That Which Begets Affection (Is Silent)
Summary: Business pulls Bilbo to the town of Scary, but it is the journey home that changes everything for Bilbo. Family, it seems, comes in many forms, and quite possibly in the form of a scarred, silent shade of a Dwarrow Bilbo finds in a ditch.

Family, though, is a tricky thing, and there's fun to be had when they come looking for their kin.

|| The day that Bilbo found his Dwarf was a miserable one.

By the time he'd heard the slight whimpered moan off to the left of his walking path, he'd managed to become wet and muddy near to the seat of his breeches, and his jacket was not doing as well as he had hoped at keeping the biting wind from nipping at his sensitive skin. It was a terrible time for Bilbo to have been travelling from Scary, but he'd not wanted to stay in the area any longer than he'd had to, his irritation at having to take the time to travel there in the first place transferring to a need to leave as soon as possible, even when the weather had turned sour and ominous, and he'd trudged on even when the skies had broken and the rain had turned the path to sludge.

He'd not got near as far through the Brockenbores as he'd planned before he'd heard the noise.

Really, if he'd been sensible, he'd have turned right back around and gone back to Scary, and sent for the Bounders to take the pitiful creature off to the Rangers to deal with.

But. But.

Fish & Barrels
Summary: Escaping Thranduil's dungeons via barrels doesn't go to plan. What plan there was.

Or

Why Hobbits don't swim. Most Hobbits.

|| The water was an icy shock, slamming into his small body and forcing the air out his lungs. Bilbo twisted, icy pain shooting through his limbs, and clawed for the surface.

He broke free with a gasp, surprised at how fast he had dragged himself up. Hobbits weren't known for their swimming.

"Well done, Master Baggins." Thorin smiled fiercely at him from where the company waiting in their barrels.

Summary: When (badly hidden) secrets come to light in Trollshaw, the Company decides to set out and rid the threats that plague the Middle Earth, one at a time.

a.k.a. the time travel fic where the whole company goes back.

|| In hindsight, Bilbo Baggins of Bag End should have noticed something amiss about his Dwarves.

He should have noticed they were much more polite and pleasant than the last time they arrived. Each one of them, even Thorin Oakenshield, introduced themselves with a grin and a bow fit for a king or a hero (not that Bilbo knew of this custom). Most of them had tears in their eyes (even Dwalin and Nori) and Bofur had to be held back by both Bifur and Bombur lest he bowl over their Hobbit host.

Her Mother's Daughter
Summary: Bella Baggins has her mother's wanderlust and her father's business sense. We all know how the trip to the Lonely Mountain ought to go...

|| Bella Baggins, as the whole Shire knows, inherited a full share of her infamous mother’s personality, her wanderlust and Tookish love of adventure. But it is impossible for even the stuffiest matron to deny that Bella Baggins also inherited her father’s reliable steadiness and impeccable business sense; and so it is that when Bella Baggins is thirty-three and finally ready to make her very first solo trip out of the Shire, she returns from Rivendell having not only spent three months among the elves, but also having forged a remarkable trade agreement in order to sell the excess produce of the spice gardens which her father so foresightedly planted in the fields around Bag End. The agreement makes her very rich indeed inside of ten years, and her proud father goes to his grave swearing up and down that his daughter is a better businessman than he; her mother, equally proud, watches Bella set out each year with the caravans and wipes away happy tears to see her daughter blossom so.

One of These Days (Again and Again)
Summary: “Right,” Fili said. “We need to all stay alive, then. That shouldn’t be too hard.”

“You try it,” Bilbo muttered. “See how well you do.”

~

By a curse or a blessing from the Valar, Bilbo finds himself repeating the same horrific day of war outside of Erebor again and again. His repeats are always triggered when someone from the company falls. He suffers days and days on his own before the others begin to repeat the day with him.

One would think that with the whole company, an elf king, and a bowman all knowing what was to come, Bilbo would have an easier time getting them all through the day alive.

One would think that, wouldn't they.

Growing Dwarves (And Kingdoms)
Summary: Sometimes, Bilbo finds, not everything goes according to plan.

First an injury and the coming winter delay his leaving Erebor, then word from the Shire leaves him mourning his beloved Bag End. And because getting added to Thorin's council isn't trouble enough, Kili is in love with an elf, Fili may or may not have his eyes on a certain little scribe, everyone seems to think he is a lady hobbit, and Thorin needs to find someone to marry.

Okay. So the last part might not be trouble, exactly, except for the part where it makes Bilbo's rather hopeless attachment even more painful. Or it wouldn't if he hadn't possibly accidentally promised to provide Thorin with an heir... and Dáin just might still be scheming something.

Fortunately, if there's one thing hobbits are good at, it's growing things. And Thorin did promise him a garden.

|| This is my favorite. That one with one with the magic acorn baby and Bilbo giving the youngest dwarrow the sex talk and Dain the matchmaker.

Eats Me Up Inside
"Hobbits are accustomed to being well-fed, but Bilbo's too polite to just push in and grab the way the dwarrow do and there's not even scraps left by the time they've finished. But Bilbo doesn't complain; Thorin already finds him annoying and the others don't seem to care all that much for him either, so he tightens his belt and makes do...until he can't anymore. " HKM Prompt

|| "Careful, we don't know the extent of his head injury-

"It's alright, halfing. Just relax-"

"No, no, please-" he tries but his voice is gone and his head aches furiously; though his vision is oddly distorted and the cold is a strong distraction, he sees Gandalf from behind the familiar and unfamiliar dwarrow faces. He tries to convey a request for help but the wizard just looks at him sadly, never saying a word. They lift the mug to his lips again and he can only turn his face away, his stomach already revolting at the little bit he swallowed. They coo at him but also grumble, a mix of indecipherable Westron and gruff Khuzdul.

"You must eat, " one says and he knows them but can't come up with a name, " You've been asleep for too long, Bilbo."

"Please, " he just wants to gather his barrings, wants the pain stop; don't they know that food will weigh him down, will keep him from running and hiding and fighting as the company needs? He feels himself slipping back into darkness but then there's the smell; he watches as a small bottle is removed from near his face, and it takes him a moment to realize that's what's keeping him awake. By this time, they're forcing broth and tonic down his throat but it just starts to come back up.

"Don't fight us, lad-"

"I mustn't-"

But the healers (he assumes that's what they are and later this is confirmed) don't let him fall back asleep, nor do they relent until his belly is uncomfortably full. He cries weakly as they leave him with worried frowns and conspiratorial whispers, all but one with two curled, grey braids, who pats his hand gently as if he's a child. Gandalf approaches soon after the door to the dimly lit room he's in slams shut (he doesn't recognize this lodging and only later on is he told he had been taken into the mountain for treatment). The tall Man bites his lip, combing a hand through Bilbo's thin, sweat soaked hair.

"Oh, old friend...you'll be alright."

Let your colours bleed (And blend with mine)
Summary: Hobbits glow whenever they are happy. Of course Gandalf forgot to tell the dwarves.

|| The elven dungeons aren’t that bad, from their perspective.

While they get to rest – on bare stone, but rest nonetheless – and eat three sizable meals a day, Bilbo dashes around the stone-carved halls, as quiet as he manages, and steals scraps of food as not to be discovered. He is thin and there are bags under his eyes, and he is so miserable he looks beyond dim: he looks like a shadow.

They can’t make him laugh, because the sound could warn the guards of Bilbo’s presence and hope would be lost then. They can, however, save some of their food – bread and fruit, mostly – to ensure that their hobbit won’t faint from starvation.

And if anyone other than Bombur notices Bilbo flickering ever so weakly whenever he comes around after spending time with Thorin, nobody mentions it and neither does he.

|| Yes please, make them weird.

A Glittering Abyss
Summary: After the Battle of the Five Armies, Thorin has forgiven Bilbo; but Bilbo finds he cannot forgive Thorin.

|| “Please do not go,” Thorin said softly. He was only a few feet away now, awkward with his crutch. He was bleeding through his dressing on one side.

“I must go! I cannot stay!” Bilbo cried wildly. Thorin’s hand was now on his pony’s bridle.

Still Thorin pressed him. “Why must you leave us so soon? And why would you not say goodbye to me before you left?”

Bilbo could not help it. He drew Sting.

“Let go my pony’s bridle,” he said. His voice was high and wavering. The Iron Hills guards were suddenly alert, but Thorin raised his hand to stay them.

“Bilbo,” he said. “Bilbo. You fear me.” Bilbo felt an angry tear roll down his face. He nodded once.

Dead Until Proven Alive
Summary: Bilbo is hungry, dirty and very confused. Why will no one tell him what happened to Thorin Oakenshield.

|| In the Shire, it was polite practice to wait three months until declaring someone officially dead. The hobbits reckoned that after that period, Yavanna in all her glory, had decided to keep what was given rather than heal through the power of her good, green earth. Though for all appearances sake, a hobbit may look dead and gone, it was more akin to a state of hibernation where he waited until he had been placed in the ground to bloom once more, Yavanna willing.

The hobbits were of the earth, from the earth, and when they were injured or seriously ill, they returned to the earth. All knew that hobbits had a special relationship with all things that grew in the wide, green world. What they did not know was that the earth in her turn, cared for her hobbits.

However, like many things, it was just not shared with the ‘big folk.’ The hobbits had their own way of life, no doubt about that, and they were quite content to pray that they did not get injured during the rainy season because who wants to try and clean off mud like that?

You Got Me
Summary: The Company shows their affection for Bilbo in accordance with dwarvish tradition. Bilbo... has no idea why everyone keeps giving him gifts.

(Dwarves give gifts of craft to start friendships or romance. Everybody lives AU, canon-compliant through the first movie.)

|| “Master Baggins,” Ori says, casting a furtive glance back at the table of dwarves. “I wanted to thank you for your gift.”

“Oh!” Bilbo says, surprised. “It was no problem, Master Ori. It’s a small book and one I haven’t read for many years.”

Ori frowns at him. “But in the in scripting, it says—authored by Bungo Baggins. Isn’t that your da?”

“Well, yes. He wrote it for me when I was a fauntling, y’see.”

Ori’s starting to blush. “I should not have asked to borrow it,” he says. “I will return it at once, I’m so sorry, Master Baggins—“

“Have you finished it yet?” Ori’s hesitation is answer enough and Bilbo sighs. “Keep it, Master Ori. It’s doing a world more good informing a curious mind than sitting dusty on my bookshelf.”

Ori wrings his hand. “I will take care with it,” he says. “And see it safely returned to you when I am finished.”

Bilbo takes a long look at him; dusty from travel and earnest. He’s the youngest of them all and possibly the most foolhardy, considering his posturing at Bag End, and Bilbo feels a little sad for him. To be so young and to come on a trip such as this? At least Dwalin and Balin and the others have had a life—at least Fíli and Kíli are reclaiming a birthright!

“You may keep it, Master Ori,” Bilbo says. He smiles, feeling a little mischievous. “Think of it as a gift for having the good sense to inquire first about where the dishes went instead of just tossing them about as soon as you were done.”

Ori’s mouth drops open and he stares so long at Bilbo that Bilbo begins to think he’s made some sort of mistake. Then, to Bilbo’s surprise, Ori begins to blush.

“I am honored by your gift,” he says. Bilbo frowns at him, not sure why Ori seems so touched by something so simple, but then Ori’s pulling something from his loose cardigan. “I had thought to give this to you later, when we were not in everyone’s company, but—“ He shrugs and hands it over to Bilbo.

The Price of Gold (Buried Alive)
Summary: Based on a kink meme prompt (abridged): Thorin (accidentally) buries Bilbo alive under gold

Once the battle is over and Bilbo rescued, Thorin wishes to make amends. But others have set their eyes on the riches in the mountain, dwarven nobles would rather see Dain on the throne of Erebor, Thranduil has concerns due to the dragon sickness and Bard worries about oncoming winter. Making amends is not easy in a surrounding ripe with intrigues, trauma and murder attempts.

Planting a Hobbit
Summary: Bilbo liked Erebor, he really did. Even if everyone seemed convinced he was going to leave.

In which soil causes international incidents, Thorin is over-dramatic, and dwarves are rubbish at keeping secrets. Oh, and they build a garden. Eventually.

|| Fili and Kili were leaning forwards in their chairs now, looking younger than they were in their enthusiasm.

“D'you think he'd like that?” Fili asked at the same time as his brother said “Bilbo needs a garden!”

There was a spark of something, deep in Thorin's gaze, the same kind of single-minded purpose and passion that had led him to reclaim Erebor, that had dragged him across Middle Earth to find a home for his people.

“A garden,” he said, his voice low and powerful, and the group fell silent, simply nodding in agreement. “A garden.”

The Color of Possibility
Summary: When Bilbo puts himself between Thorin and Azog's blade, his mithril shirt protecting them both, it isn't long before some dwarves whisper that 'Oakenshield' might not be the best epithet for their king anymore. But for Bilbo, barred from Thorin's sight since the battle, this new epithet only adds to the sting. Spending his days caring for the recovering princes, Bilbo wonders how much more of this he can take, not suspecting his place at the center of a silent divide in the company.

|| “Your banishment was revoked,” Balin assured him the first time. “But Thorin’s not ready to see you yet. Not after what happened.”

Bilbo took that to mean he wasn’t forgiven for preventing Thorin from killing himself (though it was always possible that Thorin was still bitter over the theft of the Arkenstone), and the news that came from the royal chambers had agreed with him. Dori reported disapprovingly that Thorin ate and slept little, putting everything into the restoration of the mountain. It felt like a return of the dragon sickness, except now Bilbo was the untrustworthy one, instead of Thorin’s kin. As much as he tried to tell himself that at least this was a restoration of the natural order of things, Bilbo couldn’t shake the feeling that Thorin was still trying to kill himself, and this time it was his fault.

But of course all of that was ridiculous. Fíli and Kíli were both still alive, but in a precarious condition. Fíli hadn’t woken since being thrown off the tower, and Kíli’s chest wound had become infected thanks to whatever vile substances Bolg’s blade had been coated with. Of course Thorin would try to distract himself from something so terrible as his nephews hanging on for dear life.

Erebor and Weeds
All Due Care: The momentous first evening that Thorin and Bilbo share a bed, although neither of them notice its momentousness. Prequel snippet to "Beneath the Ever-Bending Sky;" written before the second movie was released, so departs from canon in terms of the events of Laketown.

Adventures and Battles and Deathbed Confessions: "Farewell, good thief." Thorin and Bilbo, after the Battle of the Five Armies.

To Flourish, to Fight, to Run: Thorin catches her hand in his as she touches the gauze. “You still call me Thorin,” he says, softly.

“Well,” she says, trying as hard as she can to sound businesslike, “That’s because you’re not my king.”

“You’re under my mountain,” Thorin points out.

Bilbo scowls, and shakes his hand loose. “I can’t believe you’re arguing not five seconds after you’ve woken up,” she says, pulling the gauze free. It’s mostly healed, an ugly scar that will be there for the rest of his life. “Though perhaps I shouldn’t be surprised.”

Beneath the Ever-Bending Sky: When Thorin summons the company to the Lesser Hall and Bilbo explains what she wants done, there is a long silence, followed by thunderous argument.

“I suppose we shouldn’t have expected better,” Bilbo mutters as Óin and Dwalin bellow at each other.

It’s typical, Thorin thinks, and is disgusted with himself for the rush of fondness he feels.

Jewels in Her Hair
Summary: For Dwarves, braids can carry many meanings depending on their number, style, and position. Bilbo is obviously ignorant of such things, which ends up working well for Thorin. What Bilbo doesn't know won't hurt her, after all.

That doesn't mean that Bilbo won't be out to hurt someone (Thorin) when she finds out.

|| Bilbo’s laugh at the resulting protest made Thorin turn her head towards the Hobbit, and –

It must have been a trick of the light, Thorin decided, eyes narrowed. Yes, Bilbo had just happened to be riding through a patch of sunlight that turned her mousy hair almost golden. It was up in its usual crown of braids around her head but a few stray locks had escaped and curled becomingly around her ears and at the nape of her neck.

Thorin couldn’t stop staring.

Bilbo’s gaze met hers. Whatever mirth had been in her eyes slowly ebbed as she studied Thorin’s expression; she didn’t look away, though, and instead put her chin up proudly as she passed the King.

Thorin most definitely was not entranced by this. She was intrigued, however, and felt out of sorts enough that she completely missed Gandalf’s amused smile.

Silly Trinkets
Summary: There are no words adequate to describe the Last Homely House or the wonders of Lord Elrond’s hospitality, which seems impossible to strain even under the burden of thirteen empty dwarfish stomachs and their even more trying attitudes.

Having played hostess to those same stomachs in her time, Briar is duly impressed and endeavors to add to the burden as little as possible. This is made somewhat more difficult by the fact that elves, apparently, are better able to differentiate between hobbit gentlemen and hobbit ladies that dwarves seem to be. A fact Briar learned when Lord Elrond pulled her to one side after their meal and put her into the hands of his daughter and her women with a gentle smile.

Briar feels that she probably owes him a swift kick in the shins for that.

|| “I’ve never had the knack of correcting others without giving offence.” She admits, which is perhaps nine-tenths of the problem; her own inability to reveal the truth with anything resembling tact. “It seemed easier to let it be.” She pauses and adds, “Please forgive me. You Got a Kiss For Me
Summary: The obligatory "Bilbo returns home thinking Thorin is dead, only for his true love to come for him". Except with two true loves. And a head injury.

Not like I can write a trope to plan, though, is it?

|| He had not seen any of his Dwarrows. Not a one, amongst those moving about the camp, not sitting wearily with the other soldiers around fires and cook pots, not limping about near the entrance of any of the healing tents.

The Master could be wrong. His Dwarrows might be in the tents themselves, might even be in one tent, safe and whole! Thorin was a prince, a king now, surely they would be granted a tent of their own in which to rest and deliberate after the battle. Really, they could be back in the mountain, and wondering where he was!

Or they could still be terribly angry with him.

Let it labamrazûkh
Summary: Bilbo is feeling... off. Not sad, not really, well, maybe?

He wasn't really sure what he was feeling, just that it was the most wonderful time of the year. But not really all that wonderful.

Of course, dwarrows are an unpredictable lot.

|| As for the winter celebrations, Durin's Day was the most important, being the first day of the season, and the start of their calendar year.

Which was where the problem began.

Bilbo had found -and here, he should note, he had only experienced this twice since the mountain had actually been settled, so he could not really say for sure if it were so always- that after Durin's Day, the Dwarrows of Erebor tended to turn.... quiet. It was the start of their new year, Durin's Day, and so afterwards, the Dwarrows tended to turn their attentions with great fervour to their crafts, a renewal of their excitement in wake of a whole new year, Bilbo had gathered. There was nothing wrong with that, at all. Bilbo could understand that there was a time and place for all things.

It was just... well. Fine. So it got a bit lonely when they were all busy tucking themselves away in their forges and studios and mines and such for days at a time. Especially when Bilbo knew what was happening in the Shire, come this time of year.

Er... Mistletoe?
Summary: Bilbo's first winter in Erebor, he decides to indulge in some Hobbit traditions. His stupid Dwarrows don't seem to mind. Plus, it has the added bonus of taking his mind off what may be happening between himself and that ridiculously handsome King of his.

Heyerette expressed a desire for Christmas Bagginshield Fix-it to make owies feel better for the festive season.

|| Three days later, the mountain was awash with trees.

There were trees in corners, trees on pedestals and trees in miniature forests in the middle of halls. Trees hanging upside down from the ceiling, and one lot trying to mount them from the walls like odd bristling torches.

They were stunning.

"This is completely ridiculous," Bilbo muttered, gently setting a silver bell to tinkling.

"I think it's quite pretty," Kíli said, circling one of the newest trees.

"Fancy doing all this to indulge my silly Hobbit customs."

Kíli grinned and nudged him, pulling him into his side to hug him one-armed.

"Uncle would do just about anything for you, Bilbo."

Bilbo did not know what to say to that. He sighed instead, wrapping his arm around Kíli's waist in return, and turning them to look again at the tree in the centre of the mini forest in the Hall of Kings. It was, in Bilbo's humble opinion, one of the prettiest so far.

|| It's so lovely and warm. :D

One-Sided Conversations
Summary: "Thank you for listening," Thorin said, getting to his feet. "I hope to be able to return the favour, one day."

The man on the bed didn't respond, but since he'd been in a coma for longer than Thorin had known him, that wasn't entirely surprising.

|| He closed his eyes.

He needed to sleep, and he needed to eat, and he needed to shut down his brain for a few hours so that he could process what had happened, so he could get a hold of himself enough to stop himself from acting as if he was already grieving, when there was nothing yet to grieve.

He opened his eyes again, his gaze dragging across the room, and he froze.

What he had taken to be an empty room was in fact occupied – very much so – by a person in the bed, lying completely still, wired to a host of mutely humming machinery. The room was bare of the usual paraphanalia of a patient, without cards or bouquets or books; there was no suitcase on the small rack in the corner and no dinner tray on the fold out table, although he had seen the staff dispensing evening meals when he had been wandering.

Just the figure on the bed, nothing more than the contours of a body beneath layers of sheets, and the shadow of hair on a pillow; he could see little else.

“I…” he started, meaning to apologise for bursting in, but the door clicked open before he could say anything, and a nurse walked in, his neat, silver hair pushed back from his face. The nurse stared blankly at him for a moment in surprise, before smiling warmly.

“My apologies,” he said, reaching for the clipboard hanging on the end of the bed. “I didn’t expect to see anyone in here – he doesn’t get many visitors.”

“A garden.”

Made and Remade the Necklace of Songs
Summary: In a Middle Earth where dwarves dream of Heartsongs and hobbits carry the name of their fated partner as private Mark, Bilbo Baggins had never been able to properly translate the strange rows of runes inscribed on his wrist.

And likewise, Thorin Oakenshield had never imagined he would hear the voice of his Heartsong from a fussy little gentlehobbit.

|| “What do hobbits have, then,” Kili said suddenly, too loud in the silence that had fallen, but it managed to break the delicate shell of tension well enough. Dori inhaled deeply, then smiled at his little brother, ruffling Ori’s smooth hair.

Chewing on a tougher morsel of stew, Fili hummed inquiringly. “Aye, what, if not a song? Or are you not born for partners, like men and elves?”

|| That one where Thorin does a lot of riduclous things to see Bilbo's wrist.

King's Ransom
Summary: Bilbo is quite convinced that all the problems plaguing them in the mountain - specifically, Thorin acting quite unlike himself - stem from the blasted Arkenstone. The thing is probably cursed, and it's up to him to get it as far away from Thorin as he can - and while he's at it, he might as well try to stop a war before it starts.

Rather than offering Bard and Thranduil the Arkenstone, Bilbo offers to give them his share of the treasure if they will please go away. Unfortunately, neither of them is willing to believe Thorin will hand it over - which leads to a ransom plan that is, in Bilbo's opinion, quite ridiculous and doomed to fail from the start. But at least that blasted stone is out of the mountain.

|| An astounded look came over Gandalf, and he straightened. "Mithril!" he said, looking at Bilbo with renewed surprise.

"He said it was a gift. A token of our friendship."

"A gift? While he is so jealous of the gold?"

Bilbo frowned. "I don't believe he sees it the same way. He said the gold was ours, and ours alone."

"Hm! Well then," Gandalf said, an amused smile crinkling the corners of his eyes. He turned to enter the tent again without so much as a by-your-leave. "Thranduil, you will be pleased to know that Bard is right. Thorin would most certainly exchange Bilbo's share of the treasure for him - in fact, I am quite convinced he would do anything if he could be assured of Bilbo's safety."

"You can't be serious!" Bilbo cried. "I was - it was - I was jesting!"

Battles of the Brothers
Summary: The Company of Thorin Oakenshield was made up of brothers.

Entirely too many brothers.

Brothers everywhere: being underfoot, being overprotective, telling embarrassing stories around the campfire, arguing over portions, tucking in at night, stealing blankets, double-checking packs, squabbling over watch duties, helping each other on ponies, shoving each other off ponies, sharing dried meats, nicking dried meats. Family dynamics and lifetimes of deep, abiding affection (and annoyance, oh, so much annoyance, and knowing every single button) combined into a sure recipe for disaster.

|| Kili scoffed. “Uncle wouldn’t hurt us.” He offered a feral grin. “We’d be no use to the quest that way.”

Dwalin cuffed the young prince on the back of the head. “I’m telling you he’d be a horrible addition to the enemy’s camp. YOU lot don’t remember Erebor-”

“I do,” Gloin insisted, though he’d been barely ten at the time.

“-but I do. He may be the King of Grumpiness now, but take my word for it. Thorin dealt with Frerin every day for over fifty years, and he still has Dis to contend with, who’s twice as dangerous. He’s no lightweight when it comes to siblings.” Dwalin cut his hands through the air in an absolutely not gesture. “Take my word for it; we do not want Thorin involved in any way.”
