Dick Dale, Surf Rock Pioneer Dead at 81 | Music News | Consequence of Sound
Affectionally known as "The King of the Surf Guitar," Dale is credited as the originator of surf-style music
Surf rock pioneer Dick Dale has died at the age of 81 years old, according to reports.
Affectionally known by many as “The King of the Surf Guitar,” Dale is credited as the originator of surf-style music. The son of a Lebanese immigrant, Dale’s guitar playing incorporated Middle Eastern music scales and a rapid alternate picking technique derived from tarabaki drumming. He also played a left-handed guitar, but did so without restringing the instrument, which made for a more high-end bite on bass strings and warmer treble tones. He was also one of the first guitarists to use reverb.
Upon moving to Southern California in the mid-1950s, Dale immersed himself in the burgeoning surf culture and played sold-out concerts known as “surfer stomps.” With the release of his debut album, 1962’s Surfers’ Choice, Dale’s brand of surf music earned a national audience. He appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show, where he performed his own take on the traditional Middle Eastern song “Misirlou”. Decades later, Dale’s “Misirlou” found renewed popularity when it appeared in Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction.

How “Misirlou” Became Pulp Fiction and Quentin Tarantino’s Smoking Gun | Consequence of Sound
Could you imagine any other song for this movie's theme?
Ever wonder which movies inspire your favorite bands or how filmmakers work with artists to compile your favorite soundtracks? Sound to Screen is a regular feature that explores where film and music intersect. This time, Blake Goble’s going to talk about Quentin Tarantino and one of the greatest mix tape soundtracks ever produced.
A compilation of favorite pieces of music, typically by different artists, recorded onto a cassette tape or other medium by an individual.
There’s a throwaway gag in Space Jam, the 1996 Warner Bros. marketing tentpole, wherein Elmer Fudd and Yosemite Sam begin shooting pistols at a basketball-playing alien. In that little moment, the gun-slinging duo are not only dressed in black suits a la Jules and Vincent, but Pulp Fiction’s iconic theme song, “Misirlou” by Dick Dale & His Del-Tones, starts slamming in the background. Just from the song’s super-speedy strumming, audiences everywhere recognize the reference.
Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction turns 20 this year, and yet the film remains lodged in everyone’s head. Royales with cheese, Big Kahuna burgers, golden briefcases, wallets that say “Bad Motherfucker,” watches, foot massages, the “Gimp,” Zed, poor Marvin, The Wolf, what Marsellus Wallace looks like, furious vengeance, the sting of pride, a needle in the heart, Honey Bunnies, Pumpkins, Kitty Kats, and Daddy-Os — all fractions of Pulp Fiction’s seemingly ceaseless linguistics about the minutiae of kitsch and pulp.

Captain Marvel Movie Soundtrack - Listen to the Captain Marvel Music
The film's music competently highlights the female-fronted acts challenging the decade's testosterone-heavy grunge trend.
Shirley Manson told NME back in 2015 that Garbage's 1995 hit "Only Happy When it Rains" was subtly dragging grunge music, which had become the dominant genre of the '90s. “It developed into a very tongue-in-cheek poke at what we felt was a lot of miserabilism at the time,” Manson said. “There’s definitely an element of self-deprecating humor because the fact is we are all quite miserable." Her band was among a number of female-fronted acts in the '90s that began to reject the mopey masculinity of grunge music.
One of the best achievements of Marvel '90s-set blockbuster Captain Marvel is the film's ability to tap into that zeitgeist of the the decade without making it feel like frivolous nostalgia. The first title film for a female superhero in the MCU succeeds in capturing an era when acts like Garbage and TLC and No Doubt were challenging the testosterone-heavy dominant sound of the early decade.

A Star is Born collaborators reunite for one of the evening's most anticipated moments

Robert Plant's Friendly Role In 'Green Book' Soundtrack And Other Behind The Scenes Secrets
Green Book director/co-writer and co-producer Peter Farrelly knew he wanted an authentic soundtrack to complement the jazz/classical hybrid of the late pianist Don Shirley that the Oscar-nominated film celebrates.
So he turned to an unlikely source. "My wife's friend was going out with Robert Plant of all people, we went out to dinner and I picked his brain," Farrelly recalls. "I said, 'Robert, tell me some songs that you listened to in the late '50s and early '60s that nobody plays anymore. I want to hear the cool songs to you but that you haven't heard on the radio in 50 years.'"
Farrelly says Plant, yes, that Plant, lead singer of Led Zeppelin, suggested songs like "Pretty Lil' Thing," by Sonny "Golden Boy" Williamson and "Goodbye, My Lover, Goodbye," by Robert Mosley, among many others.
"It was an amazing night because I had just finished writing the script and he came to visit with his girlfriend, who was my wife's friend. And my wife and her are both smokers, so they were outside smoking cigarettes and we were on YouTube and he was pulling up song after song after song and I was sitting there like a crazy student writing down all the stuff."
It takes a whole team to make a movie that garners five Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. So as I spoke with Farrelly and composer Kris Bowers about the music in Green Book and why the message is so resonant today, that Plant helped shape the soundtrack is just one of the fascinating things revealed, along with how Bowers turned to his grandfather for information and the congratulatory call Farrelly got from Harry Belafonte after he saw Green Book.
