Up to 70% of people in developed countries 'have seen incomes stagnate' | Business | The Guardian
Research by the McKinsey Global Institute found that between 65% and 70% of people in 25 advanced countries saw no increase in their earnings between 2005 and 2014. The report found there had been a dramatic increase in the number of households affected by flat or falling incomes and that today’s younger generation was at risk of ending up poorer than their parents. Only 2% of households, 10 million people, lived through the period from 1993 to 2005 – a time of strong growth and falling unemployment – without seeing their incomes rise.

Businesses must alter 'toxic' attitude to executive pay, PwC says | Business | The Guardian
Companies have failed to address a “toxic” attitude towards executive pay and face a government crackdown if they do not act to curb boardroom excess, according to a report by consultancy group PricewaterhouseCoopers.

In polling carried out by PwC last month, two-thirds of Britons said they believed executive pay was too high, and nearly three-quarters said it made them angry if a chief executive was paid a lot while their company was doing badly.

New year, old grievances: why Britain’s bugbears in 2016 look very familiar | Martin Boon | Opinion | The Guardian
A new survey of what’s on our minds reveals a nation still obsessed with the same things as in the 1960s - inequality and immigration [...] Seven out of 10 suggest that inequality and immigration create the biggest societal divides of today [ but tories take on what is easiest, immigration. but not inequality ] So nothing’s changed, and it’s likely not much will – at least, not if you’re a member of our world-weary public, exasperated with the collective failure of political solutions to modern-day grievances.

Average monthly rent hits record high of £816, highlighting housing shortage | Money | The Guardian
Rents rose across most of England by averages of 6.3% and 8.5% in past year, say separate studies, but fell in the north-west, north-east and Wales [...] Housing charity Shelter said the figures “highlight the plight of an entire generation stuck in insecure and expensive private renting”. On Tuesday, official figures underlined the continuing difficulty of buying, as UK house prices surged to a record peak of £284,000 on average in August. According to the report from Your Move and Reeds Rains, rents rose to a “new all-time record” in September and are up a typical 6.3% on an annual basis. It found that rents are now almost a quarter (24%) higher than in January 2010, while the index of CPI inflation is just 14% higher over the same period. // bonuses and pay and profit for building companies are up as well. actively restricting demand to push up prices marginally (compounding over time). nearly all property sells before even the first brick is put down for the development!]

Working-class Americans feel screwed. I heard it across the entire country | US news | The Guardian
Donald Trump has exposed the opportunity gulf between those who make policy and those who live it – turning immigrants into scapegoats in the process [...] The disappointment, although often wrapped in anger over immigration, is at its core about diminished opportunity. It is consistent with the economic reality that has persisted over the last three decades: except for the very rich, Americans haven’t seen their wealth increase. The people I talked to are not entirely wrong; their particular job prospects and their particular wealth have been harmed. [...] The angry are mostly people who work with their hands, who feel stuck in a vise tightening from two sides: there is a greater number of people looking for the same jobs and there are fewer jobs available, since many of these jobs having moved overseas.

Volkswagen US boss told about emission cheat in 2014 - BBC News
Michael Horn said he was told about a "possible emissions non-compliance" in the spring of 2014. The revelation was made in testimony due to be presented to a committee of the US House of Representatives investigating the scandal on Thursday . He said he was told after a study by West Virginia University was published. "I was informed that EPA [Environmental Protection Agency] regulations included various penalties for non-compliance with the emissions standards and that the agencies can conduct engineering tests which could include 'defeat device' testing or analysis," he said. "I was also informed that the company engineers would work with the agencies to resolve the issue." NHS to begin denying people hearing aids for first time | Society | The Guardian
[ From January 2015 - bit.ly/13RgSyy - NHS accused of ‘cruel’ rationing of hearing aids ] [ NHS services, yet another example, is being rationed. Because budget is blown on chronic diseases caused mainly by diet and sedentary lifestyle. NHS CEO did say prevention is not addressed properly of how big the lever actually is long-term! ] The NHS will start denying people with hearing problems access to hearing aids for the first time from Thursday in a controversial move that critics claim will worsen sufferers’ social isolation. The GP-led NHS clinical commissioning group in North Staffordshire is taking the unprecedented step of ceasing to provide free hearing aids to mainly elderly people in its area with mild hearing loss. It is also making it harder for those with moderate hearing loss to get access to hearing aids by introducing new eligibility criteria against which patients will be judged.

How the banks ignored the lessons of the crash | Joris Luyendijk | Business | The Guardian
Joris Luyendijk spent two years talking to hundreds of City insiders. They revealed how close we came to disaster – and how quickly finance went back to business as usual [...] [Like in cycling, doping ... omerta ... blood brother ] The City is governed by a code of silence and fear of publicity; those caught talking to the press without a PR officer present could be sacked or sued. NHS could be 'overwhelmed' by people with long-term medical conditions | Society | The Guardian
The soaring number of people with long-term medical conditions [chronic] is threatening to "overwhelm" the NHS [...] The challenges posed by patients with chronic medical conditions are so great that they represent the "healthcare equivalent to climate change" and must force the NHS to undertake a major rethink of how it cares for such patients, Dr Martin McShane says in an interview with the Guardian. [...] 70% of the NHS's £110bn budget – £77bn – as well as £10.9bn of the £15.5bn spent on social care in England, [...] NHS will not bridge the £30bn gap that it fears will have emerged by 2020 between its budget and the volume of care needed [...] a healthy patient costs the NHS about £288 a year, those with one long-term condition cost an estimated £783, those with two cost £1,521 // [More doesnt stop sink overflowing! stop the faucet of new chronically sick people. VW lost the plot. But that’s the danger when business lacks social moorings | Will Hutton | Comment is free | The Guardian
VW’s existential crisis has revealed the weaknesses inherent in western economies. Change must now happen [...] Despite a vast R and D budget, VW is far from a leader in the electrical car or hybrid market. Mr Winterkorn’s bonuses were based on his capacity to deliver production, jobs and profits: environmental sustainability or engaging with wider stakeholders did not get a look-in. [...] Capitalism, in short, may have boundless creative and innovative energy – but it also has boundless ways to go wrong. Intriguingly, recent work by a group of researchers at Harvard and the London Business School compared 90 American companies that took sustainability seriously with 90 who did not. Over 18 years the 90 committed to sustainability delivered annual financial returns 4.8% higher than the other 90.

VW: Das Auto?
Gewinnbeteiligung & workers rep on board of directors!? Like in Germany. Especially in customer facing ops! It's not just about price, its also customer service! customer experience. acquisition (word of mouth, net promoter score - vs - getting foot-fall up through sales and deals) customer engagement. customer retention and empowerment - to make the better choice to shop where people are treated well, paid well, and shared economic interest (environment, ecology, sustainability, local economy and jobs (multiplier effects)). Compelling people to make a mindful and conscious choice, day to day and for the long-term! Differentiate, don't fight with Amazon and big grocery retailers for price, sales, deals. That war you lost already because you can't win that way (bc of them having deeper pockets, shareholders which look away since ever in case of Amazon, and it is their identity; why ppl shop there), new business, away from Amazon, Tesco & ASDA. What is Angela Ahrendts doing at Apple? - Fortune
“She motivates people. She inspires people. And she is the sort of person who wants to see things succeed as a team. It’s a rare quality.” [...] Ahrendts believes the key to the company’s future is not just marvelous products, but also engaging and energizing its nearly 100,000 employees, 60% of whom now work in retail division. “If you’re going to employ people anyway,” she says, “why not make them the differentiator? They’re not a commodity.” Now that there are 459 Apple stores in 15 countries, many people have their first Apple experience inside a store—a first impression that could forever tarnish the brand if it’s not good. “Burberry was about building a relationship,” she says. “But it was always about selling an amazing product that you would have forever. Apple is just a deeper relationship with a much broader constituency. Because it’s everybody.” // apple positioned itself just above everyone else it competes w [having a margin!], but not too far up to be douchy, off-setting

The Myth of Valley DoucheBaggery - John Battelle's Search Blog
But I think our industry culture is moving far faster than the writers at Silicon Valley might wish to believe. I think we’re seeing the rise of a new culture, one that rejects arrogance and the founder worship which breeds it. Inevitable outliers aside, the Valley and technology culture I experience every day in my work at NewCo is one of passion, sweat, earnestness, and good intentions. Sure, we all fuck up. And sure, the press (especially, not surprisingly, the press in New York) has a field day when someone does. But by and large, the teams making companies like Slack, LiveRamp, Medium, Earnest, MetroMile, Lyft, Okta, Pinterest, and hundreds more are damn fine people, and they are dedicating their lives to making something that creates positive change – a product or service that makes the world a better place (even if it’s in a small way). Major Executive Shake-Up at Yahoo Media Unit Amid Company-Wide Talent Turmoil (Update) | Re/code
There have been a lot of changes in the media unit too, including some layoffs and other adjustments. Under Savitt and with the support of Mayer, Yahoo has sought to create a content destination site, with elaborate online magazines and big-name hires like Katie Couric and David Pogue. Still, the lack of traction in reviving its core business, especially advertising, has begun to take its toll. And, no surprise, there are many more as other Silicon Valley companies — such as Twitter, Facebook and others — have grabbed the cream of the crop at Yahoo of late, as its core business has continued to suffer. I have spent the last several weeks compiling a long list of the leavings, so more to come.

Bumper payouts for housebuilding executives as market booms | Business | The Guardian
Two of Britain’s largest housebuilders, Berkeley Group and Persimmon, could hand out about £1bn to their top executives and managers in pay and bonuses over the next six years, boosted by strong UK house prices and government-subsidies for home-buyers. Five years, building a culture, and handing it off. - Laughing Meme
Nothing we know [ about X ] should be assumed to be true. // Technology is the product of the culture that builds it. // If you want to build for the long term, the only guarantee is change. Invest in your people and your ability to ask questions, not your current answers. Your current answers are wrong, or they will be soon. // Software development should be thought of as a cycle of continual learning and improvement rather a progression from start to finish, or a search for correctness. If you aren’t shipping, you aren’t learning. If it slows down shipping, it probably isn’t worth it. Maturity is knowing when to make the trade off and when not to. // You build a culture of learning by optimizing globally not locally. Bloomberg EIC outlines editorial vision in wake of cuts | Poynter.
[In your clients interest.] After a day of layoffs that claimed dozens of journalists from the ranks of Bloomberg’s massive reporting and editing corps, Editor-in-Chief John Micklethwait [ex-The Economist] called the departures a painful necessity intended on making the company stronger. [...] “Our purpose is to be the definitive ‘chronicle of capitalism’ – to capture everything that matters in global business and finance,” Micklethwait wrote.[...] "So if you are not intrigued by how people make money, or are inclined to sneer at those who are good at it, or yearn to practice “gotcha journalism” on investment bankers simply because they’ve chosen to be bankers, Bloomberg is probably the wrong place for you..." [...] The layoffs, which come after months of tumultuous relations between Bloomberg’s D.C. bureau and its New York office, have been read as a sign of decreasing editorial ambitions in Washington.

That is a meaningful shortfall, an 80% difference between the money they needed and the money they got. [...] In fact, you might have concluded they were in for some kind of serious financing and operational problem weeks in advance [ talked also in Jason's interview that they still have legacy customers who cost them too much but are sort of still keep on: book 'hard things about hard things'], when you connect the fairly clear dots between two attempts to raise capital within a month of each other, and which are increasingly unsuccessful. [...] We’re not talking about an equity financing here, we’re talking about debt. [...] debt is a harsh mistress, especially for a startup tech company.

Amazon's Culture: Toxic or Just Tough? by The Jay & Farhad Show
Hello! This week, Farhad Manjoo (New York Times) and Jay Yarow (Business Insider) are joined by special guest Jodi Kantor (New York Times) to discuss her polarizing article about Amazon's culture. // // how technology functions in the workplace - efficiency, quantified self << the feedback tool you can always use, what ever your state of emotion, gripe, stick, bias, prejudice, ... feudal Darwinism creeps into knowledge worker, white-collar and blue-collar workers, MBA's and PhD's. [...] contributes to gender inequality (women with the back on their wall, leave or get started and forget about family & kids, life.) [...] brutal years are NOT Tour of Duty - Reid Hoffman The Alliance. // PS: Reed Hastings (Netflix) Culture document transpires that it is expected to contribute, even if it doesn't spell it out. Netflix also had to fight and overcome as much as Amazon! Proves again that internal & external environment a company finds itself affects its values & culture inevitable [Thesis].

[ AMAZON's culture ] by USA TODAY Tech (podcast)
Amazon, Silicon Valley, Unicorns and Decacorns - go go go even for broke. making things happen. winning the category. // vs Google and Facebook are those that won sort of automatically and had not that much internal and external pressure growing up. had not to fight surviving dot.com crash. Facebook sort of became a self-runner despite of its many missteps. Amazon had to fight all the way, and still has to fight because now it faces antitrust on both sides of the Atlantic. That creates, inadvertently, a specific culture that has been cited by personal examples in the NYT piece.

The New Tech CEO Archetype – AVC
I believe that product is the heart and soul of tech companies, it is where it all comes together. You can’t build a great company without great products (or great people). So it’s heartening to me to see that the next generation of technology leaders is coming from product management. I think that bodes well for those companies and the tech industry in general. // learned from past mistakes, putting COO, finance guys, pure MBA managers, or else in the CEO role of Tech Companies *Yahoo! anybody? after all in a new world that is being build, its about the product and thus the user (experience) [UI UX product strategy, and thus companies strategy alignment]. And not about purely sales and marketing (stuffing products down the throat of companies that the end users hate (and the manage hates as well because staff are complaining and lost productivity), but the procurement manager (or CIO) got a great deal on and got a raise). << that was so 90's and the first decade of the 2000's.

Robert Reich: America is a nation of Amazons - Salon.com
before we celebrate the dawn of a new era, keep two basic truths in mind. First, these new policies apply only to a tiny group considered “talent” – highly educated and in high demand. They’re getting whatever perks firms can throw at them in order to recruit and keep them. “Netflix’s continued success hinges on us competing for and keeping the most talented individuals in their field,” writes Tawni Cranz, Netflix’s chief talent officer. [...] the vast majority of American workers – considered easily replaceable. Employers treat replaceable workers as costs to be cut, not as assets to be developed. Replaceable workers almost never get paid family leave, they get a few paid sick days, and barely any vacation time. [ three tier economy, those that are replacable, those who are somewhat not, and those who you can't easily replace - the 1% - reflective of CEO pay in parts ]
