The Wild Pontiac Tojan Was the F-Body Supercar Made to Kill Ferraris
As someone who’s been working at this glorious website for the better part of this decade now, I don’t often run into total surprises anymore—especially overpowered American ones from the Radwood era. You can be forgiven for not knowing what the Pontiac Tojan is. I didn’t either, until this Carfection video dropped yesterday. But it is a truly bananas machine that deserves more attention.
Basically, you take a third-generation Firebird (the coolest Firebird—fight me), send it off to Knudsen Automotive, give it a tuned V8, add a beefed-up suspension and toss on some of the craziest bodywork this side of a Countach. It even came with a giant wing, if you wanted.
I know, this sounds like the insane fever dream of a guy who still wears Whitesnake t-shirts everywhere and ate some bad oysters. But it as real. General Motors actually did this between 1985 and 1991, and the result is the Tojan—the closest you could come to owning KITT in real life, minus the autonomous driving and the backtalk from the computer.

Carbon-Bodied Dodge Demon With 1,203-HP Twin-Turbo V-8 Is Satan's Favorite Ride - The Drive
The engine sound alone will wake up the dead.
Tired of reading about what Tesla is up to or how many miles per gallon the world's newest plug-in hybrid can achieve? We've got you covered. Behold this twin-turbocharged Dodge Demon that's so stupidly loud and powerful, the engine noise alone could wake up the dead.
It's called the Speedkore Demon, and as we previously shared with you, it stole the hearts and wallets of muscle car aficionados at the 2018 SEMA show. While a previous video by Speedkore showed us the Demon's carbon fiber body and other goodies being developed, a new video recently released by That Racing Channel shows the bad boy getting manhandled by NHRA star and all-around badass Leah Pritchett.

Why you should be excited for the Lynk & Co 03 Cyan | DriveTribe
Cyan Racing has completed an intensive development programme for the 528-horsepower Lynk & Co 03 Cyan Concept. This new vehicle has been designed to be a fast road-legal car that's fully track-capable when the owner fancies burning some rubber around a circuit.
The Cyan Concept utilises the same technology as found in the Lynk & Co 03 TCR race cars that Cyan Racing will compete with in the FIA World Touring Car Cup this year. This means that the new road car should certainly have race pedigree, straight out of the box.
Powering this bright blue machine is a turbocharged two-litre engine that produces a monumental 528-horsepower. This is a quite a lot considering the juice comes from a rather modest four-pot engine that only drives the two front wheels.
This remarkable power output has been achieved by the team that made the engines from the 2017 World Championship-winning 1.6-litre Volvo engine and the well-praised V8 Volvo engine for the Australian Supercars programme of Cyan Racing. In short, these guys know what their way around an engine.
Mattias Evensson, head of engine development at Cyan Racing said: "What you aim for when developing a race engine does not differ much from when developing an engine for a performance road car. You do not only want the engine to deliver a lot of power, but also combining the power with a high level of drivability."
0-62 mph - 4.4 seconds
0-124 mph - 10 seconds
Top speed - 192 mph
528hp at 7800 rpm
504Nm at 4500-7000 rpm
Weight - 1287 kg

The 1600-HP Koenigsegg Jesko – Insanely Fast, Technically Fascinating
Named after the father of the company's CEO and featuring a crazy transmission, the latest Koenigsegg is a helluva tribute.
The Swedish hypercar maker Koenigsegg does it again with the Jesko, which is even faster and more technologically fascinating than the Agera.
The Jesko features the new Light Speed nine-speed multi-clutch automatic transmission, which was developed in-house.
Owning a Jesko will cost about $3 million, with deliveries (including to the United States) starting sometime in 2020.
Crafting a worthy successor to a hypercar as bonkers as the Koenigsegg Agera RS, the world's fastest production car with a top speed of 278 mph, is no simple feat. But that is exactly what the Swedish manufacturer is aiming for with its reveal of the 2020 Koenigsegg Jesko at the Geneva auto show.
Named after Jesko von Koenigsegg, the inspirational father of company founder and CEO Christian von Koenigsegg, the Jesko is a wild thing to behold with its vast array of massive aerodynamic appendages. It is an exotic contraption encompassing cutting-edge engineering, massive power levels, and a range of specifications that, on paper, make it appear a better and more capable vehicle than its predecessor in every way—despite following a similar performance formula and sharing a distinct familial resemblance to the Agera.

The New Koenigsegg Jesko Gets a Kind of Anti-Lag Along With Its 1,600 HP
It’s easy to focus on the numbers when it comes to a new car from Koenigsegg. The Koenigsegg Jesko, its Geneva car this year, claims 1,600 horsepower, 1,000 kilos of downforce at speed, and a nine-speed transmission with seven clutches. But I’m more interested in its kind of anti-lag.
The ever-wonderful Christian von Koenigsegg (the car is named after his dad) points out that this is meant to be a global car, with airbags designed for meeting U.S. safety standards, and hardware to heat up the catalytic converters to help with passing tighter emissions regulations around the world. But it’s a supercar so it has to be more powerful, and one of the things it has is bigger turbos on the 8,500 RPM 5.0-liter V8, now with a 180-degree flat-plane crankshaft, as noted in the car’s press release.
While I’m here on specs let me lay out the key stuff that Koenigsegg claims:
Curb weight: 3,130 lbs (1,420 kg)
HP: 1,280 on 91 octane, 1,600 on E85
Torque: 1,106 lb-ft (1,500 Nm) at 5100 RPM
Downforce: 800 kg at 155 mph, 1,000 kg at 170 mph, 1400 kg “maximum”
But bigger turbos mean big lag, and big lag in a fast car means a car can quickly become a widowmaker, as was the case with the original Porsche 911 Turbo.

Toyota GR Supra GT4 Concept: Why Must Toyota Make Us Beg
Get out your bingo cards, there’s yet another 2019 Toyota Supra concept car. This one, the Toyota GR Supra GT4 Concept, is what a privateer racing Supra could look like. In fact, it’s almost exactly what Toyota could sell you. Instead of doing that, we’re just calling this a concept for now.
This new GR Supra GT4 Concept is different from the GR Supra racing concept we saw at the Detroit Auto Show. The Supra GT4 was developed by Toyota Motorsport GmbH in Europe for GT4 series racing, which the company claims is one of the fastest growing racing series in key markets like North America, Europe and Asia.
If it goes into production, which, who are we kidding, it most likely will, it’s a race car, “production” isn’t too many anyway, it would be a factory-built track-only race car for amateur motorsports teams racing in the European GT4 Series, American IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge, and the Blancpain GT World Challenge Asia and Super Endurance Series, among others.
Because it’s a concept, Toyota gets to be pretty tight-lipped about details, but it keeps the BMW 3.0-liter inline turbo six-cylinder from the real car. Weight has been reduced compared to the production car, there’s racing-spec brakes and suspension, a nice big rear wing and a built-in roll cage.

Ferrari reveals 488 replacement: Meet the F8 Tributo | DriveTribe
Ferrari has treated us to a look at its incoming 488 replacement ahead of its official reveal at the Geneva Motor Show next week.
This is the new F8 Tributo – and it’s a bit quick. Here’s what you need to know:
Just as Lambo recently released the updated Huracan Evo which matches the power of the pointier, more track-focused Performante, the ‘entry level’ F8 matches the power of the pointier, more track-focused 488 Pista at 710bhp. That’s 50 more than the 488 GTB, a car not often accused of lacking poke. It’s the same 3.9 litre twin-turbo V8 as its predecessor, a powertrain which Ferrari never misses a chance to remind us is winner of the ‘engine of the year’ award three years running now. Turbo lag? Absolutely none, they claim.
Zero to 60 will take 2.9 seconds, and top speed is 211mph. It’s surely no coincidence that the new F8 has exactly the same horsepower as McLaren’s 720S, which has become something of a supercar benchmark of late. Lots of squeaky bums in Woking this morning, no doubt.

You Can Trace Ferrari's Newest Car Back to 2009
The Ferrari F8 Tributo made its debut today, a new mid-engine V8 Ferrari road car. Except it’s not all that new, as the bones of the thing go back to when everyone was getting laid off in the Recession.
Indeed, the F8 is a facelift/update/development/whatever you want to call it of the 2015 Ferrari 488, which was a facelift/update/development of the 2009 Ferrari 458. A Ferrari spokesman confirmed to us that yes, the F8 Tributo and the 458 share a platform.
Nobody thinks too greatly about the distinction between 488 and 458, as the later car was genuinely a major development, at least in terms of the engine, going from naturally-aspirated to turbocharged. That’s a real change to the character of the car.
By contrast, the F8 and the 488 are both turbo cars, the differences between then the new version has... yet more power. You’re basically getting the developments done to the 488 that made it into the limited-edition Pista, but in a regular production model.
Now, to be fair, this is typical of Ferrari’s mid-engine V8 cars. The vaunted Ferrari 355 was basically just a development of the 348, just as the 328 was of the 308 before it and the 430 was of the 360 after it.

The Ferrari F8 Tributo Is A 710-Horsepower Mid-Engined V8 Beast
Ferrari has just shown the first full pictures of its replacement for the 488 GTB, and it’s a mid-engined 710 horsepower angry red beast called the F8 Tributo. While still based on the 2009-vintage 458 Italia underpinnings, the body and interior are all new, and the drivetrain is essentially the same as the one in the bonkers 488 Pista.
“Tributo” is the Italian word for “tribute” and not “three butos” as I originally thought. A tribute is sort of a tax, so you can think of it as the Ferrari F8 Tax, if you’d like. I’m not planning to.
Ferrari is very proud of the 3.9-liter turbocharged V8 they’ve stuck behind the seats, as you can tell from their press release:
“The name is an homage to both the model’s uncompromising layout and to the engine that powers it – with a massive 720 cv and a record specific power output of 185 cv/l, it is the most powerful V8 in Prancing Horse history for a non-special series car and sets the benchmark not just for turbos, but for engines across the board. The 3902 cc V8 won “Best Engine” in the International Engine of the Year awards three years running in 2016, 2017 and 2018 and, in addition, in 2018, was awarded the title of the best engine of the last two decades.”
The new 710 horsepower/568 lb-ft of torque engine gives the Tributo a 49 horsepower bump over the 488 GTB it’s replacing, and Ferrari says it’s 10 percent more aerodynamically efficient, so if you buy one you can test that out in your basement wind tunnel.

Mazda 6 - Consumer Reports
$21,950 - $34,750
Base MSRP range
Overall 28 / City 18 / Hwy 42 mpg
79 / 100
5 / 5
5 / 5
Sporty and stylish, the Mazda6 is an enjoyable car to drive, although it's a bit on the snug side compared to its peers. The standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder is responsive and delivered 28 mpg overall in our tests. The uplevel turbocharged engine makes the 6 quieter and much quicker. We found the 6 to be agile and capable in the corners with sharp steering and composed suspension. The ride is pliant and controlled, effectively absorbing bumps. The cabin is quiet and nicely furnished, but the low stance and relatively tight quarters are notable. A center display screen that is operated via a central knob on the console takes practice to master. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility are new. Forward-collision warning and city-speed automatic emergency braking are standard.

Nissan's GT-R Owes The Mid4 Supercar A Debt Of Gratitude
In the late 1980s, Nissan developed a mid-engine four-wheel-drive supercar with a twin-turbocharged V6, the Mid4. It was slated for production, and might have set the world of sports cars on fire, beating Acura’s NSX to market and absolutely dominating in the face of the fastest Italians of the day. Sadly the Mid4 was pushed to a footnote of NISMO history when the project was shelved due to the Japanese financial collapse.
Thankfully for Nissan enthusiasts, the project wasn’t a complete bust, as the company used AWD parts developed for the Mid4 project in the 1989 launch of the R32 generation Skyline GT-R, which obviously thrust Nissan to the forefront of international performance standards.
While the world did get something good out of the shelved Mid4 project, I can’t help but be a little bit sad that the royal we never got to experience R32 GT-R level performance in a mid-engine package. This thing must have been an absolute rocketship.
Shame, that. Either way, you can learn a little more about it by watching Sam Collins show you around the car as it sits in Nissan’s collection. It’s short and sweet, maybe a little too short, if I’m honest.

Falken gains OE fitment on 2018 Mazda6 - Tire Business - The Tire Dealer's No. 1 News Source
KOBE, Japan — Mazda Motor Corp. has selected the Falken Ziex ZE001 A/S high-performance tire as an OE fitment on the redesigned/re-engineered 2018 Mazda6, considered the car maker's flagship passenger model.
Falken-brand producer Sumitomo Rubber Industries Ltd. (SRI) said it is supplying Mazda with the Ziex ZE001 model in size 225/45R19 92W, which corresponds to spec for the Touring, Grand Touring, Grand Touring Reserve and Signature trim levels for the new Mazda6, which debuted in U.S. showrooms in April. The fifth trim level, Sport, rolls on P225/55R17 tires.
Mazda did not identify any other OE tire suppliers at this time.
SRI describes the Ziex ZE001 A/S all-season tire as offering a balance between consistent steering stability, refined riding comfort and quiet running in addition to superior fuel efficiency and braking performance, all qualities that fulfilled Mazda's "stringent performance requirements" for the new 6.
The four-door, five-passenger sedan is powered either by Mazda's 2.5-liter, four-cylinder Skyactive-G in normal aspiration or turbocharged versions, according to Mazda.
Falken is also OE on the Mazda CX-9 mid-size sport-utility vehicle with the Ziex CT50 all-season performance tire.

Here's What Happens When You Slap a Twin-Turbo Kit Onto a Voodoo Engine
We didn't think the Ford Mustang Shelby GT350's engine could get any more ferocious. Then we heard this 1350-horsepower beast.
Update 1/25/2018: This article has been updated with video of an even more extreme version of Fathouse Fabrication's twin-turbo Mustang Shelby GT350 setup, along with build pictures and a description of the modifications made to the car. Enjoy.
The 5.2-liter "Voodoo" V8 found in the Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 is one of the most exotic engines you can currently buy. But if having a flat-plane crankshaft and an 8250-RPM redline just isn't enough for you, a company called Fathouse Fabrications of Martinsville, Indiana offers a twin turbo kit that puts out 1348 horsepower to the wheels.
Among the upgrades done to Fathouse's top-tier performance package for the GT350 Mustang include forged engine internals, a beefed-up twin-disc clutch, a Motec ECU, custom intake and exhaust piping, stronger axles, and a carbon fiber driveshaft. There's also an upgraded oil pump, a thicker intercooler, and three fuel pumps to handle all that extra power. The shop sent us a ton of pictures documenting its build process, including photos of the custom exhaust needed to fit the turbochargers, which are mounted next to the transmission under the car.

Watch a 2018 Ford GT Face Off Against the Dodge Challenger Demon in a Half-Mile Drag Race - The Drive
Can Ford's high-tech supercar best Mopar's drag monster on a closed down stretch of runway?
A new video from the YouTube channel DragTimes compares half-mile straight line performance between the 2018 Ford GT and the 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon during the WannaGoFast South Florida runway racing event. Both of these cars have become icons since their release and are capable of 200-plus mile-per-hour top speeds, so pitting them against each other will surely make for an interesting test.
For the race, the Dodge Demon was running on 100 octane fuel, bumping power up to 840 from the 808 figure it typically runs on pump gas. The Challenger was also running with the "Demon Crate" skinny tires up front and wide Mickey Thomspon drag radials at the rear. The Ford GT, on the other hand, was given no race prep before making its passes on the runway.
From a numbers perspective, it seems like the Demon should be the obvious winner of this duel. It's powered by a 6.2-liter pushrod Hemi V-8 with a 2.7-liter supercharger bolted on top, and it pushes that previously mentioned 840 horsepower to the ground using an eight-speed auto box that Dodge re-designed with drag racing in mind. The Ford GT has a relatively tiny 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 making 647 horsepower, and is mated to a seven-speed, dual-clutch transmission.
That's a nearly 200 horsepower deficit compared to the Challenger, but you can't rule out the GT's weight and aero advantage. The Ford is made from lightweight carbon and is shaped like a Le Mans racer, while the Dodge carries the weight and form of a giant brick. The Ford GT weighs in around 3,400 pounds, while the Demon packs on almost half a ton more, at 4,280 pounds.
With all these figures in mind, how will the two fare on the runway? Skip to the five-minute mark in the video to get straight to the racing action.

The Toyota Supra's Blocked-Off Air Vents Can Be Made Functional, Says the Chief Engineer
Tetsuya Tada, the engineering boss for the new Supra, explains what happens when you remove the blocking plates from the scoops in the Supra's hood, fenders, and doors.
The 2020 Toyota Supra's bodywork is shot through with air scoops—in the front and rear bumpers, in the hood, even in the doors. On the production model of the car, almost all of these slashes and vents are blocked off with black plastic. But in a conversation with Tetsuya Tada, the chief engineer for the new A90-generation Supra, we learned that there's a way to make these decoy vents and scoops functional.
Speaking through a translator, Tada explained how Toyota built a Supra race car midway through the development of the production model, the first time the automaker had tried such a strategy. Feedback from the race car influenced the eventual design of the street-legal model, including those myriad vents and scoops.
"If you look at the vehicle today, there's holes all over the body," Tada said. "They're just capped on the production car. Those are for the racing model. When the customer goes and converts it to a racing car, or adds those necessary components, those caps come off very easily. So, it's already pre-made, ready to accommodate."
