Facebook hired a pollster to track Zuck's public image, but he quit because working for Facebook filled him with shame / Boing Boing
“I joined Facebook hoping to have an impact from the inside,” he says. “I thought, here’s this huge machine that has a tremendous influence on society, and there’s nothing I can do as an outsider. But if I join the company, and I’m regularly taking the pulse of Americans to Mark, maybe, just maybe that could change the way the company does business. I worked there for six months and I realized that even on the inside, I was not going to be able to change the way that the company does business. I couldn’t change the values. I couldn’t change the culture. I was probably far too optimistic.”

How Europe's far right fell in love with Australia's immigration policy | World news | The Guardian
Espersen has studied Australia’s Pacific solution in detail, so I pushed him: where would your Nauru be? “Morocco is a very good example of a country that would possibly do it for an amount of money,” he claims. And Danish staff could run the camps. “We would run the things ourselves and pay the Moroccan authority a fee. We would also make it possible for their local grocers or butchers to come and deliver goods … There will be excellent service, I can assure you.” In the Danish right’s offshore paradise, there would be education, too. Nobody will be “living in ratholes”, he promises. [...] As with Australia and its offshore centres, what happens in Libya stays in Libya while Europe washes its hands of responsibility. If the flow of migrants surges again during the next war or climate crisis, the clamour for offshoring will only grow louder. And if the Australian model is adopted more fully in Europe, then there will be no hope for legitimate refugees to claim asylum through legal channels, and more of them will seek illegal paths to Europe.

Tax evaders exposed: why the super-rich are even richer than we thought | Inequality | The Guardian
The higher one moves up the wealth distribution, the higher the probability of hiding assets [...] More broadly, the key to successfully fighting tax evasion is to change the incentives for the providers of wealth concealment services. Over the last few years, a number of banks have pleaded guilty in the US to criminal conspiracies to defraud the Internal Revenue Service – yet they were able to keep their banking licences, and the fines they had to pay paled in comparison to their profits. A more ambitious approach would put criminal organisations out of business. If tax evasion ceases to pay, it will disappear.

Yes this really is the end of Tory austerity – because it was never about economics in the first place | The Independent
[private sector will pick up the tap - the households did, but not corporations! bc long-term ROI growth in not attractive in the west w secular stagnation! see Richard Koo ] But it was a very long time coming. It became clear within a year of George Osborne’s 2010 “emergency budget”, which forced through huge cuts in capital budgets and an intense squeeze on Whitehall departments and welfare spending, that the austerity medicine was hurting, not helping.

The economy was flatlining, teetering on the verge of recession. Whether this was primarily due to the crisis in the neighbouring eurozone and a spike in global oil prices or because the negative knock-on impact of the government’s domestic spending cuts was bigger than initially thought is still debated by economists.

Brexit is a misnomer. it is not about British, Brexit is about the English! And Scotland failed to amend the outcome. What matters is age in turnout. The problem of granny voting out. Cancer drugs price rise 'costing NHS millions' - BBC News
[ capitalists love competition, but corporatists, not. they love raising profit margin ] The UK researchers said NHS negotiations with drug companies were failing to contain costs, and getting access to cheaper drugs would allow more people to be treated with more modern medicines. [...] Dr Hill said he was surprised to find several companies had consistently raised the prices of cancer treatment.
"We have found that some companies take over the supply of some generic cancer medicines and then raise the price progressively," he said. [...] As a result of the bill, companies found to be raising prices with no clear justification will be referred to the Competition and Markets Authority, and could face fines.

Skills and infrastructure top priority in industrial strategy, say UK firms | Business | The Guardian
The government’s new industrial strategy must focus on improving skills and infrastructure in Britain rather than bailing out struggling large companies, according to a survey of business leaders.

The findings suggest businesses are not in favour of rescue deals such as the government’s proposed support for the steel industry. Theresa May, the prime minister, and Greg Clark, the business, energy and industrial strategy secretary, are expected to unveil an industrial strategy for the UK next week. They will set out the government’s approach to key industries and issues such as infrastructure, skills, regulation and research and development.

The Growth Trap
[ growing for growth sake! vs growing in a world/area that is not conducive to grow ] When Twitter went public in 2013, its stock soared and its value jumped to $25 billion. Its founders and early investors got rich. But since then, the company has been considered a failure, despite the fact that it boasts 320 million active users, because it's not growing fast enough. Douglas Rushkoff, author of "Throwing Rocks at the Google Bus: How Growth Became the Enemy of Prosperity," talks to Steve Paikin about why he sees the push for more growth as dangerous. // true capitalists (shareholder, crony, greedy) w/o self-regulation or governance extract all the value there is to extract and then leave, dispersing it to the few who already have [...] WE MUST REWRITE THE RULES OF THE GROWTH GAME ITSELF! [...] you want to optimise the economy based on velocity of money (circulation of money), not share price and value extraction [...]

Clouds gather over solar power after golden years of success
After a day in which Britain generated more power from the sun than from coal for the first time, the industry should be rejoicing. The Fed Sends A Frightening Letter To JPMorgan, Corporate Media Yawns
At the top of page 11, the Federal regulators reveal that they have “identified a deficiency” in JPMorgan’s wind-down plan which if not properly addressed could “pose serious adverse effects to the financial stability of the United States.” Why didn’t JPMorgan’s Board of Directors or its legions of lawyers catch this?

It’s important to parse the phrasing of that sentence. The Federal regulators didn’t say JPMorgan could pose a threat to its shareholders or Wall Street or the markets. It said the potential threat was to “the financial stability of the United States.” [...] “…the default of a bank with a higher connectivity index would have a greater impact on the rest of the banking system because its shortfall would spill over onto other financial institutions, creating a cascade that could lead to further defaults. Is Stephen Crabb the man to tackle this age of extreme inequality?
The Panama Papers will lead to the dynamiting of Tory credibility, but new work and pensions secretary, Stephen Crabb, is unlikely to prove the saviour of his party’s reputation. [...] Last autumn’s U-turn over cuts to working tax credits was a smoke screen. The axe will fall, only not everywhere, not just yet. From this week, existing universal credit claimants will lose up to £220 a month as the work allowance is pared back faster than the national living wage increases to replace it. [...] Short of taking a vow of poverty and retreating like Charles V to a monastery, there is nothing he can say now that will change the perception that he is at the head of a party that has a fundamental personal interest in preserving the advantages of the 1%.

Why Everyone Must Get Ready For The 4th Industrial Revolution
For example, as automation increases, computers and machines will replace workers across a vast spectrum of industries, from drivers to accountants and estate agents to insurance agents. By one estimate, as many as 47 percent of U.S. jobs are at risk from automation. Many experts suggest that the fourth industrial revolution will benefit the rich much more than the poor, especially as low-skill, low-wage jobs disappear in favor of automation.

But this isn’t new. Historically, industrial revolutions have always begun with greater inequality followed by periods of political and institutional change. The industrial revolution that began at the beginning of the 19th century originally led to a huge polarization of wealth and power, before being followed by nearly 100 years of change including the spread of democracy, trade unions, progressive taxation and the development of social safety nets.

Tory thinktank warns Elliott Johnson's parents against broader inquest | Politics | The Guardian
[ public blackmail and scaremongering fearmongering ] The parents of the Conservative activist Elliott Johnson have been warned by the Tory thinktank where he used to work that their son’s mental health and sexuality would be aired in public if they insisted on broadening the scope of the inquest into his death. [...] George Alliott, the lawyer representing Conservative Way Forward (CWF), the thinktank where Elliott Johnson worked until he was made redundant a month before his death, told the hearing that if the scope of the inquest was broadened it would lead to further questions being asked about Elliott’s sexuality and wellbeing. Addressing the coroner, Tom Osborne, Alliott said: “If this scope is to widen, you are going to have to conclude that it will need to involve references to Elliott’s mental health records and his sexuality.” [ wasn't there just a high court decision that mental health records are not allowed in sexual assault/rape cases (ie to deface victim) ]

Britain heading for power cuts next winter, say 60 local authorities | Business | The Guardian
bit.ly/1TOwjhT &! A group representing 60 local authorities has warned that recent closures of large power stations have left Britain heading for power cuts next winter, despite assurances to the contrary from the government. [...] National Grid needed to act immediately to fill the supply gap by sending out new contracts for at least 2,500 megawatts (MW) of additional generating capacity – enough to power 2.5m homes. The alliance wants ministers to reconsider the level of carbon taxes, saying this is one of the key reasons why so many coal-fired power stations are being shut down early. [...] In recent years, coal, nuclear and gas-fired plants have been shut because of low prices, high operating costs or old age. Windfarms have been erected and new nuclear facilities promised but energy companies say gas plants cannot be built without higher subsidies. //&! bit.ly/1MpvhlE - UK doesn not meet 15% of EU renewables target, but cuts subsidies for renewables, duh! &! bit.ly/1sL8Kty

British people think their media is the most biased and right-wing in Europe - and they're probably right | Voices | The Independent
Just two individuals - Rupert Murdoch and Lord Rothermere - controlled a staggering 52.2 per cent of online and print national news publications in the UK in 2013 [...] All of these newspapers either backed the Conservatives or Ukip in the most recent election and are all considered traditional right-wing publications. If you add up the readership of these right-wing newspapers, they account for a staggering 69 per cent of national newspaper readership in Britain in 2013. Left Foot Forward concluded their analysis by stating that “over three quarters (77.8 per cent) of the press is owned by a handful of billionaires.”

George Osborne warns of further spending cuts in Budget - BBC News
[ LOL! ] But recent figures showing the UK economy was smaller than expected meant savings must be found in his Budget statement on 17 March, he said. [...] Mr Osborne said he would rather look for extra cuts now than risk breaking his own manifesto commitment to achieve a surplus in the budget by the end of this Parliament. The chancellor did not completely rule out raising taxes in the event of a further slowdown in growth, but said that now was not the time for "significant" tax hikes. [...] I'm absolutely clear we've got to root our country in the principle that we live within our means and that we have economic security." [...] "whole purpose of our economic plan was to have a budget surplus. [...] we got big challenges at home to make the economy more productive even as more people get work. [ because having part of your budget in the property bubble is so productive ] [...] I will do what is required to keep our country safe and secure." [ NOT CHANGING PLANS ie U-TURN ]

What’s so bad about mandatory workplace socializing? - Quartz
For working parents and people with limited disposable income, the cost of mandatory socializing can be prohibitive. There’s ample evidence that companies with strong cultures are more productive. But when hiring managers appraise job candidates for cultural fit, they don’t actually look for people who align with organizational values. Instead, they select the people who are most like them, as Northwestern University professor of management Lauren Rivera writes in The New York Times. Evaluating someone based on a shared affinity for kayaking, homebrew, and polo is a great way to choose a roommate or a fraternity member. But putting cultural fit first at work often means ignoring the role that class, race and gender play in shaping our hobbies, college backgrounds, and tastes.
