Ellen Pao: ‘I Have Decided to End My Lawsuit Against Kleiner Perkins’ | Re/code
Still, Pao underscored that the deck was stacked against her in terms of resources. “I think it is wrong that employees have to pay in this situation, but I simply cannot afford the risks of more costs to fight a firm with massive PR and legal resources,” she said. “The court system is not set up to create an even playing field.” [...] To be clear, Kleiner and I have not reached any agreement to settle this matter. Settlement might have provided me with financial benefits, but only at the great cost of silence." [...] She said she would continue to speak out on issues of gender disparity, but she was spending time with her family and also returning to investing and working with entrepreneurs. &! on.recode.net/1OfLRII

The Trouble With Reddit’s Content Policy Update | Re/code
It makes sense that hosting what the Southern Poverty Law Center described as the nexus of white supremacism on the Internet makes it difficult to “maintain a healthy and successful platform.” It’s obvious that Reddit doesn’t want to play host to racism and harassment. But the company doesn’t want to compromise too much on the “free speech” principles that hardcore Redditors, who are integral to the day-to-day functions of the site, obsess over. And Reddit also wants to cut ties with well-known hate centers like r/coontown that offend both advertisers and common decency. Reddit’s problem is that it wants to have it both ways. [ tl;dr Reddit wants to be more family friendly to be more attractive to advertisers, after all it has the pageviews to have advertising, what ever form, make it a sizeable revenue pillar. That should have long ago been communicated, still hasn't. ]

Former Reddit CEO alleges co-founder Alexis Ohanian fired Victoria Taylor, not Pao
via redd.it/3d6asv // nyti.ms/1gz0Iks // yishan - former CEO :: Alexis wasn’t some employee reporting to Pao, he was the Executive Chairman of the Board, i.e. Pao’s boss. He had different ideas for AMAs, he didn’t like Victoria’s role, and decided to fire her. Pao wasn’t able to do anything about it. In this case it shouldn’t have traveled upstream to her, it came from above her. Then when the hate-train started up against Pao, Alexis should have been out front and center saying very clearly “Ellen Pao did not make this decision, I did.” Instead, he just sat back and let her take the heat. That’s a stunning lack of leadership and an incredibly shitty thing to do. I actually asked that he be on the board when I joined; I used to respect Alexis Ohanian. While more than 200,000 Redditors want Ellen Pao to resign, readers are jumping ship to budding competitor sites as top brass pushes to go mainstream [...] Redditors – as users are called – have accused the site of increasingly trying to monetize its popularity, and it appears their sentiments came to a head last Thursday, when Reddit’s popular director of talent, Victoria Taylor, was let go from her post. Ellen Pao Says Silicon Valley Isn’t A Meritocracy. It’s Not. | TechCrunch
Pao also took issue with the “pipeline issue” excuse for not hiring diversely. “I hate the pipeline issue,” Pao said. “It allows people to say, ‘I’m doing my best, it’s out of my hands. Pao said she did not think Silicon Valley, a place where it’s possible to have all white male meetings all day every day, was a meritocracy. “I think SV aspires to be a true meritocracy … but there is not an even track to success. No. With 6% women in VC, level of funding for women-led startups, it just doesn’t seem that that could possibly be the case.” // bit.ly/1HV44Hg Williams leads unconscious bias workshops that aim to educate employees on the science behind decision-making and encourage a "culture where employees are comfortable with -- & held accountable for -- calling out prejudice, both blatant and subtle.

Mansplaining the Ellen Pao trial & fixing the gender issue in venture capital | Calacanis.com
To understand why these VC firms are all male in many cases is to understand that they are not really businesses — they are partnerships. In my experience they operate more like social clubs, sports teams or, wait for it, fraternities. Because their business is not actually building something, but rather sitting around talking about which founders they should back to build something, the required skill is “getting along” and “shooting the shit” and “debating.” In a way, they’re more like debate clubs than corporations. That’s why they constantly go on retreats to try and bond and build trust with each other. [...] They want to build enough trust so that if they say no to Google or Facebook, they are able to keep functioning in the face of such a huge miss! [...] Changing this system will be very hard. What’s at Stake in the Ellen Pao Case | Re/code
the clubby world of venture capital, a male-dominated culture that has often been criticized as an insular fraternity of privileged white men despite its veneer of being a meritocracy. [...] While gender inequality has always been an issue in Silicon Valley, it has now come to dominate more of the conversation in the industry. Venture capital firms in particular have appallingly few female partners. [...] But Kleiner Perkins still has more to lose. Though it is an icon of Silicon Valley, having provided funding for historic winners like Netscape, AOL, Amazon, Sun and Google, it has, in recent years, been upstaged by younger and flashier firms.
