Brexit may leave holes in UK equality laws · PinkNews
The report comes after former Minister for Women and Equalities Nicky Morgan warned that leaving the EU may cause a ‘legal tangle’ for equality legislation.
She said: “I would think that LGBT rights are so mainstream and respected by the majority of people in this country that that wouldn’t happen.
“But one of the things that hasn’t really been explored is the legal tangle that will result if we were to leave the EU. Some of the anti-discrimination provisions that come from the EU, that we have adopted into UK law… what happens to those?”

LGBT people need straight allies to lend a helping hand | Matthew Todd | Opinion | The Guardian
This week, hundreds of heterosexual Dutch men held hands to show solidarity with the victims of a homophobic attack. Such actions are vital to progress [...] Today we drastically need straight people to speak up about the situation in schools. School bullying and isolation is where the higher levels of anxiety, depression, suicide ideation and addiction that LGBT people statistically have, begins.

Sarah Champion: Brexit is a crucial moment in our nation’s history – so let’s use it to be ambitious on equalities | LabourList
Given that equality is so central to EU law, and given the emphasis that has been placed by the prime minister on equality since her speech outside No 10 when she first entered Downing Street, it came as a surprise to me that the word “equality” does not appear once in the government’s white paper.

There is a brief mention of women’s rights in relation to maternity leave, but no mention of race, disability or sexuality and gender identity.

This cannot be credibly perceived as a deal that works for everyone in Britain if women, BAME, disabled people and LGBT communities aren’t even referenced in the white paper.

Inquiry launched into UK gender laws amid fears over Brexit effect | World news | The Guardian
[ one particular NHS already breaking EU overtime work directive ] Areas of equality law to be examined include measures to guarantee equal pay, protection for part-time workers and during pregnancy, and combating so-called intersectional discrimination, where someone faces potential disadvantage for not just their gender but another area, for example race or religion. [...] While the government had promised to protect equality and the rights of workers following departure from the EU, Smethers said, the concern was that some protections could be lost almost inadvertently amid wider changes. [...] “The real worry we’ve got is that those kind of assurances are actually quite superficial, and they are probably a second order commitment compared to the need to secure a competitive economy, and how we compete if we’re outside the trading bloc,” Smethers said. &! documents obtained under freedom of information showed a risk of fraudulent activity and cyberattacks. [...] It was finally disclosed this month by the department after a freedom of information request by John Slater, a former IT project manager, and Tony Collins, an investigative journalist, following a four-year legal battle. They also raise concerns that the programme lacks a “robust framework of assurances”, which means “rework” may be needed if elements of the project are “not fit for purpose”. Fears over staffing are described, with concerns over “skilled staff resources not in the right place at the right time”. Redaction error reveals FBI did target Lavabit to spy on Edward Snowden
A redaction oversight by the US government has finally confirmed that the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s targeting of secure email service Lavabit was used specifically to spy on Edward Snowden.

Ladar Levison, creator of the email service, which was founded on a basis of private communications secured by encryption and had 410,000 users, was served a sealed order in 2013 forcing him to aid the FBI in its surveillance of Snowden.

Levison was ordered to install a surveillance package on his company’s servers and later to turn over Lavabit’s encryption keys so that it would give the FBI the ability to read the most secure messages that the company offered. He was also ordered not to disclose the fact to third-parties.

Twenty Faslane workers exposed to radiation - BBC News
Twenty workers at the Faslane nuclear submarine base were exposed to radiation due to safety errors, newly-released documents have revealed. The engineers were repairing a leaking tank on a Trident submarine while a nearby nuclear reactor was operated. Details of the incident, in August 2012, at the Clyde site emerged after Freedom of Information (FOI) requests by an anti-nuclear group. The Ministry of Defence said no-one was harmed and safety had been improved. [...] The MoD report has been heavily redacted and does not reveal the level of radiation each worker was exposed to.

Freedom of Information charges ruled out after review - BBC News
'Deep suspicion' The government has chosen not to legislate to shore up ministers' powers to veto the release of information. BBC political correspondent Ross Hawkins says campaigners, opposition politicians and many journalists regarded the independent review of FOI legislation with deep suspicion, concerned the government wanted to curtail a law that allowed them to reveal embarrassing facts about its failings. Some regular users of the law remain anxious about whether it will be easier for institutions to rule that information requests are too burdensome to be met, he says.

EU referendum: Hammond defends rules on access to papers - BBC News
Five cabinet ministers and a minister who attends cabinet are campaigning for Brexit Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond has defended plans to prevent ministers who oppose EU membership from seeing certain government documents. He said the government, which backs EU membership, was not neutral and those who disagreed could draw on specific policy information from other sources. MPs are to question the UK's top civil servant after he issued guidance to withhold "referendum-related" material. One anti-EU minister said retaining documents "can't possibly happen". The government's official policy is that Britain should remain in the EU - and civil servants are duty-bound to support government policies. Hunt 'misrepresented' data on 7-day NHS - BBC News
The Labour leader attacked Jeremy Hunt after the BBC revealed the health secretary used academically unverified and unpublished data to back his plans. Last July, in the pay row with junior doctors, Mr Hunt said there were about 6,000 deaths a year because of the lack of "a proper seven-day service". But this assertion was later questioned by academics. Emails show one of the author's of the unpublished paper, which Mr Hunt was using to justify the 6,000 figure, was unhappy with how his study was being used. Can we really trust judges to protect reporters' confidential sources? | Media | The Guardian
Journalists won’t even be safe to talk email whistleblowers from a coffee shop [...] In stressing that the powers would not be used for mass surveillance, May said the onus would be on the home office to show necessity and proportionality. And who would decide whether that was justified? Judicial commissioners, she said. They would operate a “double-lock” authorisation process on intercept and bulk interception warrants in order to prevent intrusive snooping. [ old boys club with career interests? titles, pensions? ] But will this judicial oversight provide enough protection? That’s the key worry for journalists who now know that there is nowhere for them to conceal their communications with confidential sources. English GP surgeries reach new patient 'breaking point' - BBC News
Large numbers of GP surgeries in England have stopped taking on new patients or have applied to do so, a BBC investigation has found. The British Medical Association (BMA) says many are at "breaking point" as they struggle to fill staff vacancies. At least 100 surgeries applied to NHS England to stop accepting new patients in 2014/15, a Freedom of Information request revealed. NHS England said it was investing £15m to boost the workforce. At the beginning of November, 299 surgeries were indicating on the NHS Choices website - which provides patients with information about surgeries in their local area - that they were not taking on new patients. [...] Analysis of the Freedom of Information data suggests about 46% of the 100 surgeries which applied in 2014/15 were denied permission, or withdrew the request. NHS England says practices will seek approval before closing their lists to new patients.

Even Tory MPs are troubled by their party’s power grab
Since their victory, the Conservatives have introduced a battery of measures to weaken the opposition and reduce accountability. [...] It is not only within parliament that the government is seeking to limit accountability. Ministers are expected to weaken the Freedom of Information Act by introducing new exemptions and charging for requests. “I’m unsurprised that both [Tony] Blair and this government viewed it as an inconvenience,” Davis told me. “The trouble is, they’re forgetting who their bosses are.” The Lobbying Act, or “gagging bill”, has reduced the maximum amount that voluntary groups and trade unions can spend on political campaigning in the period before a general election by 60 per cent.

Disabled students fear loss of essential support - BBC News
[ easy thing to move double digit spend off balance sheet onto someone else's - Career Politicians trick ] "Disabled students should be allowed equal opportunities to non-disabled students and to put it bluntly, the cuts to DSA limit our futures. "Having discussed the cuts to DSA with deaf and other disabled students I have seen a trend in a loss of hope. These students, myself included, feel disregarded by the government and our access to higher education has been unjustly restricted." [...] The National Union of Students fears small, specialised institutions will struggle to meet the costs. Disabled students' officer Maddy Kirkman said the changes risked inconsistency in support and complained the government had ignored these concerns. [...] The Green party said the changes amounted to a £70m cut to support for disabled students. Marijuana legalization initiative fails in Ohio - Business Insider
Issue 3 would create a marijuana "monopoly" (actually, an oligopoly) consisting of 10 producers who would have their exclusive rights to engage in the commercial production of marijuana enshrined in the state constitution. The campaign in support of Issue 3 — so-called Responsible Ohio — is predictably supported by those who would hold these exclusive rights. This is crony capitalism at its worst. // same w GMO, Monsanto asked whitehouse (bush) to introduce stringent legislation and regulation about GMO research bc monanto knew it was ahead and didn't want any newcomers in, thus made through legislation, regulation and compliance cost, the barriers to entry artificially high, through its effective strong lobbying to introduce legislation & regulation to its liking.

Volkswagen Congress Hearing: Emissions scandal - watch live - YouTube
VW USA subsidiary CEO Michael Horn. // 'VW the people's car.' 36:40 - I had no understanding what a defeat device is & that it could be installed to cheat emission tests. [<< Symptom of being a conglomerate! Corporate Culture & Values.] min 38:09 - Is hardware, software & even has to do something with the fuel tank. In some models (gen 2) its just software & a sensor. // 49:20 - framing of the answer with EPA (influenced?), cars on the road right now, even they are not passing emissions test, "are legal & safe to drive for the owners." // min 57 NOx, air pollution. 'compensation will be part of discussion'. 40 times than allowable limit. // 1:11:00 - according to him, @ the current state of investigations, this was out of the engine-drivetrain-engineering/software/emissions department within VW. Was not a corporate executive decision from the top. [My 2 cents: more likely decision was made within those departments due to pressure from top to make the test pass happen. << 1:51:00]

The disabled and jobless need help, not harassment | Barbara Ellen | Comment is free | The Guardian
No one wants to stop disabled people working, to patronise or stereotype them, or condemn them to a life in the shadows. However, helping disabled people back into employment should be just about that – helping them. Instead, we’re left with a flimsy cover for herding and bullying highly vulnerable people out of the benefits system. //&! bit.ly/1MncLfD - Report on death of Michael O’Sullivan blames work capability assessment and warns of risk of more such deaths unless DWP takes action [...] this is believed to be the first time the work capability assessment (WCA) process has been blamed directly for a death. [...] In its 16-page response to the coroner’s report, the DWP admitted it had got it wrong. It said its policy to request further evidence when a claimant mentions suicide on claim forms was “regrettably not followed in this case”. //&! bit.ly/1Mfcmfd //&! bit.ly/1V6O0vz

In the loop August 28: Google, Brexit lobby and Uber's expansion by POLITICO Europe
[My take, for EU to thrive, it needs 2 develop & integrate further the 6 killer apps of western nations history, but they dont do that. quite the opposite especially under pressure situations (refugee crisis response: bit.ly/1KkArk5 Merkel 'this is EU wide problem, not just Germanys') & that is very much something that speaks 4 Brexit as UK has 2 give up further powers & further struggle 2 be just a prosthetics (not even appendage like science can grow an ear on someones arm) 2 Europe, which gives other countries internal nationalism leverage 2 put barriers in way of really putting Europe on the map of the "world economy," developing/advancing the 6 killer apps 4 Europe. Brexit will be part of Merkel's legacy! Verwalten of status quo. No principles. No vision. No mission. No future.] bit.ly/1FW3Qgi // European integration itself is a Moonshot project & it looks like that crisis management leading to political crisis, doesnt help at all putting the rocket together in the first place.

Nice try, David Cameron, but sickness can't just be rebranded into unemployment
[nasty party. no representation 4 sick, vulnerable *disabled. minority of society. dont cut @ur constituency; babyboomers, middle class, pensioners, Establishment, Privileged, corp, tax avoiders, oligarchs, ... ] IDS can talk of supporting people in their returns to employment, but the system his department has created is anything but supportive. It is frightening, punitive and messy. If we really want to support people to get better both through work and in order to work, ESA should be in the care of the Department of Health, not Work and Pensions. Illness and disability are not matters of employment, but of health. We have created a society where we can only see disabled people as non-functioning economic units, at the expense of their wellbeing. We cannot rename benefits to hide ill and disabled people. We cannot be rebranded into unsuitable work. // &! bbc.in/1Nr2phT - "Based on the fact we are seen as 'disabled' infers we are not as able as the majority,"
