Warning: your festive meal could be more damaging than a long-haul flight | George Monbiot | Opinion | The Guardian
http://www.theguardian.com/environment/meat-industry - A kilogramme of beef protein reared on a British hill farm can generate the equivalent of 643kg of carbon dioxide. A kilogramme of lamb protein produced in the same place can generate 749kg. One kilo of protein from either source, in other words, causes more greenhouse gas emissions than a passenger flying from London to New York. //&! http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2015/jun/23/eat-less-red-meat-and-cycle-more-for-your-and-the-planets-health // [...] I’m not suggesting that you eat no meat or other animal products. 'Almost too late': fears of global superbug crisis in wake of antibiotic misuse | Society | The Guardian
Despite European Union regulations aiming to cut back on the unnecessary use of antibiotics, Dr Brown believes it will take more than just legislation to tackle the superbug crisis. Market forces will need to be compelled to cut usage, perhaps when prompted by a shift in public opinion, he said. “Those with a vested interest find ways around legislation. So, in addition to public policy we will need also the power of market forces,” he added. “When the public start demanding meat that has not seen antibiotics - because they understand that the meat may contain antibiotic resistant bacteria - only then will real progress be made. We need education about the threat.”

Bacteria that resist 'last antibiotic' found in UK - BBC News
[ over 80% of antibiotic use - livestock farming. also use of colistin. self-regulated. ] Bacteria that resist the most common antibiotic of last resort - colistin - have been discovered in the UK. Officials say the threat to human health is low, but is under ongoing review. Scientists warned the world was on the cusp of a post-antibiotic era when such resistance was discovered in China last month. Now checks have discovered the same resistance on three farms and in samples of human infections. [...] Colistin-resistance was discovered in fifteen of them, including samples of Salmonella and E. Coli. [...] The DNA that gives bacteria resistance to colistin - the mcr-1 gene - can spread rapidly between species. The concern is that colistin-resistance will now find its way into other superbugs to create infections that doctors cannot treat. //&! youtu.be/M2xZBngTIas //&! bit.ly/1O5oHWa //&! bit.ly/1MW3FYW //&! bbc.in/1PkB6G9 //&! 50-50 chance to salvage situation - bit.ly/1Zmx8Qg

[...] //&! bbc.in/1X133Ih

Wasser: Mineralwasser, Leitungswasser - Welches ist am besten? - SPIEGEL ONLINE

Diabetes uses 10% of NHS drugs bill - BBC News
Diabetes now accounts for 10% of the NHS drugs bill in England, according to official figures. The Health and Social Care Information Centre report shows £869m was spent on drugs for the disease last year. It marks a sharp rise from the £514m being spent on the drugs a decade ago, when they accounted for just 6.6% of the prescriptions budget. The figures include drugs for both type-1 and type-2 diabetes, which affect 2.8 million people in England. It includes insulin, metformin and other anti-diabetic drugs. // &! A Liverpool health experiment which just might save the NHS - BBC News
[ a bomb oozing, not exploding, just getting bigger & bigger & each passing year not tackling the causes - harder to resolve. ] True to form, the wise men at the top of the NHS in their headquarters in Leeds and Liverpool have identified the source of their pain: it's us. We are victims of our own lifestyle choices, demographically ever more numerous, and culturally driven by untameable expectations. We drink too much, we are too fat, we smoke, and we do not exercise and the average age of the population is increasing. The pressure is intolerable. A morning at A&E or a GP's surgery is like a scene from The Day of the Triffids. No power on earth could save us from ourselves and we are lucky to live as long as we do. [...] Unless we change the way we do things, the NHS in England will die. [...] [ FOCUS HAS TO CHANGE - from treatment to prevention and education. ] "The NHS can't cope: no health service would cope - anywhere." // intrinsic motivation by ppl to change for the better.

Beyond a restatement of the commitment to an extra £8 billion in 2020 [...] detailed analysis of the financial needs of the NHS in England is underway. Department of Health and Treasury officials are poring over projections for health demand. They need to be sure that the £8 billion identified by NHS chiefs is realistic. That figure was reached after assuming highly ambitious efficiency savings of £22 billion by 2020. Ministers want to be assured that figure is achievable.
