How diet is changing - the good and the bad - BBC News
But on other measures, diet has not improved, the report, from the Food Standards Agency and Public Health England, says.

Fruit and vegetable consumption remains largely unchanged and is still under the recommended five-a-day level.
Fibre intake has fallen slightly, while vitamin and mineral consumption is down.

And there has been little change in oily fish intake.

At the heart of this NHS cash boost lies a dishonesty: tax | Rafael Behr | Opinion | The Guardian
Theresa May’s boast that extra funding won’t involve tax rises should set alarm bells ringing [...] Stevens knows that £20.5bn is a lot, yet not enough. It repairs some of the damage inflicted by austerity – a problem denied for years by ministers who insisted the NHS budget was ring-fenced. That was true in a narrow technical sense. But rising costs and a displaced burden from deep cuts elsewhere imposed an unbearable strain on hospitals and GPs. [...] Phased in over five years, the £20.5bn uplift temporarily restores health spending to something like its pre-austerity trajectory. But it is unclear where the next £20.5bn comes from. Or the £20.5bn after that. The Institute for Fiscal Studies estimates that budgets should rise by 3.3% over 15 years to keep services at their current level. If the ambition is to make them better, the annual increase would be more like 5%, taking health spending to around 10% of national income. That is the level maintained by countries like the Netherlands and Sweden. May has no plan to keep Britain in that league. [...] The dishonest part is making it sound like a self-sustaining process when it is a one-off event.

NHS long-term plan: Focus on prevention 'could save 500,000 lives' - BBC News
MISTAKE. PREVENTION SHOULD BE ON TOP OF THE BUDGET, NOT TAKEN AWAY FROM THE BUDGET. That after the conservatives cut prevention (Public Health)
The government and NHS England are publishing the long-waited 10-year plan for healthcare later today. From what we know so far, it aims to reduce reliance on hospitals, giving them a smaller cut of the overall budget, and puts a greater emphasis on preventing ill health. Ahead of the publication, NHS England confirmed that a third of the extra £20bn a year the NHS will receive by 2023 will be spent on GPs, community care and mental health. Its chief executive, Simon Stevens, called the plan a "practical, costed and phased route map". However, senior doctors have complained that hospitals are facing a "near-on impossible" task over the next few years.

Private firms cash in on over-stretched NHS - BBC News
Under-pressure NHS services in England are spending over £1bn a year buying care from outside the NHS because they are unable to keep up with demand. The bill is being racked up by hospitals, ambulances and mental health trusts, data obtained by the BBC shows. NHS managers said money was being wasted as often it was done at the last minute, and led to the NHS over-paying. Sending patients to private clinics for care like hip and knee surgery is thought to be the most common purchase.

New leadership, same old problems - BBC News
new money won't be seen till next year, new winter crisis is coming for sure, and the wait lists will get even longer. - Health think tanks argue that the 3.4% is really only enough to cope with rising demand, never mind improving care.

Hospital sources point out that the new money won't come to the NHS until next year.

Nothing extra so far has been allocated for this winter and the intense pressure seen in the first months of this year is likely to be repeated.

There is every chance that waiting lists for routine surgery will get longer and accident and emergency performance won't get better.

Even with the £6bn cash boost next year, there are warnings that there won't be any rapid improvement. His instincts will be to tell the service to get on with job with the money it has. But that conviction will be tested in the depths of winter if hospitals are struggling to cope. Long waits, cuts and rationing: happy 70th birthday NHS | Zara Aziz | Society | The Guardian
NHS is turned into A&E only aka life-threatening // Many treatments are now classified as criteria-based or needing individual funding requests (that is, not routinely funded unless a detailed application is submitted by a GP or hospital specialist with evidence such as trials/research of its benefits and especially over any other patient with the same problem). So, for instance, a patient with pain and loss of hand function from a ganglion cyst would need an individual funding request. Clinical commissioning groups have a long list of conditions that need such approval – such as varicose veins, tonsillectomies and hernia surgery. Most of my applications are rejected as almost no one (despite the level of their suffering) is deemed exceptional.

PM will have to either raise taxes, slash public spending or break her own spending rules - “The government is in a bind,” the IFS said. “It is extremely doubtful that large additional cuts to spending on other public services are either feasible politically or consistent with maintaining quality.

“So unless it is able and willing to implement tax rises or further cuts to the social security budget over the rest of this parliament it is hard to see how a significant injection of additional cash into the NHS would be consistent with the government’s stated fiscal objective.”

Bev Humphrey: ‘The underfunding of the NHS is almost conspiratorial’ | Society | The Guardian
Humphrey believes the health service is now close to breaking point and that government policy is to blame. “The chronic underfunding of the NHS is almost conspiratorial,” she says. “The way it has been starved of money for the last seven years is scandalous. We haven’t got to this decade to find everyone is suddenly iller. I fear the government will turn around in a few years and say, ‘Look, we have given you money and it hasn’t worked – we need a new system.’ I am concerned this would lead to a compulsory insurance model.” It would create a two-tier system, she feels. “The NHS is not only a very efficient service, it’s also clinically excellent. If we move away from that [a service that is free at the point of need] there’s no going back. What you would end up with is very poor quality services for the poorest and those who need it most.”

Unintended consequences: when government health campaigns backfire | Life and style | The Guardian
Meanwhile a second research paper has spotted a flaw in the government’s “responsibility deal” with drinks makers. The industry agreed on reductions in alcohol levels by 2015, but while more low-alcohol products are on offer, things aren’t panning out as expected. Cambridge University researchers have scrutinised how low-alcohol drinks are being promoted by Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons and found that consumers are being prompted to buy these beverages in situations where they wouldn’t ordinarily hit the bottle. The drinks are presented as a perfect lunchtime treat, and as healthy options next to pictures of fruit. “Lower-strength wines and beers appear to be marketed not as substitutes for higher-strength products, but as ones that can be consumed on additional occasions with an added implication of healthiness,” wrote the researchers. Make that an “irresponsibility deal” then.

Prostate cancer deaths overtake those from breast cancer - BBC News
The number of men dying from prostate cancer has overtaken female deaths from breast cancer for the first time in the UK, figures show. An ageing population means more men are developing and dying from the disease. Prostate Cancer UK says advances in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer are paying off, and increased funding could benefit prostate cancer. The biggest cancer killers in the UK remain lung and bowel cancer, with prostate now in third place. The latest figures from 2015 show there were 11,819 deaths from prostate cancer compared with 11,442 from breast cancer. //&! https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2018/feb/05/men-dying-prostate-cancer-reason-gender-bias-daily-mail

Over 3,700 deaths linked to alcohol - BBC News
Alcohol was a factor in more than 3,700 deaths in a single year in Scotland, according to new research.

Findings from NHS Health Scotland show that drink was involved in more than 1,000 deaths from cancer in 2015.

It was also linked to hundreds of deaths from conditions such as liver disease, as well as accidental injuries.

In addition, more than 41,000 people were admitted to hospital as a result of consuming alcohol, the study found.

Experts said the findings show that alcohol has a wider impact on health than many people think.

NHS trusts now imposing cruel new pain tests for hip op | Daily Mail Online
[significant impairment as w transgender healthcare] Op 'rationing'
The Daily Mail says strict rationing rules being used by three quarters of NHS hospitals means patients in need of a replacement knee or hip must have to use a walking stick or wheelchair before they will be considered for surgery.

The paper says patients can be rejected for surgery unless they are judged to be in distress for most of the day, unable to sleep, or continually taking painkillers.

It adds that patients who are told they can't have an operation are advised to install hand rails at home, perform stretches or buy special shoes.

Calls for mandatory health information on alcohol labels - BBC News
He accused alcohol producers, of wishing "to withhold information on alcohol and health from the public".

"It is clear from this research that the public want labels to include the drinking guidelines, and we know from our own research that 81% of the public want to see the guidelines on labels. Producers should accept this.

"We all have a right to know the drinking guidelines, along with the risks associated with alcohol, so that we are empowered to make informed choices about our drinking."
