Fritzing Fritzing
This is why everyone's Arduino diagrams look the same: Because they're drawn with this application, which presumably set the standard; or with other tools which imitate the look, e.g. TinkerCAD. A quote from the website compels me to use Fritzing for the purpose, as a point of honor:

Fritzing is an open-source hardware initiative that makes electronics accessible as a creative material for anyone. We offer a software tool, a community website and services in the spirit of Processing and Arduino, fostering a creative ecosystem that allows users to document their prototypes, share them with others, teach electronics in a classroom, and layout and manufacture professional pcbs.

But then there's this, in the forums:

The unfortunate truth is that Fritzing is dying. It started as a funded research project which is how it got this far. When the grants ran out it went open source but the support hasn’t been there to keep it living and the developers have (presumably) moved on to other funded projects. There is a project to move it to javascript in its early stages but development on the current implementation of Fritzing has pretty much died (the javascript project is seen as the only way forward). I’m poking at bug fixing, but its a large, largely poorly documented project and even getting a development environment running has been difficult.

So crap.

Silicone Molding with FDM Patterns
FDM, or fused deposition molding, is beside the point, as far as I'm concerned. What interests me about this document is the rules of thumb for silicone part design. Most of these apply generally.
From the document:

Silicone molding, also known as room temperature vulcanized (RTV) molding, is a fast and affordable solution for prototyping and short-run production. Offering lead times of three to seven days at just a fraction of the cost of an aluminum tool for injection molding, silicone molding is an attractive alternative for the production of plastic parts.

The Sky Hive Is a Towering High Rise for Bees in Downtown Maastricht | Inhabitat - Green Design, Innovation, Architecture, Green Building
"Bee Collective’s Sky Hive is a towering yellow urban beehive located in downtown Maastricht. The prototype was created to help support urban beekeeping, while keeping the bees safely out of reach from passersby. The adjustable beehive stands atop a tall pole, creating a presence at a public park, while being far enough away to mitigate fears of bee stings."

Beekeeping with the Warré hive -- Lifts
"As the Warré hive is normally extended by nadiring boxes, i.e. inserting them under the growing brood nest, some heavy lifting can be avoided by making a mechanical lift according to one of the designs shown on this page. The originator of the Warré hive lift is Marc Gatineau (France) who used an action essentially the same as the guillotine formerly used for executions in France. More recent designs, though closely similar in principle, are less obviously guillotine-like."
Good thing. Urban beekeeping has enough PR problems as it is.

Skeuomorph - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"...a derivative object that retains ornamental design cues from structures that were necessary in the original"; or, more broadly, "a physical ornament or design on an object made to resemble another material or technique." One justification for skeuomorphs is that they provide "perceived affordances," helping users tell what something does based on its appearance--as pointed out by Donald Norman, the "Norman" of Nielsen Norman Group. From Kate Meyer's articles on minimalist web design, for Nielsen Norman Group's website. Of course Wikipedia has better coverage of this concept than Wiktionary.

skeuomorph - Wiktionary
"A design feature copied from a similar feature in another object, even when not functionally necessary." As far as good design goes, this isn't the worst thing that could happen. For example, the trash can icon is a skeuomorph; but so is plastic printed with wood grain. From Kate Meyer's articles on minimalist web design, for Nielsen Norman Group's website. Wiktionary ought to support its own underlining, bookmarks, or dog-earing--features hard copy dictionaries support. Since it doesn't, I'm pressing Delicious into service.

Clearprint Vellum Paper
Just like dad always used. The orange/black/white color scheme makes me nostalgic. I can see that what he told me about it being expensive was true. I can also see that what they claim about it being archival must be true, because on the rare occasions when I use it, I still draw from the small stock he gave me, or what Janis bought when we were in college. Interesting to see that Clearprint has been looking at fine art applications.
