Chips: Forscher ergründen Suchtgefahr - SPIEGEL ONLINE
Essen = Droge

Analysis: a year in health - supply and demand | Holyrood Magazine
stop increasing general taxation. increase tax on causes. Verursacherprinzip. // Calls for a similarly tough approach on obesity have not yet been rewarded with a strategy, despite one being due last year and Scotland’s obesity rates amongst the highest in the world, even higher than in the rest of the UK.

Could the protracted legal wrangling with the drinks industry have tempered the Scottish Government’s appetite for imposing tough restrictions on food manufacturers and supermarkets? It will be clearer when the obesity and diet strategy emerges in the winter. [...] One long-awaited strategy which did see the light of day was the new mental health strategy, launched by Maureen Watt in March, but the minister may well have been disappointed in the response.

The document “lacks the ambition and investment that Scotland deserves” said the Scottish Association for Mental Health’s chief executive, Billy Watson.

The question, as with the rest of NHS Scotland’s challenges, is how would it be paid for?

Sell high calorie foods in plain packaging to beat obesity, says Brain Prize winner | Science | The Guardian
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-39183178 Peter Dayan, Ray Dolan and Wolfram Schultz share €1m neuroscience prize for work unravelling the brain’s reward system Selling high calorie foods in plain packaging could help in the battle against obesity according to a leading researcher who has won a share of the most lucrative prize in neuroscience for his work on the brain’s reward system. The colourful wrapping and attractive advertising of calorie-rich foods encourage people to buy items that put them at risk of overeating and becoming obese in the future, said Wolfram Schultz, a professor of neuroscience at the University of Cambridge. “We should not advertise, propagate or encourage the unnecessary ingestion of calories,” [ ... dopamine is released in anticipation of a reward, not just consumption of reward, thus seeing comfort food packaging and buying it, releases dopamine = walking into today's supermarket is dopamine rush for some, a high, irresistible, can not stop themselves from buying them 50/50 sugar/fat combos! ]

NHS budget control 'will require staff cuts'
It says the government should be honest about NHS spending plans at a time when patient demand is rising. [...] The NHS leadership is set to unveil plans to get hospitals and other trusts to stick to agreed spending limits. In the last financial year, trusts ran up a collective deficit of £2.4bn - and the aim is to cut that figure significantly. [...] "It is no longer credible to argue that the NHS can continue to meet increasing demand for services, deliver current standards of care and stay within its budget. This is widely understood within the NHS and now needs to be debated with the public. "There are no easy choices, but it would be disastrous to adopt a mindset that fails to acknowledge the serious state of the NHS in England today." //&! bbc.in/29mkr7G - An overspend would be a serious breach of Whitehall protocol and lead to senior officials being hauled over the coals by the National Audit Office.

Obesity 'likely culprit' behind womb cancer rise
Rising levels of obesity may be fuelling an increase in the number of women diagnosed with womb cancer, the charity Cancer Research UK warns.
Its figures show around 19 in every 100,000 women in the UK were diagnosed with the disease in the 1990s - climbing to 29 in 100,000 in 2013.
Researchers acknowledge the science behind how extra weight is linked to cancer is not clear - but say hormones produced by extra fat may play a part.
They say more studies are needed.

Sugar tax: How bold is it?
[Gov still wants to carry out a consultation = Watered down by Food Lobby ] But the more important question is whether this will have an impact on child obesity rates. One in 10 children start primary school obese. By the end, one in five are obese. If you add in those who are overweight, it's one in three. [...] our diets are simply not good enough. [...] Food Foundation produced a model of a typical family's diet. [...] consumed too much sugar and saturated fat and too little fibre, fruit, vegetables and oily fish. [...] However, this should not be seen in isolation. The government is expected to publish its much delayed child obesity strategy in the summer. That could include restrictions on advertising and marketing, as well as a sustained campaign to reduce the sugar content of foods and drinks across the board.

Could fining parents cut childhood obesity? - BBC News
More than 600 million people, or 13% of the world's adult population, are obese. The rate more than doubled between 1980 and 2014, according to the World Health Organization. The estimated cost to the global economy is $2tn (£1.3tn), including £47bn to the UK. National and local governments have struggled to address obesity, defined as having a body mass index - based on the ratio of height to weight - of more than 30. They often face accusations of nanny-statism and opposition from food and drink companies if they do so. Attempts have been patchy and experts are divided on what, if anything, works. // [ THUS NUDGE and push people making the right decision by progressive (increase every other year) sugar/fat tax and animal products tax and subsidize produce, especially in food deserts. and tax food chain products accordingly. ] In 2012, France quadrupled the tax on saturated fat-rich palm oil, dubbed the "Nutella tax" because the popular hazelnut spread contained the ingredient.

From social media to the catwalk, is fantasy beauty failing young women? | Life and style | The Guardian
The world of vloggers and YouTubers has created a perverse, homogenised “beauty” with no diversity or reality. Jane Cunningham, journalist [...] The concept of appearance as a commodity to be valued has filtered from Hollywood to family homes across the UK. A 2013 attitudes survey by the Guide Association finding that 87% of girls aged 11-21 believe women are judged more on their appearance than their ability. The dissatisfaction resulting from the oft-perpetuated narrow vision of a beauty ideal can lead to low self-esteem – and worse. Jane Cunningham, the journalist behind Britishbeautyblogger.com, says young girls come to her in tears, feeling hopeless and helpless, unable to reconcile their own appearance with what they believe to be beautiful.

One-fifth of youngsters suffer from 'high anxiety' - BBC News
The study looked at the wellbeing and mental health of 7.5 million young people in the UK aged 16 to 24. [...] The figures also show a rising proportion of young people who felt dissatisfied with their health. [...] The figures from the ONS show a picture of a growing number of young people who are satisfied with their lives - but with a persistent minority reporting unhappiness or suffering from anxiety. [...] Campus anxiety [...] But in terms of anxiety, 18% report high levels of anxiety and almost 16% have "medium" levels of anxiety. In a separate measure, there are almost 21% of young people with "evidence indicating depression or anxiety". And young people's perceptions of their own physical health seemed to be progressively more negative, with more expressing dissatisfaction and fewer feeling satisfied. [F]igures for the wellbeing of younger children which showed about one in eight youngsters between the ages of 10 and 15 reported symptoms of mental ill-health.

More maternity units closing doors, union warns - BBC News
The Royal College of Midwives (RCM) said a shortage of midwives was having a major impact and mistakes would "almost certainly be made". Some 42% of units shut down temporarily in the past year, its survey found. The government said it was determined to ensure "every mother and baby gets the highest quality care". A poll of 83 heads of midwifery at NHS trusts found there had been a rise in the number of units that had closed their doors, with 33% having closed the previous year. The RCM said budget cuts were also affecting services, with midwives struggling to cope with a rising birth rate and increasingly complex births. [...] But he added that rising numbers of complex pregnancies were also putting pressure on other UK countries. [...] The RCM says there is a shortage of 2,600 full-time midwives.

Cancer virus discovery helped by delayed flight - BBC News
Epstein Barr virus // Wikipedia - It is best known as the cause of infectious mononucleosis (glandular fever). It is also associated with particular forms of cancer, such as Hodgkin's lymphoma, Burkitt's lymphoma, gastric cancer, nasopharyngeal carcinoma, and conditions associated with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), such as hairy leukoplakia and central nervous system lymphomas. There is evidence that infection with EBV is associated with a higher risk of certain autoimmune diseases, especially dermatomyositis, systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, Sjögren's syndrome, and multiple sclerosis. Some 200,000 cancer cases per year are thought to be attributable to EBV. //&! http://nutritionfacts.org/?s=chicken //&! Cholesterol and Alzheimer’s disease - YouTube
>> medical profession may come around: what is bad for your arteries and heart is bad for your brain as new research shows. cholesterol levels do play role/correlate with "Cerebral amyloid angiopathy"/beta-amyloid formation in the brain aka brain plaques. After all, its a build up of the arteries in our brain (brain consists mostly of fat) "Cerebral amyloid angiopathy is a neurological condition in which proteins called amyloid build up on the walls of the arteries in the brain. The condition increases the risk of hemorrhagic stroke and dementia." - 1.usa.gov/1MlBi6u // And prevention is better than cure because cognitive function starts to be lost early on before medical/personal detection of the condition. // LDL cholestero may be able to cross blood brain barrier. ‘What is the Government’s role in the fight against cancer?’
“From the APPGC’s standpoint, if the past few years have been about putting in place the tools required to reduce the ‘cancer gap’ between the NHS and other comparable health systems, then the next years will be about putting the tools to good use, driving up standards, highlighting best practice and shining a light on dark corners. Gomez went on to criticise the tabloid press, who have spent years picking apart her relationship with ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber as "vile". "I've been working since I was seven. I've been a Unicef ambassador since I was 17. It's so disappointing that I've become a tabloid story," she said.

High-fat high-protein diets promote cancer. even vegetable fats. and both together is great environment for tumors. // thus 80/10/10 started by Doug Graham. and supported by T Collin Campbell in Whole to focus 80/10/10 macros in a Whole-Food Plant-Based Diet. // But Dr Greger also showed / talked about one study in his nutritionfacts.org videos, that even people threatened with death, are unlikely to change their diet, even if recommended by their treating physician. It's a case by case. Patient Compliance. WHY? Because people grew und and still live in an environment that is rigged against their health.

Is it HEALTHY to have Obese role models? Tess Munster - YouTube
fat shaming (does not help, ultimately) is not enlightenment (public education and personal self-education, reading up how you harm yourself and people from high up & ur parents have poisoned you since your inception (epigenetics, pollution)), medical intervention, helping someone when you were in their shoes and found help and or helped yourself. Only YOU YOURSELF can be of true interest about YOUR health, because it is your life, your health, your well being, happiness, your disposable income not to spend on medical care. Not food multinational conglomerates owned by a handful shareholders! Theyre not interested in ur health or the nations exploding health care spending. They are interested in maintaining the status quo. Dividends. Profits. Less regulation & oversight. Rising share price. Share buybacks. As child ur indoctrinated, by those people. Diabetes uses 10% of NHS drugs bill - BBC News
Diabetes now accounts for 10% of the NHS drugs bill in England, according to official figures. The Health and Social Care Information Centre report shows £869m was spent on drugs for the disease last year. It marks a sharp rise from the £514m being spent on the drugs a decade ago, when they accounted for just 6.6% of the prescriptions budget. The figures include drugs for both type-1 and type-2 diabetes, which affect 2.8 million people in England. It includes insulin, metformin and other anti-diabetic drugs. // &! Doctors call for new tax on sugary food and drinks - BBC News
Doctors have called for the introduction of a tax on sugary food and drinks to tackle what they describe as an "obesity epidemic". The Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh warned that being overweight may now be considered "the norm". It claimed a tax would help fund the "spiralling" healthcare costs associated with the problem. The British Soft Drinks Association (BSDA) insisted that the case is "not compelling". It cited research which suggested a 20% tax would save just four calories per day. Liverpool University chair of clinical epidemiology, Simon Capewell, is due to speak at a conference on the issue in Edinburgh later, entitled: "Obesity: A 21st Century Epidemic". [ ... rootless tax evaders crony capitalists have stake and no shared economic long-term interest ... capitalism has no selfl-imiter ...]

What Causes Insulin Resistance? | NutritionFacts.org
Prediabetes and type 2 diabetes are caused by a drop in insulin sensitivity blamed on “intramyocellular lipid,” the buildup of fat inside our muscle cells. // fat. sugar tolerance higher with lower fat intake. but western processed foods are sugar & fat bombs combined ( youtu.be/71j8TPwkTQE ), and don't forget the salt and the non-existing fiber and physiochemical and vitamins and minerals. &! &! How Fat May Hurt the Brain, and How Exercise May Help - NYTimes.com
But scientists hadn’t understood how excess weight affects the brain. Fat cells, they knew, manufacture and release substances into the bloodstream that flow to other parts of the body, including the heart and muscles. There, these substances jump-start biochemical processes that produce severe inflammation and other conditions that can lead to poor health. Many thought the brain, though, should be insulated from those harmful effects. It contains no fat cells and sits behind the protective blood-brain barrier that usually blocks the entry of undesirable molecules. However, recent disquieting studies in animals indicate that obesity weakens that barrier, leaving it leaky and permeable. In obese animals, substances released by fat cells can ooze past the barrier and into the brain.

Hugh Hendry Capitulates: "Can't Look At Himself In The Mirror" As He Throws In The Towel, Turns Bullish | Zero Hedge
First David Rosenberg, then Jeremy Grantham, and now Hugh Hendry: one after another the bears are throwing in the towel. As Investment Week reports, speaking at Harrington Cooper's 2013 conference this morning, Hugh Hendry said "he is no longer fighting the two-way feedback loop which is continuing to boost risk assets." The reflexive feedback loop envisioned by Hendry is the following and centres on the currency war being played out between the US and China, "in which US QE prompts dollar-denominated investment to head to China, and China fights the resulting upwards pressure on its currency by manufacturing an investment boom. Hendry said this creates a "global supply glut", leading to falling US inflation expectations (as this supply far outweights US domestic demand) - which in turn prompts the Federal Reserve to loosen policy once again." Rinse. Repeat. [... DONT FIGHT THE FED ...] [...] You have got to be in things that are trending.

Your Fat Has a Brain. Seriously. And It's Trying to Kill You. | Fitness - Health and Fitness Advice | OutsideOnline.com
Everyone knows that being fat is bad for you, but most people can’t explain exactly why. Some reasons are obvious. Fat tends to go hand in hand with diabetes, and more weight means increased stress on joints and the heart. More puzzling to researchers is that excess fat seems to be linked with cancer of the kidneys, colon, and liver, and even to cognitive decline. >> Overweight [too much of visceral fat] - fat function becomes distorted and turns into low-grade chronic inflammation. Long-term low-grade chronic inflammation IS the first stage of cancer. [Too much of this visceral fat] may actually help accelerate the aging process. [L]iposuction only removes the good subcutaneous fat, which is why several recent studies have associated the procedure with negative health outcomes. [Research also found how minimal amounts of visceral fat infiltrated muscle and liver - making them at risk for diabetes & co.] [... muscle is an endocrine organ.]
