The Trouble with Soulmate Marks
Summary:

Some people are born with a soulmate mark. Others secretly petition the gods. The gods rarely answer, but when they do, there are consequences. For most races, soulmates are coveted. For Hobbits, soulmates are too passionate, too possessive, and have too many children and not enough prize-winning produce. Female Billa Baggins may be tempted by Thorin Oakenshield, but she knows better.

|| “Excuse me, but what did you just say?” demanded Billa Baggins, planting her hands on the natural shelves formed by her curvaceous hips. They were a bit less squishy after months of travel, but still good enough for this hobbit spinster.

“I asked if that strange brown circle on your upper arm is a soulmate mark,” repeated Fili slowly. “Really Billa, you need to work on paying attention more if you want to stay safe on our journey.”

“Not to mention that a better situational awareness would spare you some blushes and embarrassment, lass,” Nori added from behind her shoulder.

Billa jumped in surprise and huffed. “I manage to sneak up on you often enough that you have no room to talk!” she defended.

Nori laughed, licked his finger, and drew her a point in the air. “The lass is better at sneaking than you are too, Fili,” Nori said.

“Trouble sleeping?” Bilbo couldn’t help but tease.

“We were just-“ Bofur began, twisting around to look at Bilbo, a hint of a guilt hovering over his face when he glanced back down at the table.

Things We Grow Together
Summary: Dwarves are born with a bone-deep knowledge of their One, but Thorin stops feeling the pull of his after the dragon attacks Erebor. Needless to say, he is surprised, and not initially pleased, to find his One living behind a round green door decades later.

Hobbits find a seed that represents their innermost self and can offer it to someone else to plant. This creates a bond as strong as deep roots in the earth between them. It is just like Bilbo, after years of thinking that no one would want his, to offer his soul-seed to a dwarf that does not understand gardening metaphors.

But just because they have found each other does not make the quest to reclaim Erebor any easier, and in the end a sacrifice is still made.

Thorin has to trust in the strength of the bond between himself and his One, because otherwise he will never believe that the sacrifice was worth it.

One of These Days (Again and Again)
Summary: “Right,” Fili said. “We need to all stay alive, then. That shouldn’t be too hard.”

“You try it,” Bilbo muttered. “See how well you do.”

~

By a curse or a blessing from the Valar, Bilbo finds himself repeating the same horrific day of war outside of Erebor again and again. His repeats are always triggered when someone from the company falls. He suffers days and days on his own before the others begin to repeat the day with him.

One would think that with the whole company, an elf king, and a bowman all knowing what was to come, Bilbo would have an easier time getting them all through the day alive.

One would think that, wouldn't they.

Hearts Will As Hearts Must
Summary: The Dwarves are returning to Erebor reclaimed, and the elves uphold their promise to safeguard the caravans as they pass through Mirkwood.

One particular Dwarf has wit and spark enough to match Legolas Greenleaf - perhaps even outmatch him.

It's hate at first sight.

|| “Quiet!”

“I am being quiet! This is as quiet as we get!”

“And yet you still speak, and you crash through the trees as though you were a herd of Oliphaunts! Do you mean to run into every single one?” Legolas growled, and he rubbed at his forehead. There was a tension headache building just behind his eyes. Why had he offered to scout ahead again?

Oh yes, that was it. He had wanted some respite from the crashing, noisy, foul-mouthed and foul-natured Dwarves. They moved in slow, stately procession through the Greenwood now, returning to the seat of their old Kingdom. Elves had been set to guide and guard every wagon and train, to ensure their safety and protect their own lands.

But his moment of peace was not to be: not to be outdone, the very worst of the lot had offered to join him. ‘Lightest, swiftest and youngest,’ he remembered the Dwarf saying, his peach-fuzz jaw out-thrust.

Heart of the Mountain
Summary: After the Battle of Five Armies, there is still the matter of the Arkenstone and the Lonely Mountain to be settled.

|| "The Heart of the Mountain, huh?" he murmured.

The old Dwarf nodded. "It became synonymous with the king's right to rule," Balin added quietly. "It made Thrór the king he was, for better and for worse. And quite possibly led to his madness. If nothing else, it made the fall all the more swift."

"What will happen if the Arkenstone won't glow for Thorin?" Bilbo asked quietly.

Balin sighed and shook his head. "The fact of the matter is," he murmured. "I'm not sure if he should ever have it at all."

This Home Made Anew
Green to Gold: “If you die Thorin Oakenshield so help me I will march into the halls of your fathers and drag you back by your ragged braids.”

Concerning Fauntlings: “I’ll take good care of him.” Bilbo promised, his hand caressing the familiar wood patterns of the walls that he’d loved since he was a babe.

There was no reply, but a serenity filled Bilbo’s heart and he knew his promise had been heard and accepted with the same ease of Primula’s smile and Drogo’s laugh. He closed the door on the ghosts of his parents and the echo of Frodo’s and filled his lungs with fresh cool air before marching down to Frodo who was feeding his Pony, Coal, an apple.

“Alright lad, are you ready for an adventure?” he asked and Frodo looked up at him with Primula’s eyes and Drogo’s shy smile.

“I am.”

What We Lost(And What We Found): The first time Frodo goes missing in Erebor, Thorin nearly declares war on the visiting delegations of men and elves in fear they hobbit-napped his nephew.

Tricky Games
Summary: Once Dis receives word, she makes for Erebor, determined to see her gravely-wounded sons and brother, determined to unpick and rebraid the mess her brother has made. There’s none more equal to the task.

|| When the first message arrived declaring Thorin Oakenshield King Under the Mountain and also noting his glorious achievements in battle and how close to death he was, Dis's first action was to take only a moment to thank the Valor quietly and profusely, her whole being knotted with gratitude. There was no time for more. Then she convened her council. There would be celebrations and all else at Erebor, what mattered now was action. A small group was quickly sent to the Mountain, they would scout the roads that those leaving the Blue Mountains would take. The Orcs had been defeated but they were not vanquished and they weren’t the only risks that awaited. Dis would not see this journey prolonged or made more painful.

She met discreetly with her spymaster – only Haraka, her second, knew their identity and that was only through necessity. The spymaster was given clear instruction; to send forth Dwarves in their employ to seek stories that could give Dis more information than the message could hold. She would have the most complete truth possible, about what truly awaited her in the Mountain.

Dis privately read the message from Erebor several times. She recognised Balin’s hand. It was Thorin’s most trusted advisor writing to Princess Dis, Regent of the Blue Mountains. But he’d tucked in crumbs of information that Dis, brother to Thorin and mother to Fili and Kili, would want to hear. There were codes to his word choices, to the number of sentences used. It was not much but Dis read and reread them again, to commit them to her aching heart.

Thorin was gravely injured – Dis was almost sure that dragon sickness had had something to do with it, she’d always known, always, that it would continue to strangle her family. It was why she’d never wanted Fili and Kili on Thorin’s foolhardy quest. But they were both of age and Thorin was King and Dis had never publicly spoken against her brother. She had cursed him angrily behind closed doors and had watched her sons leave; sure she would never see them again as they were then. She’d cursed the gold and her brother’s narrow vision - for old stories were not retold as calls for redemption but rather for warning of repeated mistakes. But her brother had only ever heard shame to be removed, a birthright to be reclaimed, a battle to finally win.

Elf-Friends
Summary: After the Battle of Five Armies, Fíli is stuck running Erebor while his brother and uncle recover. However, things are somewhat mixed up with the arrival of Tauriel, banished from Mirkwood and carrying a secret. If Thorin can forgive Bilbo, though, surely he can be convinced to accept an elf? (It might be best, however, not to mention that according to elven custom, she is already his niece-in-law -- with quickly growing proof to show for it...)

|| "My Prince," the dwarf said, somewhat out of breath. He had to have run over quite some distance, as Bilbo knew well that dwarves did not tire easily. "There is an elf at the gates."

"An elf?" Fíli straightened, a frown on his face. "I thought we had settled the matters with Thranduil and his folk for now." There would be more negotiations, to be sure, about trade and allowances for the passage of the forest, but it had been agreed those would wait until the more urgent matter of immediate repairs had been seen to.

"She says she is not here from Thranduil, Sir, but refuses to give her business to any of us. She wishes to speak with your brother."

"Kíli?" Fíli's eyes widened a fraction. "Tell me, what does this elf look like? What of her gear?"

"She's a woman, far as anyone can tell of them," the messenger replied. "Long red hair, bears a bow. We told her Prince Kíli isn't available, but she says she'll wait as long as it takes." He made a face. "I suspect she might well set up camp if we leave her to wait, Sir. She seemed quite insistent."

Summary: Fíli and Ori have broken no promises. Fíli did not try to force a marriage on one unwilling, and Ori did not run from Erebor like a thief in the night. And yet, the two of them are paying for the crimes of their family. Somehow or another, they must find a way to make a marriage work, in between the politics and the old hurts.

Smaug never came to Erebor's door, but then, there are greater monsters than dragons in this world.

|| Super political world-building that I loved a lot and am sad is unfinished. But it ends in an ok place if you were there for the Ori/Fili build and not for the political stuff and whatever Bilbo is really doing in Erebor, and what's up with the orcs.

Cultivation
Roots: Here in Erebor, among the Dwarves who had reclaimed their home with blood and sweat, Bilbo could almost forget that he was a Hobbit of the Shire. He could almost forget that Hobbits were not as other beings of Middle-earth, and that a mountain devoid of rich plant life was not the place for one such as he.

Branches: It was only on the last page of the letter that Bilbo realised why his cousin might have pressed her Dwarf messenger so, for on the last page Amaranth wrote, with a shaking hand, of the death of her sister Primula, and Primula’s husband Drogo Baggins.

Dwarves And Damsels
Summary: While there were many downsides to being an unmarried lass in the Shire, at least back home Bilbo would never have been accused of fathering the child of a dwarven prince. Of course, she can't tell the truth, because Kíli's actual lover isn't exactly likely to gain Thorin's favor - not that anyone else seems to care what she has in her trousers.

Now she just has to survive jealous dwarves and embarrassing discussions until either Tauriel returns to the mountain or Thorin gets over himself. Or herself, Bilbo hasn't exactly asked yet.

Now what's an honorable hobbit lass to do? And where do you find one around here?

|| "Kíli, I'm not warning you again." Because she hadn't already said that at least two times this morning. "Your uncle is going to come here next, and he's going to be rather cross with you."

"But I don't wanna." Kíli's whine was muffled by the pillow he had hidden his face in. "Just five more minutes?"

"You've already overslept enough." Bilbo sighed, crossing her arms over her chest. "Come on, Kíli. You're going to miss breakfast."

This got her another whine. "'M not hungry."

"Don't be ridiculous. Of course you're hungry." For all that dwarves didn't eat enough meals for her liking, when they did get to the table they had a very respectable appetite.

"I'm not, so go away."

Bilbo paused, then softened her tone. "I know you miss Tauriel, but hiding away isn't going to solve anything."

There was no response, but the way she saw Kíli's shoulders stiffen was indication enough that she had found her mark.

"You know he's not gone forever, right? He'll be back soon enough, I'm sure."

"What would you know?" Again a muffled sound, though this time more of a growl than a whine. "You've never even met him properly!"

The Color of Possibility
Summary: When Bilbo puts himself between Thorin and Azog's blade, his mithril shirt protecting them both, it isn't long before some dwarves whisper that 'Oakenshield' might not be the best epithet for their king anymore. But for Bilbo, barred from Thorin's sight since the battle, this new epithet only adds to the sting. Spending his days caring for the recovering princes, Bilbo wonders how much more of this he can take, not suspecting his place at the center of a silent divide in the company.

|| “Your banishment was revoked,” Balin assured him the first time. “But Thorin’s not ready to see you yet. Not after what happened.”

Bilbo took that to mean he wasn’t forgiven for preventing Thorin from killing himself (though it was always possible that Thorin was still bitter over the theft of the Arkenstone), and the news that came from the royal chambers had agreed with him. Dori reported disapprovingly that Thorin ate and slept little, putting everything into the restoration of the mountain. It felt like a return of the dragon sickness, except now Bilbo was the untrustworthy one, instead of Thorin’s kin. As much as he tried to tell himself that at least this was a restoration of the natural order of things, Bilbo couldn’t shake the feeling that Thorin was still trying to kill himself, and this time it was his fault.

But of course all of that was ridiculous. Fíli and Kíli were both still alive, but in a precarious condition. Fíli hadn’t woken since being thrown off the tower, and Kíli’s chest wound had become infected thanks to whatever vile substances Bolg’s blade had been coated with. Of course Thorin would try to distract himself from something so terrible as his nephews hanging on for dear life.

far across the distance
Summary: Balin blinks, shifting backwards. “Laddie, it’s—it’s been a year. Bilbo has returned home, to the Shire.” He looks at Thorin, then says more gently, “I did not realize you counted the hobbit among your treasures.”

|| His lungs cave in, breath forced down his throat, and Thorin wakes up. His heart is pounding and he can hear murmuring all around him, but all he’s focused on is the humming in his ears.

“Erebor,” he croaks out, and someone strokes his hand. He wrenches his eyes open, and even in his unfocused gaze he sees the arched ceiling and breathes in clean stone and knows he is home.He gasps another lungful, and coughs, “sister-sons.” There is rustling and it’s too hard to keep his eyes open so he closes them, chest heaving. His hands are moved and then his fingers are clutching curls, and he opens his eyes to see a golden-framed face on his left and a dark-haired face to his right, and he shakes with gratitude. “Sister,” he whispers and he hears a snort as a hand heavy with rings cups his cheek. He inhales sharply, listening to the humming in his ears, and gasps, “Burglar.”

Silence descends, thick and heavy like the river that almost drowned him, and he gathers breath to growl, “burglar,” but nothing comes. He sees no hand, feels no touch, and the pounding of his heart speeds up. His hands have been emptied, and he clenches his fingers tightly. “Burglar,” he almost shouts, twisting his head to look wildly. The hand at his cheek becomes oppressive, moving to his chest to keep him down, but where is his burglar? The space has grown noisy without Thorin being aware of it, and a sour-smelling cloth presses down on his mouth. He breathes in again to yell this time, but the sour smell stings at his throat and white spots appear on the corner of his vision. He coughs, limbs growing heavy, and before the darkness takes him he whispers a final time, “Bilbo.”

Erebor and Weeds
All Due Care: The momentous first evening that Thorin and Bilbo share a bed, although neither of them notice its momentousness. Prequel snippet to "Beneath the Ever-Bending Sky;" written before the second movie was released, so departs from canon in terms of the events of Laketown.

Adventures and Battles and Deathbed Confessions: "Farewell, good thief." Thorin and Bilbo, after the Battle of the Five Armies.

To Flourish, to Fight, to Run: Thorin catches her hand in his as she touches the gauze. “You still call me Thorin,” he says, softly.

“Well,” she says, trying as hard as she can to sound businesslike, “That’s because you’re not my king.”

“You’re under my mountain,” Thorin points out.

Bilbo scowls, and shakes his hand loose. “I can’t believe you’re arguing not five seconds after you’ve woken up,” she says, pulling the gauze free. It’s mostly healed, an ugly scar that will be there for the rest of his life. “Though perhaps I shouldn’t be surprised.”

Beneath the Ever-Bending Sky: When Thorin summons the company to the Lesser Hall and Bilbo explains what she wants done, there is a long silence, followed by thunderous argument.

“I suppose we shouldn’t have expected better,” Bilbo mutters as Óin and Dwalin bellow at each other.

It’s typical, Thorin thinks, and is disgusted with himself for the rush of fondness he feels.

An Early Start
Summary: Everyone knows they were doing it all along, right?

|| The next night Bilbo is prepared. Once everyone is busy eating, he clears his throat and says, "Thank you for letting me borrow your coat, Thorin, but I really think I might have to let you have it back now. I’m feeling much better, I assure you, and while you may not want a sick burglar, I think we can hardly afford a sick King."

Hopefully Thorin will understand that this isn’t meant as a rebuff. It’s been nice, feeling that their company’s leader despises him less than before. They’ve hugged, and it’s been a good week since Thorin last insulted him.

"My people do not suffer from sickness of the body, Master Baggins," says Thorin.

"But you can feel the cold, surely?" asks Bilbo, and Thorin frowns, as if the suggestion offends him. The rest of the company has fallen unusually quiet, watching this exchange take place.

"Yes," Thorin admits, "but we are sons of Durin. We endure.”

Obviously Bilbo wants to be careful of Thorin’s feelings, with everyone paying attention like this. He’s the king, and he’s got enough on his plate after all, but Bilbo is reluctant to let the matter go, even if Thorin is now openly glowering at him.

It’s a glower, all right, but gosh, Thorin’s eyes are terribly blue. And he’s far, far more handsome than ought to be allowed. No-one could blame Bilbo for the idea that falls from his lips well before his brain has properly considered it.

“Then we should share it. I’m only small, it’d be big enough for both of us.”

I Sang In My Chains Like The Sea
Summary: In which Bilbo is a Jaeger pilot candidate, and Middle Earth stands on the brink of destruction.

|| ‘You are mistaken, Gandalf,’ said Dís, speaking with a smooth, even voice, ‘I have met Mister Baggins before, though not in person.’

‘You have?’ said Bilbo, surprised, ‘forgive me, but I think I’d remember meeting you.’

Dís graced him with the slightest of smiles, ‘oh, but you have. I don’t expect you to remember it, Mister Baggins, for I was piloting a Jaeger at the time.’

It took a few moments for Bilbo to process this. The revelation was like a shot to the heart, and Bilbo could only stare at the Marshall, mouth open, likely looking very foolish until he managed to stutter,

‘Then I owe you my life, Marshall. I can’t tell you how grateful I am for what you did...for what happened in Minas Tirith.’ Bilbo swallowed. His chest felt like it had been hollowed out. ‘I...simply wouldn’t be here,’ he continued quietly, ‘you inspired me, that day.’

‘Thanks are not needed,’ Dís said, her sliver of a smile widening a fraction, ‘I did my duty that day, and I will continue to do it, even if those at the top think that Jaegers are of no further use to the world.’

‘We have a proposition for you, Bilbo,’ cut in Gandalf, ‘an offer of employment, if you like.’

‘Though we have little to offer in terms of salary or benefits,’ said Dís dryly.

‘And what, exactly, is this proposition?’ asked Bilbo, looking to and from Dís and Gandalf.

‘Oh, just a desperate bid to save the world, with little to no chance at success and a huge probability of death,’ Dís said, grinning suddenly and fiercely. ‘How do you like the sound of Ered Luin, Mister Baggins?’
