Artificial Sweeteners Aren’t Dangerous – Gid M-K; Health Nerd – Medium
Artificial sweeteners are a perennial concern. Once every few months, we will hear a terrifying story that they are out to get us, like a silent assassin in the night who breaks into your house to give you diabetes.

Fortunately for Diet Coke lovers like myself, most of these stories are wrong.

Artificial sweeteners don’t cause cancer, they don’t make you gain weight, and there’s no good evidence that they cause diabetes or metabolic disease. And, despite recent headlines, there’s definitely no reason to believe that they are bad for your gut microbiome.

You can keep drinking that sweet, sweet diet drink.

YouTube Sensation Super Mario Logan Is Coming For Your Kids
At the same time, YouTube presents a fertile environment for bigotry. So it cannot be entirely surprising that a young person who has breathed its air since seventh grade, while being paid gobs of money to do so, might absorb and recirculate some of the platform’s more insidious elements without pausing to weigh their meaning. Before Thirtyacre created Super Mario Logan, YouTube created Logan Thirtyacre.

Data from the Lumen Database Highlights How Companies Use Fake Websites and Backdated Articles to Censor Google’s Search Results :: Blog :: Lumen
Businesses have become increasingly creative in their attempts to misuse the DMCA to remove negative reviews from the Internet. They have gone to great lengths to falsely claim copyright infringement with the intent of taking down content from Google’s search results and review sites.

One such tactic is the “stolen article” scam, which uses fake websites and backdated articles to remove content online. As described in a previous blog post, the scam typically plays out as follows:

A company (or individual) will come across some undesirable content online, which they believe will cause them reputational harm. Desperate to censor the content at any cost, and lacking a valid case for defamation, they will often seek the assistance of a “reputation management” agency. These agencies will proceed to create a website masquerading as a legitimate news source, whose sole purpose is to host the very content their client is seeking to remove, usually disguised in the form of a news article. The article is then backdated to give it the appearance of being published prior to the allegedly infringing content. The reputation management agency then files a DMCA notice on behalf of the “journalist” who wrote the review, claiming it was stolen from their client’s website, all the while shielding the true client’s name with an alias designed to make it difficult to trace back to them.

A Surprising Effect of Sugar on the Immune System - The Atlantic
Do you feed a fever and starve a cold? Or is it the opposite? I can never remember. I never cared to. I thought it was just something people said when they didn’t know what else to say.

Ruslan Medzhitov cares. He’s a distinguished professor of immunobiology at Yale. And in the journal Cell today, his team showed some dramatic benefits to starving a bacterial illness—but feeding a viral illness.

Speaking while exercising? Not if you want to get fitter - The Globe and Mail
The Queen’s researchers have a surprisingly simple suggestion, which they tested in a separate experiment: “We also found that prescribing exercise at an intensity where participants could not speak comfortably resulted in consistently high blood lactate responses,” Bonafiglia said.

This approach, known as the Talk Test, involved asking participants to count to 30 at “a regular conversational pace and volume” while cycling. If they could do it comfortably, they were asked to speed up slightly until it began to get difficult.

And that’s pretty much it.

In an age of pervasive fitness technology and self-monitoring, there’s some irony in the triumph of mere conversation as a more sensitive barometer of exercise intensity than the expensive gold-standard laboratory approach. But it’s also a reminder of an unvarnished truth that athletes have always known: To get fitter, you have to work hard, no matter what your wearable tech tells you.

Argue with your customers - Rockstar Coders
I see this same method of debate in play in our customer conversations here at Rockstar. When we get on a phone call, and a potential customer asks for X, Y, and Z. There's a natural inclination to just say yes. Saying yes, means we can get to sign that contract sooner. Checks get cut sooner.

But we don't just say "yes."

Before anything gets signed, we actually participate in some good natured debate with our customers about what they want built. We'll interrogate why X and Y are important. What assumptions have been made? What assumptions haven't been tested yet? Can we do something other than X and Y that are easier, cheaper, and quicker to build before we get to X and Y? Can we skip doing Z altogether?

Asking all these questions results in risk for us. It gives our customers more time to chat with competitors. It elongates the time until checks are cut. And it often results in projects that are smaller and cheaper than a client had originally budgeted for. That's not how agencies typically like to make money :)

But from years of doing this, we know our best work comes from challenging our customers assumptions to better articulate what they need. And the result is better projects that meet and often exceed expectations because they have our customers' most creative thinking behind them.

Announcing Azure Pipelines with unlimited CI/CD minutes for open source | Blogg | Microsoft Azure
With the introduction of Azure DevOps today, we’re offering developers a new CI/CD service called Azure Pipelines that enables you to continuously build, test, and deploy to any platform or cloud. It has cloud-hosted agents for Linux, macOS, and Windows, powerful workflows with native container support, and flexible deployments to Kubernetes, VMs, and serverless environments.

Microsoft is committed to fueling open source software development. Our next step in this journey is to provide the best CI/CD experience for open source projects. Starting today, Azure Pipelines provides unlimited CI/CD minutes and 10 parallel jobs to every open source project for free. All open source projects run on the same infrastructure that our paying customers use. That means you’ll have the same fast performance and high quality of service. Many of the top open source projects are already using Azure Pipelines for CI/CD, such as Atom, CPython, Pipenv, Tox, Visual Studio Code, and TypeScript – and the list is growing every day.
