Scientists discover mechanics of asthmatic bronchial spasm | Yale West Campus
ed by Andre Levchenko, Director of the Yale Systems Biology Institute, the team found new types of positive negative feedback loops can drive the bronchospasm following a trigger such as smoke. Following initial constriction, the airways activate a cellular machinery that detects mechanical stress, initiating the secretion of hormone-like compounds which can induce an additional constriction or relax it.

New evidence of a long-term planetary thermostat to remove excess CO2 | YaleNews
“What our paper details is a pulse of carbonate burial in the aftermath of the PETM,” Penman said. “We analyzed a sediment core in which, before the PETM, there is no carbonate at all, and then in the recovery phase of the event, it has lots of carbonate.”
“We believe this process is going to operate in response to carbon emissions related to human activity,” Penman said. “But if the PETM is any guide, it will take tens of thousands of years.”

Researchers explain how LSD changes perception | YaleNews
The new data indicate that LSD triggers a reduction of functional connections between regions of the brain governing cognitive processes and increases connectivity in brain networks associated with sensory functions. It does so by stimulating a particular receptor for the neurotransmitter serotonin (serotonin-2A or 5HT2A receptor). The 5HT2A receptor has been implicated in the regulation of mood and cognition.

White Liberals Present Themselves as Less Competent in Interactions with African-Americans | Yale Insights
The researchers found that liberal individuals were less likely to use words that would make them appear highly competent when the person they were addressing was presumed to be black rather than white. No significant differences were seen in the word selection of conservatives based on the presumed race of their partner. “It was kind of an unpleasant surprise to see this subtle but persistent effect,” Dupree says. “Even if it’s ultimately well-intentioned, it could be seen as patronizing.”

Yale Alumni Magazine: frats are back (Oct 98)
Another organization, the 121-year-old St. Anthony Hall, while officially a chapter of Delta Psi, is not usually counted as a fraternity; a coed group, it is an anomalous blend of fraternity, literary society, and senior society.)

‘David Pease: Notes from the Road’ on display
An exhibition featuring art work of Koerner fellow David Pease will be on view at the Henry Koerner Center from October 5 through December 9. The exhibition, titled David Pease: Notes from the Road, displays twenty narrative paintings, all of which convey the back stories to journeys Pease took between 1994 and 2009. Yale faculty member Jessica Helfand, essayist for the exhibition catalogue, writes: “David Pease makes work that is controlled by accuracy, but thrills to the promises of chance. He is principled, but playful, at once focused and far-ranging in his appeal to the unusual reference.” She adds that “in [Pease’s] paintings, there are magical gestures of illusion and deft sleights of hand. There are nods to history, odes to memory, references to moments of delight … and sadness. There are hints of compositional precision and geographic allusion, gestures of wit and grace notes of whimsy. And throughout it all, there is a deep and abiding determination to tell a story.”

The origins of the tomb | Features | Yale Alumni Magazine
The first step was to incorporate the club in the State of Connecticut as a trust; they called it the Russell Trust Association. Now, a proper corporation could hold fee-simple title to the remarkable structure that announced, if any were in doubt, that Skull and Bones was here to stay.
