Useful Stats: Distribution of R&D performance by state - SSTI
Nearly three-quarters of all research and development was performed by the private sector in fiscal year 2016, though this share differed greatly across the states, according to an SSTI analysis of recently released data from the National Science Foundation’s National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics (NSF NCSES). Delaware showed the greatest concentration of business R&D (90.5 percent of all R&D in the state), while Tennessee had the most diversified R&D portfolio with a roughly even distribution of R&D performed by businesses, higher education and federally funded R&D centers (FFRDC’s). The interactive chart below shows the breakdown of performers of research and development for each state.

In addition to national Startup Activity trends, the Startup Index looks at activity in all 50 states and the 40 largest U.S. metropolitan areas.

Among the largest states, these five had the highest startup activity in 2017: California, Texas, Florida, Arizona and Colorado.

Among the 25 smaller states, these five had the highest startup activity in 2017: Oklahoma, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Nevada.

The five metropolitan areas with the highest startup activity were, in order: Miami, Austin, Los Angeles, San Diego and Las Vegas.

State looks to take advantage of ‘reshoring’ trend - Connecticut Post
After decades where changes in manufacturing employment were characterized by offshoring, the current trend is toward “reshoring,” according to a report by location consultants The Boyd Co. of Princeton, N.J., which shows Connecticut faces steep challenges in taking advantage.

Here are the Most Innovative States in America in 2016 - Bloomberg
Massachusetts stole a second straight victory in Bloomberg’s ranking of the most innovative U.S. states, a testament to how much the economy’s wheels are greased by investment in higher education and research.

California again scored just behind Massachusetts, which gained ground by churning out more science and engineering graduates and producing jobs in those industries even though it had less technology company density than in 2015, according to the data compiled by Bloomberg.

Among state rankings, Arizona jumped to first place with improvements in the state’s industry rank and operating costs, as well as high scores in property and unemployment tax. Florida dropped one rank from last year to take second place, but its Space Coast still remains a hot spot with companies developing facilities in that area. Small business activity is on the rise 38 of the top 40 largest metropolitan areas. The top five metropolitan areas for small business activity as measured by the Index were New York, Boston, Providence, San Francisco and Portland. Small business activity is on the rise in 49 of the 50 U.S. states. Innovation America: Patent Applications and Allowances by State -
Looking at raw numbers, California was by far the most inventive state, with over 329,000 non-design patents filed, over 254,000 disposed, and over 180,000 allowed between 2000 and 2010. Texas, New York, Massachusetts, and Washington rounded out the top five, but together had fewer applications, disposed applications, and allowed applications than California alone. The states with the highest allowance rates were Vermont (84%), Idaho (77%), Kansas (74%), Washington (74%) and Iowa (73%).

The Beehive State benefits from light regulation and energy costs that are 23% below the national average. Which States Have Created the Most Job Growth since the Great Recession? - Stateline - The Pew Charitable Trusts
North Dakota has led the way thanks to its oil boom. Employment there has jumped more than 28 percent since April 2009, the earliest low point of any state.

Other top performers are Texas and Utah, where employment has increased more than 15 percent since December 2009 and February 2010, respectively. Next are California and Colorado, where employment is up more than 13 percent since their lowest points in early 2010.

The state scores a solid 1,659 points out of a possible 2,500, finishing at or near the top in three categories and in the top half in all but two.
