Individuals in Science and Engineering Occupations as a Percentage of All Occupations - National Science Foundation
Policymakers and scholars consistently emphasize innovation based on S&E research and development as a vehicle for economic growth and competitiveness. In the increasingly interconnected 21st-century world, workers with S&E expertise are integral to a nation’s innovative capacity because of their high skill level, their creative ideas, and their ability not only to advance basic scientific knowledge but also to transform advances in fundamental knowledge into tangible and useful products and services.

A Map of Every Building in America - The New York Times
These images are drawn from a huge database that Microsoft released to the public this year. The company’s computer engineers trained a neural network to analyze satellite imagery and then to trace the shapes of buildings across the country. Such information has been available before in some places, but this is the first comprehensive database covering the entire United States.

Here's How America Uses Its Land - Bloomberg
There are many statistical measures that show how productive the U.S. is. Its economy is the largest in the world and grew at a rate of 4.1 percent last quarter, its fastest pace since 2014. The unemployment rate is near the lowest mark in a half century.

What can be harder to decipher is how Americans use their land to create wealth. The 48 contiguous states alone are a 1.9 billion-acre jigsaw puzzle of cities, farms, forests and pastures that Americans use to feed themselves, power their economy and extract value for business and pleasure.

Does Your State Tax Manufacturing Machinery? - Tax Foundation
Taxing inputs in a sales tax leads to “tax pyramiding.” Throughout the production cycle, the tax can be assessed multiple times. This leads to higher prices for consumers, fewer job opportunities for workers, or limits the business’s ability to expand. If too many business inputs are taxed, a state’s sales tax could actually start to function as a gross receipts tax.

This week’s map looks at just one of the many business inputs that states tax in their sales tax bases: manufacturing machinery.

Small City Economic Dynamism - Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta
Small cities are like nerve centers connecting the regional economy. They are the hearts of their respective counties and metropolitan areas as well as hubs of employment, retail, health care, and education for people living in surrounding rural areas. Many small cities are growing and attracting new investments, but unemployment, poverty, vacant buildings, and economic distress are pronounced in some small metros.

We've compiled a dataset and created the Small City Economic Dynamism Index to help policymakers and practitioners gain more nuanced perspectives. The index ranks 244 small U.S. cities across 14 indicators of economic dynamism in four categories: demographics, economics, human capital, and infrastructure.

Bright lights, big cities - The Economist
AT THE beginning of February, somewhere in London, a maternity ward welcomed the city's 8,615,246th inhabitant. The mayor of London reckons that the British capital has now surpassed its previous population peak set in 1939. But if it occasionally feels cramped on the Tube, the task for other city planners around the world looks far more daunting. Nearly 9% of the world's population will be living in just 41 megacities (those with more than 10m inhabitants) by 2030.

2015 State Business Tax Climate Index - Tax Foundation
The Tax Foundation’s State Business Tax Climate Index enables business leaders, government policymakers, and taxpayers to gauge how their states’ tax systems compare. While there are many ways to show how much is collected in taxes by state governments, the Index is designed to show how well states structure their tax systems, and provides a road-map to improving these structures.

The Great Recession officially lasted from December 2007 to June 2009, but the job losses spanned a longer timeframe, beginning early in 2007 and extending well into 2010. Some regions were hit harder than others, some were hit earlier, and some took longer to recover, but no corner of the US was spared.

Perhaps just as important as proximity is the question of energy. Musk has promised that the Gigafactory will be powered by renewable energy. What it doesn't show is maybe the deal clincher: geothermal.

Between 2007 and 2012, the U.S. recovered from a temporary patenting lull in the wake of the economic crisis, jumping more than 43 percent. Most states shared in this patent resurgence, though activity continues to be concentrated in a few states. About one quarter of 2012 U.S. patents were awarded in California, the leading patenting state. About half of all patents were awarded in the top five states, California, Texas, New York, Massachusetts and Washington.

A Decade of Hard Times in Places that Rely on Manufacturing Employment - Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland
While the fraction of people employed in the manufacturing sector has declined greatly in the United States over time, manufacturing still makes up a large fraction of employment in some parts of the country. One way to see this is by looking at how the share of manufacturing employment is distributed across counties. The right tail of the distribution shows a set of counties where manufacturing makes up a much higher share of employment than the average for the country.
