This is what M. Keegan Uhl wants to do when he's not making beautiful leather goods at his company, One Star Leather Goods.

One Star Leather Goods
Good-looking, locally made leather goods: notebook covers, wallets, belts, pen cases.... I met company founder M. Keegan Uhl manning a table at the 2019 Los Angeles International Pen Show.

Buy good things, own them a long time.

One Star Leather Goods are made from the highest quality American sourced leather available. Each piece is individually hand cut, hand sewn and hand finished in our little garage shop in Los Angeles. Our designs are simple, elegant and functional. Our products will wear and age beautifully and are meant to be used and abused. [That's important to me!]

"We blend the best ingredients to produce traditional yet locally-minded miso paste and products. Produced in the heart of L.A.’s Arts District. We hope to serve the local miso demand first and foremost while offering a taste to global neighbors as well. Small batch sizes, unhurried fermentation times, and attention to detail allows us to offer a masterful miso."

I encountered their "omiso balls" outside Demitasse at the 2019 Little Tokyo Oshogatsu, then foolishly did not sample any of their miso soup, or remember to return and buy some.

Monica Leal Cueva
To be honest, I don't remember where I saw Cueva's striking work and picked up her business card.

"Mónica Leal Cueva is a visual artist based in Los Angeles. Born in Mexico into a passionately artistic family, she was exposed to a wide range of artistic expression from early childhood. Her father, a trio guitarist, introduced her to the deep romanticism of bolero music, and her mother, an accomplished painter, showed her the wonders of the classical masters. Her family’s bohemian poetry-reading evenings further stroked her fascination with the fundamental unity of the creative process through word, sound or color, and her constant traveling through Mexico imbued her with the subtle sensibility of its traditional and modern arts, which blend a direct, unflinching look at what it is to be human with a subtle, even tender surrealism and love of fantasy."

One half of a combo listed by Jonathan Gold in his 2017 list of the 101 best restaurants in Southern California--making the list include at least 102 restaurants. (Do any of the other entries reflect such sleight of hand?) Unfortunately I only ate at the other half 3/22/2018. I'll have to go back to get it right. (As of late July 2018, I've done this. I'll be back!)
