Nostalgia
“I mean, Trump’s all about ‘make America great again’. It’s this idea that this American exceptionalism will never die. And it has to die,” he says. He looks out of his window once more, over a neighbourhood partly buried under the glass, steel and concrete of the gentrifiers.

“It has to die because it’s killing us.”

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Crusher of Sacred Cows – Rolling Stone
With its silly swipes at AOC, the American political establishment is once again revealing its blindness to its own unpopularity [...] The mortification on the Republican side has come more from media figures than actual elected officials. Still, there are plenty of people like Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) doing things like denouncing “this girl, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, whatever she is” for preaching “socialism wrapped in ignorance.” A group of GOP House members booed her on the floor, to which she replied, “Don’t hate me cause you ain’t me, fellas.” [...] The latter issue, of course, is the real problem most of Washington has with “AOC”: her self-generated popularity and large social media presence means she doesn’t need to ask anyone’s permission to say anything. [...] She doesn’t have to run things by donors and she doesn’t need the assent of thinkfluencers like Cillizza or Max Boot (who similarly compared her to both Trump and Sarah Palin), because she almost certainly gains popularity every time one of those nitwits takes a swipe at her.

Kenneth Olisa: ‘To improve social mobility, we need to raise children’s aspirations’ | Society | The Guardian
https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2018/sep/18/rich-britons-inequality-poverty-social-wealth - As the rich get richer, why don’t British people care about inequality? - The solution is to invest in social wealth - The danger is that the paradox of wealth inequality becomes self-reinforcing: as wealth at the top increases, the likelihood of redistributive reform decreases. The reason is that high levels of wealth inequality bias the democratic process. Martin Gilens has documented definitively the “elite economic domination” of American politics. But similar concerns about the unequal influence of the new aristocracy have been raised in Britain.

Back to the future on inflation
[ no rising demand = no inflation ] Globalisation and the march of technology have strengthened the hand of employers and weakened that of workers. So it is no surprise that though unemployment has relentlessly fallen, wage growth remains in the doldrums.

Then there is the war between generations. As the baby boomers approached retirement, they sought to safeguard their wealth. Inflation-targeting central banks, the dismantling of the welfare state and fiscal austerity were the natural results. The modern macroeconomic constitution has disenfranchised the inflationary constituency of the young. &! https://www.project-syndicate.org/commentary/tax-cuts-for-the-rich-solve-nothing-by-joseph-e--stiglitz-2017-07

Employment tribunal fees unlawful, Supreme Court rules - BBC News
Fees for those bringing employment tribunal claims have been ruled unlawful, and the government will now have to repay up to £32m to claimants.
The government introduced fees of up to £1,200 in 2013 to reduce the number of malicious and weak cases, but that led to a 79% reduction over three years.
Trade union Unison argued the fees prevented workers accessing justice.
The Ministry of Justice said the government would take immediate steps to stop charging and refund payments.
The Supreme Court ruled the government was acting unlawfully and unconstitutionally when it introduced the fees.

Tax evaders exposed: why the super-rich are even richer than we thought | Inequality | The Guardian
The higher one moves up the wealth distribution, the higher the probability of hiding assets [...] More broadly, the key to successfully fighting tax evasion is to change the incentives for the providers of wealth concealment services. Over the last few years, a number of banks have pleaded guilty in the US to criminal conspiracies to defraud the Internal Revenue Service – yet they were able to keep their banking licences, and the fines they had to pay paled in comparison to their profits. A more ambitious approach would put criminal organisations out of business. If tax evasion ceases to pay, it will disappear.

Donald Trump, Marine Le Pen: Wie Wirtschaftskrisen Populisten helfen - Kolumne - SPIEGEL ONLINE

More than half of donations to EU referendum campaigns came from just ten wealthy donors | The Independent
In its report Take back Control: How big money undermines trust in politics, the campaign group found that of the £31,834,885 donated to both sides during the referendum, £16, 444, 905 – about 52 per cent – came from just 10 individuals or companies. [...] Leave received £17.5 million of all donations - almost exactly one vote for every pound given towards the Brexit campaign - compared to Remain’s £14.2 million.

Transparency International also found that 95 per cent of all money raised during the referendum campaign came from just 100 donors – a tiny fraction of the millions who voted on June 23.

Winner: very rich Americans
The AHCA would amount to a huge tax cut for the wealthiest Americans by rolling back key taxes included in Obamacare. Labour to oppose 'Henry VIII powers' being used to rewrite EU laws | Politics | The Guardian
[ no moderation, moderation is gone. Global Britain is here. 'indyref2 wil happen one way or another. no opposition and no say will infuriate Scots even more eventually ] It is expected that this will involve extensive use of “Henry VIII powers” – laws allowing ministers to change primary legislation (government bills) using secondary legislation (orders that go through parliament with little or no scrutiny). [...] Corbyn said Labour would oppose handing ministers such extensive powers when the House of Commons votes on the great repeal bill. Here's Why A Slowdown In Earnings For The Top 1% Is A Problem For The UK - BuzzFeed News
“Fifteen years without a pay rise,” IFS director Paul Johnson said. “I’m rather lost for superlatives. More than politics, Theresa May’s true strength is her grasp of British culture | Rafael Behr | Opinion | The Guardian
While John Major and Tony Blair struggle with their Brexit defeat, the prime minister has read the national mood and is successfully navigating it // SHE IS NAVIGATING IT? OTHERS WOULD SAY like Blair SHE SITS THERE AS PASSENGER. // Culture and identity tend to be treated as peripheral expressions of whatever is happening in the economy, which is sometimes true but not always. May understands that. She is a more astute culture warrior than economist, and for now that is serving her well. // HAPPY TO DO HARD BREXIT EVEN IF IT HURTS THE ECONOMY "make the best of it" // To win power from New Labour, Cameron adapted to Blairish mode: self-consciously modern, socially liberal, metropolitan and relaxed about Europe. [...] There was always something absurd about “anti-establishment” language in the plummy tones of Boris Johnson or Nigel Farage. But their campaign did capture a rebellious spirit. Partly it was generalised frustration at the state of everything; partly it was counter-revolution – the backlash by people who sensed that their lives, interests and anxieties were the punchline to a joke at a fancy London dinner party. [...] liberals haven’t grasped the scale of their defeat. That is good for May, who navigates through the middle.

Austerity was a bigger disaster than we thought - The Washington Post
That, at least, is what economists Christopher House and Linda Tesar of the University of Michigan and Christïan Proebsting of the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne found when they looked at Europe's budget-cutting experience the last eight years. It turns out that cutting spending right after the worst crisis in 80 years only led to a lower gross domestic product and, in the most extreme cases, higher debt-to-GDP ratios. That's right: trying to reduce debt levels sometimes increased debt burdens. [...] In short, austerity hurt what it was supposed to help, and helped hurt the economy even more than a once-in-three-generations crisis already had.
