poverty in at least one of the years between 2010 and 2013, which is very high by European standards. The OECD sets out a summary of what has happened to examples of all three of these measures. Across its 34 member countries, the Gini Coefficient rose gradually from 1996, fell slightly for the financial crisis and then resumed its upward path.

Facebook wants to narrow the inequality gap between its technical and non-technical workers | PandoDaily
Facebook is advocating for higher wages, paid time off, and other benefits for many of the non-technical workers it hires through independent contractors. [...] This news follows increasing unrest about how tech companies, which are known for offering many of their employees ridiculous benefits and high pay, treat the workers who don’t write a line of code but still help the business run. [...] Yet the Journal notes that these benefits pale in comparison to those offered to the company’s technical workers, who receive better pay, more vacation time, and $4,000 in “baby cash” on top of their paid parental leave. The gap might be shrinking, but it’s still more like the Grand Canyon than an itty-bitty schism. [ aka a gesture and PR ]

<< Werkvertraege und Leiharbeit (Lohnkostensenkung in GER) // are they really ahead of the cure or are they just coping with the change. meaning not willing to disrupt itself? to risk entering new industries what will take 10 years to mature (3D Printing (new materials), Software, Robotics, Automation, stakes in Share Economy and on-demand economy (Lyft, Uber, Hailo, BlaBlaCar, Postmates, FernReisebusunternehmen). ... which would actually show Leadership.
