Neoliberalism has conned us into fighting climate change as individuals | Martin Lukacs | Environment | The Guardian
Neoliberalism has taken this internalized self-blame and turbocharged it. It tells you that you should not merely feel guilt and shame if you can’t secure a good job, are deep in debt, and are too stressed or overworked for time with friends. You are now also responsible for bearing the burden of potential ecological collapse.

The Great Unraveling Looms - Blame The 'Austrians'? | Zero Hedge
Well, well: who would have believed it. First the Bank for International Settlements comes out with a paper that links credit booms to the boom-bust business cycle, then Britain's Adam Smith Institute publishes a paper by Anthony Evans that recommends the Bank of England should ditch its powers over monetary policy and move towards free banking. [...] The BIS paper will be the more influential of the two in policy circles, and this is not the first time the BIS has questioned the macroeconomic assumptions behind the actions of the major central banks. [...] Targeting nominal GDP is not a perfect answer.

Donald Trump and Isis both benefit from a powerful fuel: our fear | Arie W Kruglanski | Opinion | The Guardian
The Republican presidential frontrunner and Islamic State both know how to exploit the fear and uncertainty so prevalent today and skillfully cultivate it [...] All these factors jolt people out of their comfort zones and foster existential anxieties that spawn yearnings for order and predictability. They privilege simplistic concepts that lack nuance and lend significant edge to leaders who talk tough and offer what psychologists call “closure”.

How schizophrenia changed the whole course of my life - BBC News
[ Cinderella Service ] The medications helped almost straight away but what I really wanted to do was talk to somebody in therapy sessions. At the time there was a lack of funding for this type of treatment, something which continues to be a problem for people with mental illnesses today. With the medication, I began to make little steps towards recovery. I started talking a bit, and being able to wash and take basic care of myself. Anybody who says that a mental illness isn't disabling is wrong, it affected my whole body. Unfortunately, the medication took a toll on my physical health and by the end of the following year I had gained around ten stone (63.5kg) in weight due to the side effects. [...] It has taken me 20 years to get this far in recovery, and I do still have setbacks. [...] If we can challenge the stigma, get proper investment in mental health services, [...] then people will not be left as long as I was before they are able to make their own steps toward recovery.

Rezension ǀ Was wäre ein selbstbestimmtes Leben?
The blame for distorting our view of women doesn’t lie just with advertisers | Lucy Mangan | Comment is free | The Guardian
If we objected strongly enough to warped views of female bodies, women would take our custom elsewhere. But we keep buying the brands that offend us [...] But the lack of change in this area suggests consumers are not changing their spending habits. And as most of the consumers of the brands and products these advertisers are selling to are women purporting to hate this kind of thing, we have a conundrum: why are we still doing this? Why aren’t we putting our money where our mouths are? And then, obviously, in further solidarity taking our mouths off for a pizza somewhere? [...] Asking, or compelling by legislation, advertisers to do this runs counter to almost every prevailing ideology and trend. It asks that moneymaking ventures act for the greater good instead of the bottom line. It asks government to chip away at a cornerstone of the free market. It conceptualises women as hapless victims of intangible forces.

Wandel der Trinkgewohnheiten - The European

distortion of asset allocation (mal-investment, investment in less productive areas for the economy) and risk appetite by pressure - hunt for yield. keeping zombie banks, consumers, and corporate alive by enabeling to rolling over their debt and even go further out on the time axis (long-term bonds/increase overall maturity of your debt - when it has to be repaid), incentive to buy on cheap credit, instead savings, delay of fiscal, economic, political reform by the given artificial time window (see lack of industrial, manufacturing, education, STEM policy/vision of UK) >> and false impression that austerity works great! // and as Richard Koo in one of his recent presentations (for his new book) said - Fed does not know how Taper will unfold, especially the problematic thing of long-dated bonds on their books and how to get them into the market.

China's stockmarket crash: A red flag | The Economist
via bit.ly/1HgJT6x // "Yet China’s intervention has screamed of panic. [...] If economic stability is not in peril, why then the panic? The most compelling explanation is politics. The government has staked much credibility and prestige on the stockmarket. When the going was still good, the official press was chock-a-block with articles about how the rally reflected the economic reforms that Xi Jinping, China’s top leader, was set to push. Li Keqiang, the premier, said repeatedly that he wanted equity markets to provide a bigger share of corporate financing—comments, from punters' perspective, not unlike waving a red cape in front of a bull. The sudden end to the rally is the first major dent in the public standing of the Xi-Li team. The botched attempts to stabilise the market only make them look weaker, giving succour to their critics." &! bbc.in/1eFbi8h - 1929 margin trading (borrowing to buy shares) & leverage products &! bloom.bg/1RjIgg9

On the Origin of Celebrity - Issue 5: Fame - Nautilus
"Why the obsession? Because we’re primates with vested interests in tracking social hierarchies and patterns of social affiliation. And celebrities provide our primate minds with stimulating gyrations of hierarchy and affiliation (who is sleeping with, feuding with, out-earning whom). [...] Why is rank so important to a baboon? For one thing, a stable dominance system is a huge social convenience—it insures bloody teeth and claws don’t reign each time a potential conflict arises." - via https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=8614040 &!&! http://nautil.us/issue/5/fame/homo-narrativus-and-the-trouble-with-fame "We think that fame is deserved. We are wrong. [...] These two traits—our compulsion to tell stories, and our bias towards the individual—conspire to ruin our intuitive understanding of fame.
[...] Advocatus Diaboli [...] Betriebsblindheit

BBC News - Rockefellers to switch investments to 'clean energy'
The Rockefeller Brothers Fund is joining a coalition of philanthropists pledging to rid themselves of more than $50 bn (£31 bn) in fossil fuel assets. The announcement will be made on Monday, a day before the UN climate change summit opens on Tuesday. Some 650 individuals and 180 institutions have joined the coalition. It is part of a growing global initiative called Global Divest-Invest, which began on university campuses several years ago, the New York Times reports. Pledges from pension funds, religious groups and big universities have reportedly doubled since the start of 2014.

Joe Gebbia - The Airbnb Story - YouTube
AirBnB is the ebay for places and experiences. Sharing is caring - you space. This kindness to open up you personal space to strangers ... magical moments can happen. Stories are written. Lives are changed. Still there is the 80/20 - there will always be bad eggs, say bad customers. And because national travel is vry affordable and people want to escape their walls on the weekend if they could afford and its users use it for niche items/services >> providing accommodation for events. Staying in someones place is very different than a hotel. a hotel is generic. every AirBnB is different. It is an experience. not only might you experience a new city, but you also experience someones life, how he or she or they live. Their view. Plus - this is the time of the Airbnb - experience services - because millennials favour experiences of commoditised consumer goods. and babyboomers want that cake too because of the youthification trend. only retrospective u see the pieces of the puzzle.

dctp.tv | Jennifer Jacquet research about shame
Jennifer Jacquet research about shame;
Book available 2013

- threat of shame increases peoples compliance with group expectations and norms
- shame comes from non-compliance with norms (society, groups, cultural norms) thus shame differs
- differs to individuals perception and their own values
- Shame in online world much more readily DONE without second thoughts
- online shaming much more acceptable than offline shaming
- guilt and shame differs, the latter involves exposure. guilt is an internal norm, shame is an external norm we respond to

- probability high once people are shamed/exposed, they tend to keep going. ie shaming USA in matter of carbon emissions not helpful. OR bashing bankers for behaviour ie LIBOR rigging scandal; central bankers can not readily shame them if they were complicit behind closed doors (anti-trust style)

- Shame depends also on source, who shamed who. Bill Clinton can not shame bankers, because he has his particular history about shame himself

How that polite fake laugh at a bad joke won't fool anyone | Mail Online
Their research has found people are ‘extremely good’ at distinguishing even the most realistic sounding fake giggles.
It found volunteers could almost always tell the difference between someone genuinely erupting into laughter and what the experts called ‘social laughter’.

“Incentives are the pillar of economics and represent everything I’m about,” List says. “If you understand the incentives people are operating under, you have a good first guess about what they’re going to be doing in certain circumstances and how changes in the environment and/or in their institutions will influence their behavior.”
