The rural broadband divide: An urgent national problem that we can solve - Microsoft on the Issues
While it’s a service that is as critical as a phone or electricity, according to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) broadband is unavailable to roughly 25 million Americans, more than 19 million of which live in rural communities. That’s roughly the population of New York state.

Rural broadband: It's complicated - American Enterprise Institute
Driving between Indianapolis and other parts of the state, one inevitably passes through many small towns and speeds by even more isolated farmhouses, some of which are among the last to enjoy high-speed internet access. Because of the lack of population density, building networks in these geographies is expensive, and sometimes prohibitive.
