The end of Atlanticism: has Trump killed the ideology that won the cold war? | News | The Guardian
"special relationship" - The foreign policy establishment has been lamenting its death for half a century. But Atlanticism has long been a convenient myth // Atlanticism has never had a very stable meaning. For one thing, the US and Europe have not always considered each other natural political partners. For most of American history, there hasn’t even been a unified “Europe” to partner with. [...] Advertisement

In 1973, Henry Kissinger, himself a transatlantic refugee, launched a “Year of Europe” tour to try to save the relationship in the name of containment, preventing the further growth of the Soviet Union. Speaking as Nixon’s national security adviser, he asked whether the Atlantic community could thrive as the memory of the second world war began to fade. As the “rigid divisions of the past two decades diminish, new assertions of national identity and national rivalry emerge”. He argued that Americans should continue to support European unity. “If we permit the Atlantic partnership to atrophy … we shall miss our historic opportunity for even greater achievement.”

How Europe's far right fell in love with Australia's immigration policy | World news | The Guardian
Espersen has studied Australia’s Pacific solution in detail, so I pushed him: where would your Nauru be? “Morocco is a very good example of a country that would possibly do it for an amount of money,” he claims. And Danish staff could run the camps. “We would run the things ourselves and pay the Moroccan authority a fee. We would also make it possible for their local grocers or butchers to come and deliver goods … There will be excellent service, I can assure you.” In the Danish right’s offshore paradise, there would be education, too. Nobody will be “living in ratholes”, he promises. [...] As with Australia and its offshore centres, what happens in Libya stays in Libya while Europe washes its hands of responsibility. If the flow of migrants surges again during the next war or climate crisis, the clamour for offshoring will only grow louder. And if the Australian model is adopted more fully in Europe, then there will be no hope for legitimate refugees to claim asylum through legal channels, and more of them will seek illegal paths to Europe.

London attack: Theresa May says enough is enough after seven die - BBC News
https://twitter.com/iyad_elbaghdadi/status/871490728396038145 & https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/jun/04/theresa-may-british-values-muslims-terror-threat - Speaking in Downing Street after a meeting of the government's emergency Cobra committee, the prime minister said the country "cannot and must not pretend that things can continue as they are".
"We believe we are experiencing a new trend in the threat we face as terrorism breeds terrorism," she said.
Mrs May said the UK's counter-terrorism strategy would be reviewed, as she promised to step up efforts to combat Islamist ideology and work with other countries to prevent the internet being a "safe space" for terrorists.
She said there was "too much tolerance of extremism in our country" and while it would involve "some difficult and embarrassing conversations", that must change. [...] Some analysts see this as a last desperate bid by IS to its supporters, following multiple setbacks in the Middle East where its self-proclaimed caliphate is shrinking fast. However, the ideology of IS is likely to survive those defeats and will continue to fuel terrorist attacks around the world. [...] With three attacks in close proximity, terrorism against soft targets is beginning to feel, to some people, like the new normal.
The brutal reality is that this kind of threat is absolutely typical of what jihadists sought to achieve in all their attacks across Europe.

Blair prosecution opposed by attorney general, says paper - BBC News
Lawyers who want to pursue the prosecution based their argument on the findings of last year's Chilcot report, which concluded that the UK chose to carry out the 2003 invasion in Iraq "before the peaceful options for disarmament had been exhausted".
Imran Khan, one of the lawyers bringing the case, told the Guardian: "My client wants those responsible held to account and prosecuted using the full force of the law.
"He is baffled as to why it is that despite the Chilcot report making it very clear that the war was illegal, attempts are now being made to prevent those responsible from entering a court, let alone being prosecuted for what they did."

Torture victims in high court challenge to Home Office over detentions | Law | The Guardian
Seven victims of torture who have been locked up in immigration detention are at the high court, challenging as unlawful a government policy that allows some torture survivors to be imprisoned.

The seven, who include victims of trafficking, a man kidnapped by the Taliban, and two men tortured because of their sexuality, say the government should no longer be able to routinely incarcerate people who have experienced persecution. The charity Medical Justice, which works to improve the health of immigration detainees, is also part of the judicial review challenge.

Trump signs new travel ban directive - BBC News
Donald Trump has, at last, unveiled his new immigration order, and it looks like government lawyers - and not just White House political operatives like Steve Bannon and Stephen Miller - have had their input.
Gone are the most controversial measures of the old order, such as preference for Christian refugees and the suspension of existing visas and green cards.
The details of the action's implementation are outlined with greater clarity this time, with more than a week before the new rules kick in.

Britain is one of worst places in western Europe for asylum seekers | UK news | The Guardian
Britain is one of the worst destinations for people seeking asylum in western Europe, according to a Guardian analysis of policies, data and reports of the conditions faced by the record recent influx of new arrivals.

At the start of a year-long project with three other newspapers on Europe’s refugee crisis, the Guardian has analysed the experience of refugees and asylum seekers in the European Union’s big five nations – the UK, Germany, France, Spain and Italy – and found the conditions in Britain do not compare well.
Only Italy, on the frontline of hundreds of thousands of people crossing the Mediterranean, fares worse. &! https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2017/mar/01/how-britain-hard-stance-refugees-reshaping-european-policy

Steve Bannon: 'We're going to war in the South China Sea ... no doubt' | US news | The Guardian
The United States and China will fight a war within the next 10 years over islands in the South China Sea, and “there’s no doubt about that”. At the same time, the US will be in another “major” war in the Middle East.

We have entered a new era of conflict, warns new book
In his new book, Irregular War (IB Tauris) , he reflects on Isis, al-Qaida, Boko Haram, Al Shabab, and the Taliban - all separate manifestations, he says, of a new non-state dynamic driving international conflict through asymmetric and hybrid warfare. But their significance is more fundamental. They are part of what Rogers calls “an historical shift towards revolts from the margins”. And such revolts are made more likely by “the widening global socio-economic divide and the onset of climate disruption”. [...] The causes of conflict are many and deep – economic, political, societal, environmental, demographic. [...] “the increasing marginalisation of the majority of the world’s people caused by the workings of the neo-liberal system of international economic activity” which concentrates most of the fruits of economic growth in the hands of a transglobal elite of some 1.5bn people.

Admiral Lord West: Iraq invasion planned before Tony Blair told public (From Herald Scotland)
The decision to invade Iraq was made before Tony Blair publicly announced it "but they were looking for a reason" to do it, the head of the Royal Navy at the time has said.

Admiral Lord West, who was first sea lord when the war began in March 2003, said he was told by "some b*****d" to ready his forces in preparation for the conflict.

Lord West said: "I think there had been a decision that we were going to invade Iraq, that that was going to happen, but they were looking for a reason to actually do it."

It's Time To Stop Apologizing For Tina Fey - BuzzFeed News
[ more entertainment, don't make people think, don't try to make them think ... in cinema people uhhhmmmming ] But good books do not always make good movies — especially since the transformation from book to screen, at least in Hollywood’s hands, generally subtracts instead of adds nuance. [...] The most successful films are documentaries, which don’t face the inherent problem of casting actors, and white actors in particular, to play “bad guys” of different races, and high farces: films like Dr. Strangelove, M*A*S*H, and In the Loop that expand and eviscerate the inherent, if hidden, ridiculousness of modern war. [...] [ film has only ] cheap tricks, not the lacerating humor of effective farce. [...] women’s place in society, and sexual desirability as an alternately empowering and infantilizing experience. [...] The film dodges that idea, however, in favor of pitting Robbie’s character — who was created specifically for the purposes of the film — as Fey’s “competition.”

Migrants break down Macedonia fence on Greek border - BBC News

[...] [ From Commentary: ] But part of the EU's problem is that events on the ground are moving faster than the policies are being implemented. [ Defining moment of Europe. History. And Europe is failing the world. The people of Europe, are failing the world. ] [...] Individual countries like Sweden, Denmark and Belgium have broken ranks and imposed their own border checks. Others have failed to take in refugees. Angela Merkel pointed her finger squarely at Austria, saying its decision to accept just 80 refugees a day had led to today's problems in Greece. Europe's leaders have a chance to restore some unity at another crisis summit in a week's time. But it may be events on Greece's borders that dictate what happens.

Syria refugee crisis: six charts that show how Europe is struggling to respond | World news | The Guardian
Of the 1.2 million asylum applications filed, 356,805 were from Syrian applicants. The number of first-time applicants has grown hugely in the past five years. The increase in the number of people seeking asylum in Europe has been driven primarily by applications from Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq. [...] In Germany, one of the few EU countries to have reported full-year figures for 2015, there were almost 442,000 first-time asylum applications in 2015 alone: over a third of these by Syrians. Going through paperwork takes time, though; the country registered 428,468 Syrian arrivals last year. As a proportion of population, the most applications have been received in Hungary (649 applications per 100,000 population), Sweden (528 per 100,000 population) and Austria (where there were 273 applications per 100,000 population up to the end of November). //&! bit.ly/1o5FdLQ // Cameron Pays Up to keep them away and voters happy - bit.ly/1R3rJf5 &! bit.ly/1Kr9kqZ

Yemen conflict: Governor of Aden killed in Islamic State attack - BBC News
Islamic State militants say they are responsible for a blast that killed the governor of Yemen's port city of Aden. Jaafar Mohammed Saad and several aides died when their convoy was hit. IS says it detonated a car laden with explosives as he drove by. The group has established a presence in Yemen since its civil war broke out. It is opposed to the government and Iranian-backed Houthi rebels who have seized much of the country, including the capital Sanaa. Earlier this year, Aden was recaptured by government troops backed by a Saudi-led coalition.

Die Syrien-Falle | Dokumentation von Hubert Seipel - YouTube
[ IRAQ AND AFGHANISTAN will be viewed as foreplay, child's play, skirmish. This type of civil war wil last at least another 10 years (said GER military intel chief) ... maybe ... some say military solution impossible, says Kofi Annan ] Interview w Assad. - 2012/2013 - Turkey wants protection from Assads Scud missiles. 1 year before the exorbitant rise of ISIS mid 2014 into 2015. Russia likes to keep Addad regieme in Syria, now fighting ISIS and Free Syrian Army aka the rebel group/coalition ( bit.ly/1jGhVJx ) to help Assad. Turkey wants to get rid of Assad. UN resolution unlikely as Russia will veto everything west (no future for Assad) proposes. // https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_armed_groups_in_the_Syrian_Civil_War // that doesn't include Iraq forces; PKK, Pershmerga, Iraq Army, [yazidi, christians) - vs ISIS. //& Add Egypt and Lybia still unstable and no democracy since the Arab Spring. // Even Iran joins Russia propaganda that Turkey supports ISIS; Propaganda War.

UN resolution on IS 'extraordinary step' - BBC News
However, even if peace can be made between government and opposition in Syria, the meeting was united in its determination to carry on the fight against so-called Islamic State (IS) in Syria until its conclusion. The following week the UN Security Council confirmed the IS actions in Syria constituted "a global and unprecedented threat to international peace and security". Indeed, the Council called upon member states which have the capacity to do so to take "all necessary measures" to redouble and co-ordinate their efforts to eradicate the safe haven established by IS in significant parts of Iraq and Syria.

Terror: Wer sind "die", wer sind "wir"? - Kommentar - SPIEGEL ONLINE
