Opinion | Do the Republicans Even Believe in Democracy Anymore? - The New York Times
Second — and maybe even more so — there's the Republican Party. The gerrymandering enabled them to maintain their House majority during the Obama years even as Democratic House candidates were winning more votes. But there's much more. "Recent Republican behavior — from the 2016 stolen Supreme Court seat to the legislative shenanigans that followed gubernatorial defeats in North Carolina and Wisconsin to voter suppression efforts across numerous states — suggests a party whose commitment to democratic politics has weakened," Mr. Levitsky said. "The fact that the Republican Party has grown increasingly authoritarian poses a greater threat to American democracy than Donald Trump."

An 11-year-old changed election results on a replica Florida state website in under 10 minutes | PBS NewsHour Weekend
With minimal instruction, "An 11-year-old boy on Friday was able to hack into a replica of the Florida state election website and change voting results found there in under 10 minutes"

...50 children between the ages of 8 and 16 [were able] to manipulate party names, candidate names and vote count totals. 11-year-old girl also managed to make changes to the same Florida replica website in about 15 minutes, tripling the number of votes found there.
Sell said more than 30 children hacked a variety of other similar state replica websites in under a half hour.

"These are very accurate replicas of all of the sites," Sell told the PBS NewsHour on Sunday. "These things should not be easy enough for an 8-year-old kid to hack within 30 minutes, it's negligent for us as a society."

Adult hackers were able to access similar voting sites in less than five minutes.

Republicans got their prize. Now comes the backlash. - The Washington Post
ecause of partisan gerrymandering and other factors, Democrats could win by eight percentage points and still not gain control of the House, one study found. And the two-senators-per-state system (which awards people in Republican Wyoming 70 times more voting power than people in Democratic California) gives a big advantage to rural, Republican states.

Trump Team, ALEC, Koch Industries Debate Gerrymandering The Senate
Previously, US senators were selected by state legislatures and political party bosses beholden to powerful industries. The corruption scandals erupting from the wheeling and dealing fueled some of the great muckraking investigative journalism of the early 20th Century. In 1912, progressive Republican US Sen. Robert “Fighting Bob” La Follette campaigned for the popular election of US senators as a means of cracking down on political corruption and corporate control of the democracy. Reformers introduced direct primary elections, ballot initiatives and recall votes, in the same time period.

Sean Spicer: ‘I can only hope that if Coretta Scott King was still with us,’ she’d support Jeff Sessions
"Sean Spicer: 'I can only hope that if Coretta Scott King was still with us,' she'd support Jeff Sessions"

"I would respectfully disagree with her assessment of Sen. Sessions then and now," said Spicer. "His record on civil voting rights, I think, is outstanding."
