Beekeeping with the Warré hive -- Lifts
"As the Warré hive is normally extended by nadiring boxes, i.e. inserting them under the growing brood nest, some heavy lifting can be avoided by making a mechanical lift according to one of the designs shown on this page. The originator of the Warré hive lift is Marc Gatineau (France) who used an action essentially the same as the guillotine formerly used for executions in France. More recent designs, though closely similar in principle, are less obviously guillotine-like."
Good thing. Urban beekeeping has enough PR problems as it is.

New kid on the engineering notebook block. They try to sound about as passionate and committed as someone binding mostly blank sheets of paper can be, but I'll go along with some of that. However, the website is not informative, and Amazon.com's inventory is spotty.

NIST/SEMATECH e-Handbook of Statistical Methods
Could be a useful reference, in that it concisely summarizes (that's the "handbook" aspect) a lot of concepts. Published by our friends at the National Institute of Science and Technology; so let's use it, and leverage our tax dollars! (And it won't wear out, like e.g. highways.)

Clearprint Vellum Paper
Just like dad always used. The orange/black/white color scheme makes me nostalgic. I can see that what he told me about it being expensive was true. I can also see that what they claim about it being archival must be true, because on the rare occasions when I use it, I still draw from the small stock he gave me, or what Janis bought when we were in college. Interesting to see that Clearprint has been looking at fine art applications.

A long shot potential repository of wikiGong archives. I'd enjoy visiting, though. Who could resist the promise of the architectural toy collection?

Up and Down the Ladder of Abstraction
Beautifully crafted essay on abstraction in design, with interactive widgets (which lead to a little manifesto on hor programming languages and other tools should, but do not, support this kind of thinking); per Ray Tayek, in the Orange County Java Users' Group email newsletter.
