when you wake - sevenfoxes - Multifandom [Archive of Our Own]
Darcy cringes. “Souvenir from Clint and Natasha’s mission. Apparently it fell out of the sky in Bucharest,” she says, peering through the glass at the creature. “Don’t worry, they’re pretty sure it’s dead.”

Turning back to look at Steve, she yawns a bit, not bothering to hide her gaping mouth behind a hand, which makes him smile a bit for the first time today. “You know, I asked Clint to bring me back something, but I was thinking more like a keychain or booze from the duty free section of the airport.”

Don't Fuck With Florists (They'll Fuck You Up) - MayMarlow - Harry Potter - J. K. Rowling [Archive of Our Own]
Unsatisfied with his post-war life, Harry decides to get to the root of all of his problems when that root was still working at Borgin and Burkes shop in the late 40s. He’s the Master of Death, damn it, he can do what he wants for once in his life.

Tom Riddle isn’t particularly happy about working at a small, dingy shop for magical artifacts, no matter how interesting those artifacts are. He’s even less happy when an insufferable stranger sets up the most obnoxious flower shop right across the street.

What follows would be a romantic comedy, if it weren’t for politics.
Fun and angst free!

The Viking Wants Forever by Koko Brown
A Love Frozen In Time…
Reese Johnson yearns for a life other than the world of drudgery she’s settled for as the manager of a comic book store. What’s that they say? Be careful what you wish for? Well that’s a motto Reese should have tattooed across her forehead. Because Loki, the Norse god of mischief, has just the remedy for the boring life of this woman who denounces his existence.

His recipe for disaster?
Take a 30 year-old woman and send her back in time as a pawn for revenge. Couple her with Eirik Sigurdsson, a Viking Warlord, too arrogant and baggage-laden to be of any use for anything, but battle and bed. Mix thoroughly, folding in a heavy dose of pride, a tyrannical king, and a sympathetic goddess. Bake at high until a white-hot love is unleashed and then forever frozen in time.

NOTE: The Viking Wants Forever was previously published as Frozen in Time. The story has been expanded by 42,000 words.

The Shape of My Name | Tor.com
"The year 2076 smells like antiseptic gauze and the lavender diffuser that Dara set up in my room. It has the bitter aftertaste of pills: probiotics and microphages and PPMOs. It feels like the itch of healing, the ache that’s settled on my pubic bone. It has the sound of a new name that’s fresh and yet familiar on my lips.

The future feels lighter than the past. I think I know why you chose it over me, Mama."

The Girl from Everywhere (The Girl from Everywhere, #1) by Heidi Heilig
Nix has spent her entire life aboard her father’s ship, sailing across the centuries, across the world, across myth and imagination.

As long as her father has a map for it, he can sail to any time, any place, real or imagined: nineteenth-century China, the land from One Thousand and One Nights, a mythic version of Africa. Along the way they have found crewmates and friends, and even a disarming thief who could come to mean much more to Nix.

But the end to it all looms closer every day.

Her father is obsessed with obtaining the one map, 1868 Honolulu, that could take him back to his lost love, Nix’s mother. Even though getting it—and going there—could erase Nix’s very existence.

For the first time, Nix is entering unknown waters.

She could find herself, find her family, find her own fantastical ability, her own epic love.

Or she could disappear."

A late addition, but just in case folks have bookmarked this site - def recommended for found family, awesome friendships, likeable characters (along with some villainous ones), and a fascinating premise gilded with some complicated elements of addiction and parents who aren't what they should be. A really interesting debut. --C

Since you added such a wide range of what you like -- esp literary and Murakami -- how do you feel about anthologies? Stories for Chip, edited by Nisi Shawl, is an amazing anthology by over a dozen talented writers. It's got both fiction and nonfiction, some super accessible and some super literary, all inspired by the work of legendary SF writer Samuel Delany. You might not love every story, but I think you're going to find several that hit your sweet spot. --C

Also, for a (frighteningly timely) dystopia, try Ink by Sabrina Vourvoulias. - C

Yes: Mistborn, BoJack Horseman, "character growth is awesome." No: super dark, horror, military
Reader, I have to admit that this is the LAST QUESTION and I've staring at it for days. BoJack Horseman really just threw me for a loop! We're going to make our best guesses and if they don't turn out to be something you like, tell us so we can try again! Librarians are like Pandora... the more you thumbs-up/thumbs-down, the better we get and finding something just right for you. --C

Here's my best guesses, and they're a little all over the place. (This is also a group effort - I've been brainstorming with my SPL colleagues!):
The Ultra Fabulous Glitter Squadron Saves the World Again, A.C. Wise
(for the humor, the edge, the friendship, and the character growth)

The Wicked and the Divine, Kieron Gillan and Jamie McKelvie

The House of Shattered Wings, Aliette de Bodard

1Q84, Haruki Murakami
