What has the Women’s March accomplished, beyond mere visibility? | Jessa Crispin | Opinion | The Guardian
Women’s March // Advertisement

Since its inception, Women’s March has faced criticism by many within the feminist community. The March and its participants, we heard from many critics, marginalized Native women, disabled women, women of color, trans women and Jewish women to present a very safe, white, middle of the road protest. [...] Others called the organization out for not having any real agenda, and for focusing solely on what it was against – the Trump administration and Republican control of Congress – and not what it was for. This is a common problem for organizations that begin as protest movements.

Thunderer: Help transgender children by ending old lies and fears | Scotland | The Times & The Sunday Times
Despite what you may have heard, children cannot be turned transgender. To suggest they can be bamboozled into it — or that anyone would want to do that — is a straightforward malicious lie. From the age of four until I was 18, everyone I knew told me I couldn’t be a girl. And yet here I am ten years on, living as a woman.

He said: “I’ve never encountered homophobia in casting from the studios or networks – not once, not ever. Police Scotland chief says hate crime 'absolute priority' - BBC News
Scotland's top police officer has said tackling hate crime is an "absolute priority" for his force. Speaking at the start of Hate Crime Awareness Week, Phil Gormley said he was determined to eradicate all forms of hatred in Scotland. A new network of LGBTI liaison officers has been established in a bid to improve the reporting of hate crimes.
About 90 officers have been trained to work with the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex community. The chief constable's comments come after a recent report called for a stronger approach to tackling hate crime in Scotland. It found the issue was far worse than official figures suggested. [...] Mr Gormley called on all victims of hate crime to report every incident to police.

No one would listen to Stephen Fry if he was poor
Now he expects us to join him in condemning people who have been affected by events they could not possibly control.

And there are many of them. A recent study found that up to 80% of abused people had at least one psychiatric disorder by their 21st birthday: depression, anxiety, thoughts of suicide. Schoolyard bullying can be just as destructive, with one study arguing that bullying carried out by other children is five times more likely than neglect or abuse at home to cause anxiety.

Just as the body’s immune system is still forming in childhood, so too is the brain’s stress response. The effects of childhood trauma cannot be overstated: abuse, sexual abuse in particular, is devastating. Children need love, and they need to feel safe. Why Do Men Kill Trans Women? Gender Theorist Judith Butler Explains
Our full investigation into the killing of 23 transgender women in 2015 can be read here. What follows is Broadly's interview with Butler. It has been edited and condensed. [...] But I think we also have to take note of the limits of media attention. We have seen, for instance, how the election of the nation's first black president coincided with a worsening economic situation for black people, so media attention is hardly enough to secure concrete equality. The situation of trans people of color is more precarious as a result. It is always possible to be an object of public fascination or a visual icon of trans life that cisgendered people want to consume visually at the same time that the legal and economic situation for trans people remains bad, or worsens. //&! http://www.vocativ.com/304799/more-than-2000-trans-people-murdered-worldwide-since-2008/ - Most transgender people killed between 2008 and 2015 were sex workers, according to a report

The Truth About Caitlyn Jenner’s Politics (time.com)
After all, many Americans still see transgender people as strange or illegitimate. So it wouldn’t surprise me if interest in this story is partly driven by a desire to see the world’s most famous transgender person being taken down by her own community. Caitlyn Jenner has positioned herself as a representative or “ambassador” of trans communities, so I can understand why trans people object or take issue when her views fail to accurately reflect or support those communities. But when people who are unconcerned with transgender rights themselves start piling on, quite frankly, I am suspicious.

Gucci Casts First Transgender Model, Transparent Star Hari Nef
I think the most important part here is ... being stealth vs being out: IMG had met with transgender models in the past but passed on signing them when it became apparent that they were not interested in doing jobs that brought attention to their gender identities. They wanted to be seen as models, not transgender models. Nef did not share their feelings. "Give me all those jobs," she told Bart. "I want to work." And thus, the realisation that being trans still matters to the media and the public at large. Meaning it is still a big deal. A deal big enough that IMG doesn't sign trans models that want to stay stealth, because then they would compete with all the other women in the women's pool ... nothing special about that. // via https://redd.it/41vfr5

France to overhaul secularism teaching to help stop radicalisation | World news | The Guardian
The French principle of secularism has been twisted by politicians and so often wrongly used to attack Islam that schoolchildren have been left baffled, the French education minister has warned. Najat Vallaud-Belkacem told the Guardian that after last year’s devastating jihadi attacks in Paris, France was overhauling the teaching of secularism and civic values as part of the country’s drive against terrorism and radicalisation. “We have to reappropriate the concept of laïcité [secularism] so we can explain to our young pupils that whatever their faith, they belong to this idea and they’re not excluded. Secularism is not something against them; it protects them,” she said.

Tuesday's defeat of HERO highlights several conclusions that the LGBT movement needs to take to heart for the next decade or so. Foremost is that we will not win transgender issues directly at the ballot box, or in the gerrymandered republican legislatures which dominate the political landscape. [...] When opponents frame legal protections for transgender people as a choice between a group strangers (who are suspected of being perverts anyway) and the safety your wives and daughters, transgender people will lose every time. So far, anti-LGBT forces have been far more successful at pushing their narrative. I don't foresee this changing anytime soon. [...] Convincing large numbers of people driven by fear and religious beliefs simply will not happen. &! bit.ly/1MgrDKK &! https://redd.it/3rxwmd &! slate.me/1Op7eck

Trans activist Paris Lees walks out of BBC Newsnight recording - Gay Star News
I’m not prepared to enter into a fabricated debate about trans people’s right to exist/express themselves. ‘There is no “debate”. Some people are trans – I’d have been very happy to go on & talk about the simple issue of human rights for trans people.’ [...] The community was already concerned after anti-trans academic Sheila Jeffreys was asked to appear on BBC Radio 4 show Woman’s Hour on 7 August to discuss her new book. In the segment, she explained without challenge how trans people ‘hurt people and society’. //&! on.fb.me/1N0IVex - Germaine Greer //&! bit.ly/1MnwKb6 - nobody needs a gender theory degree title to decide to wear make-up and dresses. //&! Coming out day: Warum ein Coming out wichtig ist - Queer - bento

Campaign launched highlighting economic case for pro-LGBT rights | World news | The Guardian
Fourteen global businesses, including Google and Royal Bank of Scotland, have launched a campaign to put forward the economic case for ending discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual & transgender individuals. Launched at the Clinton Global Initiative annual meeting in New York, the Open for Business campaign published research showing economies, companies and individuals perform better in societies that support LGBT employees. The report by Open for Business spells out that nearly 80 countries criminalise consensual, adult same-sex activity, or use other laws to marginalise and persecute LGBT individuals.

LGBT acceptance should start at work | Guardian Careers | The Guardian
Our world is full of smart and capable LGBT people who are just a step away from living a successful and fulfilling life. To do that they first need acceptance from society and we believe this starts from the professional sector. I wish one day parents will not have to worry about their children’s future because of their sexuality. I also wish that one day every single LGBT individual will experience the same treatment as heterosexuals do.

The lady's not for turning: cinematic portrayals of lesbians need to get real | Film | The Guardian
predatory trope ( a significant or recurrent theme) // "The age difference is stark, but beyond this, the narrative of lesbian conversion is there in all its problematic glory, throwing up questions about sexual identity and coercion. Not only by using an uncomfortable stereotype about predatory lesbians, but also by treating sexual identity as if it were a taste in food: here, try the asparagus; if you eat it enough you might like it. [...] Indeed, the conversion trope itself is probably a response to the difficulty in depicting real lesbian relationships – they have to be couched in stereotypical terms for mainstream audiences to connect with. [...] The recurrence of the cliche is one that will hopefully disappear as being public about your queer identity becomes easier, and we begin to recognise that lesbian women can have boring, conventional love stories just like anyone else."

The drugs that protect people who have unprotected sex - BBC News
HIV infection rates are on the rise, particularly among gay men. But could a new type of drug treatment - PrEP - be given to people so they avoid catching the disease, asks Mobeen Azhar. [...] It's impossible to know how many men have become infected with HIV while using chems, but condom-less sex is normal for many men on the chem scene. In a study published by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, a third of men surveyed described incidents of unintended unprotected sex while under the influence of chemsex drugs.
