“YOU DON’T NEED A DROP IN EVERY TRACK You know what you really want from music when you’re attempting to dance in a dark, crowded room, full of people who are off their face? Repetition. Not massive tedious lulls followed by painful loud noises. Even drum and bass works best when it’s a constant, steady assault, those subtle changes that mark one track from the next being the bits that make Bermondsey boys on bail take their shirts off and twist their own jaws into “Z” shapes. The EDM brigade seem to have taken their attitude towards pacing from the likes of Pendulum and early Slipknot, where most of the track is just a superfluous build up for a drop that sounds like an explosion on a ghost train.”

The Continuum of Cute
Nina Katchadourian: "The Continuum of Cute invites the viewer to arrange 100 pictures of different animals, all found on the Internet, in order of cuteness. A giant inter-species beauty contest, the project investigates both our individual and collective sense of the "cute" at the same time as it indulges the anthropomorphic qualities that are often embedded in our sense of the word."

From the feature in Magnetic Magazine http://www.magneticmag.com/2013/04/sounds-spaces-001-max-cooper-the-british-museum/ Sounds & Spaces 001 Max Cooper - Synesthetes Museum A mix based on the British Museum Featuring a mix of 12th century Tibetan monks song, one of the first ever recordings of music, made by Thomas Edison on a wax cylinder in 1888, poetic spoken word, 9th century Gregorian Chant, A call to the lama from afar, some unreleased exclusives, 9/8 techno, traditional Chinese music mixed with rude glitch, and a binaural museum. ______________________________________ The brief for this mix was to make something inspired by an architectural space. When I was doing my Post-Doc at UCL I used to go the British Museum to relax, and work in the beautiful library there, so I chose the space for the mix. I wanted to capture the ambient atmosphere in the central courtyard, so I did some binaural recording to include in the mix. I also wanted to make the mix something of an exploration through history and ideas in line with the contents of the museum, so I brought in lots of disparate music spanning the centuries and continents. I also mixed it in a way to be like a journey though the museum, turning corners and regularly coming across something totally different and unexpected, with each track being like a different exhibit. Hence the name of the mix, in that, each piece of music almost has a visual content. Icebreaker: Eno’s Apollo and Kraftwerk Uncovered | Wales Arts Review
"Since 2009, the contemporary amplified ensemble Icebreaker have been collaborating with London’s Science Museum on an investigation of the relationship between electronic music and live acoustic performance, starting with Brian Eno’s Apollo and now continuing with Kraftwerk Uncovered. Apollo toured internationally in 2010-12 and Kraftwerk Uncovered will do the same from 2014. Icebreaker’s Artistic Director James Poke writes about the project and the light it has thrown upon this iconic material."

The best natural history specimen in the world (did not get thrown on a fire) | UCL UCL Museums & Collections Blog
"On a visit to the zoology section a cupboard was opened before us, it was filled with skulls, dried fish and a couple of boxes. As the history of this cupboard was explained – it was Tradescant’s Museum – the oldest in the country – it suddenly dawned on me what was in those boxes. And that we were going to see it.

Fire and Ice (poem) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"...prominent astronomer Harlow Shapley claims to have inspired "Fire and Ice".[2] Shapley describes an encounter he had with Robert Frost a year before the poem was published in which Frost, noting that Shapley was the astronomer of his day, asks him how the world will end. Shapley responded that either the sun will explode and incinerate the Earth, or the Earth will somehow escape this fate only to end up slowly freezing in deep space."

Made, Unmade: Julie Brook - London
"Having roamed and witnessed the remote, the unexplored, the unmonitored and the unmarked for the past 20 years, artist Julie Brook is now taking her topographical travels and is decanting them into a new exhibition in the Wapping Project´s Boiler Room. Made, Unmade is the filmic documentation of Brook´s in situ sculptures, created in the deserts of Libya and Namibia, out of local rocks and stones Brooks dug out of the earth herself. The result is a film installation which records the transient duration of these sculptures; from the grueling construction process to the pieces themselves."

BBC News - Fighting 'fatbergs' with the chief flusher of London
"Earlier this year, Thames Water came across a 15-tonne mass of fat and waste products in Kingston-upon-Thames. The size of a double-decker bus, this congealed clot of waste was the largest "fatberg" ever discovered in Britain."

A BBC crew headed underground to meet the people who tackle "fatbergs" and keep the city's sewerage network flowing.

The Remarkable Properties of Mythological Social Networks | MIT Technology Review
"They discovered that while the networks associated with Beowulf and the Iliad had many of the properties of real social networks, the network associated with Tain was less realistic... That led them to conclude that the societies described in the Iliad and Beowulf are probably based on real ones, whereas the Tain appears more artificial." & The Odyssey looks real too

Gabion: The amoebic house: Simon Conder returns to Dungeness.
"The old cottage was stripped back to its original core of a section of railway carriage - which itself dates from the 1870s. But instead of extending that, Conder designed a house that absorbed it, like an amoeba. Now the old carriage - treated as a found object, complete with scabby paintwork and with some entirely unpainted sections - stands in the main living-dining area and acts as the house's kitchen. There is no glass in its windows and its ends are open, so it is a solid yet skeletal structure. When you are in it, you are only partially enclosed."
