Why Theresa May is a true heir to Richard Nixon | Aditya Chakrabortty | Opinion | The Guardian
Trump wasn’t playing politics: he was prosecuting a culture war – and a culture war is anti-politics. [...] First came her speech about how “the country is coming together”, even while her political opponents were not. Her cheerleaders were in the press the next day, baying for “Blue murder” and for her to “Crush the saboteurs”. I watched all this from the US; and in the land where Democrats are now routinely labelled “treasonous” it all sounded eerily familiar: us v them; the people v Westminster; leavers v remainers. [...] “forged a public language that promised mastery of the strange new angers, anxieties, and resentments wracking the nation”. [...] Nixon appealed to the “silent majority”. [...] “less about a traditional left-right battle and more about identity and values” [<< Rentnerrepublik]

What the Hell Happened to Personal Style?
Where a 14-year-old Kate Moss put in her time on Portobello Road with Corinne Day, learning to thrift, self-style, and create her own ambling glamour, the young fashion plates of today have outsourced the development of their style to professionals. And those employed to keep the young and stylish considered that way don’t dare take any real risks, for fear of sartorial missteps, bad tabloid titles (and the online equivalent), or a mention on a worst-dressed list. [...] We are so inundated by these images from paparazzi, from media, from the stars themselves, that we cease to see any meaning behind any of it. Which would be fine (their funeral, as the saying goes), except it’s a very costly absence of meaning, both societally and economically.

The Truth About Caitlyn Jenner’s Politics (time.com)
After all, many Americans still see transgender people as strange or illegitimate. So it wouldn’t surprise me if interest in this story is partly driven by a desire to see the world’s most famous transgender person being taken down by her own community. Caitlyn Jenner has positioned herself as a representative or “ambassador” of trans communities, so I can understand why trans people object or take issue when her views fail to accurately reflect or support those communities. But when people who are unconcerned with transgender rights themselves start piling on, quite frankly, I am suspicious.

Tory thinktank warns Elliott Johnson's parents against broader inquest | Politics | The Guardian
[ public blackmail and scaremongering fearmongering ] The parents of the Conservative activist Elliott Johnson have been warned by the Tory thinktank where he used to work that their son’s mental health and sexuality would be aired in public if they insisted on broadening the scope of the inquest into his death. [...] George Alliott, the lawyer representing Conservative Way Forward (CWF), the thinktank where Elliott Johnson worked until he was made redundant a month before his death, told the hearing that if the scope of the inquest was broadened it would lead to further questions being asked about Elliott’s sexuality and wellbeing. Addressing the coroner, Tom Osborne, Alliott said: “If this scope is to widen, you are going to have to conclude that it will need to involve references to Elliott’s mental health records and his sexuality.” [ wasn't there just a high court decision that mental health records are not allowed in sexual assault/rape cases (ie to deface victim) ]

British people think their media is the most biased and right-wing in Europe - and they're probably right | Voices | The Independent
Just two individuals - Rupert Murdoch and Lord Rothermere - controlled a staggering 52.2 per cent of online and print national news publications in the UK in 2013 [...] All of these newspapers either backed the Conservatives or Ukip in the most recent election and are all considered traditional right-wing publications. If you add up the readership of these right-wing newspapers, they account for a staggering 69 per cent of national newspaper readership in Britain in 2013. Left Foot Forward concluded their analysis by stating that “over three quarters (77.8 per cent) of the press is owned by a handful of billionaires.”

The public voting yes. // David Cameron has made it clear that civil servants will not be allowed to help ministers who want to make the case for Britain leaving the European Union. He set this out in a letter listing four rules that will apply to ministers who want to campaign for Brexit. [...] [ and makes clear what his cabinet and peers can vote on ] Ministers will only be free to dissent on the issue of staying in the EU or leaving. [...] Ministers who speak from the frontbench will be expected to support government policy. But “we need to be flexible and apply common sense”, Cameron said. The Trans Movement Needs a New, Science Based Strategy | Brynn Tannehill
Tuesday's defeat of HERO highlights several conclusions that the LGBT movement needs to take to heart for the next decade or so. Foremost is that we will not win transgender issues directly at the ballot box, or in the gerrymandered republican legislatures which dominate the political landscape. [...] When opponents frame legal protections for transgender people as a choice between a group strangers (who are suspected of being perverts anyway) and the safety your wives and daughters, transgender people will lose every time. So far, anti-LGBT forces have been far more successful at pushing their narrative. I don't foresee this changing anytime soon. [...] Convincing large numbers of people driven by fear and religious beliefs simply will not happen. &! bit.ly/1MgrDKK &! https://redd.it/3rxwmd &! slate.me/1Op7eck

Every Day I Want To Quit Social Media
[ no more time to reflect and think for yourself ... we are all and feel Alon Together. ] I am drowning in a sea of anxiety created by Twitter and Facebook. [...] We all want to be recognized as clever or witty. [ your best side, public ] [...] I ended up on social media for a reason, and though the reason escapes me during moments of sheer panic and anxiety, I take part, no matter what — the pursuit of relevancy, or, in the strictest sense of the term, validation, is an imperative that exists as a key part of humankind’s quest for meaning. Self-definition has become intertwined with social media. We are all here for each other. I wake up staring at my phone. I fall asleep to the glow of the very same screen.

People are underestimating Snapchat just like they underestimated Facebook - Vox
In fact, almost every one of today's big internet companies — Yahoo, Google, Facebook, and Twitter — faced similar skepticism in their early years. Back in 2007, Kara Swisher (who now runs Re/code which, like Vox.com, is part of Vox Media) expressed astonishment that Facebook could be worth $15 billion. A year before that, a Slate headline read "$1 Billion for Facebook? LOL!" (Facebook is now worth $260 billion.) [....] A company's early ad revenue just doesn't tell us anything interesting about its long-term earnings potential. It takes a while for a company to hire a sales team, settle on an effective advertising format, and build awareness among potential customers. [...] But while it might take time for Snapchat to build a successful advertising program, there's little doubt that it will be able to. Every day, 100 million people open up the Snapchat app. As long as that's true, advertisers are going to be willing to pay top dollar to reach them.

Monica Lewinsky: The price of shame - YouTube
In 1998, says Monica Lewinsky, “I was Patient Zero of losing a personal reputation on a global scale almost instantaneously.” Today, the kind of online public shaming she went through has become a constant. In a brave talk, she takes a look at our “culture of humiliation,” in which online shame equals dollar signs — and demands a different way.

Amanda Bynes, Robin Williams, and the Spectacle of Mental Illness | Let's Queer Things Up!
[making money on the cost of other people ] // "People with co-occurring bipolar and schizophrenia have one of the highest suicide attempt rates of any group. 70.6% of these individuals will attempt suicide in their lifetime. You would think this would frighten us, and that we would be offering Bynes compassion on the mere basis that what she may be facing is, without a doubt, deadly. Yet the vast majority of press and articles surrounding Bynes’ mental state seems to ignore the stark reality of her struggle, and instead, opt to mock her erratic and unusual behavior. Rather than recognizing that she may have an illness, they have turned mental illness into a spectacle to watch, enjoy, and ridicule. [...] If no one has explained this to you, let me be the first to say that it is morally repugnant that we, as a society, are mocking mentally ill people. [...] It’s all fun and games until someone dies, as was the case with Robin Williams. [&too LGBTQIA << hate speech & crime]

Here are the deets, according to the Guardian: Cyrus, who became famous as a Disney child star in Hannah Montana, told Sunday Night that “I put some picture of me smoking weed … on my Instagram because I was brought up in the way that we never thought marijuana was bad,” when asked about her use of the banned substance. “You know what hurts your brain? The Down And Dirty History Of TMZ
“There’s no doubt: [Harvey] Levin absolutely changed the way celebrities function today.” TMZ has been responsible for breaking the biggest celebrity scandals of the last 10 years: effectively ending a 30-year career (Mel Gibson), tarnishing golf’s most sacred idol (Tiger Woods), and puncturing the pristine image of celebrity royalty (Solange Knowles attacking Jay Z). But it’s not just celebs: In 2009, it caught a bank spending millions of taxpayer bailout funds on a lavish party (Northern Trust), and, via spin-off TMZSports, instigated the $2 billion sale of an NBA team by applying the same surveillance to a racist owner (Donald Sterling) once reserved for the Hollywood stars and socialites.

Dear Rebecca Adlington, they're the ugly ones | Laurie Penny | Comment is free | The Guardian
The recreational body-shaming of female celebrities matters to a great many people who look at what you have had to deal with and are reminded, with a familiar chill, that whatever women and girls achieve, we are nothing if we do not conform to society's demented definitions of beauty. We can't win. If we don't cram ourselves into those claustrophobic standards of physical perfection, we're called disgusting, but if we do, we're weak and shallow.
