akamine_chan: Finds You in the End
REC: A one-night stand that developes into something more. With a twist. A very sweet story that gives us a glimpse from a fascinating universe. (2016-09-04)
QUOTE: It had been an impulsive decision, to visit the House of Secrets. Franc's life was too dangerous, too transient, for him to form bonds, and sometimes he just needed to be touched. A craving that he couldn't satisfy with drink, or powder, or the twist of his own slicked hand.
A quick trip to the House, a donation to the Mistress, and a night lost in carnal indulgence. Simple. Quick. Easy.
Franc should have known better; his Luck was never that good.
He couldn't stop thinking about the man, the way he moved, rocking slowly into Franc, making him feel the stretch and pull. The sounds he made when Franc sucked a bruise onto his thigh, the way his fingernails dug into Franc's shoulders to pull him close, *closer*, how he watched Franc's face as he drowned under the sensations trembling through him.
When he closed his eyes, Franc couldn't see anything but the man, laid out under him, strung out by Franc's touch, his face *open*, unashamed and honest. (1,500 words)

turps: You're Shying Away
REC: Gerard gets lost in his art. A lovely and haunting little story. And I can't decide if the ending is sad or hopeful. (2016-03-13)
QUOTE: I've seen him again.
Fingers flying, Mikey eyes the sketch artist as he sends the text, pushing his phone back into his pocket before he has to see the reply. Not that he needs to, he already knows what it says.
It can't be him. It's not possible.
But it is.
It's been almost a year and Mikey's heart is still broken. Every moment he misses Gerard, but Mikey knows where he is.
No note, no text or messages and an apartment left dirty and abandoned. All Gerard's clothes strewn on the floor and his bed unmade, and everywhere, spilled paint, hardened brushes and torn paper.
Mikey shivers, remembering Gerard's last work, the canvas left on the floor, a painted handprint smeared over a darkened landscape and billowing fog. (1,000 words)

turps: Burn Ever Bright
REC: When Gerard isn't selected by a dragon he thinks his life is over. But he is wrong, it has only just started. This is an absolutely lovely story. It's sad and aweinspiring, funny and bittersweet. And as usual I love the way Terri writes the Way brothers - their close mental bond and how deeply they love each other. The way she writes this world is also wonderful. It feels very tangible, very real. Gerard's first view of the valley and the dragons will stay with me for a long time. (2015-05-31)
QUOTE: If stepping into the shadow is creepy, the sidestep into the rock is even more so. In a blink nearly all light is gone, and Gerard is all too aware of the rock that surrounds him so completely. The only sound is his own breathing, and Gerard takes careful sidesteps, the tunnel sides narrowing and scraping against his stomach and back on occasions.
Clutching his bag at his side, Gerard takes slow deliberate breaths, reminding himself Frank said it's not actually far, no matter how it seems like Gerard's been inside of this rock forever.
"You're only a few steps away now." Ray's voice is welcome, and Gerard narrows his eyes when he sees light spilling into the tunnel. "Around a corner and you're here."
Gerard quickens his side steps, eager for fresh air as he steps into bright sunshine, and onto a ledge where he can look down into a long and bowled valley - one that's filled with dragons, some awake, some slumbering, and some commanding the air, swooping and roaring, leaving flaring flames and smoke trails behind them.
At first, Gerard thinks that he's dreaming, or hallucinating, because nothing he's experienced in life has prepared him for this. Unlike the neat dragon pens back in the corps, these dragons are spread out and roam free, dozens of them, so many that Gerard doesn't know where to look first.
Some lumber across the valley floor, huge and yet dainty in the way they look around, their brilliant, shimmering scales catching the light. While others seem to be napping, curled up and looking like vast living hills, their wings tucked in and tails stretched out over the rock.
It's the most magnificent thing Gerard's ever seen, like a colourful, amazing fantasy land made real.
"This is another mirage, right?" Gerard says, because no way is this real. It can't be, it's not possible that something so amazing has been tucked away out of sight at the top of this mountain. "Those are dragons. *Big* dragons. Wild dragons."
"They're real, and they've been here for a long while now," Ray says, his hair blowing against his face when one of the bigger dragons stretches its body and flaps red-tipped green wings. (20,000 words)

Tigress33: Older Than Water (Stubborn As Stone)
REC: When Gerard was young he thought there were two types of people, Chosen and Not Chosen. Now he knows there are the lucky and those like him, the unlucky. A cool story with a nice Gerard characterisation. I hope there will be more some day. I really want to know how Gerard and his dragon's relationship develops and see more of this fascinating world. (2015-05-31)
QUOTE: Gerard, pinned, clenched his eyes and breathed out when the dragon closed its fangs around his neck, counting down. He felt the fangs break skin and prepared himself. He knew he couldn't get out of this. Grant had wasted so much on him. Even Wentz and Stump, who had put their faith in him to complete some mission. His partner, still out there and waiting for him, still hurting and as angry as him at the world for failing them.
The dragon clenched its jaw, but nothing happened after skin was broken. He could feel the dragon trembling, feel the rage boiling under skin and scale, but he wasn't dead. It pulled back from him like he had burnt it, and screamed again, sounding even angrier than before. It bit him on the shoulder this time, but after skin was broken it went no deeper. Gerard could *feel* the desperation in it, feel how much it wanted to hurt him but, at the same time, couldn't. Could feel how, like him, it was throwing away the sword after each threat of violence.
On the fourth bite, Gerard felt tears. He knew dragons could cry, though it was through a different physiological system than humans, but he hadn't quite believed it until then, when, through the growling and biting, tears dripped onto him.
Gerard felt his eyes well and, without reason, he began to sob. The dragon reared back and he reached out, caught her face in his and pressed their foreheads together. There was a light, so bright it blinded, but it was gone almost before it had begun as the dragon broke the connection. She slammed her clawed foot into his chest, breaking through shirt and skin again, and snarled at him.
"How could you leave me!?" She shouted, her wings spreading wide, to intimidate, "*How could you leave me!?*"
"I didn't!" Gerard said desperately, "I could never -"
"Now!" A new voice unnoticed and loud, yelled. There was a thin sound and she went down on top of him, tears still streaming from her hazing eyes. Gerard gasped, felt his vision darken and his lungs collapse on him like she had. He was out before the people from before were on them. Somehow, even unconscious, Gerard had to be peeled away from his grip on her. (25,180 words)

snarkydame: Dreams Like Deadly
REC: The one where Mikey wakes up in a dream and there are dragons. A beautiful story with lovely writing and a wonderfully strange and dreamy atmosphere. I particularly loved how the dragons were written. So vivid you could practically see them. (2015-02-22)
QUOTE: "The roof should be just a few more flights up," he said. "We can get the lay of the land from there."
They went on. Mikey's legs were burning. The amber emergency lights shone steadily, unflinchingly. They glowed off the sweat on the back of Ray's neck, and glinted in his hair.
The door to the roof opened effortlessly. Mikey had to catch at it, panicked, as it swung shut again. He didn't want to be locked on the roof.
Ray handed him a chunk of concrete cinder to stop the door, and the two of them reveled for a moment in the cool air outside the stairwell.
In fact, Mikey thought after a very short while, it was cold.
The oppressive heat rising from the basement had given way to a brisk wind, which smelled of ice, and snow, and winter.
Mikey shivered, and Ray drew closer, leaning against his arm. He was thankful for the warmth.
The sky was pale, a distant, washed out grey. He couldn't see the sun behind the clouds, and there were no shadows.
The building they were on was higher than those around them. Mikey looked over the waist high ledge. The city was still. No taxis, no pedestrians. No murmur of voices or machinery. Not even pigeons, fluttering under ledges.
And then, wings.
They unfolded slowly, almost ponderously, and Mikey felt Ray's hand clench around his wrist. Just below them, across the street on the roof of what looked like a office building, the great white dragon yawned.
It was bigger than the one in the basement, Mikey thought. Its scales were ghostly, its wings transparent as sheets of ice. Its teeth were... Mikey gulped. Its teeth were longer than he was tall.
And there was a brilliantly blue scale, dead center in its massive chest. (2,240 words)

fleurdeliser & ohnoktcsk & tuesdaysgone: The Way of the Voice
REC: Gerard is one of the finest skalds in the kingdom, but when he finds himself the target of a very nasty curse his whole life is thrown into chaos. Desperate to break the curse Gerard seeks help from the kingdom's most powerful mage and his enchanting assistant. This is a delightful story. I love the warm, domestic atmosphere and the way Gerard fits into Frank and Grant's lives like there's a space there that's just been waiting for him to fill it. The way magic and music and ordinary, everyday life interwines all through the story makes it a joy to read. It will definitely go on my list of stories to read when I'm feeling down. (2014-09-07)
QUOTE: "He is excellent at his job," Grant said. "And yes, we'll need to employ other methods regardless. There is one more scrying spell I can try that may reveal something different, but I can already tell it won't be enough."
"Nyota's third?" Frank asked. Grant nodded. "I'll get the salt," Frank said, getting up.
Grant moved to the part of the room they used for casting circles and started gathering candles. He glanced back at Gerard, who remained seated. He wasn't still, though. His eyes were darting around him, taking in the room. He'd seen it the day before, but things had been moved around. His hands were moving, worrying the hem of his sleeve, folding in his lap, resting on his knees.
Grant could understand Gerard's unease with silence just now. Happily, he could do something about that. "Nyota's third incantation is a bit unusual, for a scrying spell," he told Gerard. "What makes it unusual, Frank?"
"'M not your apprentice anymore," Frank grumbled, but he added, "It uses different pathways."
"It's a spoken-word, or rather, sung, incantation. I believe in this case it might prove more effective," Grant explained. He knelt with a piece of chalk and drew the circle. Frank returned and started arranging the rest of the materials. Gerard's eyes darted between them both. He clearly found the process utterly fascinating.
"The circle directs the spell," Grant explained. "It gives the words somewhere to go."
Gerard gestured between them. "Who does the spell?" Frank asked.
"You should," Grant said to Frank. "You haven't had that many opportunities to do this one, as I recall."
Frank nodded. "Okay. Gerard, can you come over here? We both need to kneel in the middle of the circle. Grant will finish the preparations. Then I'll start the incantation." Gerard nodded and got on his knees in the circle. Frank knelt opposite him. "I'm going to need to put my hands on your shoulders," Frank said.
Gerard nodded, mouthing an 'okay'. Grant finished his preparations, setting the little bundles of ingredients at three points on the circle's circumference. Then he sat back and watched Frank.
Frank whispered to Gerard, "Close your eyes." Gerard closed his eyes and Frank started the incantation. His voice was scratchy and rough at first, but as he kept going, his tone evened out. Grant always forgot how well Frank could sing.
Gerard's eyes were still closed, but his expression had changed. He looked... sad. Immensely so. Frank's voice wavered minutely. He saw it too. Grant watched his hands move, cupping Gerard's skull, thumbs circling just under his ears.
Grant watched Gerard breathe in through his nose and saw his Adam's apple move as he swallowed. Frank kept singing. The circle flared with light, little sparks dancing up into the air as Frank sang the spell to its conclusion.
Neither he nor Gerard moved, so Grant did. "It worked," he murmured to Frank. "Look at the sigils." (62,440 words)

ohnoktcsk: And Me Here On the Ground
REC: Frank's worked hard to build a life for himself in the city and he's content with what he has: a job as a bike courier, friends who love to give him shit, and a crush on a professor of art history at the local university. But he's also got a secret - one he's been running from for a long time. This is a fabulous story! A wonderful mix of urban and high fantasy, with fairy tales and domestic fluff added in, and it works and it's glorious. The worldbuilding is fantastic. The mix of the magical and strange with the ordinary and humdrum, and the glimpses we get of both ancient and recent history are totally fascinating. I love the way Frank is written. His growing love of Gerard, his friendship with Dewees and his instant connection with Ray, his wariness of Grant and the old magic, and whatever it is he's trying not to remember - it all make him feel very real and also very likeable. And the climax and conclusion to the story was absolutely fantastic. It was so exciting and intense I read it all in one huge gulp and could literally not look away from the screen. This is definitely my favourite story so far of this wave. (2013-09-22) Best of 2013 - Most Interesting Fantasy AU & Best Frank Characterisation: This is a wonderful mix of urban and high fantasy, with fairy tales and domestic fluff added in. You wouldn't think it could possibly work but it does and it's glorious. It has fantastic worldbuilding, the mix of the magical and strange with the ordinary and humdrum, and the glimpses we get of both ancient and recent history are totally fascinating. Not only is this a fabulous story, it also has an absolutely first class Frank characterisation. His growing love of Gerard, his friendship with Dewees and his instant connection with Ray, his wariness of Grant and the old magic, and whatever it is he's trying not to remember - it all makes him feel very real, very human, and also very likeable. Finally it's also a story that has a truely great ending. The climax and conclusion was so exciting and intense I could literally not look away from the screen when I first read it. I had to read it all in one huge gulp and it's been a long time since I did that. (2014-02-16)
QUOTE: The address on the pickup slip leads him down a winding mess of side streets. It turns out to belong to a shop with dusty windows, tucked into the ground level of an old, faded sandstone building. The sign hanging above the door says, in spidery writing, 'Curiosities'.
A bell tinkles when Frank pushes open the door. The shop looks like it's seen better days; half the shelves are empty, and what's left isn't anything to write home about, all scuffed furniture, tarnished brass, and musty books. The light that filters in through the murky front window is dancing with dust motes.
It's definitely not flashy enough to be the kind of place a wizard would run, so that's something. And hey, no giant spiders yet. Frank's cautiously optimistic.
"Hello?" he calls.
A man steps out from a doorway behind the counter. He's tall and much more well-dressed than Frank would have expected, given the state of the shop he apparently runs, but okay. He gives Frank a calculating look. "Are you from the courier service?"
"That's me." Frank flashes his courier's badge, then reaches into his bag. "I've got a receipt for you to sign, and I'll need to you fill out a delivery slip."
"Of course," the man agrees, placidly. He's got an accent - a Northerner, maybe. "I'll go and fetch the package."
The package, when the man reappears from the back room and sets it on the counter, turns out to be a smallish rectangle wrapped in plain brown paper. In the 'contents' section of the delivery slip, the man writes, 'a naturalist's observations re: the healing properties of mermaid song; rare'.
When Frank picks up the package to tuck it away in his bag, he sees that there's a hand-drawn symbol on the underside. It's simple, but something about it draws Frank's eye. He wonders if it's the curiosity shop's logo, or maybe some sort of guild sign.
Frank's not getting paid to ask questions, though, so he just gives a mental shrug and indicates where the man needs to sign on the delivery slip. His signature is an illegible flourish.
"The shop may be a bit difficult to find," the man warns him, once the paperwork and the payment is all squared away. "And when you do find it, you'll need to knock three times on the left side of the front door. There shouldn't be any problems after that."
"Okay," Frank says, looking over the paperwork for the address and already plotting a route in his head. It's a little weird, but it's not the weirdest delivery instruction he's ever had to follow. It's not even the weirdest delivery instruction he's had to follow this month.
"Also," the man adds, snapping his fingers like he's just remembered, "you'd best avoid taking the parcel near the water. Just in case."
That's weirder, but whatever. Frank can deal.
Frank politely bids the man a good day and heads back out to the street. There's a crow sitting on the handlebars of his bike and giving him a shrewd look. "Fuck off, birdbrain," Frank tells it, shooing it with his hands.
The crow flies away. (32,150 words)

mwestbelle: Ever Just the Same (Ever a Surprise)
REC: How the Charm Weaver met the Raven Boy and got entangled in his destiny. A lovely fairy tale with very believable characters and lovely writing. I loved the way both Gerard and Frank was written - how complex and multilayered they both proved to be - and what a rock Ray was. Definitely one of my favourites in this wave of BBB. (2013-09-15)
QUOTE: He is as deep in the woods as he dares go, scanning the speckled forest floor for mushrooms, when he gets a glimpse of pale flesh instead. It's just a flash, fast enough to make him think that he must have imagined it; he can't think of anyone from the village who would be out in the woods this close to dusk. And even if they were, they would be covered, wearing thick cloaks, gloves, scarves, all the charms they could muster. It was too late in the year, too much of a bite in the air to be exposing more skin than necessary.
But he keeps his eyes open, and he sees it again, slipping behind a tree. Gerard comes closer, trying to be steady and nonthreatening as the underbrush cracks below his feet, and so slowly comes around the side of the tree.
And gods, it's a *child*, a pale boy with dark hair wearing nothing but a pair of ripped and ragged trousers that barely reach midcalf, obviously long outgrown. There seem to be some strange dark marks on his torso - bruises? - and he is entirely uncharmed; Gerard can't feel any humming on him. He reaches for the chain around his own neck; in his haste, he fumbles the clasp and tugs the whole thing over his head, pulling the smooth wooden charm out from under his shirt. It's still warm from his skin, and the chain is easily large enough to put it closed over the boy's head. It isn't much, but at least it's something, to keep the boy safe until they make it back to the village.
As the charm hits the boy's chest, he visibly stiffens, and tips his head back against the tree to look up at Gerard. His eyes are black, all the way through.
He's confused, for a moment; the boy steps away from the tree and faces him. Then he changes. Gerard isn't quite able to comprehend it, though it happens before his very eyes. The boy is *growing*, shifting and changing, and what Gerard once took for bruises prove to be black symbols in his skin that spread and shift as he grows, curling over his arms and even up on the side of his throat.
He's not merely growing taller, but older, his frame filling out, his features becoming more defined, until he stands before Gerard, of a height with him and, to all appearances, of an age. Gerard's protection charm hangs around his neck, and the boy, now a man, carefully picks it up, holding it up to inspect it before he flicks his black gaze back to Gerard.
The man reaches out to him, curves his hand around Gerard's cheek. His skin is a little cool, like the chilled bite in your cheeks from being out in the wind for too long. "I won't forget this," he says. And then he turns, giving Gerard a glimpse of inky black wings that seem painted on his back, each individual feather impossibly clear. But only for a moment, for with each step he takes, he fades until he is gone. As though no one was ever there at all.
But Gerard's shirt is still rumpled from when he reached inside, and it's amazing how keenly the absence of even such a small thing can be felt. He rubs his hand against his chest and rearranges his cloak around himself. It isn't his first encounter with something dark and unnatural in the woods, but by far the strangest. And the first that hasn't shied away from him, as heavily charmed as he is. (20,860 words)

kiki_eng: Choose Your Own Adventure
REC: The one where Frank found himself in the Enchanted Forest but worries that he probably wasn't supposed to have done it in a Library. An absolutely charming little story. It's so sweet and warm and happymaking and Frank is just too adorable. (2013-01-06)
QUOTE: Frank thinks he probably has a date. So does Frank; he's going with Gerard, who's probably planning on wearing all the shiny things he owns and drinking lots of fancy juice. They managed to talk him down from making them all wear matching outfits this time.
Frank's gone to a lot fewer formal events since he moved to the Forest. Big events tend to be logistically difficult because the Forest moves around so much, so people mostly don't bother, but when they do Frank's noticed that they tend to go all out and get really excited, which is a lot of fun.
Ray wears his best tunic and ties his hair back and Mikey wears his new boots. The opening is actually pretty chill, for all that everyone's pretty decked out for it. The King makes a short speech and cuts the stripey purple ribbon across the oak doors with Cecilia, the official ceremonial opening scissors, after she's finished giving her own speech. Afterwards everyone heads into the building and mills about looking at it and some of the work that the museum staff has already managed to throw together - there's this whole section on notable people that have stepped on slowstones - it's kind of cool and Frank feels kind of smug about the whole thing, well, except for his own mysterious enchantment, but, still *slowstones*. Slowstones, are, like, the Enchanted Forest equivalent of paying attention to fast-moving carts and being especially polite to dragons. Slowstones are basic, Frank at least got hit by something weird.
He asks the King about it when they're making small-talk over the vegetable platter.
"Hmm..." he says. He studies Frank and plucks at something invisible in the air. "No," he says after a moment. "There's nothing stopping you from leaving the forest; you can go, you just have to take your spouse with you."
"...'Spouse'?" Frank asks. He can feel his eyes widening.
"...'Husband'?" The King returns after a moment, like it's the *word choice* that is throwing off Frank, who is apparently *married to some dude*, what the fuck. Frank has kind of a lot to process here. (2,870 words)

REC: When Gerard suffers a loss, Mikey's there for him as always. A wonderful shapechanger story with some lovely imagery. And there is so much love between Mikey and Gerard, and between all of them, it makes me all warm and happy to read. (2012-07-29)
QUOTE: The grasslands are restless tonight. Mikey can feel it, pitched whispers caught within currents, and fragments of emotions that tickle his skin. All around Other are calling, enemies and friend both, words and cries made tattered by distance as Mikey keeps moving and stares into shadows.
Hemmed in on all sides, this small clearing is a space perfect for hiding. But perfection comes at a cost. Safety is a cage that makes Mikey nervous and itch to take flight.
Close by - an arm's length, a frantic jump at the most - Gerard walks too, but slower, like his feet are already tied to the earth. Without looking at Mikey he says, "You should go."
"No," Mikey says simply, and already he knows what is coming, what tack Gerard's about to try next.
"I could order you to go," Gerard says, taking a step back. Arms crossed against his chest he's unnaturally still, command there in the tilt of his head as he stares Mikey down. "You'd have no choice but to leave."
"You could," Mikey agrees, "But you won't."
Mikey would stake his life on that truth, that as much as Gerard remains leader, right now he's just brother, in blood and kin both.
"If I get seen..."
"I'll protect you," Mikey says, and he will, in feathers and skin, attacking with beak and hands. Until then... Mikey steps close to Gerard, ignoring the feelings of *wrong* that makes unseen feathers ruffle. "Sit, you have to be tired."
Briefly, Gerard resists, stands unmoving and then folds to the ground. It's yet another sign of how fucked up this all is, Gerard bent forward, his hair hiding his face. "I need to keep looking."
Mikey agrees, but not now, when daylight is fading and Other are starting to circle - movements in the darkness and high above, the caw of flocks in mid-flight. "Tomorrow, at sun-up." (1,420 words)

roxy_palace: Everyone Comes to Pan's
REC: The one where Frank gets a job in the kitchen at Pan's and things might not be as ordinary as they seem. This was *amazing*! A gloriously rich and multifaceted story with magnificent storytelling and absolutely wonderful imagery. I loved the way folklore and mythology were used to enrich the bandom guys and make them seem even more themselves somehow. Frank is just fabulous as the pov character and I love his relationship with Bob and how he reacted to everyone he met at Pan's and his fascination with Gerard. And Peppers was was such a star. Another story for the "must re-read soon" list. (2012-03-25)
QUOTE: "Brandon," Ray said, pointing the ladle at him. "I swear on my mother's horns, that guy is worse than the numbskull you hired last week. No more Norms. You understand?
"Ha ha!" said Brandon, his eyes cutting to Frank quickly as he made what Frank assumed he thought was a subtle, cut throat gesture at Ray. "Let me introduce you to our *new guy*." He turned a bright, if slightly forced smile on Frank.
Ray blinked. He looked Frank up and down, and gave Brendon a bemused look. "But -"
"Just in off the street looking for a job!" Brendon cut Ray off. Frank raised his eyebrows at Ray.
"Um... Hi!" Ray said, brightly, his former ire all but forgotten. "I'm Ray, the head chef!"
Frank hitched his bag higher on his shoulder and held out his hand. "Frank, um... the new pot guy." He said and looked to Brendon who nodded.
"Oh, hell no," Ray replied, and Frank felt his stomach plummet. 'Well, that didn't take long.' Frank had known it was too good to be true. Ray shook his head again. "No, you? You, I need on prep."
Frank blinked. "Well, thank you anyway... wait, what?" Frank looked between the two men. Brandon raised an eyebrow and smiled.
Ray nodded and pointed his ladle at Frank. "You have chef's hands," he said. "I'm not wasting them."
Ray's attention was grabbed by something happening over Frank's shoulder suddenly and he narrowed his eyes. "Hey! Bert, what the hell are you... I'm sorry Frankie," he said looking back at Frank. "I gotta," he waved the ladle in Bert's direction. "See you tomorrow at 7am sharp."
Frank sketched a salute, and Ray hared off across the kitchen. He turned back to Brandon to see he'd been joined by three other chefs.
"And this is Keenan," said Brandon, flipping out both hands presentation style towards a tall, broad shouldered guy in chef's whites with what looked like hand-painted flames rolling up the sleeves. "Our Friturier."
The tall chef pointed a meat cleaver at Frank. "You chop it, Eyebrows," he said, with a midwest drawl. "I'll fry that mother till it can't speak." He winked and then chopped something into tiny pieces, threw them in a bowl and tossed them in the air with what seemed to be... sparkly flour? He waggled his eyebrows at Frank. "Seven secret herbs and spices, little brother. Y'get me? Come on."
Two chefs next to him high fived and whooped. "Tell it like it is Keenan!"
"And," said Brandon with a sigh. "These are my brothers, Adam." The smaller of the two, with a bright smile, saluted Frank. "And Zach." Zach tipped his head back and smirked at Frank.
"S'up!" Frank said brightly, shaking the hands they held out for him.
Frank bounced on his toes in a rush of glee. These were *his* kind of people, in *his* kind of kitchen - covered in ink, with what looked like band shirts on under their whites, and one of them, Adam was his name? He was wearing brothel creepers - in a fucking *kitchen*. He giggled and turned to Brandon. "Thank you," he said. This - This is awesome."
"I know right?" Brandon said, smiling back and clapping Frank on the shoulder.
Brandon tugged Frank's sleeve and lead him back towards the café doors. Frank didn't want to go though. There was still so much to see, he was sure.
"I mean, I can actually start now if you want," he said. "I mean. I'm free, right now. Totally free. All yours. If you want. Are you sure you don't want me to like, I don't know, do stuff with potatoes? Because I can, I can do things with potatoes. And like those potatoes are not gonna peel themselves. Right?" Frank babbled and pushed open the double doors... (35,370 words)

tuesdaysgone: One Journey For You (But It's Worth It)
REC: The one where Frank stays with Grant to recupperate and they get kidnapped by faeries. Such a cute story. (2012-03-04)
QUOTE: Grant's tap on the door wakes him. It's already dark outside, and Frank realizes he's slept the day away. "I've made dinner," Grant calls through the door. "It'll keep if you'd rather not get up, though."
Frank gets up. It's just a vegetable barley soup and toasted cheese - "Gourmet I am not, when I'm cooking for myself," Grant tells him - but Frank's starving.
"I had the strangest dream," Frank tells him over tea when they've retired to the sitting room. "I was chasing children down the upstairs hall of your house. They were giggling like crazy, but they were invisible or something, I could only see their footprints. It was one of those super realistic dreams, too. So weird."
Grant doesn't answer right away, just sips at his tea. "How strange," he says finally. "Well, there are no children here, invisible or otherwise."
They sit in silence for a while, until Frank asks idly, "Is that today's paper?"
"Mm? Ah, yes, the Herald." Frank starts to get up and Grant holds up a hand. "People without collapsed lungs do the fetching and carrying around here." He gets up himself and hands it over.
"It's reinflated," Frank tells him with a grimace.
"I did have a warning you'd not cooperate, remember? Sit and relax."
It's a quiet evening, and Frank falls asleep in the chair. Grant wakes him up after an indeterminate amount of time and gently shoos him upstairs. Half-asleep still, Frank's positive he hears more laughter as he rounds the corner of the upstairs hall, but he passes out as soon as he hits the surface of his bed. (8,010 words)

doctor_jasley: Measured in Bleakness
REC: A nice space AU in which Gerard and Brendon gets stranded in a scientific impossibility. The relationship development is very well paced and I loved the oldschool science fiction plot and setting. (2012-02-12) I love the old school science fiction feel to the setting and plot of this story. The bleakness of the place their stranded in and their efforts at escape are so vividly realised. (2013-11-19)
QUOTE: When they finally make it out, Gerard has to blink several times. The landscape in front of them is flat, for miles and miles. In all directions. The only thing breaking up the monotony, is the massive quantities of debris, and warped metal, that peppers the flatness in massive puddles of broken ship parts and random bits of shattered-apart satellites.
It looks like a graveyard for space junk. Brendon breaks away from Gerard to circle the wreckage while Gerard stares.
"Whatever happened, it ripped a chuck out of the ship... or several."
Brendon's voice carries in the emptiness, but it sounds dead, listless, out here in the open. Gerard could have sworn that he had heard inflection in Brendon's voice while they were still trapped inside the ship. He takes one last look at the endless horizon line before shrugging and turning to find Brendon. His arm smarts from the motion. Gerard does his best not to pay attention to the pain.
He's alive. That's better than any other alternative. He can't see Mikey, or his parents, again if he's dead.
"Fuck, Gerard, I need your help. I can't open this shaft door alone. The locking system is dead so we have to break into it manually. I can't do it by myself with broken fingers, fuck."
The air around them is still and devoid of warmth. It's also absent of any chill. Gerard's idly thinking about the science fiction shows he and Mikey watched as teenagers while Brendon walks him through opening the shaft door when the door finally lurches forward, swinging open.
A body falls out, broken and very much dead, and lands at their feet. Brendon drops to his knees and Gerard fights not to throw up his breakfast from earlier. They take a minute to calm down before climbing up into the passageway.
Searching the fragment of the ship, doesn't turn up any survivors. Only more dead people. Apparently, they're the only two left alive, but it's a curious thing.
Most of the ship is nowhere to be found. There's just pieces of it wrecked, twisted up bodies littered amongst the debris, but the majority of the passengers, crew, and ship, just aren't here.
Gerard doesn't know what to make of it.
Eventually, they settle down next to the gutted-out ruins of an old deep-space telescope. Gerard passes out a rationed amount of the food and water they found while looking for survivors. Brendon sits next to him and doesn't touch his rations. (7,890 words)

REC: Frank the newly graduated viola player lands a job with the Royal Philharmonic where he meets Gerard the star violinist. A wonderful classical orchestra AU. I know almost nothing about the classical music world but this story captivated my interest anyway. All the characterisations are great, particularly Frank's. The way his love of music and playing shone through everything that happened felt so right and so *him*. (2011-07-17)
QUOTE: It's almost a relief to hear just one voice, his sweet Pansy's, and not a chorus of twelve. [...] He keeps the whole orchestra in his head as he plays: here he decrescendos to let the second violins take over the melody for two bars, and then the first violins triumph, and they all get louder and louder until the horns cut through, rising above everything, the beautiful complex harmonies that almost sound like chaos. REC: Frankie hates how this ends, blood covering the floor, Gerard sobbing in the background. This is wonderful. The universe is fascinating and I love this Frank, he's got such a distinct personality, and I want to know everything about this steampunk-esque version of Gerard. QUOTE: Frankie looks back over his shoulder at this particular Gerard, his sobbing grating on Frank's raw nerves like a file. Yeah, there was blood everywhere, but at least this Frank was still alive. He couldn't say that about his own personal Gee, or M's Frank, for that matter. pandarus: (To Die Will Be) An Awfully Big Adventure
REC: Gerard gets turned into a vampire, angsts a bit, is attacked by angry vampire slayers, gets chased around LA, and ends up entangled in faerie politics. I had some minor quibbles with some of the philosophical/ethical themes of this story but on the whole it's a very fun and entertaining read and the worldbuilding is excellent. (2011-03-13)
QUOTE: "Back away from the civilian, Gerard, before this gets messy." He spun around, hissing, and stared at the tall, blond figure with baffled rage. It was someone he knew, a familiar face, but Gerard was so far from being himself at this point that he barely knew his *own* name, let alone the name of this interloper watching him from the shadows. jjtaylor: Your Neighbors in Apartment 27 B, Transitional Zone 12 (Midnighter 'verse coda)
REC: Ray learns to be a werewolf. A coda to 'The Detective's Secret...'. This was so lovely and happymaking. It was also very interesting to see Ray's transition from Daylighter to Midnighter. We got a glimpse of it before from Frank's POV but it's so much cooler to get to see it first-hand like this instead of only through memories. (2011-03-06)
QUOTE: "You could have your case heard, if you wanted," Bob says, and Ray can tell this is the real reason Bob’s brought it up this time. "You could see what status the Order might afford you."
"I don't need to exact justice, either," Ray says.
"Fair enough," Bob says, "Just want to give you the opportunity."
"Anyway, I think someone already did it for me."
Bob's eyes flick up to Ray's face. "I read the Clan Code, Bob," Ray says. "I read about vendettas. I know why you needed a lock of my hair." Ray still remembers the sharp shock of their first kiss, of the way Bob just leaned in and the way he'd tasted, heat and determination, before he'd gone out and dismantled the entire rogue faction.
Bob's stock still. The coffee finishes brewing and switches itself off. "I didn't mean to take that opportunity away from you," Bob says.
"No," Ray says. "That's not what I mean. It wasn't because of a contract or about vengeance. It was - it was because I mattered to you."
"You do," Bob says, and then he's stepping into Ray's space, nuzzling Ray's jaw. Ray whimpers, he can't help it, the contact feels so amazing. "I did it because I couldn't stand the thought that someone had hurt you," Bob says, brushing his nose down Ray's neck, across his hair. Ray's whole body is thrumming. "And anyone who had hurt you had to pay." Bob brushes back Ray's hair back from his neck and then presses his lips there, a soft, dry touch against his skin that makes Ray gasp.
"Thank you," Ray says, stupidly, except that he means it, too. He doesn't have words for what Bob's done, for the terrifying wrath of Bob Bryar, or how to reconcile it with the gentle way Bob's lips are moving down Ray's throat.
"You're welcome," Bob says back, and then he brushes his lips over Ray's, too briefly, and steps back, and starts pouring the coffee.
Ray takes in deep, shuddering breathes, trying to pull himself together. Bob isn't looking at him, but the back of Bob's neck is red. Ray wants to ask why Bob stopped, why he keeps stopping, when it's clear what they both want.
"You want something to eat?" Bob asks, opening the refrigerator.
"Eggs," Ray says immediately, and Bob finally looks at him, that same small smile when Ray said the name of today's moon. Ray thinks it's because he's getting better at identifying what foods he wants, and what his body is telling him what it needs.
"Eggs it is," Bob says, and he starts taking eggs and milk and butter out of the fridge.
The food stuff is weird. Ray had thought he'd want meat all the time, but that was a common Daylighter misconception about werewolves. Ray doesn't just want meat - he wants everything. It is overwhelming the information his senses are sending him about food, about his environment, threats and comforts, alerts and needs. (8,040 words)

REC: A sort of Princess Bride AU in wich Gerard disappears under Mysterious Circumstances, Mikey isn't cut out for Adventuring, Ray the Swordsman and Bob the Giant lend assistance, and the Dread Pirate Frank is very helpful. QUOTE: Mikey had been under the impression that Giants were... giant. Then again, he'd never actually *met* a Giant before. "Bob, this is Mikey. He's looking for his brother." One of Ray's big hands came down on Mikey's shoulder. "He disappeared under Mysterious Circumstances," Mikey filled in as he was ushered inside. "Nobody's been kidnapped lately," Bob said evenly. "When did he disappear?" [...] "Are you sure this is an Adventure Story?" jjtaylor: The Detective's Secret and the Mystery of the Dancing Flowers (Midnighter 'verse 2)
REC: The sequel to 'Gerard Way's (Vampire)...' is even better than its precursor. It's fantastic and wonderful and beautiful and completely heartbreaking. I'm completely fascinated by this world. It looks so much like ours on the surface but the more you delve into it the stranger it gets. Like how the magic, which at first seems to mostly be about spells and curses, completely permeates it, connecting everything and everyone. And the combination of mundane politics and high fantasy intrigue is fascinating. The characters are all wonderful, Bob and Brian who maybe aren't as scarily competent all the time as everyone believes, poor Ray and poor James who both completely broke my heart, and of course stupid, stubborn Gerard and scared and heartbroken Frank. I love them all so much. The character who has a secret he refuses to tell is usually a plot device that irritates the crap out of me but it actually works here. Not only did Gerard's secret turn out to be so much bigger and more important than I could ever have imagined, but both his stubborn refusal to tell anyone and the way he finally realised how selfish he was being was also so perfectly in character for him. (2010-12-26)
QOUTE: Frank spends the better part of an hour going over the Mansion layout, the valet duties, and where Dewees can find any of the various things he might need. He probably doesn't do as thorough of a job as he could, because it feels strange to him to start every sentence with, "When I was the valet, I did…" His head's spinning from the breakfast he just had with the Governor, from the mysterious attacker, and from his promise not to tell Gerard even though that's what everything inside of him is screaming to do.
Frank's mid-sentence explaining why there are three places they keep towels in the house when he's suddenly unable to speak. It takes him a moment to realize it's because he's coughing.
"You ok?" Dewees asks, reaching around to pat Frank on the back. Frank tries to answer, but he just coughs more.
"Haven't heard you cough in ages," Dewees says, when Frank finally wheezes to a halt. "Thought vampires didn't need to breathe."
"Not," Frank says, clearing his throat. "Not in the same way."
"Did you choke on something?" Dewees asks. Frank shakes his head. He's not sure what happened at all, except that his chest aches. "Maybe you're throat is raw because you've been talking at me for an hour straight."
"Whatever man, listen, the towels are important."
"I'm listening," Dewees says.
Gerard's fallen asleep in his reading chair when Frank goes to find him. He startles awake when Frank touches his shoulder, but then smiles sleepily at Frank.
"How was Jamia? Have you been back long?" Gerard asks.
"Dewees was still here, so I got him started," Frank says, choosing to ignore the first question. "Come on, we should go to bed."
They're upstairs when Gerard asks, "Is everything ok, Frank? You keep clearing your throat."
He hasn't realized he is still doing it. "I just - it was weird, I had a coughing fit earlier. With Dewees."
Gerard accidentally slams the dresser drawer shut. "Coughing."
"Yeah, it was out of the blue," Frank says. "Haven't coughed in years."
"Maybe you should talk to Brian tomorrow," Gerard says. "It might have to do with your injury." Gerard's not looking at him, instead folding and unfolding a pair of socks.
"Shouldn't I be completely healed, though?" Frank asks. "Isn't the Trading supposed to -"
"Frank," Gerard says sharply, and Frank falls silent. Gerard finally looks at him and they have an uncomfortably tense moment of staring at each other.
"I'll talk to Schechter," Frank says.
"Ok," Gerard says, "Oh, I found the fern."
"Oh," Frank says. He doesn't want to talk about the fern. He wants to talk about why Gerard just snapped at him, and why he can't even say the word 'Trading' without Gerard getting furious. "Where was it?"
"Where you said," Gerard says, his voice softer. "In the third volume of field guides."
"I told you," Frank says. (84,890 words)
