Why Theresa May is a true heir to Richard Nixon | Aditya Chakrabortty | Opinion | The Guardian
Trump wasn’t playing politics: he was prosecuting a culture war – and a culture war is anti-politics. [...] First came her speech about how “the country is coming together”, even while her political opponents were not. Her cheerleaders were in the press the next day, baying for “Blue murder” and for her to “Crush the saboteurs”. I watched all this from the US; and in the land where Democrats are now routinely labelled “treasonous” it all sounded eerily familiar: us v them; the people v Westminster; leavers v remainers. [...] “forged a public language that promised mastery of the strange new angers, anxieties, and resentments wracking the nation”. [...] Nixon appealed to the “silent majority”. [...] “less about a traditional left-right battle and more about identity and values” [<< Rentnerrepublik]

Sturgeon says May’s Brexit timescale matches referendum plan | Politics | The Guardian
Nicola Sturgeon has said there is no longer any rational case against a second Scottish independence referendum after Theresa May told her that the full Brexit deal would be known within 18 months.

The first minister said May’s disclosure, during a meeting in Glasgow, closely matched the Scottish government’s timescale for calling a fresh referendum between autumn 2018 and spring 2019. [...] She said she had reminded the prime minister that later this week she would be writing formally to ask the UK government to hand over the powers to stage a referendum in about two years’ time, but May had retorted that her position was clear: the UK government would not grant those powers until after Brexit was completed and the UK had left the EU.
- David Cameron had always in mind to get Conservative Party back together, thus no personal attacks of Leave Campaigners/Brexiteers. But this in turn backfired, dividing the union itself.
- also emergency budget/austerity v2.0 backfired by Osborne. Leave Campaign reframed it as "punishment budget"

Brexit Isn't Theresa May's Only Challenge - Bloomberg View [Editorial]
[! BLOOMBERG !] May’s approach to the British economy needn’t be radically different than the Cameron-Osborne agenda. Britain needs fiscal discipline to keep inward investment flowing, but it also needs reforms that will require both government spending and more private investment. A true one-nation agenda would also focus on improving education standards and job training, lowering barriers to entry for new businesses, and improving access to housing.

Up to 70% of people in developed countries 'have seen incomes stagnate' | Business | The Guardian
Research by the McKinsey Global Institute found that between 65% and 70% of people in 25 advanced countries saw no increase in their earnings between 2005 and 2014. The report found there had been a dramatic increase in the number of households affected by flat or falling incomes and that today’s younger generation was at risk of ending up poorer than their parents. Only 2% of households, 10 million people, lived through the period from 1993 to 2005 – a time of strong growth and falling unemployment – without seeing their incomes rise.

Growing calls for federal UK in wake of Brexit vote
[ out of a constitutional crisis the day after euref w pm quitting - should seek a new UK in a new world, different world ] According to Mr Fraser, the answer is federalism. An entrenched Scottish Parliament, an English Parliament sharing time at Westminster, English city regions with administrative but not legislative power, the replacement of the House of Lords with a senate representing "each federated part of the UK."
I do not intend in these musings to examine this particular set of ideas too closely. My attention is more aimed at the other advocate of federalism this week, Labour's Kezia Dugdale.

Does The Myth of Meritocracy show us how to alleviate inequality?
No debate about social mobility is complete without reference to the supposedly halcyon days of the 1950s and 1960s. The class fluidity of those decades, however, was not the result of professions becoming more meritocratic. It was caused by an unprecedented rise in the number of middle-class jobs: there was more room at the top. [...] Bloodworth writes that 21st-century society is characterised by a dwindling of professional jobs and more people slipping downwards: there is “more room at the bottom”. [...] Globalisation has created what the economist Robert H Frank calls “winner-takes-all” markets

The biggest blunder of them all
Keeping all this cautiously in mind, let’s look at the British establishment cock-up. According to one of those involved, this all started at a pizza restaurant at Chicago O’Hare Airport at the time of a Nato conference in 2012, when David Cameron and his closest political allies decided that the only way of scuppering Ukip and the Euro-hostile right of the Conservative Party was to give the British people a referendum.

The brutal way of putting this is that Cameron decided to put party management and tactics ahead of grand strategy, grossly overrated his own negotiating skills, and has been badly bitten in the bottom accordingly. He has often looked like a chess player who plays the next move brilliantly yet fails to see three moves ahead. //&! - Michael Gove and Boris friendships. //&! - Westminster

The politics of anger | The Economist
When Margaret Thatcher was prime minister, amid the triumph of Soviet collapse, an aide slipped Mr Fukuyama’s essay on history into her papers. The next morning she declared herself unimpressed. Never take history for granted, she said. Never let up. For liberals today that must be the rallying cry. //&! //&! - History never quite repeats itself, but its lessons are important nonetheless. We should recall that the first era of globalization, which reached its peak in the decades before World War I, eventually produced an even more severe political backlash.

Theresa May accused of treating EU migrants as a pawn in Brexit talks | Politics | The Guardian
The home secretary is facing intense political pressure to give cast iron assurance that the rights of EU migrants to remain in the UK would not be used as a bargaining chip in any future Brexit talks with the European Union.

Theresa May was accused of treating millions of EU citizens as a pawn in a wider Brexit negotiation. She said it was her intention that EU citizens should remain but said their rights would be a factor in any talks.

Tories urged to offer assurances to EU citizens living in UK

How the Brexit vote unleashed a mutiny against the old order | Politics | The Guardian
But the revolution that had delivered Brexit, driven in large part by white working-class votes, was sweeping all before it in the most unpredictable way – careers and ambitions, along with what had seemed the safest of assumptions. The aftershocks of the referendum were wreaking havoc with the old system. //&! How bad can Brexit be if it has made bankers think about inequality? [...] Bank of America Merrill Lynch (BAML) immediately called Brexit the “biggest electoral riposte yet to [the] age of inequality”. A warning to Gove and Johnson - we won’t forget what you did | Jonathan Freedland | Opinion | The Guardian
He didn’t believe a word of his own rhetoric, we know that now. His face last Friday morning, ashen with the terror of victory, proved it. That hot mess of a column he served up on Monday confirmed it again: he was trying to back out of the very decision he’d persuaded the country to make. And let’s not be coy: persuade it, he did. Imagine the Leave campaign without him. Gove, Nigel Farage and Gisela Stuart: they couldn’t have done it without the star power of Boris.

Mr Heseltine, a former Deputy Prime Minister, said there is now a "great gaping hole in the future of Britain's decisions makers" as well as investors from all over the world. Michael Gove delivered the biggest blow to Boris Johnson’s career yet | Matthew d’Ancona | Opinion | The Guardian
[ on purpose leaked? making it show like an accident cc auto-complete gone wrong ... to the right person at the end that it ends up in the papers! ] Yesterday’s leaked email from Gove’s wife, the journalist Sarah Vine, hinted that all was not well in Borisland. In the message, she reminded her husband that his presence on the ticket was intended to reassure press barons who did not warm to Johnson. In return, she said, Boris must give “SPECIFIC assurances” to Gove. One surmises that those assurances were not forthcoming – or that yesterday’s “crucial meetings”, referred to in the email, yielded additional problems.
