Son of the Desert
Summary: Every time Edward sees the circle on the back Mustang's hand, he wants to scream, wants to reach across the desk and shake him, wants to wrap his hands around the older man's throat and ask if it was worth it, if this desk and his rank is worth the screaming, crying, writhing, burning bodies of his people -

"Something to say, Fullmetal?" Mustang drawls.

Edward snaps the file shut, "Nope."

|| Edward has two names, but one is a secret. One is a gift from his parents, and it's what they call him and what Winry calls him and what everyone calls him. The second is a gift from Ishvala, and he must use is sparingly, it is the name stamped on his soul, and he must be careful with who he gives his soul to.

Alphonse has a secret name too, but he doesn't know it, which he doesn't think is fair.

"It is a gift," his mother says, holding him in her arms when he's exhausted himself from crying, "He must choose to share it. It is not my name to give."

Edward creeps over to his brother's crib that night, peers down at the baby that looks just like him, just like Dad, and whispers, "I'll give you mine. You don't have to give me yours if you don't want, but I want you to have mine."

He repeats his secret name to his baby brother until his throat is hoarse, until he's leaning half over the crib and his eyelids droop in exhaustion.

Blessings and Rituals
Summary: In which Dwarves have a religion - and Hobbits don’t.

|| It made sense to Bilbo that all Dwarven rituals – if that was really what they were and not just habits – included stone. They were stone workers after all. But he couldn't figure out why. Why so many and what was the purpose of it. And he wasn't quite sure how to ask. So he watched and occasionally jotted the little rituals down in his journal for further contemplation later.

It was the watching that eventually got him his explanation. Óin glanced up at him from piling the stones in his nightly upside-down tower and harrumphed. "It's for protection," he said, piling the stones one by one, smallest on the bottom, then the next smallest, and the next, until the biggest one came on top. "I'm asking for Mahal's protection for the camp and for the night. If the tower holds, the camp is protected – if it tips over, it isn't safe."

"Ah," Bilbo said, frowning. He hadn't even considered that it might have to do with gods and such, but it made sense. "That's why Thorin had us switch camps a few days back."

|| Listen, but that would be an AMAZING way to kick Thorin out of goldsickness.

In the World to Come
Summary: Barnes was never a Jewish name before.

[[ "No. I don’t—no. You're serious?" Morita pulled a face. "You don't seem like it."

Bucky wagged his eyebrows. "Oh yeah. It was Barnewitz back in the old country."

"That sounds like bullshit to me."

"You'd be amazed how often it works," he said cheerfully, and readjusted his hold on his gun. The sun didn't make it far into the dense forest on either side of them. Poland, it turned out, really was quite a picture.

Morita was still frowning as he marched. "But I've seen you eat pork. Or whatever that shit the Army feeds us is."

He shrugged. "Gotta eat." Then: "Wait, what the hell would make me 'seem like it'?"

"You got me. What's the test? Do I drop a penny?"

Compassion (What They'll Write)
“Haven’t we already talked about this? Being compassionate to the good guys isn’t being compassionate at all. Not when you’re pretty much the Head Good Guy.”

“Head Good Guy?” said Crowley. “I like that.”

“I’m being serious, Crowley.” Jesus glared out over the water. Thunder boomed.

“You can’t have everything,” said Crowley. “Even if you’re God.”

“I don’t want everything. I just want everyone to be happy.”

“That’s pretty big,” Crowley reconsidered. “It might be easier to just get everything.”

Jesus sighed. A gale issued from his lips and blew out to sea, joining the storm in its beginning stages and coalescing into a tempest.

“They’ll write that you were a great person, you know,” Crowley said. “He might’ve just wanted you to learn your lesson, but they’ll remember how nice you were, even to your enemies, and everyone will respect you, and they’ll try to copy you, and just by having existed, you’ll make everyone want to be like you.”

Her parents are severely alarmed at her first incident of accidental magic, when she’s a baby and summons the apple slice right out of her distracted mother’s hand. They read Quran over her and throughout the house to ward against djinn, but the accidental magic continues, so the write ayat-ul qursi and put it in a locket for her to wear to protect her from the evil eye and sihr.

Nothing stops, and since she doesn’t act possessed, they decide its just a miracle from God, makes sure she reads Quran and does her prayers, and make dua, and she grows up well-adjusted and slightly worried about this ability of her. Her parents make sure she doesn’t get a big head and think she’s a saint or something.

Then she turns 11, and McGonagall comes to tell them about Hogwarts. The parents are sceptical and demand some kind of proof that this woman isn’t about to spirit their daughter away. McGonagall is taken aback that the issue for these Muggles isn’t the magic so much as the ‘invisible boarding school we can’t tell is safe or not’.

Summary: In which the fight against You-Know-Who continues. And there is mysticism. And eventually shagging.

|| "You need a plan."

The three of them were lounging on the grass in the sun, exams finished and the Leaving Feast less than a week away.

"No one's going to buy that you're just going to sit around on your arse." Hermione was right as usual, but what was he supposed to do about it?

"Especially not with the Quidditch offers." Ron, around a mouthful of pumpkin juice.

Not after they'd been splashed all over the Daily Prophet, no. Harry sighed. "I know, but what am I supposed to say? Dumbledore said lie low and don't let on."

"Why not develop a drinking problem?"

Hermione elbowed Ron in the ribs. "Honestly, I don't’—"

"No, no, you've got to. Not really," Ron clarified. Now that he'd settled on an idea he was sitting up straight, animated. "Fake it. People would believe that. Plenty of people with your kind of money would love to sit around and drink themselves silly for a year."

It was a stroke of genius, Weasley-style.

Summary: Lucy knows Aslan by many names.

|| Jesus was also a prophet in the Muslim religion. They call him Isa, and he is one of the five rasuls, the carriers of sharia. Isa was wholly human and no son of god, for there is only one god in Islam, and he cannot be divided into littler gods. You won’t find Allah in the three parts of Christian hypostases or the sanctities of saints. The faithful pray only to him and only in one direction, and this is a singularity that comforts you. A Muslim knows where to point his love and to whom he should entrust his weaknesses.

When you told your siblings this, Peter and Susan had exchanged looks and perhaps some consternation. Edmund was the only one waiting to hear more. He truly deserves his title, you think. The Just, who listens to all testimonies.

“Their religion comes from the desert,” you continued. “If there’s no water to wash themselves before prayers, the faithful wash themselves with sand.”

Edmund understands.

build me a city, call it jerusalem
Warning: This story contains, as a necessity to the plot device, a number of retellings/reinterpretations of Judeo-Christian stories and themes. If that sort of thing is likely to upset you one way or the other, you should probably consider giving this tale a pass. ♥

Summary: Man begets man begets The Tales of Men, and there's nothing godly in that, because Those Above and Them Below haven't any real need for the stories humans have been hungry for since the snake and the Angel with the flaming sword.

On The Merits of Checking The Calendar
Summary : In which Arthur is forgetful and Eames still isn't the Old Spice man.

|| The first clue should really be the fact that Eames wakes Arthur up.

Of the two of them, Arthur is more likely to be described at the morning person; he's capable of cognizant thought before a shower, which is more than can generally be said of Eames. In fact, the most that can generally be said of Eames in the mornings is that he's breathing, and sometimes Arthur has to check that, just to be sure. But this particular morning, he's awake and alert, his wet hair dripping into Arthur's face, and he's grinning like an asshole.

Potter-fic, finally finished, with great difficulty. Originally written for the [info]omniocular “Totally not Bad-fic” challenge; the relevant cliché was ‘Evangelical who objects to magic goes to Hogwarts.’ Warnings: It’s absurdly long (11451 words), and episodic. Contains religion, for obvious reasons. Mostly OCs, though Hermione, Ginny and McGonagall feature. I probably ought to warn for the fact that it contains an Evangelical being pig-headed, and an Anglo-Catholic being a git. It also contains Catholic! Weasleys, largely for pragmatic plot related reasons (though there must be some reason Percy’s middle name is Ignatius), and while it sends up various versions of Christianity, it is written from a Christian standpoint.
