Media Websites Battle Faltering Ad Revenue and Traffic
[lots more competition for people's attention] The trouble, the publishers say, is twofold. The web advertising business, always unpredictable, became more treacherous. And website traffic plateaued at many large sites, in some cases falling — a new and troubling experience after a decade of exuberant growth. Online publishers have faced numerous financial challenges in recent years, including automated advertising and ad-blocking tools. But now, there is a realization that something more profound has happened: The transition from an Internet of websites to an Internet of mobile apps and social platforms, and Facebook in particular, is no longer coming — it is here. Why are YouTube stars so popular?
To non-fans, these tics can be irritating. The linguist Mark Liberman described them as an “intellectual used-car-salesman voice” akin to “high-energy sales pitches” or even a “carnival barker”.

But that’s another point about the popularity of YouTube’s stars: the way they divide fans from non-fans is a big part of their appeal too. [...] “Looking at survey comments and feedback, teens enjoy an intimate and authentic experience with YouTube celebrities, who aren’t subject to image strategies carefully orchestrated by PR pros. Teens also say they appreciate YouTube stars’ more candid sense of humour, lack of filter and risk-taking spirit, behaviours often curbed by Hollywood handlers.”

'Like a beautiful painting': image of New Year's mayhem in Manchester goes viral | UK news | The Guardian
[ symptom ] Quoted by the Manchester Evening News, Goodman he said the appeal of the image might lie in its unusual subject matter. “There are plenty of photographs published that show people having a great time. It’s much safer and easier photographing happy, willing people posing than photographing angry, drunk people candid. “That’s not a criticism of the former, but it’s one reason why the latter might stand out.” He said he was “flattered” that his photograph had been compared to Renaissance art, but said he was merely “in the right place at the right time”. Or as American photographic pioneer Ansell Adams put it: “Sometimes I arrive just when God’s ready to have someone click the shutter.”

'Mad Friday': Christmas revellers given alcohol warning - BBC News
The last weekend before the Christmas holiday could see alcohol-fuelled emergencies increase by up to 50%, officials believe. Alcohol sales across December could reach £2.3bn, health campaigners say. Public Health England has urged people to join its "Dry January" campaign to give up alcohol in the new year. According to figures from Public Health England and Alcohol Concern, alcohol sales in pubs, clubs, restaurants and hotels across the UK increased by 142% on the final Friday before Christmas last year. [...] "A period of abstinence could help encourage less harmful, better drinking habits in the long-term - even six months later, evidence from Dry January shows that more than two-thirds of participants are still drinking less. [...] Ungleichheit zwischen den sozialen Gruppen verstärkt.

Every Day I Want To Quit Social Media
[ no more time to reflect and think for yourself ... we are all and feel Alon Together. ] I am drowning in a sea of anxiety created by Twitter and Facebook. [...] We all want to be recognized as clever or witty. [ your best side, public ] [...] I ended up on social media for a reason, and though the reason escapes me during moments of sheer panic and anxiety, I take part, no matter what — the pursuit of relevancy, or, in the strictest sense of the term, validation, is an imperative that exists as a key part of humankind’s quest for meaning. Self-definition has become intertwined with social media. We are all here for each other. I wake up staring at my phone. I fall asleep to the glow of the very same screen.

Spotify Shrinks Music Download Sales, Fights Piracy – Study | Re/code
Is Spotify shrinking the music business, by giving people a good reason not to buy music anymore? Or is Spotify helping the music business, by giving people a good reason not to steal music anymore? Yes! That’s the conclusion from a new study published by the National Bureau of Economic Research this month. [...] The nice thing about the study is that it manages to bolster both Spotify’s main argument to the music industry for the past few years — if you don’t let us distribute your music, and get some money for it, the pirates will do it and you’ll get none — and the music labels’ primary worry about streaming — there’s no way we’re going to sell enough subscriptions to replace albums and single-track sales!

One-fifth of youngsters suffer from 'high anxiety' - BBC News
The study looked at the wellbeing and mental health of 7.5 million young people in the UK aged 16 to 24. [...] The figures also show a rising proportion of young people who felt dissatisfied with their health. [...] The figures from the ONS show a picture of a growing number of young people who are satisfied with their lives - but with a persistent minority reporting unhappiness or suffering from anxiety. [...] Campus anxiety [...] But in terms of anxiety, 18% report high levels of anxiety and almost 16% have "medium" levels of anxiety. In a separate measure, there are almost 21% of young people with "evidence indicating depression or anxiety". And young people's perceptions of their own physical health seemed to be progressively more negative, with more expressing dissatisfaction and fewer feeling satisfied. [F]igures for the wellbeing of younger children which showed about one in eight youngsters between the ages of 10 and 15 reported symptoms of mental ill-health.

Digitaler Burnout: "Zu viel Smartphone macht unglücklich" - SPIEGEL ONLINE
[ portion USE time! 3x1hr?

Cancer risk 'even from light drinking' - BBC News
The work in the British Medical Journal looked at two large US studies involving more than 100,000 adults. The clearest link was for breast cancer. Experts say the findings reinforce the health message that people should limit how much they drink and have some alcohol-free days. There is no guaranteed safe level of drinking, but if you drink within the recommended daily limits, the risks of harming your health are low, they say. [...] Dr Richard Roope, of the Royal College of GPs, said: "GPs do not want to be killjoys - but we want our patients to live long and healthy lives, and lifestyle habits, such as smoking and drinking alcohol, are very real risk factors in developing cancer that can't be ignored." // &! http://nutritionfacts.org/?s=alcohol

Twitter Acquires Android Lockscreen App Cover, Moves Deeper Into Mobile Services | TechCrunch
[ THE HOME SCREEN on your PHONE is now the SCREEN YOU have to be on. PERIOD. Twitter is trying to get there with this deal and tech&talent acquisition. >> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cplq7qotDIk // http://homescreenproject.com/post/49044240848/gary-vaynerchuks-home-screen-so-many-unread-text // glancing on it many times a day just to ... ] “If that changes down the road, we’ll provide another update here,” the founders Todd Jackson, Gordon Luk and Edward Ho note in a blog post announcing the deal. You can read Josh’s review of how Cover works here. Cover is being somewhat cryptic in discussing what it will be working on at Twitter. “Twitter, like Cover, believes in the incredible potential of Android,” they write. “They share our vision that smartphones can be a lot smarter — more useful and more contextual — and together we’re going to make that happen. We’ll be building upon a lot of what makes Cover great, and we’re thrilled to create something even better at Twitter.”
