Analyze This: Hoaxer Haunts Earnings Calls -
Some big companies have had a surprise during their earnings conference calls this quarter -- and it has nothing to do with the weak economy.

At least seven times just the past three weeks, a mystery caller has cleverly insinuated himself into the normally well-manicured ritual of the quarterly calls. As top executives of publicly traded companies respond to securities analysts' questions about their balance sheets, he impersonates a well-known analyst to get called upon. Then, usually declaring himself to be "Joe Herrick of Gutterman Research," he launches into his own version of analyst-speak.

Wisecrackers | Psychology Today
"Analyzing humor is like dissecting a frog," said E.B. White. "Few people are interested and the frog dies." Sure enough, humor, that most ineffable of human art forms, has long eluded the efforts of psychologists to describe it. So we turned to the real experts—comedians, actors, and satirists. Our round table consisted of Todd Hanson, a writer and editor for The Onion; Bob Mankoff, cartoon editor of The New Yorker; The Daily Show's Kristen Schaal; MADtv's Arden Myrin; Sam Lipsyte, author of Home Land; comedian Eugene Mirman (who, along with Schaal, appears on Flight of the Conchords); and comedian Heather Lawless. Since they're the ones on the front lines making people laugh, we knew they'd be able to shed light on when jokes go too far, whether men like funny women, and that great existential stumper, the knock knock joke.

Duck Soup (1933)
The outrageous film was both a critical and commercial failure at the time of its release - audiences were taken aback by such preposterous political disrespect, buffoonery and cynicism at a time of political and economic crisis, with Roosevelt's struggle against Depression in the US amidst the rising power of Hitler in Germany.

Duck Soup
Duck Soup is a modern comedy in several ways: It creates an utterly fragmented and chaotic world, it thoroughly undermines any kind of traditionalism, it makes such a thing as personal identity (except in a most external sense) impossible, and it celebrates an anarchic irrationalism in the antics of the protagonists. It is most explicitly modern, however, in its systematic disregard for the logic of speech and action, a disregard which renders the whole film a kind of entertainment in which laughter results from the proximity of total senselessness and non-communication, i.e., from the proximity of total silence.

From Jorn K. Bramann: Wittgenstein's Tractatus and the Modern Arts (1985)

this week, that territory feels pretty familiar: I hadn't remembered until I saw it again that Duck Soup, made in 1933 at the height of the Great Depression, begins with talk of an economic bailout.

Sarah Silverman rapes American comedy. - Slate Magazine
Introduces the idea of meta-bigots:

Silverman has become an important member of a guerrilla vanguard in the culture wars that we might call the "meta-bigots".... The meta-bigots work at social problems indirectly; instead of discussing race, rape, abortion, incest, or mass starvation, they parody our discussions of them. They manipulate stereotypes about stereotypes. It's a dangerous game: If you're humorless, distracted, or even just inordinately history-conscious, meta-bigotry can look suspiciously like actual bigotry.
