No one can save the Tories | British politics | For Europe, Against the EU | Politics | spiked
The talk of May doing a Michael Howard, the nadir of the Tories previous electoral irrelevance who allowed the space for the Cameroons to emerge, misses the point. PR man Cameron may have been a hollow technocrat, but at least he at least had a strategy: turning the Conservatives into New Labour. The Tories now have neither a play nor principle in mind. Everywhere you look you see a party bereft of vision. [...] The last few weeks of broadsheet tittle-tattle and political melodrama has only confirmed that the Tory Party has no idea what it stands for or who it represents. It’s a relic of the last century, a zombie party. Theresa May, the ‘dead woman walking’ in No10, is precisely the kind of leader it deserves. &! http://www.spiked-online.com/newsite/article/may-the-leader-the-technocrat-party-deserves/20392#.WdwbJ1uPJPU &! http://www.spiked-online.com/newsite/article/whats-the-point-of-the-tories/20384#.WdwbI1uPJPU

A Tory leadership race between two women is not a feminist revolution

Piketty: EU should welcome one million immigrants a year
"The European Union has the capacity to absorb a large flow of migrants, one million per year in terms of inflow net of outflow," he said.
"This is exactly what we had between 2000 and 2010 and this was working in the sense that unemployment was being reduced.
"The problem is - with the austerity policies and with the recession - now we are in a situation where it's very difficult in particular with southern Europe, with the terrible economic situation that we have created there in particular." [...] The population of the EU has only risen by 0.2% a year since 1995, he argues, compared to 1.2% for the world's population over the same period.
According to Eurostat, the official statistical arm of the European Commission, a total of 3.4 million people came to the EU during 2013. Some 2.8 million left, leaving a net immigration figure of around 600,000. [S]low growth [...] exacerbated not just by a lack of immigration but also by austerity policies aimed at reducing public expenditure. [EU in recession 2011 forward]

'Do not come to Europe', Donald Tusk warns economic migrants | World news | The Guardian
'Do not come to Europe', Donald Tusk warns economic migrants. After meeting with Greek PM in Athens, president of European council issues warning to would-be migrants [...] Last year the EU and Turkey signed a deal in which Europe offered to spend €3bn on helping some of the 2.5 million refugees in Turkey in exchange for help in reducing numbers travelling to Europe and reviving Turkey’s long-stalled EU membership talks. But Europe has expressed impatience with the continued high number of people making the perilous crossing over the Aegean Sea. Turkey has been unimpressed with the many weeks it took Europe to find the money, which has yet to translate into projects on the ground. [...] EU authorities in Brussels echo Greece’s calls for a European-wide approach, but have proved powerless to stop unilateral decisions by member states. Since September 2015, eight countries in Europe’s passport-free Schengen zone have reintroduced border controls.

Ex-health secretary Andrew Lansley to advise firms on healthcare reforms | Politics | The Guardian
Andrew Lansley, the architect of the coalition government’s efforts to privatise parts of the NHS, has taken a job advising corporate clients on healthcare reforms despite David Cameron’s pledge to close the “revolving door” between Whitehall and the private sector. The management consultants Bain & Company took on Lord Lansley in August. The newly ennobled Conservative peer also plans to become an active associate of a “strategic communications consultancy” set up by his wife and will advise on health and social care. His appointments will raise eyebrows because Lansley, who was health secretary for two years until 2012, is still blamed by many in the health service for the Health and Social Care Act, which critics said increased the privatisation of the NHS.

Volkswagen US boss told about emission cheat in 2014 - BBC News
Michael Horn said he was told about a "possible emissions non-compliance" in the spring of 2014. The revelation was made in testimony due to be presented to a committee of the US House of Representatives investigating the scandal on Thursday . He said he was told after a study by West Virginia University was published. "I was informed that EPA [Environmental Protection Agency] regulations included various penalties for non-compliance with the emissions standards and that the agencies can conduct engineering tests which could include 'defeat device' testing or analysis," he said. "I was also informed that the company engineers would work with the agencies to resolve the issue." Mr Horn said in the written evidence it was not until 3 September this year that Volkswagen told US authorities about the "defeat device" in emissions software in diesel vehicles for the model years 2009 to 2015. [...] "Responsible parties will be identified and held accountable," Mr Horn said.

NHS to begin denying people hearing aids for first time | Society | The Guardian
[ From January 2015 - bit.ly/13RgSyy - NHS accused of ‘cruel’ rationing of hearing aids ] [ NHS services, yet another example, is being rationed. Because budget is blown on chronic diseases caused mainly by diet and sedentary lifestyle. NHS CEO did say prevention is not addressed properly of how big the lever actually is long-term! ] The NHS will start denying people with hearing problems access to hearing aids for the first time from Thursday in a controversial move that critics claim will worsen sufferers’ social isolation. The GP-led NHS clinical commissioning group in North Staffordshire is taking the unprecedented step of ceasing to provide free hearing aids to mainly elderly people in its area with mild hearing loss. It is also making it harder for those with moderate hearing loss to get access to hearing aids by introducing new eligibility criteria against which patients will be judged.

The soaring number of people with long-term medical conditions [chronic] is threatening to "overwhelm" the NHS [...] The challenges posed by patients with chronic medical conditions are so great that they represent the "healthcare equivalent to climate change" and must force the NHS to undertake a major rethink of how it cares for such patients, Dr Martin McShane says in an interview with the Guardian. Firm 'hides' university when recruits apply - BBC News
There will be a "university-blind" approach to selection, so that the name of the university attended will not be known. The aim is to find students with "potential" and to prevent the recruitment process producing an intake from a narrow range of universities and social backgrounds. "Improving social mobility is one of the UK's biggest challenges," said David Sproul, senior partner and chief executive of Deloitte UK. But Mr Sproul said there was also a "business imperative", as firms needed "to hire people who think and innovate differently, come from a variety of backgrounds and bring a range of perspectives". The move by Deloitte is the latest in a wave of changes by graduate recruiters wanting to look beyond academic results.

VW lost the plot. But that’s the danger when business lacks social moorings | Will Hutton | Comment is free | The Guardian
VW’s existential crisis has revealed the weaknesses inherent in western economies. Change must now happen [...] Despite a vast R and D budget, VW is far from a leader in the electrical car or hybrid market. Mr Winterkorn’s bonuses were based on his capacity to deliver production, jobs and profits: environmental sustainability or engaging with wider stakeholders did not get a look-in. [...] Capitalism, in short, may have boundless creative and innovative energy – but it also has boundless ways to go wrong. Intriguingly, recent work by a group of researchers at Harvard and the London Business School compared 90 American companies that took sustainability seriously with 90 who did not. Over 18 years the 90 committed to sustainability delivered annual financial returns 4.8% higher than the other 90.

What is Angela Ahrendts doing at Apple? - Fortune
“She motivates people. She inspires people. And she is the sort of person who wants to see things succeed as a team. It’s a rare quality.” [...] Ahrendts believes the key to the company’s future is not just marvelous products, but also engaging and energizing its nearly 100,000 employees, 60% of whom now work in retail division. “If you’re going to employ people anyway,” she says, “why not make them the differentiator? They’re not a commodity.” Now that there are 459 Apple stores in 15 countries, many people have their first Apple experience inside a store—a first impression that could forever tarnish the brand if it’s not good. “Burberry was about building a relationship,” she says. “But it was always about selling an amazing product that you would have forever. Apple is just a deeper relationship with a much broader constituency. Because it’s everybody.” // apple positioned itself just above everyone else it competes w [having a margin!], but not too far up to be douchy, off-setting

The Myth of Valley DoucheBaggery - John Battelle's Search Blog
But I think our industry culture is moving far faster than the writers at Silicon Valley might wish to believe. I think we’re seeing the rise of a new culture, one that rejects arrogance and the founder worship which breeds it. Inevitable outliers aside, the Valley and technology culture I experience every day in my work at NewCo is one of passion, sweat, earnestness, and good intentions. Sure, we all fuck up. And sure, the press (especially, not surprisingly, the press in New York) has a field day when someone does. But by and large, the teams making companies like Slack, LiveRamp, Medium, Earnest, MetroMile, Lyft, Okta, Pinterest, and hundreds more are damn fine people, and they are dedicating their lives to making something that creates positive change – a product or service that makes the world a better place (even if it’s in a small way). What I Learned This Week About Tim Cook’s Apple | Re/code
[ always along the motto: extension of you, part of you. The new Apple under Jobs was NOT an overnight success! It build on its differentiation, strong base, a cult, a Tribe, 1000 True Fans, and build on it stride by stride. Most capitalistic company out of SV, no counter-culture out of largest corp on world. & can pull of iAd coup because it has monopsony! & Duopoly w Android. ] Many people love Apple, others despise it. But, even without Jobs, it cannot be ignored. There simply is no other company that combines such a high-quality hardware line with such well-regarded software platforms. A faltering Samsung has the former, but not the latter. A strong and admirable Google has the latter, but not the former. If you didn’t believe that before, this week’s event made it crystal clear, with once-bitter rivals like Microsoft and Adobe showing up onstage to boast about how well their products worked with new Apple hardware and software. Major Executive Shake-Up at Yahoo Media Unit Amid Company-Wide Talent Turmoil (Update) | Re/code
There have been a lot of changes in the media unit too, including some layoffs and other adjustments. Under Savitt and with the support of Mayer, Yahoo has sought to create a content destination site, with elaborate online magazines and big-name hires like Katie Couric and David Pogue. Still, the lack of traction in reviving its core business, especially advertising, has begun to take its toll. And, no surprise, there are many more as other Silicon Valley companies — such as Twitter, Facebook and others — have grabbed the cream of the crop at Yahoo of late, as its core business has continued to suffer. I have spent the last several weeks compiling a long list of the leavings, so more to come.

Bumper payouts for housebuilding executives as market booms | Business | The Guardian
Two of Britain’s largest housebuilders, Berkeley Group and Persimmon, could hand out about £1bn to their top executives and managers in pay and bonuses over the next six years, boosted by strong UK house prices and government-subsidies for home-buyers. Five years, building a culture, and handing it off. - Laughing Meme
Nothing we know [ about X ] should be assumed to be true. // Technology is the product of the culture that builds it. // If you want to build for the long term, the only guarantee is change. Invest in your people and your ability to ask questions, not your current answers. Your current answers are wrong, or they will be soon. // Software development should be thought of as a cycle of continual learning and improvement rather a progression from start to finish, or a search for correctness. If you aren’t shipping, you aren’t learning. If it slows down shipping, it probably isn’t worth it. Maturity is knowing when to make the trade off and when not to. // You build a culture of learning by optimizing globally not locally. Your improvement, over time, as a team, with shared tools, practices and beliefs is more important than individual pockets of brilliance. And more satisfying. Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer's minimal maternity leave plan prompts dismay | Technology | The Guardian
When she had her son in September 2012, she took two weeks of paid maternity leave, a fraction of what the company allowed. Eight months later and three months after banning telecommuting, Mayer announced more generous maternity benefits at Yahoo. The company doubled maternity leave and now offers new mothers 16 weeks of paid time off. Fathers are offered eight weeks of paid paternity leave. Both parents can take eight weeks in the case of adoption, fostering or surrogacy. [...] There is speculation as to whether another famous technology chief – Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook – will take his company allowance of paternity leave. [...] “Mayer’s announcement is disappointing,” said Anne Weisberg, senior vice-president of the Families and Work Institute in New York. “She’s a role model and I think she should take whatever Yahoo’s parental leave is – the mark of a great leader is that they have a strong team and don’t need to be there all the time themselves. &! vs bit.ly/1VGGunZ

[ AMAZON's culture ] by USA TODAY Tech (podcast)
Amazon, Silicon Valley, Unicorns and Decacorns - go go go even for broke. making things happen. winning the category. // vs Google and Facebook are those that won sort of automatically and had not that much internal and external pressure growing up. had not to fight surviving dot.com crash. Facebook sort of became a self-runner despite of its many missteps. Amazon had to fight all the way, and still has to fight because now it faces antitrust on both sides of the Atlantic. That creates, inadvertently, a specific culture that has been cited by personal examples in the NYT piece.

I think that bodes well for those companies and the tech industry in general. // learned from past mistakes, putting COO, finance guys, pure MBA managers, or else in the CEO role of Tech Companies *Yahoo! anybody? after all in a new world that is being build, its about the product and thus the user (experience) [UI UX product strategy, and thus companies strategy alignment]. And not about purely sales and marketing (stuffing products down the throat of companies that the end users hate (and the manage hates as well because staff are complaining and lost productivity), but the procurement manager (or CIO) got a great deal on and got a raise). << that was so 90's and the first decade of the 2000's.

The office after Amazon: is the workplace becoming a jungle? | Technology | The Guardian
Certain companies operating in certain fields with certain competition, can and inadvertently develop certain cultures. That some describe as ruthless competitive externally and internally. You could even say that Reed Hastings culture document transpires that this is a workplace where it is expected of you, to contribute and solve problems for our customers (competitive and toppling the established players). PayPal too. And Jeff talks about being obsessive about the customer and inventing in the name of the customer (build a monopsony/monopoly). Gates made MSFT internally competitive (build a monopoly), working long hours, and as they were externally. Very different to FB and Google and their business & product position. // The recent claims about Amazon’s aggressive corporate culture were a cause of consternation to many – but plenty of others couldn't see what the problem was. So is a gentler, more relaxed office culture any better for employees? And is it even what they want?

Do You Trust Larry Page? - Stratechery by Ben Thompson
Given the fact that Alphabet née Google is the second most valuable enterprise in the world, it’s striking to consider Larry Page’s 2014 assessment of the company he co-founded with Sergey Brin: I think we’ve not succeeded as much as we’d like. [...] Even Google’s famously far-reaching mission statement, to “organise the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful”, is not big enough for what he now has in mind. The aim: to use the money that is spouting from its search advertising business to stake out positions in boom industries of the future, from biotech to robotics. [...] Googles non-social approach to advertising vs Facebook and everyone else ] [ ad world begins finally to shift away from TV & other legacy forms & FB/Google are main beneficiaries coming years of changing ad spend ] [ Page/Brin want 2 lead the org 2 a new frontier. A new Google Search. &they think they a near it, ie self-driving car, that they think the timing is right NOW ]

Atari founder Nolan Bushnell on why life is 'a game' - BBC News
After his breakout success in the late 1970s and early 1980s, Mr Bushnell made several missteps that eventually led to some entrepreneurial failures and financial ruin. "When I was 35, I was insufferable. I thought I could do no wrong and I got really sloppy," [...] He chalks the creation of Atari up to a bit of good luck: "I was probably the only electrical engineer that understood television, and understood the coin-operated game business [from the amusement park] in 1969," he says. [...] Mr Bushnell also emphasises that the popularity of Atari's games was primarily due to his ability to find and hire talented, creative workers, including one you may have heard of - Steve Jobs. "I've always valued passionate employees over anything else, [...] But Mr Jobs, like a lot of his earlier employees, had passion and as a result, "was an extremely hard worker". // talks about internal leadership - youtu.be/fxIN9J3Vcv4

Russia will fork Sailfish OS to shut out pesky Western spooks
Paranoia over NSA tampering spurs de-Westernisation drive // well only the Paranoid survive. [...] Russia’s Minister of Communications and Mass Media, Nikolai Nikiforov, has taken part in talks to form a consortium that will aid Russia in developing a custom mobile OS, reportedly a forked version of Jolla’s Sailfish OS, to lessen its dependence on Western technology. Nikiforov held a working meeting last week with the leadership of Hong Kong-based Sailfish Holdings, developer of the quietly admired Sailfish OS. Alongside other participants, the parties involved discussed the use of open-source software in the public and private sectors, taking into account technical, economic and political factors, the latter of which is expected to include United States’ interference with exported technologies.

Go tell the boss: let me work less and I’ll produce more | Life and style | The Guardian
The five-day work week is an artificial and outmoded idea. A shorter working week can boost efficiency and an employee’s happiness [...] The latest trend might have more going for it, though: more tech businesses are experimenting with four-day weeks. As Ryan Carson, co-founder of the education startup Treehouse, put it: “You get all day Friday off, instead of pretending like you’re working when you’re not.” [...] The most important reason to work fewer days, of course, is that it’s good for families, friendship, hobbies and the human spirit. But the most interesting implication of the current experiments, backed by some academic research, is that it appears to be good for productivity and work quality, too. Partly that’s because desk-based “knowledge work” relies on plenty of brain rest as well as exertion.
