In The Forest, Dark And Deep - Welsh_Woman - Teen Wolf (TV) [Archive of Our Own]
The woods have been Stiles' home for all his life, so when something Dark starts to creep in, it's obvious that his world is going to change...

In more ways than one.

One Long Breath of Air - Chash - The 100 (TV) [Archive of Our Own]
Clarke Griffin--second cousin, once removed--is the next in a long line of relatives Madi has been sent to live with. All of them are nice and well-meaning, but none of them really want her. They're not ready to put up with having a first kid or another kid or--her, really. They don't really want to deal with her.

Just because Clarke is younger than she expected and lives in a weird house in a small town full of friendly people, it doesn't mean this time is going to be different. Madi knows exactly how this goes.

Look, Derek is the worst. Everyone knows that. Their fearless leader is a total and complete failwolf.

Which means the rest of them? Are kind of the worst too. They’re a ramshackle, slap dashed, sorry excuse for a pack that’s about a half second away from getting one of them killed. And this is a problem, because Stiles would really like to survive high school. Thanks.

Still, no one deserves what Derek has gone through. Nobody.

And it’s about time somebody told him that.

Izuki had gotten himself into many messes over the years...Come to think of it, most of his messes involved animals. Comically he thinks, this is no different.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina - A Midwinter's Tale, and its Problems
Gryla and the Yulelads: their advent (if you will) didn’t reveal anything new or interesting about our lead characters. Even Madam Satan largely sat this one out, allowing Sabrina to borrow her Book of the Dead and building an elaborate voodoo gingerbread house of the Spellman’s residence, but all she really ended up doing was putting out the yule log long enough for the Yulelads to play some pranks.
As for the B-plot of Susie being kidnapped by Bartel the Santa-Demon, though the episode did end with a grim end for Bartel and a new home for the souls of his wax children with Grylda, like Grylda herself, it didn’t really do anything for the plot or character development, but also wasn’t interesting/scary enough to work on its own.
The return of Sabrina’s mother, Diana, should have been what held this episode together in order to give a teary, Christmas Special-worthy conclusion, but instead it again felt like an after-thought. In her final return, she says her unfinished business was making sure Sabrina was loved. It could have been a wonderful moment, but the episode wasn’t at all about how much her aunts love her … it was about how they were all running after Yulelads and Grylda and trying to save Susie and figuring out what to do with Leticia, which made that final acknowledgement feel hollow. We know Sabrina’s aunts love her, that’s been clear throughout the entire series and never once in doubt. What was it about Diana’s brief experiences here that convinced her though?

In 'Fantastic Beasts', J.K. Rowling Fails at Writing Characters of Colour
Rowling fails to create empathetic, three-dimensional portrayals of her characters of colour.
Rowling’s greatest flaw as a scriptwriter is Nagini’s submissiveness to her fate, and lack of desire to change her future. Instead, she’s pushed aside at the expense of other characters’ developments.
Rowling fails to imbue Leta, arguably the most promising character in this film, with the traits of her most successful protagonists—self-determination and resilience. Instead, Rowling unintentionally turns Leta, a mixed-race woman, into the “tragic mulatto” trope as a character born and bred of tragedy, unhappiness, and unbelonging.
Beyond Yusuf’s path for vengeance, he is yet another character of colour whose childhood trauma drives his present-day existence. Once Yusuf realizes that Corvus is dead, his character’s purpose and role in the plot is lost.
Rowling likewise glosses over the racist and colonialist history that inspires Leta’s birth, Yusuf’s revenge, and Nagini’s constant imprisonment.

Indians and Harry Potter (Dear JK Rowling: We’re Still Here)
None of the Native American “characters” in Rowling’s story of the founding of Ilvermorny had names, and were only mentioned in passing. Only 2 tribes out of literally hundreds are named: Narragansett and Wampanoag. But Isolt Sayre, the founder and an Irish woman, sure had a hell of a backstory. The story in itself normalizes colonialism, and makes it sound, again, like we welcomed the European invaders with open arms: a lie that continues to be perpetuated by white people who don’t want to acknowledge that America is stolen land and don’t want to think about what really happened here and what continues to happen here. The description of the Ilvermorny’s humble beginnings feels so much like assimilation; they taught the Native American children the more sophisticated wand magic, of course, in exchange to learn their own ways. Something in me doubts that their ways were taken very seriously. I desperately hope you prove me wrong, Jo.

This doesn’t even begin to cover the Houses themselves. Let’s keep in mind that lions, badgers, serpents, and eagles are very much creatures you can find on the Discovery channel. Here are the Native American origins and tribal affiliations on Pukwudgies, the Wampus Cat, the Thunderbird, and Horned Serpents. Ilvermorny has nothing uniquely American about it; it’s basically American Hogwarts with Native American cultures pasted on top of it for a lazy excuse of creativity. And die-hard Potterheads, a term I used to covet, eat it all up because we are starving for more, never mind the cultural appropriation. Who cares? We have more magic. Indians aren’t relevant anymore anyway. Do they even exist? Eh, they should get over it.
She could have just treated us as human beings, ones who have character and life and humanity. She could have created her own magical creatures, like the ones she did in the world of Hogwarts, or used the ones she had before and tweaked them for regional changes. Hell, she could have even kept skinwalkers and Thunderbird and Pukwudgies– just give them the respect and the reverence and the stories that they deserve. Don’t claim them to be Animagi or goblins or phoenix relatives. Name the tribes they come from. Don’t make them servants to the white settlers. They’re not yours to commodify, or to give permission to your fans to commodify. Because when I see people write “I’m a Thunderbird!!” in the comment section of a Buzzfeed article and try to compare them to the Hogwarts houses Rowling created, it just hurts.

Leta Lestrange's Storyline In 'The Crimes Of Grindelwald' Is The Last Straw For Me As A Black 'Harry Potter' Fan
Rowling’s history of magic in America was accused of showing a simplistic, white feministic take on American history while also appropriating Native American culture at the same time. At the very least, Rowling just seems committed to representing people of color in her new wizarding world franchise without considering that good representation is more than just casting. If she had, she wouldn’t have written Leta the way that she did.
I’m done being asked to be content with characters like incompetent Madam President Seraphina Picquery (Carmen Ejogo) and abused Leta Lestrange, neither of whom were allowed to let their identities as black women in a white-dominated world intersect with their identities as women in a male-dominated world to create a fully-realized character. I’m done consuming new additions to the wizarding world that raised and influenced me personally and creatively, when those new additions do little but harm me in the end, especially as Rowling continues to be a controversial figure who refuses to acknowledge or learn from criticism. I’m just done.

How American Horror Story: Apocalypse Should Have Ended
Since Episode 4, we know where the main storyline is heading: the witches need to stop Michael from ending the world - a confrontation between these two magical powers.
What the current ending did right:
1. It cleared up events set up throughout the season (eg, how the witches survived the apocalypse)
2. Great physical effects (eg, Madison's head blowing up)
But, emotionally and plot-wise, the ending had three weaknesses:
1. The build-up. It's not until Episode 4 that we learn what this season is about - ie, the witches must stop Michael. It promises an epic magical battle that we never get. Because Michael is so much more powerful than the witches, his confrontation with Madison, Marie Laveau, Coco, and Cordelia, it's not a fair (or suspenseful) fight. It was a one-sided massacre that the commentator would have forgiven if it would have resulted in giving Mallory the powers necessary to be a match for Michael. Instead, Mallory goes back in time to confront a less-powerful Michael, killing him a non-magical way (running him over with a Range Rover).
2. The ending meant that nothing mattered. The season focused on preventing the apocalypse only to learn it will happen anyway, because the Anti-Christ will still get born. You root for the witches to win throughout the season, only to learn the apocalypse will still happen, anyway. This includes unintended consequences of re-setting the timeline: Cordelia won't resurrect Myrtle Snow, Tate and Violet won't be reconciled, Moira won't be set free from the house to be with her mother, and Marie Laveau won't be freed from Papa Legba.
3. Tim and Emily seem to have been created solely to enable the ending we're given - an example of characters in the service of story, rather than the other way around. Because we don't know Tim and Emily, the shock of their child being the son of Satan doesn't have a stronger pay-off.
Proposed changes to ending; what would provide the most emotional and engaging ending?
1. Just as Michael isn't really a warlock, what if Mallory weren't really a witch, but is instead the archangel Michael, with an ability to manipulate time? This provides a foil to Michael. The witches can still battle Michael and given her enough time as well as the sacrifice needed for Mallory's powers as an archangel to manifest themselves.
Mallory goes back in time, inadvertently taking Michael with her. They return to Murder House, which is built on a gateway to hell and serves as a prison to the ghost-characters from Season 1.
Mallory would still need to kill young Michael, but she'd have the adult, fully-developed Michael to contend with. Also, the ghosts in Murder House would take sides in the battle.
Mallory would prevail and Murder House destroyed, releasing its ghosts - a fitting ending to Seasons 1, 3, and 9. The Murder House ghosts would have closure, the witches would survive and be heroes, and you'd have a major magical / supernatural battle as the conclusion, as promised since Episode 4 of this season.

The Witch Continues to Enchant as a Feminist Symbol
Lately, witches have moved from the edges of the action to become the plot themselves. “Wil-o-Wisp,” a video work by the artist Rachel Rose, which debuted last May at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, is set in 16th-century agrarian England and concerns a fictional mystic named Elspeth Blake. On a night when there is a full blood-red moon, her family’s house catches fire and she disappears, only to turn up a few towns over 30 years later. Meanwhile, Kiernan Shipka is starring in “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,” a new series about the teenage witch from Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, the creator of “Riverdale,” and Chloë Sevigny is at work on a short film she wrote about self-proclaimed witches in contemporary culture. Last month saw the release of “Suspiria,” Luca Guadagnino’s remake of the 1977 horror film, in which the matrons of a Martha Graham-style dance school are revealed to be members of a secret and violent coven. Set along the border between East and West Berlin, where echoes of wartime anxiety persist, the women have little need for men or society — an independence that attests to their strength as much as any feat of magic.
