Agricultural Dumping in the Chicken Sector: The Case of Western and Central Africa (pdf)
fodder for the chicken bone theory...

"Since the beginning of the 90s, chicken exports from the EU to coastal countries of Western and Central Africa have increased significantly. Those exports are usually made of frozen cut pieces, such as neck, back, legs, and wings. EU consumers trend to eat breast rather than whole chicken, and there is no market in the EU for others cut pieces, except for pet food. European poultry processing industry has the choice between pet food and export to poor countries at low costs, to sell those residues."

‘Boneless’ Wings, the Cheaper Bite
more fodder for the Chicken Bone Theory piece and further notes on our great depression... All this is happening because wholesale chicken prices have turned upside down. The once-lowly wing is selling at a premium over what has long been the gold standard of poultry parts, the skinless boneless chicken breast.

Meeting, Then Eating, the Goat
immigrant titillation. I remember during the 80's when the British press would write similar articles about the 'strange' food habits of immigrant Others. This is the third in this vein from the New York Times in the past year... Next up I'm sure will be the story about how the Arab guys ate little Timmy the goat that the kids in the neighbourhood had adopted. I'll give good odds on that one. Dig also the obligatory photo of the 'free range' chicken. Bonus points for the tie in to trendy 'locavore' urban sustainable food trends.

How globalization kills chickens for their parts
a meeting of the minds with Malia Wollan who also subscribes to The Chicken Bone theory. "In the global poultry market, a nation is a dark meat country or a light meat country, a leg quarter country or a whole chicken country. A country’s place on the meat color spectrum is determined in large part by economic preferences, but taste matters, too. Most Ghanaians I spoke with said they liked the flavor and texture of dark meat better than white meat. Africa has seen a surge in poultry imports over the last several years since the U.S. poultry industry took notice of the continent."

Free-Range Chickens on 125th Street
“We’re all struggling through these hard times, and the chickens are struggling to survive, too,” he said. “They find freedom on the city streets, and once they find freedom, they can eat and survive, rather than be put in a pen or slaughtered and eaten.

A Chicken in Every Garage
interesting thesis, ties Detroit's fondness for SUVs to chicken... It started in 1961 with chicken. Trying to stop a surge of chicken imports into Germany, the European Common Market bowed to the European poultry lobby and almost tripled the tariff on frozen chicken from the United States. Washington, of course, struck back. In 1963, it raised tariffs on a range of European products: brandy to hit the French; dextrine, a food and glue component, to hit the Dutch.

Chinese fast-food chain Panda Express thrives on orange chicken
It is an empire largely built on the thighs of chickens -- the dark meat. The chain started using boneless and skinless dark meat cooked in a light flour batter to hold the moisture. Panda Express sells 45 million pounds of orange chicken annually. "Orange chicken has a huge following. Using lower-cost thigh meat is a tremendous advantage for them at a time when a lot of quick-serve chains are going to more expensive breast meat,"

Poor Infrastructure Undermines Food Safety in West Africa
Not a ground-breaking story but interesting in illuminating the mechanics of increased exports of frozen poultry to Africa including the theory that taste is a factor: Africans like bone on their meat and those parts aren't as popular in China or Brazil..

The identity of a community is to be found in the most unlikely of things. The things that draw people together to form a cohesive whole are not the explicit things that one thinks, it's not warlike territoriality or dedication to some mission "statement"
