myAgro | Anushka Ratnayake | Skoll Award 2018 - YouTube
Title: myAgro | Anushka Ratnayake | Skoll Award 2018 Description: myAgro has pioneered a mobile layaway model in West Africa to help farmers save little by little for high-quality seeds, fertilizer, tools, and training to significantly increase their harvests and income. Farmers pay for inputs and training in small increments throughout the year by purchasing prepaid scratch cards—much like the system by which they top up their minutes on a mobile phone account. After a few months of the farmer laying-away funds, myAgro delivers the fertilizer, seed, and training in time for planting season. In Mali and Senegal in 2017, myAgro’s 34,000 customers saw a 60 percent average annual income increase. This innovative approach to microsavings gives every farmer the ability to better provide for her or his family and break the cycle of poverty. myAgro helps smallholder farmers with limited cash generate more income from their land while aggregating demand to stimulate the input market, incentivizing suppliers to produce a sufficient quantity of high-quality fertilizers and seeds. In this way, myAgro drives significant value to the entire smallholder agricultural system. http://bit.ly/2HViT54 Video Credits: Director: Phil Collis Producer: Gabriel Diamond Camera: Robbie Stauder Editor: Matthew Beighley Associate Producer: Shivani Garg Patel The Skoll Awards distinguish transformative leaders whose organizations disrupt the status quo, drive sustainable large-scale change, and are poised to create even greater impact on the world. “Social entrepreneurs share several important characteristics: concern for the vulnerable, optimism about our future, an ability to think and do, and most importantly, an unfailing belief in solutions,” said Jeff Skoll, Founder and Chairman of the Skoll Foundation. “These four remarkable people give us great hope that a more peaceful, prosperous, and sustainable future is within reach.” By investing in organizations when an innovation is ripe for accelerated and scaled adoption, the Skoll Awards help unleash the full global potential and reach of social entrepreneurs. Awardees’ organizations receive $1.25 million core support investments to scale their work and increase their impact. The social entrepreneurs also gain leverage through their long-term participation in a global community of visionary leaders and innovators dedicated to solving some of the biggest global challenges of our time. http://bit.ly/2vLQ6uV Liked at: April 25, 2018 at 09:32PM

Angaza | Lesley Marincola | Skoll Award 2018 - YouTube
Title: Angaza | Lesley Marincola | Skoll Award 2018 Description: Angaza created an accessible, affordable, Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG) financing mechanism to get solar and clean energy products into households with the greatest need--those one billion people living in extreme poverty and off-the-grid, without basic infrastructure, reliable energy, or efficient consumer products. Angaza’s PAYG platform enables even the smallest, most remote, last-mile distributors to offer affordable financing to their customers on an ever-expanding portfolio of life-changing products in more than 30 countries. Angaza’s business model is powered by two tools: technology licenses that allow hardware manufacturers to embed remote-activation circuitry into their products, and cloud-based loan activation and enforcement software that help distributors use the PAYG financing approach. Angaza has charted a path for digital finance service providers to fill the market gaps that traditional brick-and-mortar financial institutions leave behind in impoverished urban centers and remote rural communities. Angaza’s platform has helped 500,000 households across more than 30 countries afford solar energy products, saving consumers $50 million. http://bit.ly/2HViRKu SKOLL AWARDS FOR SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP The Skoll Foundation presents the Skoll Awards for Social Entrepreneurship each year to a select group of social entrepreneurs whose innovations have already had significant, proven impact on some of the world’s most pressing problems, and invests directly in the promise of even greater impact at scale. By investing in organizations when an innovation is ripe for accelerated and scaled adoption, the Skoll Awards help unleash the full global potential and reach of social entrepreneurs. Each Awardee receives a $1.25 million investment or core support grant from Skoll over three years to scale their work and increase their impact. They also gain leverage through their long-term participation in a global community of visionary leaders and innovators dedicated to solving the world’s most pressing problems. We select Awardees that focus on one or more of the following issues: Environmental Sustainability, Education, Economic Opportunity, Health, Peace and Human Rights, and Sustainable Markets. http://bit.ly/2vHEAAI Video Credits: Director/Camera: Gabriel Diamond Editor: Matthew Beighley Associate Producers: Tim Carlberg, Ed Diener Executive Producer: Phil Collis Liked at: April 25, 2018 at 09:10PM

Peter Singer: "The Most Good You Can Do" | Talks at Google - YouTube
Title: Peter Singer: "The Most Good You Can Do" | Talks at Google Description: Philosopher Peter Singer visited Google's Cambridge, MA office to discuss his book, "The Most Good You Can Do: How Effective Altruism Is Changing Ideas About Living Ethically". "The most influential living philosopher talked about effective altruism, which is built upon the simple but profound idea that living a fully ethical life involves doing the most good you can do. Such a life requires an unsentimental view of charitable giving: to be a worthy recipient of our support, an organization must be able to demonstrate that it will do more good with our money or our time than other options open to us. In his book, Singer introduces us to an array of remarkable people who are restructuring their lives in accordance with these ideas, and shows how living altruistically often leads to greater personal fulfillment than living for oneself. Peter Singer first became well-known internationally after the publication of "Animal Liberation" in 1975. In 2011, Time Magazine included Animal Liberation on its "All-TIME" list of the 100 best nonfiction books published in English since 1923. Singer has written, co-authored, edited or co-edited more than 40 books, which have appeared in 25 languages. Liked at: April 20, 2018 at 11:02PM

0x: an open protocol for trustless, low friction exchange of ERC20 tokens - YouTube
Title: 0x: an open protocol for trustless, low friction exchange of ERC20 tokens Description: In the two years that have passed since the Ethereum blockchain’s genesis block, numerous decentralized applications (dApps) have created Ethereum smart contracts for peer-to-peer exchange. Rapid iteration and a lack of best practices have left the blockchain scattered with proprietary and application-specific implementations. As a result, end users are exposed to numerous smart contracts of varying quality and security, with unique configuration processes and learning curves, all of which implement the same functionality. This approach imposes unnecessary costs on the network by fragmenting end users according to the particular dApp each user happens to be using, destroying valuable network effects around liquidity. We present 0x: an open protocol and shared settlement layer for trustless, low friction exchange of ERC20 tokens. Will Warren is Co-founder at 0x where he is developing public infrastructure for peer-to-peer exchange on the Ethereum blockchain. After receiving a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from UC San Diego, Will worked as a graduate research assistant at Los Alamos National Laboratory conducting applied physics research. Will spent two years in UC San Diego’s Structural Engineering doctoral program before dropping out to pursue an interest in Ethereum full time. Liked at: April 20, 2018 at 04:20PM

The Science of Happiness, Motivation, and Meaning | Dan Ariely - YouTube
Title: The Science of Happiness, Motivation, and Meaning | Dan Ariely Description: It turns out there's quite a bit of cognitive dissonance impairing our understanding of motivation and happiness. Duke University's Professor Dan Ariely fills in the gaps. Ariely's latest book is "Payoff: The Hidden Logic That Shapes Our Motivations" (https://goo.gl/SkXk2p). Read more at BigThink.com: http://bit.ly/2HueUJ7 Follow Big Think here: YouTube: http://goo.gl/CPTsV5 Facebook: http://bit.ly/2h54mru Twitter: https://twitter.com/bigthink Transcript - So when we think about what motivates people maybe the first think about is what we think motivates people and what don’t we understand motivates people. And maybe the first misunderstanding is about the pleasure principle. So we have this idea of we have the right to pursue happiness and we’re trying to be happy and that’s really what we’re pursuing – happiness. But think about it. What gives you happiness in a way that is observable? Maybe sitting on the beach drinking a mojito or maybe sitting on the sofa watching a sitcom. But if you do almost anything that is useful, meaningful, that you take pride of it’s not the same things. But imagine you have a whole life of sitting on the beach drinking mojitos. How happy would that life be? So the first I think mistake is that we pursue momentary happiness rather than longer term happiness. So we do the things that will make us laugh out loud today kind of. Not always laugh out loud but kind of like that. And we don’t do the things that are difficult and complex and challenging but give us a very different sense of happiness. Think about something like running a marathon. You don’t see anybody happy. Like if you came as an alien and you image peoples’ brains and you looked at their facial expressions as they’re running a marathon you would say somebody’s punishing them. Why Michio Kaku wants to avoid alien contact at all costs - YouTube
Title: Why Michio Kaku wants to avoid alien contact at all costs Description: If aliens do exist, theoretical physicist Michio Kaku posits, why would they want anything to do with us? It would be like a hunter talking to a squirrel, he suggests, and he has a great point. Hollywood and science fiction novels have conditioned us for years to believe that aliens either want to hang out on our intellectual level and learn from us... or destroy us. If alien life really does have the technology and know-how to make it all the way here, perhaps we should just play it cool and not assume that we are the top species in the universe. Read more at BigThink.com: http://bit.ly/2I2lV4M Follow Big Think here: YouTube: http://goo.gl/CPTsV5 Facebook: http://bit.ly/2h54mru Twitter: https://twitter.com/bigthink We have this mental image that a flying saucer will circle the White House lawn, land on the White House lawn and give us a bounty of all sorts of technological goodies to initiate an age of Aquarius on the planet earth. Personally, I don’t think that’s going to happen. For example, if you’re in the forest do you go out and talk to the squirrels and the deer? Maybe you do for a while, but after a while, you get bored because they don’t talk back to you because they have nothing interesting to tell you because they can’t relate to our values and our ideas. If you go down to an anthill do you go down to the ants and say I bring you trinkets; I bring you bees; take me to your aunt queen; I give you nuclear energy. So I think for the most part the aliens are probably not going to be interested in us because we’re so arrogant to believe that we have something to offer them. Realize that they could be thousands, maybe millions of years ahead of us in technology and they may have no interest in interacting with us in the same way that we don’t necessarily want to deal with the squirrels and the deer in the forest. Now some people say that we should not try to make contact with them because they could be potentially dangerous. For the most part, I think they’re going to be peaceful because they’ll be thousands of years ahead of us, but we cannot take the chance. So I personally believe that we should not try to advertise our existence to alien life in outer space because of the fact that we don’t know their intentions. Liked at: March 3, 2018 at 09:09PM

The Ethics of Traveling | Christoph Winter | TEDxPrincetonU - YouTube
Title: The Ethics of Traveling | Christoph Winter | TEDxPrincetonU Description: Tourism contributes to 9% of the global GDP and accounts for one in eleven jobs worldwide. It affects the people living in the regions we explore as backpackers, more conventional tourists or exchange students. Travelling also has a significant impact on us as we are facing issues and opportunities we wouldn’t experience at home. Yet, while the United Nations World Tourism Organization is already pushing for a “universal right to tourism”, we rarely engage in the ethics of traveling. We may ask ourselves, whether we should stay in some local guesthouse rather than in a Western hotel chain and whether we should really be celebrating when our bargaining skills finally get us the 50% discount. However, a much more important question seems to be entirely neglected: where we ought to travel to in the first place? Christoph is currently a Visiting Fellow at the Department of Psychology at Harvard University and a graduate student at the Faculty of Law at Humboldt-University to Berlin. Last year, Christoph was a Visiting Researcher at the Departments of Philosophy and Politics at Princeton University. He conducted his undergraduate studies in law at Humboldt-University to Berlin, the University of Sydney and King’s College London and previously worked for, among others, University College London, the United Nations Office of Legal Affairs in New York and taught at various universities. His primary research interests lie in the intersections of law, morality and the behavioral sciences. Christoph is a passionate traveller, soccer player and scuba diver. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://bit.ly/2Cu7bvW Liked at: February 28, 2018 at 03:38PM

Bitcoin Q&A: Price premiums and arbitrage - YouTube
Title: Bitcoin Q&A: Price premiums and arbitrage Description: How do we handle geographical arbitrage? Demonetisation and bitcoin price premiums in India. Arbitrage is the process of diminishing the difference in price in open markets. If differences in price emerge, they can be exploited for profit until the difference goes to zero. The problem is not bitcoin, the problem is currency controls. Bitcoin has no location as a global network, it was "in the US" to start with or "in India" to end with. What arbitrage activity tells you is not that bitcoin is worth $1200 here, but that rupees are discounted 20% against hard assets, including other national currencies. The market is sending you a signal. A currency that cannot move across borders is worth less. Falcon Heavy Test Flight - YouTube
Title: Falcon Heavy Test Flight Description: This is an updated version of the live webcast to include both side booster cameras and additional Starman views. When Falcon Heavy lifts off, it will be the most powerful operational rocket in the world by a factor of two. With the ability to lift into orbit nearly 64 metric tons (141,000 lb)---a mass greater than a 737 jetliner loaded with passengers, crew, luggage and fuel--Falcon Heavy can lift more than twice the payload of the next closest operational vehicle, the Delta IV Heavy, at one-third the cost. Falcon Heavy draws upon the proven heritage and reliability of Falcon 9. Its first stage is composed of three Falcon 9 nine-engine cores whose 27 Merlin engines together generate more than 5 million pounds of thrust at liftoff, equal to approximately eighteen 747 aircraft. Only the Saturn V moon rocket, last flown in 1973, delivered more payload to orbit. Falcon Heavy was designed from the outset to carry humans into space and restores the possibility of flying missions with crew to the Moon or Mars. Liked at: February 7, 2018 at 07:30PM
