The end of Atlanticism: has Trump killed the ideology that won the cold war? | News | The Guardian
"special relationship" - The foreign policy establishment has been lamenting its death for half a century. But Atlanticism has long been a convenient myth // Atlanticism has never had a very stable meaning. For one thing, the US and Europe have not always considered each other natural political partners. For most of American history, there hasn’t even been a unified “Europe” to partner with. [...] Advertisement

In 1973, Henry Kissinger, himself a transatlantic refugee, launched a “Year of Europe” tour to try to save the relationship in the name of containment, preventing the further growth of the Soviet Union. Speaking as Nixon’s national security adviser, he asked whether the Atlantic community could thrive as the memory of the second world war began to fade. As the “rigid divisions of the past two decades diminish, new assertions of national identity and national rivalry emerge”. He argued that Americans should continue to support European unity. “If we permit the Atlantic partnership to atrophy … we shall miss our historic opportunity for even greater achievement.”

How Europe's far right fell in love with Australia's immigration policy | World news | The Guardian
Espersen has studied Australia’s Pacific solution in detail, so I pushed him: where would your Nauru be? “Morocco is a very good example of a country that would possibly do it for an amount of money,” he claims. And Danish staff could run the camps. “We would run the things ourselves and pay the Moroccan authority a fee. We would also make it possible for their local grocers or butchers to come and deliver goods … There will be excellent service, I can assure you.” In the Danish right’s offshore paradise, there would be education, too. Nobody will be “living in ratholes”, he promises. [...] As with Australia and its offshore centres, what happens in Libya stays in Libya while Europe washes its hands of responsibility. If the flow of migrants surges again during the next war or climate crisis, the clamour for offshoring will only grow louder. And if the Australian model is adopted more fully in Europe, then there will be no hope for legitimate refugees to claim asylum through legal channels, and more of them will seek illegal paths to Europe.

London attack: Theresa May says enough is enough after seven die - BBC News
https://twitter.com/iyad_elbaghdadi/status/871490728396038145 & https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/jun/04/theresa-may-british-values-muslims-terror-threat - Speaking in Downing Street after a meeting of the government's emergency Cobra committee, the prime minister said the country "cannot and must not pretend that things can continue as they are".
"We believe we are experiencing a new trend in the threat we face as terrorism breeds terrorism," she said.
Mrs May said the UK's counter-terrorism strategy would be reviewed, as she promised to step up efforts to combat Islamist ideology and work with other countries to prevent the internet being a "safe space" for terrorists.
She said there was "too much tolerance of extremism in our country" and while it would involve "some difficult and embarrassing conversations", that must change. [...] Some analysts see this as a last desperate bid by IS to its supporters, following multiple setbacks in the Middle East where its self-proclaimed caliphate is shrinking fast. However, the ideology of IS is likely to survive those defeats and will continue to fuel terrorist attacks around the world. [...] With three attacks in close proximity, terrorism against soft targets is beginning to feel, to some people, like the new normal.
The brutal reality is that this kind of threat is absolutely typical of what jihadists sought to achieve in all their attacks across Europe.

Torture victims in high court challenge to Home Office over detentions | Law | The Guardian
Seven victims of torture who have been locked up in immigration detention are at the high court, challenging as unlawful a government policy that allows some torture survivors to be imprisoned.

The seven, who include victims of trafficking, a man kidnapped by the Taliban, and two men tortured because of their sexuality, say the government should no longer be able to routinely incarcerate people who have experienced persecution. The charity Medical Justice, which works to improve the health of immigration detainees, is also part of the judicial review challenge.

Trump signs new travel ban directive - BBC News
Donald Trump has, at last, unveiled his new immigration order, and it looks like government lawyers - and not just White House political operatives like Steve Bannon and Stephen Miller - have had their input.
Gone are the most controversial measures of the old order, such as preference for Christian refugees and the suspension of existing visas and green cards.
The details of the action's implementation are outlined with greater clarity this time, with more than a week before the new rules kick in.

Britain is one of worst places in western Europe for asylum seekers | UK news | The Guardian
Britain is one of the worst destinations for people seeking asylum in western Europe, according to a Guardian analysis of policies, data and reports of the conditions faced by the record recent influx of new arrivals.

At the start of a year-long project with three other newspapers on Europe’s refugee crisis, the Guardian has analysed the experience of refugees and asylum seekers in the European Union’s big five nations – the UK, Germany, France, Spain and Italy – and found the conditions in Britain do not compare well.
Only Italy, on the frontline of hundreds of thousands of people crossing the Mediterranean, fares worse. &! https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2017/mar/01/how-britain-hard-stance-refugees-reshaping-european-policy

The United States and China will fight a war within the next 10 years over islands in the South China Sea, and “there’s no doubt about that”. At the same time, the US will be in another “major” war in the Middle East.

It's Time To Stop Apologizing For Tina Fey - BuzzFeed News
[ more entertainment, don't make people think, don't try to make them think ... in cinema people uhhhmmmming ] But good books do not always make good movies — especially since the transformation from book to screen, at least in Hollywood’s hands, generally subtracts instead of adds nuance. [...] The most successful films are documentaries, which don’t face the inherent problem of casting actors, and white actors in particular, to play “bad guys” of different races, and high farces: films like Dr. Strangelove, M*A*S*H, and In the Loop that expand and eviscerate the inherent, if hidden, ridiculousness of modern war. [...] [ film has only ] cheap tricks, not the lacerating humor of effective farce. [...] women’s place in society, and sexual desirability as an alternately empowering and infantilizing experience. [...] The film dodges that idea, however, in favor of pitting Robbie’s character — who was created specifically for the purposes of the film — as Fey’s “competition.”

Migrants break down Macedonia fence on Greek border - BBC News
Macedonian police have fired tear gas at a crowd of migrants who destroyed a barbed-wire fence on the Greek border using a makeshift battering ram. [...] [ From Commentary: ] But part of the EU's problem is that events on the ground are moving faster than the policies are being implemented. [ Defining moment of Europe. History. And Europe is failing the world. The people of Europe, are failing the world. ] [...] Individual countries like Sweden, Denmark and Belgium have broken ranks and imposed their own border checks. Others have failed to take in refugees. Angela Merkel pointed her finger squarely at Austria, saying its decision to accept just 80 refugees a day had led to today's problems in Greece. Europe's leaders have a chance to restore some unity at another crisis summit in a week's time. But it may be events on Greece's borders that dictate what happens.

Syria refugee crisis: six charts that show how Europe is struggling to respond | World news | The Guardian
Of the 1.2 million asylum applications filed, 356,805 were from Syrian applicants. The number of first-time applicants has grown hugely in the past five years. The increase in the number of people seeking asylum in Europe has been driven primarily by applications from Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq. [...] In Germany, one of the few EU countries to have reported full-year figures for 2015, there were almost 442,000 first-time asylum applications in 2015 alone: over a third of these by Syrians. Going through paperwork takes time, though; the country registered 428,468 Syrian arrivals last year. As a proportion of population, the most applications have been received in Hungary (649 applications per 100,000 population), Sweden (528 per 100,000 population) and Austria (where there were 273 applications per 100,000 population up to the end of November). //&! bit.ly/1o5FdLQ // Cameron Pays Up to keep them away and voters happy - bit.ly/1R3rJf5 &! bit.ly/1Kr9kqZ

VIDEO: ‘Days of Revolt’ With Chris Hedges: ISIS, the New Israel - Truthdig
https://youtu.be/Go5vYcrwlOM // Hedges begins by pointing out how the Sykes-Picot agreement of 1916, responsible for “carving up the Middle East and turning countries into protectorates,” has been changed only twice—once with the Israeli independence and now with Islamic State. As Hedges put it, the tactics used to redraw the map in the Middle East are both effective and familiar, including the “use of foreign money, use of foreign fighters, tactics of ethnic cleansing and terrorism and this mythical vision—in the case of Israel, the recreation of Judea and Sumeria from the Bible, and in the case of ISIS, the recreation of the seventh-century caliphate.” Alnasseri agrees, opening his response with the observation that “to understand the pheonomenon of ISIS, we need to contextualize it within the setbacks and counter-revolution against the Arab revolutions.“ [...] 'Iraq can not be re-united.'

Syria crisis: Russia begins air strikes against Assad foes - BBC News
Russia has begun carrying out air strikes in Syria against opponents of President Bashar al-Assad, Moscow has confirmed. The strikes reportedly came in the rebel-controlled area of Hama province. Washington was informed in advance that they were about to take place. Syria's civil war has raged for four years, with armed groups - some of them Islamist, including the Islamic State (IS) group - fighting to overthrow the government. The US and its allies have insisted that President Assad should leave office, while Russia has backed its ally remaining in power. The latest developments came amid reports that President Assad had formally requested Russian military support. //&! So Wrong for So Long | Foreign Policy
[T]heir earlier support for the Iraq War and their opposition to the Iran deal stem from the basic neoconservative worldview that informs their entire approach to foreign policy. [...] To be more specific, the problem isn’t that these people just happened to be embarrassingly wrong about Iraq. After all, plenty of other people were equally misguided back then, including many people who now support the deal today. Nor is the problem the neocons’ stubborn and morally dubious refusal to admit they were wrong and take responsibility for the lives and money they squandered. No, the real problem is that the neoconservative worldview — one that still informs the thinking of many of the groups and individuals who are most vocal in opposing the Iran deal — is fundamentally flawed. [...] they think weaker states are easy to bully and never stand up to powerful adversaries. ...

Today's Uncertain Future Calls For Observation and Patience, Not Boldness and Strategy | BillMoyers.com
Not one of the signature foreign policy initiatives conceived in Obama’s first term has borne fruit. When it came to making a fresh start with the Islamic world, responsibly ending the “dumb” war in Iraq (while winning the “necessary” one in Afghanistan), “resetting” US-Russian relations, and “pivoting” toward Asia, mark your scorecard zero for four. There’s no doubt that when Kerry arrived at the State Department he brought with him some much-needed energy. That he is giving it his all — the department’s website reports that the secretary has already clocked over 682,000 miles of travel — is doubtless true as well. The problem is the absence of results. Remember when his signature initiative was going to be an Israeli-Palestinian peace deal? Sadly, that quixotic plan, too, has come to naught.
