Stem cells 'link' to repeat miscarriages, say scientists - BBC News
[ is this a western phenomenon? sick population? not africa, not some parts of japan? ] Accelerated ageing "In fact, this may be the only way to really prevent miscarriages in these cases." The team found a shortfall of stem cells was the likely cause of accelerated ageing of the womb lining which resulted in the failure of some pregnancies. The lining has to renew itself each cycle and this renewal capacity is dependent on the resident stem cell population. Prof Brosens said: "Cultured cells from women who had had three or more consecutive miscarriages showed that ageing cells in the lining of the womb don't have the ability to prepare adequately for pregnancy." [...] "The real challenge now is to develop strategies to increase the function of stem cells in the womb lining," she said. The team will soon start piloting new interventions to improve the womb lining, she said. [ diet and lifestyle? ]

Mutant sperm-factories spread in testes - BBC News
But the University of Oxford study showed mutant spermatogonia gain a "tumour-like" competitive edge, leading to a greater proportion of sperm becoming defective. Experts said couples should consider having children earlier in life. A range of diseases including autism and schizophrenia are more likely with older dads due to mutations in their sperm. And the risk of very serious health problems goes from around four in every 200 births to five in every 200 once the father passes the age of 50.

Why postcodes are determining fertility treatment - BBC News
austerity! >> IVF treatment is minority on budget and on peoples mind! // Health chiefs have blamed the cuts on "extremely challenging financial circumstances". Each IVF cycle costs individual CCGs anywhere between £1,300 and £6,000, depending on geography. Mid-Essex said it treated about 100 people a year, and could make annual savings of £750,000 by ending specialist fertility services. Its medical director, Dr Donald McGeachy, told Inside Out he could understand patients' "displeasure" at the cuts. But he said with a £9m deficit to plug, tough decisions had to be made. "We try very hard to provide everything that we need, but there are some things that we are not going to be able to do," Dr McGeachy added. [...] !!! Pando: “Is this thing on, bro?”
Earlier this week, The Information published the results of a three-month research project on diversity in venture capital. The results were exactly as you’d expect: There isn’t any. Diversity in venture capital is far worse than the tech industry as a whole. In an op-ed on the site, Social Capital’s Chamath Palihapitiya wrote something that was surprising: He aggressively called out the industry. Not off the record. Not in whispers with journalists. Not saying “some VCs.” He went full barrels on the industry writ-large

Is there anything you would have done differently? I would have networked my socks off when I was first starting out. I think the problem for women is that we’re so focused on what we want that we don’t have time for flashy lunches and golf days. Men do it so well – they network and build amazing contacts. I think, certainly in my case, I didn’t recognise the value of it at the time because, when I was younger, I was focused on building the business. I came to it quite late – but it’s at the beginning that you need it.

Intel Capital’s Lisa Lambert on the firm’s new $125 million Diversity Fund | PandoDaily
The plan is to invest in what we think is representative of the global society. All the data points to more diversity in our country and across the globe. As these communites have more influence and more purchasing power, they should be involved in the development of products that are going to serve the market they represent. We think it is good business. Designing products and investing in companies that Intel can partner with that serve these communities. [...] But also, from a practical standpoint, if you look at the venture capital community as a whole, it is pretty homogenous in terms of demographic breakdown. I think a lot of them aren’t sourcing these diverse deals because they don’t have access to those networks and have those communities. [...] I think the perception that there wouldn’t be deal flow, and what we found is that that is most definitely not true. [...] It’s not the pure tech, hard tech company that you’d expect Intel to invest in, but Intel is branching out.

Ellen Pao Says Silicon Valley Isn’t A Meritocracy. It’s Not. | TechCrunch
Pao also took issue with the “pipeline issue” excuse for not hiring diversely. “I hate the pipeline issue,” Pao said. “It allows people to say, ‘I’m doing my best, it’s out of my hands. There’s a whole slew of things that can make it more fair.'” Swisher said she felt the same way about unconscious bias: It allows people to absolve themselves of responsibility for bias. Pao said she did not think Silicon Valley, a place where it’s possible to have all white male meetings all day every day, was a meritocracy. “I think SV aspires to be a true meritocracy … but there is not an even track to success. No. With 6% women in VC, level of funding for women-led startups, it just doesn’t seem that that could possibly be the case.” // bit.ly/1HV44Hg Williams leads unconscious bias workshops that aim to educate employees on the science behind decision-making and encourage a "culture where employees are comfortable with -- & held accountable for -- calling out prejudice, both blatant and subtle.

Silicon Valley’s Maturity Problem | Re/code
The common diagnosis is that the Valley has a maturity problem, where first-time managers with big responsibilities and budgets build cultures of excessive behavior. But the reality is much more complicated. Rapid growth, a total absence of training, a cultural deficit and employees too focused on perks are a few contributors. Valley companies that want to continue down this path of impressive growth and success need to address these issues. [...] For companies, growing quickly in a very short period of time is a serious HR challenge. It’s hard to hire big numbers of talented employees who are a perfect cultural fit. It consumes significant HR resources and can limit that team’s ability to do anything else, like focus on training, culture or employees’ engagement.

For Stanford Class of ’94, a Gender Gap More Powerful Than the Internet - NYTimes.com
“If a woman says no, she means yes!” “You’re all [expletive] slaves.” [Sacks] made it clear that he found the graffiti itself deplorable, calling it “sexist and violent,” in his first essay for The Stanford Review, a conservative-libertarian campus newspaper. But he also argued that an earlier round of graffiti — including a crude statement about President George Bush — had been just as offensive. [...] Keith Rabois, another former editor, said in an interview. But there was an ugly side as well; Mr. Rabois left campus in 1992 after yelling “Can’t wait until you die,” punctuating it with a homophobic slur. He said afterward that he had been protesting campus speech codes. Mr. Sacks was almost as abrasive, joking in print about an imaginary course called “Bathroom Self Defense for Heterosexuals.” [...] it was not clear that they recognized the basic concerns of many female and minority students — that they would not have the same opportunities as their white male peers. bit.ly/1Ev1UgU

Women In Tech: It’s Not Just A Pipeline Problem | TechCrunch
Between ages 25 and 30, 41% of the young talent with credentials in those subject matters are female … [but] 52% of this talent drops out … The most important antigen is the machismo that continues to permeate these work environments … 63% of women in science, engineering and technology have experienced sexual harassment. "Pinterest was the first place where I felt like an engineer," said Chou. "It's hard to explain or articulate. When I came here, I was treated as an equal." Sometimes the discrimination is not subtle, like the time when a male engineer at a computer language conference asked her, "What do you do? Photocopy s---?" Diversity and Startups - Y Combinator Posthaven
"Sexism in tech is real. One of the most insidious things happening in the debate is people claiming versions of “other industries may have problems with sexism, but our industry doesn’t.” Both men and women claim this, even though it keeps getting harder to do in the face of shocks like the Tinder texts. We know there is a problem, especially when it comes to starting companies[.]" - // personal values, habits, (culture) will start to reflect internal/corp values and culturehttps://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=8086549

The Future of Pando | Ugly.
The fact is, I’m getting a total pass for something I have repeatedly said was my responsibility, while my female business partner is receiving the full blame. It seems to me that either the person or persons spreading the smears about Pando has decided that a female employer is deserving of abuse and scorn in a way that a male boss isn’t, or they’ve cynically concluded that a female boss presents a much easier target for an Internet hate campaign. [...] In the past 72 hours, I’ve come to truly realize what female founders and CEOs in our industry deal with every day of their lives. That it took me this long to understand is another of my many failings. The ugliness has to stop. [ It is easier, faster to bash the weaker sex. especially if the women on top is not apologetic. it seems. men + anonymity of internet and the non-attachment, non-face-to-face situation, feel the urge to say stuff like X, about Sarah Lacy and the other week about Marissa Mayer, who overslept. ]

If you are scared motherfucker, go to church." ...

BBC News - Angelina's mastectomy... and other medical stories of 2013
And there is no doubt about the impact a poor night's sleep has on the whole body. The activity of hundreds of genes was altered when people's sleep was cut to less than six hours a day for a week. [...] There was a shift in understanding psychiatric disorders when it was shown autism, attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder, bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder and schizophrenia all shared several genetic risk factors.
