The Guardian view on the criminal courts charge: unjust, ineffective and mean-spirited | Editorial | Comment is free | The Guardian
The consequences have been entirely predictable – and quite possibly intentional. Breadline defendants are choosing to plead guilty and pay the £150 rather than run the risk of an even higher charge by pleading not guilty. Not surprisingly, and rightly, lawyers and reformers are incensed. The Law Society and the Bar Council, plus lobby groups like the Howard League for Penal Reform, say that defendants are pleading guilty even when they are innocent. Dozens of magistrates across England have resigned rather than participate in the system, including one who was initially suspended for offering to pay a destitute defendant’s charge himself. Last month in New Zealand, the current lord chief justice, Lord Thomas, said that the new charges were “imperilling” Magna Carta rights of access to justice.

Antarctic ice sheets face catastrophic collapse without deep emissions cuts | Environment | The Guardian
[ emotionally, people are not there to change ] [S]teep cuts to emissions during the next decade are the only way to avoid a catastrophic collapse of Antarctic ice sheets and associated sea-level rise that will continue for thousands of years. [...] This would trigger a collapse that would go on for thousands of years, raising sea levels by 0.6 metres to 3 metres by the year 2300 depending on how high manmade greenhouse gas emissions remain. Our descendants living in the year 5000 will continue to suffer the consequences of today’s fossil fuel burning, as sea levels continue to rise up to nine metres above current levels. [...] The global sea level has risen roughly 20cm over the last century and is already causing problems for communities in low-lying areas. Only a little of this has so far been caused by melting ice; most comes from the expansion of oceans as they warm. [...] Antarctica’s two ice sheets, east and west, cover an area the size of the contiguous US and Mexico combined

Working-class Americans feel screwed. I heard it across the entire country | US news | The Guardian
Donald Trump has exposed the opportunity gulf between those who make policy and those who live it – turning immigrants into scapegoats in the process [...] The disappointment, although often wrapped in anger over immigration, is at its core about diminished opportunity. It is consistent with the economic reality that has persisted over the last three decades: except for the very rich, Americans haven’t seen their wealth increase. The people I talked to are not entirely wrong; their particular job prospects and their particular wealth have been harmed. [...] The angry are mostly people who work with their hands, who feel stuck in a vise tightening from two sides: there is a greater number of people looking for the same jobs and there are fewer jobs available, since many of these jobs having moved overseas.

BBC One - Panorama, Tough Justice in Britain - Texas Style
As the UK's imprisonment rate remains the highest in western Europe, Panorama joins Michael Gove - the man in charge of British prisons - on a fact-finding mission in Texas. 'Hang 'em high' Texas is not the first place you might look for lessons in criminal justice - they execute more people and lock up more offenders than anywhere else in America. But now this conservative state is the unlikely centre of a rehabilitation-led revolution in prison reform that's sweeping through the US. Crime is down, prisoner numbers have fallen and, on top of this, they have cut costs. Are there valuable lessons to be learned here, and are UK politicians really ready to dole out some Texan justice?

Britain's water crisis | Nick Davies | Environment | The Guardian
The immediate cause of the early drying out at the source of the Ouse was simply that there was not enough water in the underground aquifer on which it feeds. But that turns out to be part of something bigger. In March 2013, the local branch of the Environment Agency reported that, depending on conditions, there are now years when they can extract water from the Ouse on no more than 94 days. For the rest of the year, abstractors can use water that has been stored during the wet months in the big reservoir at Ardingly, and they can pump up water through boreholes sunk into the underground aquifers. This in turn reduces the amount of water that bubbles up into the river and its tributaries. The Environment Agency has stopped issuing new abstraction licences for the river. Meanwhile, during the summer months, nearly half of what we like to describe as a river is, in fact, recycled waste water and sewage. [...] [south-east and south] “serious water stress”

Saudi Arabia will need deep pockets if it is to win its oil war with US | Larry Elliott | World news | The Guardian
Riyadh’s plan to raise $27bn from bond sales is a sign that its economic battle with United States is taking its toll [...] Saudi Arabia is an expensive country to run for the House of Saud. Fearful of Iran, it has imported the latest military kit to show that it is the Middle East’s regional superpower. Higher defence spending has also been needed to fund action in Yemen and to counter the threat from Islamic State. In addition, Saudi Arabia has an unemployment problem that it fears may become a social unrest problem. Two-thirds of the population is under 30 and the unemployment rate for the 16-29 age group is 29%. [...] [IMF] estimates that Saudi Arabia is on course to run a budget deficit of 20% of national income this year. [...] oil accounts for almost 90% of Saudi Arabia’s revenues, [...] Saudis are now embroiled in a long – and expensive – war of attrition. And one they may not win. // &! /bbc.in/1gmHu0V

GSK investigator warns over China - BBC News
A British corporate investigator who was jailed in Shanghai in relation to a massive corruption case against British pharmaceuticals giant GlaxoSmithKline has told the BBC he was shocked that he and his wife received a custodial sentence, while senior GSK staff convicted of more serious charges did not. At the time the company did however pay fines of around $500m. In an exclusive interview, Peter Humphrey also told the BBC's China Editor Carrie Gracie that the British government must educate companies to the risks they face in China.

Royal Dutch Shell to buy BG Group in £47bn deal - BBC News
Defensive merger? The deal comes at a time of uncertainty for oil and gas companies. In the past six months the price of oil has fallen by about 50%. Meanwhile, analysts have warned that investment in North Sea oil exploration has all but dried up, threatening the entire industry. Last month, the Chancellor, George Osborne, lowered the supplementary corporation tax levied against oil companies that operate in the North Sea. BG Group warned in February that it would write down the value of its oil and gas assets by nearly £6bn ($9bn) due to the oil price slump. Similarly, Shell announced in January that it would be cutting spending by nearly £10bn over the next three years. As it announced the takeover bid, Shell said it expected to make asset sales totalling $30bn between 2016 and 2018, although it did not specify which assets it was reviewing for sale. - never let a crisis go to waste - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-32217624

Using background checks on construction workers to discriminate against those charged with or convicted of felonies is reportedly very rare in the construction industry, one of the industries that provide opportunities for ex-convicts to get back on their feet in life. Discrimination against ex-offenders is a major ongoing problem that exacerbates poverty, inequality and racism; in an incarceration-mad state like California, Apple’s policy imposed on construction companies it hires means worsening inequality and cycles of poverty for a problem that disproportionately affects people of color. In 2012, the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission announced a new crackdown on illegal employment discrimination against people with criminal records, which are only permitted depending on the nature of the job. Robert Reich - This mornings New York Times has an oped from Roger...
The deal would strengthen American-based global corporations, to be sure, but those corporations don’t represent the interests of the United States and won’t counterbalance China. They represent the interests of their shareholders. When maximizing profits has required cozying up to China, they’ve done whatever China wants. Here’s how reporters are reacting to Snowden’s revelations | PandoDaily
The global surveillance programs revealed by Edward Snowden have caused journalists to change how they operate, question what the government knows about them, and consider abandoning investigative reporting, according to a survey from the Pew Research Center. A significant number of the journalists surveyed said they had changed their behavior, whether it’s how they store sensitive files (49 percent), how they communicate with other journalists (29 percent), whether they’ve reached out to a source (13 percent), or pursued a specific story (2 percent). Many are also convinced the government is gathering information about them. Some 64 percent of journalists believed intelligence agencies had “probably collected data” about them. (The other 36 percent, as “InfoSec Taylor Swift” joked, must not read the news.)

[Bullying move and Example Case. The following is an excerpt from Michelle Alexander’s book The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness. - "Today it is perfectly legal to discriminate against criminals in nearly all the ways that it was once legal to discriminate against African-Americans. Once you’re labeled a felon, the old forms of discrimination— employment discrimination, housing discrimination, denial of the right to vote, denial of educational opportunity, denial of food stamps and other public benefits and exclusion from jury service — are suddenly legal. ...We have not ended racial caste in America; we have merely redesigned it." - Michelle Alexander

BBC News - MI5, MI6 and GCHQ 'spied on lawyers'
[P]olicies allowing staff to access confidential communications between lawyers and their clients, official documents have revealed. [...] An MI5 document said legally privileged material may be used "just like any other item of intelligence". [...] Families involved with the Belhaj case brought a claim to the IPT over concerns that their private discussions with legal charity Reprieve and law firm Leigh Day were being intercepted. The families have brought litigation about the kidnappings and allege that any interception of privileged communications has infringed their right to a fair trial. [...] "We hope the tribunal will tell the government in no uncertain terms that this conduct is completely unacceptable." America Must End Its Paranoid War on Hackers | WIRED
"Our privileged attorney-client communications were routinely and illegally opened by the prison; when weev was interrogated by the FBI (while being denied an attorney) about one of his communications to me and complained about his privileged attorney-client mail being opened, one of the FBI agents told him that they “didn’t give a fuck about the attorney client privilege.” Unfortunately, this attitude is typical of many FBI agents; generally they believe they are above the law they are entrusted to enforce. BBC News - 'Deeply elitist UK locks out diversity at top'
http://bit.ly/1lubeuO - The interests of those who dominate British society are disparate; indeed, they often conflict with one another. The establishment includes politicians who make laws; media barons who set the terms of debate; businesses and financiers who run the economy; police forces that enforce a law that is rigged in favour of the powerful. The establishment is where these interests and worlds intersect, either consciously or unconsciously. It is unified by a common mentality, which holds that those at the top deserve their power and their ever-growing fortunes, and which might be summed up by the advertising slogan "Because I'm worth it". This is the mentality that has driven politicians to pilfer expenses, businesses to avoid tax, and City bankers to demand ever greater bonuses while plunging the world into economic disaster. All of these things are facilitated – even encouraged – by laws that are geared to cracking down on the smallest of misdemeanours committed ...

You’re 16. You’re a Pedophile. You Don’t Want to Hurt Anyone. What Do You Do Now? — Matter — Medium
Elizabeth Letourneau, founding director of the Moore Center for the Prevention of Child Sexual Abuse at Johns Hopkins University, told me. “A lot of these guys don’t want to be sexually abusing children.” We first met at her office one dreary afternoon last February. Out the window, whose sill was flanked by framed photos of her two sons, you could see rain gently blanketing downtown Baltimore. The center’s core mission is “to try to change the way the nation views child sexual abuse, as something that is preventable.” From a desk piled high with books and manila folders full of journal articles, she continued: “We say we’re really concerned about sex offending and we really don’t want children to be sexually offended and we don’t want adults to be raped, but we don’t do anything to prevent it. We put most of our energy into criminal justice, which means that the offense has already happened and often many offenses have already happened.” - via http://bit.ly/1kxvM4S

AirBnB is the ebay for places and experiences. Sharing is caring - you space. This kindness to open up you personal space to strangers ... magical moments can happen. Stories are written. Lives are changed. Still there is the 80/20 - there will always be bad eggs, say bad customers. And because national travel is vry affordable and people want to escape their walls on the weekend if they could afford and its users use it for niche items/services >> providing accommodation for events. Staying in someones place is very different than a hotel. a hotel is generic. every AirBnB is different. It is an experience. not only might you experience a new city, but you also experience someones life, how he or she or they live. Their view. Plus - this is the time of the Airbnb - experience services - because millennials favour experiences of commoditised consumer goods. and babyboomers want that cake too because of the youthification trend. only retrospective u see the pieces of the puzzle.

n the past three decades, says Michael Sandel, the US has drifted from a market economy to a market society; it's fair to say that an American's experience of shared civic life depends on how much money they have.
