Google CEO Sundar Pichai Brings in Less Egotistical Leadership | Re/code
“In leadership at Google, you have to be three-plus standard deviations better than normal in technical ability,” said Bowden, an equity partner at Data Collective who spent eight years at the search giant. That is, Google’s top execs stand well above the average software engineer in skill. That trait, Bowden continued, does not often correlate with an above-average “emotional intelligence” — a capacity for empathy. The savants usually aren’t people persons, said Bowden. Translation: They can be complete jerks. “Sundar,” Bowden added, “is a rare example.” [...] A former Google exec put it less charitably: “All the assholes have left.”

What Alphabet Means — The Information
Google’s growing ambitions were complicating an already complicated structure. [...] Google’s new structure—more than a year in the making—foreshadows more big acquisitions, some spinoffs and probably some more financial accountability. But can Google avoid a conglomerate tax? // &! Larry Page and ‘Retirement’ 2.0 - It is that the transition itself is so unusual, and yet a blueprint I believe other CEOs will try to follow. [ leverage what you have to reach out even further, when you can. then do it. enabled by dual-class stock structure despite haggles with Wall Street during earning calls of spending/losses of Google X and operational costs (lavish perks and compensation) and Wall Street thinking/feeling they get the shorter stick. Forget compounding (real world impact (people, planet, health, ...) >> Brin & Page's view, imagination, vision ...) if there is no % behind it. They are financiers, making money with money. ] // &! Alphabet Is More Than Just a New Name | Re/code
Shareholders Don’t Like Moonshots. [...] Organizing as a Conglomerate Makes a Lot of Sense While Google’s CEOs say the new entity will never be a “consumer-driven business,” it’s quite likely that subsidiaries like Android or YouTube could turn out that way. By changing not only it name, but also by reorganizing in a substantial way, Google will change the way the market perceives it. Because they have their hands in many different pots, conglomerates are traditionally seen as more stable investments than technology or advertising companies. Being a conglomerate also makes it much easier for Google to continue growing its business through acquisitions and spinoffs.

Do You Trust Larry Page? - Stratechery by Ben Thompson
Given the fact that Alphabet née Google is the second most valuable enterprise in the world, it’s striking to consider Larry Page’s 2014 assessment of the company he co-founded with Sergey Brin: I think we’ve not succeeded as much as we’d like. [...] Even Google’s famously far-reaching mission statement, to “organise the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful”, is not big enough for what he now has in mind. The aim: to use the money that is spouting from its search advertising business to stake out positions in boom industries of the future, from biotech to robotics. [...] Googles non-social approach to advertising vs Facebook and everyone else ] [ ad world begins finally to shift away from TV & other legacy forms & FB/Google are main beneficiaries coming years of changing ad spend ] [ Page/Brin want 2 lead the org 2 a new frontier. Apple is launching search engine to destroy Google — and you’re already using it | Calacanis.com
“Paid Inclusion” is basically the ads that consumers think are content, but are really ads. You can see this on your desktop by doing a search for “used iPhone.” The majority of the screen real estate is now ads! In the example above 11 of the 12 links are advertisements! [...] I could see Apple knocking 10 points off Google’s search business here in the USA in the next couple of years by simply making search an advertising-free piece of Apple’s OPERATING SYSTEM! [...] Apple is leapfrogging Google by making search something that is built into the core of your mobile phone and desktop. [ user experience, frictionless ] [...] Tim Cook is painting Google, accurately, as the evil successor to Microsoft, and Google’s management team is reinforcing this by closing ranks and destroying their partners. Google Creates New Company Called Alphabet, Restructures Stock - Bloomberg Business
[ Cracking under Wall Streets pressure ] The new structure [ holding company ] will give greater clarity into how Google invests in various ventures, including driverless cars, high-speed Internet service and health-related technologies. It also makes it easier to make any future acquisitions or potential divestments. Omid Kordestani will transition from his role as chief business officer to become an adviser to Alphabet and Google. “Sergey and Larry will be able to allocate their time differently between the core and non-core businesses,” “You have Sundar focusing on the core business, and you will have Larry and Sergey kind of looking at the future growth businesses.” [...] [Larry Page] “Our company is operating well today, but we think we can make it cleaner and more accountable.” [ Google Inc. = Search worlds information. ]

Google’s $6 Billion Miscalculation on the EU - Bloomberg Business
via https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=10021018 // Google declined to make its executives available for on-the-record interviews, but several concede that the company was caught off guard by the intensity of European criticism, in large part because of its broad popularity with users. Google is so relied upon that many people casually assert that the most prevalent search term on rival Bing is, in fact, “Google.” (Microsoft declines to confirm this.) [...] The more Europeans rely on Google, however, the more they’ve come to fear it, making it an easy target for politicians. Last November members of the European Parliament voted 384 to 174 for a symbolic proposal to break up the search giant into two separate pieces—its monolithic search engine and everything else. On Google's Right to Know vs. Europe's Right to Be Forgotten | New Republic
Since Google is in the information business, any efforts to regulate it are inevitably represented as censorship—as Eric Schmidt's remark on the right to know reveals. But of course, the information in question is not eliminated in its entirely. One can still find it, albeit at a higher cost—it is just made less visible. The motto of "The Circle," the company at the center of Dave Eggers' eponymous dystopian novel about a high-tech giant with an eerie resemblance to Google, is “Secrets are lies. Caring is sharing. Privacy is theft.” Well, to those three we can now add the fourth: Regulation is censorship.
