Marissa Mayer vs. “Kim Kardashian’s Ass”: What Sunk Yahoo’s Media Ambitions?
After a pricey talent spree, Yahoo News is reversing course—again. The other was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize, survived a gun shot to the face by the Taliban due to corruption in her country, and opened a school for Syrian refugees to combat the lack of education for youth around the world. What's upsetting is the media is only covering one of these stories as "breaking news." Share the post to spread real love and inspiration across the youth of the world. Hey, Advertisers. It's Serena Time! - Bloomberg View
In sports marketing, no one ever got fired for hiring a cute blond female athlete. It is the default choice. This can be, let’s just say it, racist. It’s definitely lookist. But it’s mainly conservative. In advertising, in television, in movies, the tendency is to look backward. Hiring only people who fit past models of success may often not work, but it comes with fewer consequences when it fails than trying something new does. To get all Keynesian about it, “Worldly wisdom teaches that it is better for reputation to fail conventionally than to succeed unconventionally.” [ risking looking like a fool ... vs playing it safe. incrementalism a to b - vs - dreamer/imagination ---- Logic will get you from a to b. Survivors | Bothsides of the Table
Failure. To most people it smells. People are afraid of it. It’s like cancer or divorce. When you have it you find you who your true friends are because they’re the ones who double down on helping, on being available, on listening, on understanding. Most people run from failure or disease because they’re hard to handle. Hard to know how to deal with. Awkward. But I am attracted to those who have had severe set-backs in life because it tells you something about the mettle of the person with whom you’re dealing. It reminds me of a famous quote in one of my favorite novel’s “Damage” by Josephine Hart “Damaged people are dangerous. They know they can survive.” [...] closed up shop at the very first hurdle. I wouldn’t work with him again. [...] Honor is what I’m looking for. How you failed is significantly more important than if you failed. Anybody who can't make money off iPads or TUAW should get out of the money-making business | iMore
But just because AOL can't make money off a niche blog, that doesn't mean the niche blog is dead: It just needs to evolve. We might be looking at a future where niche blogs stay far away from multi-million dollar corporations, and find different forms of money-making apart from blanket advertising. Ben Thompson wrote a fantastic piece this morning on blogging's bright future that follows those lines: No, it's not scale that is the problem, but rather reach. I am, of course, acutely aware that there is a tradeoff when it comes to the subscription business model: by making something scarce, and worth paying for, you are by definition limiting your number of readers. Stratechery, though, serves a niche, and niches are best served by making more from customers who really care than from milking pennies from everyone.

Apple knows that competition is catching up faster and faster in terms of design and functionality etc etc. They hired 2 fashion people already (burberry and from LVHM). And to differentiate the brand further (price/status symbol - above middle class) and to keep selling it's Apple Products ... including wearables (Watch & Headphone) they hired those key people or b(r)ought them into the mothership. Marketing Can No Longer Rely on the Funnel - Mark Bonchek , and Cara France - Harvard Business Review
We asked some of the leading marketers in the world — from companies like Google, Intuit, Sephora, SAP, Twitter, and Visa — to assess the relevance of the marketing funnel. What we found says as much about the future of business as it does about the future of marketing. [...] Consider all the members of the Nike+ running community who don’t own Nike products or the half million fans of Tesla’s Facebook page who don’t own a Tesla. Or consider companies where employees use their own devices or download their own software until IT purchases the enterprise version for the entire company. In today’s digital age, advocates aren’t necessarily customers. Marketers who think that advocacy comes after purchase are missing the new world of social influence. oftwominds-Charles Hugh Smith: The Changing Nature of Middle Class Work
The economy is changing in structural ways that affect not just the job market but the nature of work itself. If we ask, what is work?, the conventional answer is tasks that somebody will pay us to do. This is true, but it doesn't address why someone is willing to pay us. The answer is to create value. ... [ Skills, not Expertise. ] ...... As technology's ability to replace costly human labor moves from the factory floor to the service sector, the nature of middle class work is changing. [ IBM's company wide Pivot over +10 years from HW to Services and Software Company. With the accompanying downsizing. ] ... Jobs that can be learned in a few hours are prone to being replaced by machines. [...] The protected sectors beset by soaring costs (healthcare, higher education, major weaponry programs, finance, etc.) will undergo the creative destruction of technology-based productivity gains for the reason that they are already unaffordable, not just to households but to the nation.

Why I’m Bullish on the News - POLITICO Magazine
Go maximum mass or maximum specific. [...] News organizations are also going to have to mix and match revenue models. I see eight obvious ones: advertising, subscriptions, premium content, events, cross-media promotion, crowdfunding, micropayments and philanthropy. US Airways Just Tweeted Out One Of The Most Graphic Things You've Ever Seen A Brand Tweet
it is a symptom of what is wrong with current system. > working poor, squeezed middle class, ... giving out trinkets as rewards for their work after receiving a non-living wage. Can't argue that the employee who did that was a "redarard" and had no conscience over what the reaction would be to reply with an chubby porn pic as a reply to a 'had delay bc flight was overweight' complaint. can't deny bro had no humor. to find that pic in the first place was a concious effort on his place. meaning he wanted it to happen and was clearly ok with the consequences. what a way to leave a crappy building. period. must have been very frustrated. bc it's on his resume that employer and if anyone calls US Airways for references ... ouch. Maybe US airways does even contract that stuff out. who knows.

You can read Josh’s review of how Cover works here. Cover is being somewhat cryptic in discussing what it will be working on at Twitter. “Twitter, like Cover, believes in the incredible potential of Android,” they write. “They share our vision that smartphones can be a lot smarter — more useful and more contextual — and together we’re going to make that happen. We’ll be building upon a lot of what makes Cover great, and we’re thrilled to create something even better at Twitter.”

Calm Down. Facebook Is Not Screwing You. | Re/code
This means that your content needs to be: Timely and relevant: That’s what we all expect from our News Feed. Shareable: Something that you’d actually share with your friends and recommend to your own network. If you won’t share it, no one will. Genuine: Your content must be genuinely interesting and not be a blatant attempt to game Facebook. So get rid of those, “Click ‘Like’ to vote …” I currently sit on Facebook’s Creative Council, a group that represents the creative community’s interests to Facebook. And I continue to see up close how amazing publishing efforts by brands help them outperform their peers and stay in their fans’ News Feeds. Case in point: The always-on publishing efforts of Newcastle Brown Ale.

Punctuation: Internet and Twitter users sometimes replace the question mark with a period or with nothing at all.
Indeed, there are clues that people might abandon question marks for reasons other than carelessness or ignorance. A study published several years ago in the British Journal of Psychology noted a positive relationship between children's literacy and their use of "textisms" (such as "r" for "are") in text messages. A developmental psychologist at the University of Indiana found that college students, regardless of whether they frequently used textisms or not, were equally likely to spell words correctly in an email to a professor. In other words, people consider context when deciding whether to use non-standard orthography. Being able to use it where appropriate is a sign that you understand how language works.

At annual narrative conference, storytelling’s power remains as it changes | Poynter.
But at the heart of narrative and the conference “is a concept that informing the public involves telling true stories,” he said. “And stories don’t only involve a sequence of events, but they involve a storyteller.” [...] “Good stories are good stories,” he said, “and we can all learn important lessons in technique from them no matter in what medium they are told.” [...] Journalists now have to be flexible, she said, able to tell strong stories and open to how best those stories work. “When you’re paying attention to what the story is, it will tell you what the right form is,” she said. [...] Narrative endures, he wrote in an email to Poynter, but how it’s delivered has changed.

Warner Bros. Gets Ready to Bet on YouTube With a Machinima Investment | Re/code
Machinima’s long road for this round is partly a reflection of its own problems — several of the company’s top executives have left in the last year, it has had multiple layoff rounds, and is looking for a replacement for CEO and founder Allen DeBevoise — and may also be related to issues many video producers are having as they try to make money on YouTube. Even companies that garner lots of eyeballs on the world’s biggest video site — and Machinima says it generates billions of views a month — have had a hard time turning that into a profitable business, because ad rates are low and much of the money they do make goes back to YouTube.

Those YouTube Promo Plans Are A Lot More Common Than You Might Think
But it's something of a necessary evil, he continues. With copyright issues and the struggle to remain relevant amongst the sea of other YouTubers trying to get their Let's Plays noticed, a cushy bonus like a few extra bucks per thousand views could feel like a good deal. And so Boogie warns to take the videos you see with a grain of salt, because these kinds of deals are fairly widespread within the community. And despite many of these contracts necessitating a disclosure of the agreement in the descriptions of these videos, not every YouTuber is as open about the deals they make, Boogie says.

Build the Steak, not the Sizzle — The Entrepreneur’s Journey — Medium
You can market your ass off, but if your product sucks, you're dead. Your steak can sizzle and look crazy appetizing, but if it doesn’t taste any good, your customers aren’t coming back. In order to build a functional business that can take on a life of its own, your product just has to be real. You need to spend all of your time and energy on creating something that actually brings value to the people you're asking for money! I know it sounds obvious, but it’s something I can’t overstate. It's imperative.

Reddit Is Big, Growing, and (Maybe) Turning Ever-More Inward - Robinson Meyer - The Atlantic
via http://www.reddit.com/r/TheoryOfReddit/comments/1v4vik/reddit_is_big_growing_and_maybe_turning_evermore/ [...] This is an interesting article I found, and implies that reddit may be, rather than a "sharing site," more of "a kind of earnest Internet town hall." I personally like the idea, really. Whereas facebook is mindless "look at this!" reddit, for all of its flaws and circlejerks, does occasionally have really good discussion and debate that facebook and social media sites just, well, lack. I just thought that was interesting, I've never posted here before so hopefully this is enough elaboration and you find the article interesting. [....] Shareaholic’s statistics indicate a changing role for Reddit: The site is perhaps becoming more of an object of sustained attention, and less of a interesting-link clearinghouse. (Reddit darlings like image-sharing site Imgur, meanwhile, now boast their own communities—Imgur’s is now larger than Reddit.)

Staying Ahead of the Curve — The Entrepreneur’s Journey — Medium
RE: @garyvee @stunwin How do you stay ahead of the game? How do you strategize with your team? Any particular methods you use? [...] RE: Staying Ahead of the Curve Innovation isn’t a tactic. It’s a religion. It’s not a method, it’s a mindset. Everybody’s looking for tactics, but it’s more about religion. So the reason my team and I stay ahead is that we’re built to stay ahead. We value the ROI that comes from the time we spend researching and pondering and debating and playing. [...] We’re in the business of always trying to put ourselves out of business. [...] But when it call comes down to it, nothing trumps execution. When Vine came out, I spent many hours between 11pm and 2am playing and understanding. At the end of the day, those hours were taken out of leisure time, sleep, and preparing for projects. I knew that and I still allocated that time. On paper, that seems very counter-intuitive, but I understand that value, and if you want to stay ahead, you should, too.

BBC News - Is Hollywood's blockbuster model broken?
The irony is that Spielberg almost singlehandedly invented the blockbuster genre. When his film Jaws was released in 1975, Hollywood realised that making a few big-budget films a year that appealed to the masses was more lucrative than making dozens of smaller ones, and a business model was born. Since then budgets have soared and artistic merit has taken a back seat. [...] After a wave of acquisitions in the 80s and 90s, the six "majors" that dominate global box office are now parts of massive media conglomerates. They have found ways to both boost profitability of their films and mitigate the risks associated with making such huge investments. [...] The first thing the studios have done is spread the risk by getting dozens of smaller production companies to invest alongside them, reducing their exposure to a potential flop.
