8-string violin
Somewhere between a Hardanger fiddle and a viola d'amore lies this charming instrument. It began life as a simple Chanot-style violin, probably of Asian manufacture, but some mad genius has grafted a pegbox extension onto it and added four sympathetic strings, which you can tune to match the open strings or to other pitches of your choice.

Unlike a traditional Hardanger, it has standard violin specs (apart from the obvious) and no decorations. Ebony fingerboard, spruce top, and maple back and sides of very faint narrow curl. As far as I can tell, all eight of the pegs are the micro-gear variety that all the cool kids are using these days, so it doesn't need fine tuners. It has a Fishman M200 mic/pickup combo wired to a stereo Carpenter jack, and comes in a very nice Protec ProPac semi-hardshell adjustable case that has plenty of room for the extended peghead. It's had a recent pro setup, and the outfit includes a bow and a shoulder rest. This would be an ideal way to delve into the mysterious world of sympathetic strings without paying an arm and a leg for the privilege.

Sympathetic strings like a hardingfele, but built mostly like a classic violin.
