Netflix adds 29m subs in 2018 |
In terms of competition, Netflix notes that in the US, it earns around 10 per cent of television screen time and less than that of mobile screen time. In other countries, it earns a lower percentage of screen time as a result of lower penetration of its service. “We earn consumer screen time, both mobile and television, away from a very broad set of competitors. We compete with (and lose to) Fortnite more than HBO. When YouTube went down globally for a few minutes in October, our viewing and signups spiked for that time. Hulu is small compared to YouTube for viewing time, and they are successful in the US, but non-existent in Canada, which creates a comparison point: our penetration in the two countries is pretty similar. There are thousands of competitors in this highly-fragmented market vying to entertain consumers and low barriers to entry for those with great experiences. Our growth is based on how good our experience is, compared to all the other screen time experiences from which consumers choose. Our focus is not on Disney+, Amazon or others, but on how we can improve our experience for our members.”

Stories accounted for 1 in 3 sponsored Instagram posts last year, analysis finds | Mobile Marketer
Instagram experienced a 39% year-over-year jump in influencer marketing in 2018, with more than 2.1 million sponsored posts shared on its platform, according to a new report from Klear shared with Mobile Marketer. The social media analytics and intelligence firm examined posts that used the #ad disclosure between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31 last year.
Helping contribute to the growth were products the Facebook-owned app has continued to expand and monetize, such as the disappearing photo and video collages called Stories. One in three Instagram sponsored posts shared in 2018 was in the Stories section, Klear found.
In terms of who shared the most sponsored content, women, micro-influencers and millennials stood out, with women making up 84.6% of the market and micro-influencers covering 84%. For brands, lifestyle, fashion and beauty were the biggest categories, followed by travel, food and home and interior design.

Why are more people eating vegan and vegetarian food?
With the trend towards healthier living showing no signs of slowing, more publicans need to adjust their menus accordingly so as not to miss out on the potential opportunities that this presents their businesses.
Consumers are demanding more alternatives to meat when eating out – whether it is vegan or vegetarian dishes. The surge towards a healthier lifestyle, combined with environmental concerns, is driving this trend.
Against this background, pubs face a major challenge. How can they alter their menus to offer a good range of options for those who want to experience meat-free meals?

New research from Meatless Farm Co, the plant-based meat-free supplier to the foodservice market, has revealed that more than 40% of Brits have eaten a plant-based, meat-free meal in a pub or restaurant in the past 12 months.

The survey of 2,000 UK adults via OnePoll also reveals that 41% of Brits were likely to consider choosing a plant-based or meat alternative dish when eating out at a pub or restaurant over the next year.

Facebook Says It Will Invest $300M in Local News |
Social media giant Facebook asked its users what kind of news people wanted to see on the site, and also asked the news industry how it could better work with them to make “a real impact.”
The answer, according to an announcement on Tuesday (Jan. 15), was clear: People wanted more local news, and local newsrooms wanted more support from the company.
Facebook said it was going to help in two key areas: “supporting local journalists and newsrooms with their newsgathering needs in the immediate future; and helping local news organizations build sustainable business models, through both our product and partnership work.”

Facebook thinks that its approach will also foster civic engagement, which is directly related to people consuming local news, the company said.
The company is willing to put its money where its mouth is: It has promised a $5 million endowment to the Pulitzer Center to launch “Bringing Stories Home,” which will cover grants for reporters to cover local topics. The fund plans to support 12 in-depth local reporting works.

The Age of Tech Is Over - The Atlantic
Jeff Bezos is famous for saying, “Your margin is my opportunity.” Well, the converse is also true: Amazon’s opportunity is everybody else’s dream margin. In particular, many of today’s largest tech companies, even those that have been mostly media and advertising clearinghouses, want to evolve into digital retailers. Instagram, which is owned by Facebook, has the inside track on becoming the Sears catalog for the Millennial generation. Google’s smart home devices could recommend new products based on your interior design. Imagine a machine-learning furniture-recognition program that can identify your couch and coffee table and then point you to a lamp with similar elements.
